Jameis Watch: Assigning A Babysitter

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Hiring a 21-year-old, madly-talented, winner of a quarterback with a history of questionable decision-making to be the face of your NFL franchise isn’t necessarily a bad idea, especially when your team is desperate for a pulse on offense and winning leadership.
In the case of Jameis Winston, his most ardent supporters agree that it would be wise for Winston’s next NFL team to give him some extra help — a mentor above and beyond his position coach and the veteran quarterback alongside him on the roster.
Joe’s going to call that what it is: a babysitter.
The countless hours any rookie QB would spend at One Buc Palace, for example, with his quarterbacks coach and a veteran QB, should be enough to keep him on the right track. But the investment in a guy like Winston would be huge, and there’s no reason for the Bucs to not have another sight of eyes watching and advising Winston.
Some have speculated Derrick Brooks is perfect for this role. And Brooks hasn’t scoffed at the suggestion when it’s come up on Tampa-2, his WDAE-AM 620 radio show.
Former Bucs quarterback Shaun King, one of three QBs to lead Tampa Bay to the NFC Championship game, suggested the Bucs would draft Winston expecting problems but nothing that couldn’t be managed.
King is bullish on the Bucs being an excellent fit for Winston on the and off the field.
“We may have an issue or two over the first six or seven years off the field that we have to deal with,” King said on WDAE-AM 620 last week. “Nothing that can put him in jail, but at the same time, who knows? Something may happen. So I’m drafting him with that understanding.
“Tampa is a good place for Jameis. There’s a great support system of former Buccaneers that live here. I think that Lovie can assign one of his sons, maybe, to Jameis to help him, you know, be a mentor,” King said. “So I think support system is in place. The [receiver] talent is here. And I love Dirk Koetter.”
Joe was intrigued by King suggesting Lovie could assign one of his sons to babysit/mentor Winston. Miles Smith, 25, is a Buccaneers coaching intern, and Mikal Smith, 38, is the safeties coach. Who would know Lovie’s expectations better than either of those two?
Regardless, if the Bucs do the wise thing and draft Winston, and put the right cast of teammates around him, Joe hopes Winston wouldn’t need any extra mentoring/babysitting.

Am I the only one who thinks that if the number1 overall pick in the draft needs a babysitter, he shouldn’t be the number 1 overall pick. This guy is a very talented knucklehead who may be suspended for more games than he plays.

I don’t care how talented you are, if I have to babysit your every move I don’t want you. I don’t care if you’re a QB or a dishwasher, I shouldn’t have to babysit a supposed adult. I spent 17 years in the USAF, I saw many many many 18 to 21 year old morons and knuckleheads come and go, many grew up when tasked and many did not but no one baby sat them, you either have the mental capacity to know right from wrong or you do not and from what I’ve witnessed Winston does not.

Calling it a babysitter is kind of absurd i agree but i don’t get the commentators saying not to draft him because of this.. Hell i am 26 and i have a mentor. I’ve never been to jail or anything like that but it is good to receive advice from older people who have been there done that and are now successful at life. Sorry to all those who are against it but….Jameis is coming to Tampa

Come on Joe, give me a break. Name one other multibillion dollar company in America that would hire an employee to represent their company to the public who would be willing to pay that person millions of dollars and would hire someone who needs a babysitter to keep him out of trouble. The idea is beyond absurd. I’m all for giving people second chances but he has already showed that after getting in trouble and knowing the spotlight is on him he keeps doing stupid things. I would like to think that the Bucs would have learned a thing or two by signing Mike Williams. After doing all the research and “due diligence” he only stayed out of trouble for a short time and then reverted back to his true personality which got him canned and now if memory serves me right he’s out of football. Same with Jeremy Stevens. A leopard doesn’t change its spots and if I can’t trust our QB to be smart enough to stay out of trouble off the field then I don’t want him.

Buc fans will be constantly worried about Winston’s off field behavior…..it’s a long off season…..think about all the money, cars….and perhaps the crowd he will be hanging with…..and, the last time I checked…Winston is an adult….even if he doesn’t act like one…….he would have to agree to a babysitter…fat chance of that.
Like I’ve said…..I can accept Winston as our QB….but I would sleep much better if it were Mariota….and I think we just found out…I’m not the only one…

This seems a little silly, but if you are going to invest millions of dollars and a first round pick I understand the premise.
The truth is Winston lived in the film room at FSU and he will do the same at Tampa Bay. He’s a student of the game, a perfectionist and a fierce competitor….almost to a fault.
He rarely went out in Tallahassee except for that fated night that resulted in his character being questioned. And if you look at the evidence you realized it is all based on a false premise.
I mean if you want to say he needs a baby sitter because he took soda in a catsup cup or he was shooting BBQ guns in the woods close to campus (but not on campus) then yeah I guess so, but how many 18 year olds haven’t fine similarilly silly stuff?
The biggest case for needing to provide him a babysitter is the chanting of the meme in the student union. As a 40 year old, I don’t understand the meme but I do know it’s popular amongst college kids. So that, in and of itself, is not a big deal. The questionable part is that he didn’t seem to understand that, as a Heisman winner, he can’t draw that kind if attention to himself. But again, that’s part of learning to adjust to your fame.

Why haven’t we explored a guy like Sean Mannion, or Brett Hundley? Both guys are light years above what we have now, and are probably 3rd rounders at the moment, which would allow us to not only trade back and stockpile picks and improve several positions, but still get a potential franchise QB? Neither 1st rounder is a sure thing either, so why not?

I think Joe got a little carried away, referring to “babysitting” our franchise QB.
What actually needs to be done is provide counseling. It starts with the great job the NFL does in educating the young, soon-to-be millionaires, about life as an adult, rip-offs, family and friends looking to get a free ride and the perils of nightlife and after hours partying.
Second. Don’t think a couple of hours provided by the league is enough education. The Bucs need to keep that going with a “Mentor”, not a babysitter.
We may be just mincing words here, but a mentor is someone who guides and advises, while a babysitter is a parental overseer, who dictates.

Sorry Tom that simply doesn’t pass the smell test. First off the “fated night”. If we concede that he didn’t rape the girl there’s still the problem of judgment of doing her with two buddies videoing it. Not exactly classy. Something doesn’t have to be illegal to be stupid and in bad taste. If he had been in the NFL and the “face of the franchise” the odds increase exponentially that the video would have wound up on TMZ and gone viral on the internet. Way to rep our fair city eh?
Secondly the NUMBER of screw ups is disturbing. The fact that he was such a cement head he yelled the most vulgar curses while he was being investigated for rape shows a lack of judgement beyond the pale and perhaps a belief that he’s “FAMOUS” Jameis and can get away with anything. And the co dependents throughout his young athletic career share a lot of blame for that.
Third. @JOE I’m not singling out FSU but simply pointing out that EVERY major program in the country would have handled this just like the NFL!!! Do we not believe FSU was smart enough to have a “baby sitter” in Tallahassee for him?
People have been counseling Jameis since he was in high school and it was clear that he had MILLION dollar athletic talent. He’s received tons of babysitting already and how has it worked? Simply follow the $$$$$. There are dozens of people ready to cash in, some probably already have cashed in, on Jameis talent. Even if nobody “counseled” him for altruistic reasons (we know at least DB55 tried for the “right’ reasons” there were PLENTY of folks concerned enough about the $$$$ to “babysit” him.
What King and others propose has already been done for at least two years.
We skeptics would feel a lot better if somebody could explain to us why it will work THIS time but not the past two years.

I agree that if after analyzing all things Winston, the Bucs feel like he needs a baby sitter then we have to pass on him. What team leader and face of the franchise needs a baby sitter currently on any NFL roster? Freeman displayed some ability and was actually for one season playing pretty damned good and well the rest is history. I know that FSU homers are going to demand we draft Winston regardless, but which comes first here, the Bucs or FSU??? Also, now that the gold digging, opportunistic women out there and we all know they exist, will be just waiting to pounce on setting him up and accusing him of rape once he gets paid. Anyone who thinks they won’t is just foolish. It is not like they can keep the kid locked up in the trainers room 365 days a year. I think Winston does have talent but buyer beware!!! A babysitter is not going to do any good. Winston needs to learn, if he has not, there are penalties for bad behavior. This is the only way a 21 year old multimillionaire is going to learn or even think of what he is doing. Make his contract with penalties clauses and have him buy a very large insurance policy that goes to the Bucs, if he goes to jail. They can get creative.
Now this assumes that Winston is the choice, if he is not, he is someone else’s problem. Whoever is picked should sit on the bench a while with Glennon as the starter. It will be good for the team and the both of them.

What’s the problem? After Mike Glennon gets run out of town, Wintson can just use Glennon’s babysitter……. oh wait Glennon didn’t need a babysitter.
I remember LaGarrett Blout needed special assistance to make it to team functions on time. But he wasn’t even drafted because his special needs risk. He turned out to be a Super Bowl caliber player.
Does Marcus Mariota need a babysitter? Probably not, but he too is a special needs kinda guy with his alleged inability to learn a pro style offense.
So you have a football team that has lost 70 out of a 100 games and never had a franchise quarterback. Hmmmmmm.
We can quickly see there is no sure thing quarterback in this years draft.
So the only thing to do is to pick another hero at a different position or trade down and get another first round pick to cover the mistake you’re about to make in picking either of these high risk gambles.
Whatever real men don’t need babysitters and desperate football franchises don”t pick special needs players with the FIRST OVERALL PICK.

I dont think Tampa is the right fit socially, for Winston. Too much trouble to get into and to distract a young millionaire. But who is to say that a guy like Mariota wont be lured down the wrong path? I think Mariota will be a great QB some day but only if the team hes on is willing to build an offensive scheme/system around his skill set. Now, what exactly makes you guys think the Bucs are even capable of that?
If I was going to run a very vanilla passing offense that relies heavily on a ground n pound running game, (like its always been in Tampa), then im drafting Winston.

I love Jameis and I want him to be the #1 pick…I get the idea about having an extra set of eyes on him…but as much as I’ve studied him I’ve noticed that Jameis thrives on attention, so giving him extra attention off the field, to “make sure he doesn’t screw up” might actually be worse then just trusting him to be a man.

I don’t hate Winston, I just have more confidence that you can teach a football player new football concepts rather than teach a football player new life concepts.
BTW. All this “I bet most people here did worse when they were 18-20 years old” is BS. Most people have something called common sense and don’t do stupid $hit when they know a bunch of people are watching them. I did some dumb stuff in my teens, but if I knew someone would be video taping it or if I was on the brink of being a celebrity, I would have adjusted accordingly. Rayjay…I think it’s a great point that Sick made. He’s not comparing a 1st round draft pick to Incognito. He’s comparing the troublemaker label that both of them have.
I guess you read it wrong or interpreted in some way that made you laugh, but it’s true.
This site was filled with some of the same people complaining about Winston, yet wanted Incognito. That’s indisputable.

My problem with the Winston situation is the investment that would be required to take the risk. I do not care about his past behavior. I care about his current and future behavior and the fact that even if he does not go out looking for trouble, trouble is going to look for him since his past will make him a vulnerable target once he is a millionaire. That is just basic common sense and projecting human nature playing out.

87 there are big differences in terms of risk when you look at Incognito vs Winston, that is why Sick’s statement is funny.
Incognito has proven to be at least a serviceable player, wouldn’t have cost the team much money, would have filled an immediate need and, most importantly, he isn’t a quarterback/face of the franchise that would have cost us the #1 pick. You sign Incognito and cut him if he doesn’t work out; you pick Winston and you’re stuck with him for 5 years if he doesn’t work out.

Again very well said!! That was what I am trying to point out. That is what makes it not hypocrisy to be concerned about Winston if you wanted Incognito. It was a completely different situation. And it should be a little telling that the Bucs after visiting Incognito, decided to take a flyer on him. Taking Winston does not fit the current staffs method of operations.

Bottom line we need a QB. If we dont draft one this year we may not be in the position to do so for years. The question is who is the best QB in this draft? The majority of the experts think Winston is the more pro ready QB. So as far as im concerned a 26 year season ticket holder , get a babysitter, bring his parents in to live with him, let him live with Derick Brooks , i dont care draft him and dont look back. Because we just may get lucky and get the first franchise QB we have ever had. Its worth the risk!!!!!!

Wow just wow. Some of you guys apparently do not realize that the examples you bring up actually argue AGAINST your case.
1.)Legarrette Blount. A Super Bowl talent therefore we should ignore character issues. Blount dropped like a rock in the draft for sucker punching a guy. He’s such a major head case he can’t even stay on a roster!!!!!!!!
Imagine this. On January 11, 2014, Blount rushed for four touchdowns setting the Patriots record for most rushing touchdowns in a playoff game and is second on the all time list for rushing touchdowns in a playoff game.
And yet Belicheat CUT HIM after the season. That kind of performance and he gets cut? Pittsburgh signs him and he’s such a head case they too cut him!!!
The Patriots desperate for an RB resign him for this season.
All that talent and yet he can’t stay on the field. Blount is easily as good an RB as Jameis is a QB. What makes us think Jameis won’t go the same route?
St. Louis. Stop bringing them up!!! They destroy the MUST take a QB argument. They used the #1 pick in the draft for a QB. How did that work out? Later they traded a high 1st round to the foreskins. The foreskins select RGIII..how did that work out? The Rams used that stockpile of picks to create a true up and coming young team!

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. The amount of growth, development, and learning that takes place between the ages of 21 and 27 (career, marriage, children) are arguably the most important and life changing.

Great post! Spot on. And I agree that Glennon should start this year no matter who we draft unless the Heisman beats him out in a TRULY open and fair competion. No more anointing of any more QB’s whether it’s Glennon or a #1 draft pick. Let them EARN their way onto the field.

I personally am not concerned about how his contract would be structured. The Glazers are not strapped for cash. The waste of the draft pick is far more costly than the cash, if it came down to it. If we take Winston, I will be one of his biggest supporters. He is twice the risk though due to character concerns. Both QBs could be busts but at least one of the prospects has a clean background.

And the real downer is that you are incorrect about the age that determines our behavior. Psychologists will tell you that most of our character, personality, morality etc are formed in our first five years!

It comes down to this for me anyways. The KID, yes I said KID was 19-20 years old doing all this off the field crap. I don’t care if he should have never done it because he had a spotlight on him and should have acted accordingly. He’s STILL a 20 year old kid in college, a college kid just like everyone else at FSU.
That’s my bottom line when it comes to his off the field stuff. I think whoever drafts him won’t see much problems down the road once he’s out of FS

You raise valid points, and this is not the first time I’ve offered what I would consider to be valid responses.
The video taping of the “rape incident” is an interesting one if you step back and think about it. Who does that? Who videotapes a crime? What criminal allows the criminal act to be video taped in the first place? Think about it, we’re not talking about just a rape, but a rape that was recorded by “two” other teammates? Does that really make sense to you?
Here’s the kicker…the girls getting raped, right? Her testimony says she asked them to stop recording it….. here’s a girl getting raped and she’s worried about a video being recorded? Her own documented testimony states this. Use your brain people. This is one of many mind-numbing facts of the case.

Second, Riley Cooper drops the N-word at a concert and gets busted on twitter. Yes, there is a “very good” argument for Jameis watching his words with respect to his situation. Is a white guy dropping the N word any less ignorant? I don’t think so. This is a social technology issue, not just something a stupid college kid did. Winston has made his mistakes, just like all of you have, only you weren’t under a microscrope with everything you did and said recorded for future reference.
Cam Newton had just as shaky a character in college… he’s fine.
Manning was the prime componenent in a successful lawsuit ($300K) against the University of Tennessee centering in on the FACT that he knowingly and purposely put his naked butt and testicles on a female trainer’s head.

The guy went 25-27 in his very first game running the FSU offense, which is more complicated than many NFL systems. You think he gets in Jimbo’s face because he doesn’t know what’s going on? I have zero concerns about his work ethic/preparation.

Way to take it out of context there buddy. What I’m saying is, from a coaching/team perspective, I’d rather take a chance that I can teach a kid to take a snap under center over teaching a kid the difference between dumb and smart. (These are concepts that should be developed much earlier than 20 btw, my 7 year old daughter could have told Jameis standing on a table and shouting obscenities was a bad idea.). Both of these things are teachable, but I think a pro football coach is better equipped to teach someone how to play football…call me crazy.
Perhaps I was too advanced in my college days, I vividly remember knowing the difference between right and wrong. Knowing there were consequences for my actions, knowing I should respect women. F-it, the kid can throw!

I’ve laid off on the critisism of Winston. I still don’t think the Bucs will draft him number one overall. Winston seems the type to ignore authority, I can’t be too critical because I was far from a saint myself throughout my twenties. Winston does his own thing no matter who is in his ear. Big warning signs.

Lets just draft him. We don’t have a QB that can lead us to wins on the roster. I can’t take it anymore.lol Sure we can give Mclown or Giraffe boy another shot, but were only going to lose,..bad. Sure we can wait next year and go thru another losing season. Just to get a QB next year. We can draft Mariota and let him sit while we lose. Spending the #1 pick on someone that is going to sit, doesn’t justify spending a #1 pick who should be able to play day one. Get Winston and lets give the guy a shot. In games decided by 7 points he wins them all. 26-1 college record. Played in a pro-style offense and can make all the NFL throws. Into tight windows. Will bring to life a year later, the term Dunkaneers. Every NFC south team has their QB. We need ours. Give him a Nike contract and Just do it! Lets do it!

Let me get this straight. You’re suggesting the Bucs hire a guy as their QB whose past is to keep is to keep it simple “questionable.” Then, while the Bucs are paying this QB millions of dollars they go out and hire up a babysitter to make sure said team leader minds his Ps and Qs. Never mind the Ps and Qs, just doesn’t commit any felonies or misdemeanors that could incur jail time.
So what exactly is this babysitter supposed to do to ensure said QB doesn’t screw up? Sure he can counsel and advise. But, when the QB blows him off is the babysitter supposed to commit a felony himself to ensure our miscreant doesn’t do something stupid?
If you can’t expect a highly paid football player to recognize what he’s got to lose and keep himself out of trouble, then you probably don’t want or need that player around.

Second, I guess you have never been to college because hooking up is fairly common. I don’t necessarily condone it but you are making way too much out of that…..I’m not going to debate the alleged rape. The information is there and he has been cleared in 3 independent investigations. Objective people who read the reports and look at the evidence realize this was a false allegation.
I acknowledged that the incident in the student union was stupid and poor judgement….if you want to let that influence your opinion then by all means…..

Joe’s next post likely will be about the Buccaneers exploring those footcuffs that would make Mr. Winston unmovable after he entered his home.
