Bucs Have To Slap Around Matt Cassel

August 21st, 2010

Joe is longing to see the Bucs get to Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel tonight in the blacked out preseason home opener.

With all the other Bucs stuff to keep an eye on, plus Chiefs safety Eric Berry, Joe wants to see a real pass rush against a quarterback who takes an incredible amount of sacks and likely will be throwing the ball a lot tonight.

The Bucs haven’t gotten to the quarterback successfully in years, and Joe wants to see a real stride taken. Stop the run reasonably well like in Miami, great, but it’s time to get after the QB.

Finally, Gerald McCoy and Brian Price will be together rushing inside on third down. Disrupt, young men. Put some heat on film and get the Browns all stressed out.

Regarding Cassel, who had a decent season last year in Kansas City, Joe remembers that The Tampa Tribune reported the Bucs were making a play to get him before the 2009 draft, but the Chiefs snatched him for a 2009 second round pick.

Cassel had a half-way decent year on the crappy Chiefs. And while Joe is in no way wishing the Bucs had Cassel, it is intriguing to think about what the Bucs would look like if they had plucked Cassel for a second round pick and taken wide receiver Jeremy Maclin rather than Josh Freeman.

i agree in all u say less the last part, first, that second pick was unavailable at that time because we got Kellen Winslow, second, im really comfortable with Josh Freeman, i guess he is better choice over Maclin, just my opinion!

Front 7 v. Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones.

    Joe here,

Aldo – It’s all speculation, of course. But the Winslow trade and the Cassel trade were done hours apart, so it’s hard to say what was available when and what the Bucs turned down.

    i agree with you aldo

i would rather have freeman than cassel, and id rather have mike williams then maclin i thnk and we got better value out of our draft picks i think

kellen and freeman, a 1st and a second is better than cassel and maclin, a first and a second, but thats just my iopinion

i do wish we would have taken ray rice though a few years back, wed be awesome on offense

Hey Joe, call me crazy, but I thought the first team third down rush package has McCoy and Kyle Moore at DT, not Price … ?

  6. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Hatey80 – No, that was without Price available. You’ll see Moore, Price, McCoy and White tonight in that situation.

  7. Hatey 80 Says:

Hey Joe – are you 100% sure about that? The Bucs have talked a lot about rushing Moore from the DT spot, and Steve White has commented several times (on this very site!) since mid-2009 that he can’t understand why the Bucs want to take first Miller and now apparently Price off the field on third down and rush Moore from the unfamiliar DT spot.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope we do see price on 3rd and long, I think he could be even better than McCoy. But I fear the Bucs aren’t on the same page as you or I. 🙁

Joe needs to temper his enthusiasm a bit about a group of rooks and seconds years players getting to the quarterback. Half these guys still are unsure of there gap assignments my brother. That’s a little like asking a high school pitcher to close out the seventh game of the world series isn’t it?

    @Joe

If there is a season in 2011, what free agents at DE will be available for the Bucs?? If there is a true difference maker we can get at a reasonable age still, I’d rather do that then just do this whole stinking thing through the draft.

Have faith Formerbuc, they may just surprise you.

Freeman is going to light em up tonight! K2 is back, the Cadi is waxed up and rollin, Talib has his razor, and Sabby is locked in the equipment closet with Clayton.
