Lovie Jabs Used Car Salesmen

February 20th, 2015

lovie smith 0112The 15-minute official interview the Bucs will give some draft prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine this week can be somewhat silly.

It’s valuable, but 15 minutes is brief for a guy professionally coached how to respond.

What matters most is when a prospect spends a full day at One Buc Palace talking at length with many people, working out, breaking down film, interacting, etc.

Lovie Smith shared great skepticism for combine interviews with beat writer Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune. He even likened them to working with stereotypical con men.

“What are you going to get in 15 minutes?’’ Smith said. “I know first impressions are important, but all a guy has to do is come in and trick you for 15 minutes.

“I can do that. Used car salesmen make a living doing that. That’s why, with these 15-minute interviews, we won’t even count that, because we’re going to spend a lot more time with (Winston) than that. A lot more.’’

Ouch! Joe realizes Lovie likely buys new vehicles or leases. But Coach, c’mon, there are plenty of honest used car peddlers.

Regardless, don’t expect Tampa Bay to put a load of stock in their limited time with potential early round picks. Those combine interviews, though, are huge for players who aren’t granted visits to One Buc Palace, which are limited by league rules.

Don’t worry. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota will find their way soon to One Buc Palace.

  2. Harry Says:

    Lovie, did it only take Belicheat 15 minutes to sell you Mankins for a ridiculous 4th round pick AND Tim Wright? Worst F-ing trade ever!

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Joe,

    I assume you put (Winston) in brackets within the Lovie quotes because he likely said (him) when responding to a question about a Winston interview.

    Also, the used car salesman stereotype is well deserved….

  4. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    @Harry…..LOL….

  5. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    Anyone think Jlynch is one of those salesmen and is taking it was too persinally before he has to go out and sling a couple beaters

  6. Tom Edrington Says:

    Heck, Lovie put on his Great American Scam hat when the Glazers interviewed him and somehow convinced them they he would go 8-8 last year…..

    Talk about a con man…….guys in glass houses need to put away the rocks.

  7. Eric Says:

    But he did use this technique to draft an outstanding player in round one last year.

    And other promising players.

    And 15 minutes with Marcus Mariota would be like an overdose of Ambien anyway.

  8. MTM Says:

    That’s Lovie speak for “I know Winston can make it through a 15 minute interview without being tripped up”.

  9. OB Says:

    Well Lovie was abused by a used player salesman last year, almost all were lemons.

  10. Luther Says:

    Personal experience tells me that there is no such thing as a honest used car salesman.

  11. "The kevin" Says:

    I wish tom would go be a fan of another team.

    What a miserable life you must have.

    Just hate on anything and everything you can.

    Just gonna hate just to be a hater.

    Go find a hobby or something you loser.

  12. Robert 9 Says:

    they don’t count.. lol

    lovie is a moran. that being said even a blind squirrel can find a nut. given enough time, and depending on how good a liar lovie is, he might just well get the team to break 500.

    but to have that killer instinct Gruden had and infested the team with…..aint happnin.

  13. Tom Edrington Says:

    When “The Kevin” grows up, he wants to be an assistant to a used car salesman.

  14. Robert 9 Says:

    it’s humorous to me how he bashes salesmen. What does he think he is, or a politician.

    only difference is their lies have far greater consequences than a 5k car.

  15. meh Says:

    Jlynch, McDonald had a fine year. I don’t know why you’re upset about the DT Lovie picked. Him and Verner were the only positives to that FA class.

    @harry
    I’m still not over that f’n trade

  17. Luther Says:

    @Robert 9

    “only difference is their lies have far greater consequences than a 5k car”

    It’s all relative. A 30 million dollar bust won’t hurt the glazers all that much. Some poor guy getting taken for 5 grand that he saved up to get a car for needed transprotation can be devistating and may cause that person to be out on the street.

  18. iamkingsu Says:

    @joe
    I wish we were still in play for a tight end because I think Clive Walford is about to rock these this workouts in a few mins and from the few games I’ve watched the tape matches up.

  19. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Agreed that you are not going to learn much about a guy in 15 minutes, but that’s not to say it’s not useful. Their body language, demeanor and how they seem to handle the stress of the Combine can tell you some things about a guy too. The team visits are much more important, but the Combine interviews are just another tool a coach uses to help him make the right decision.

  20. Robert 9 Says:

    @ luther

    I was thinking more in terms of the players and coaches lovie sells to come here….and then does the exact opposite of what he has told the entire free world.

    those guys being out of job or having their careers in shambles and how that effects their families is what I meant.

    your right the Glazers won’t lose any sleep.

  21. JTHV Says:

    I sell used cars and I’ve averaged over 150 used car sales a year since 2010 and I promise, it’s not because I wear a poka-dotted tie, wool jacket and treat people poorly.

    At least 60% of my business is return customers.

    We’re not all the guy who taught you otherwise and in 2015, that guy’s car business is dead.

  22. WS99 Says:

    “but all a guy has to do is come in and trick you for 15 minutes.” Or 15 games which ever is greater.

  23. "The kevin" Says:

    When “tom” gets done cleaning his room and having his chicken nugget lunch he will be back hating on everything.

    Loser

  24. Jack Says:

    Yep, these two QBs and others will get more attention in Tampa than they probably ever wanted 🙂

  25. lion Says:

    An honest used cars salesman? Now that is what you call an oxymoron.
