Lovie Pledges “Aggressive” Free Agency

December 22nd, 2014

LoviesadBucs overlord of football operations Lovie Smith took to the podium at One Buc Palace today and was his usual glass-half-full self about the future.

This isn’t surprising. Lovie believes the Bucs are “on the verge” already.

Lovie talked about how the Bucs won’t be thinking about anything but beating the Saints on Sunday, and they’ll continue to play to win in March.

“Like always, we’re going to be as aggressive as possible to improve our ball club in any way, through every phase, free agency, draft, etc.,” Lovie said.

Joe has no doubt Lovie and Jason Licht plan to attack free agency. This isn’t 2010; NFL teams have to spend a majority of their money under the new labor agreement, and the Bucs will have plenty to spend once they shed some of the multiple players and salaries weighing them down.

Remember, Lovie began his reign saying he believes in spending every available nickel on players.

    Cool story, Lovie, bro.

Where are the good players? Where are the wins?

Picking 1st overall this year is on your failure.

“On the verge” of moving to London.

  2. Spirit of '76 Says:

Oh for the sake of all things holy, please, no more “aggressive” free agency. Did you learn nothing for this past season? The only production you got was from other teams cast offs. Please, I beg of you, no FA. You have not shown us as a competent evaluator of FA talent.

  3. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

I listened to his press conference ….to hear him speak in the future tense…gave me cold chills….

  4. DB55 Says:

There’s nothing aggressive about this team in any way, shape or form.

He should have we are going to nicely pursue FA. Nice guys finish last, lol, literally.

  5. DB55 Says:

  6. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I would like to see what Licht can do without Lovie being involved. It’s hard to competently assess the GM, when it’s the head coach with final say.

  7. J Moné Says:

Hell yes lovie go at it you can’t miss on grabbing Randal Cobb that screams aggressive!!! Evans -> Jackson->Cobb –>Mariota/Winston Gold.

  8. pete Says:

PLEASE – No more free agents!

  9. tgreg Says:

Lovie believes in wasting every nickel

  10. pick6 Says:

lovie needs to bring in more talent than he can possibly draft and get production from in the summer lottery. he doesn’t have a prayer of saving his job without overpaying a few FAs and hoping they can play up to expectations unlike last year’s batch. even if the bucs had one of their best drafts ever, some coach other than lovie will benefit from it without some impactful free agent signings. it boggles the mind that after last year’s “aggressive” offseason, we are entering the offseason with all of the same holes we had last year, plus a few new ones.

After all the homeruns L&L hit this past year man this definitely will excite the fans!! FOH!!!

  13. BucBob1 Says:

    @SteveK
Interesting, are you saying that this whole loosing thing, may be on purpose to disengage the fans, so the Glazers have an excuse to move the team to England?

  14. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie inspires no confidence in his repeated mutterings.

  15. Brandon Says:

I hate the fact that we now have to spend money just for the sake of spending money. I like Lovie Smith but obviously his free agents didn’t work out. At the time the Buccaneers were applauded by every sports media outlet and all the talking heads as being the winners of free agency… now the “Fans” come back bashing them. The fact is, free agency isn’t how you build a team. There are too many (A) Haynesworth-get-contract-and-quit players, (B) Anthony Collins-misled-by-not-enough-gametape players, (C) Carl Nicks-good-but-just-didn’t-pan-out players, and (D)Dashon Goldson-product-of-the-system players. Every once in a while, you get (E) a Vincent Jackson-type player, who might not quite live up to his contract, but you certainly don’t feel jaded by.

But L&L signed an (A) Michael Johnson, a (B) Anthony Collins and Josh McCown, a (D) Evan Dietrich-Smith, and really only one (E) Clinton McDonald. The moves looked pretty good at the time, I disagreed with letting a versatile, effective OG/OC, whose best position might have been RT, in Jeremy Zuttah, and I always liked Donald Penn but the fans here had been sharpening their pitchforks for him for the past season and a half before he was let go. But now we have to spend money…and no team that relies heavily on free agency ends up doing well. You have to draft well…and for the past 15 years, this team has certainly not drafted well.

First, we don’t have enough picks to replace all of last season’s FA busts, and if we did would you trust Lovie and staff to coach them up then start them?

A new HC is the only solution.

Most of you don’t know jack shtt about anything so can it.

They are not going to fire lovie no matter how many times you come here and look like a total bafoon.

  20. OB Says:

Lovie has presented the worst offense in the NFL since probably the merger of the AFL and the NFL.

This is indicative of a head coach without a clue as to what makes up an offense. Leaving McCown as the QB all year except when he was hurt, is beyond insanity, it is lunicy.

  21. SteveK Says:

    BucBob1,

I have no idea what is up with the Bucs. I do know that our Head Coach is NOT being accountable for his actions, and not playing the best possible players.

Lovie is loyal to a fault. If Lovie really believes Josh McCown is the best chance to win, then he needs to be let go immediately and have his head examined. There is no excuse to be this bad AND to not play the best players at any position, especially the young guys.

  22. DickBig Says:

Its not like Lovie walked into a Kansas City situation… He got a 4-12 broken team ruined by 2 horrible head coaches/coaching staffs.. football people understand it takes time, for the uneducated aka 90% of joebuc readers think you can just change head coaches and be a superbowl champ.. lmao

  27. bucrightoff Says:

Chiefs were 2-14 the year before Andy Reid arrived. Why do people have to lie and rewrtie history to try and make a guy with a 19-38 record against above .500 teams and with 1 playoff appearance his last 7 years as a coach anything that what he is: Not very good. It amazes me people seriously think Lovie is going to make us a consistent winning team. Clearly they are fans of the Kool Aid Lovie is selling. Explore his history past the surface level and you’ll be amazed how mediocre he is.

  28. "TheKevin" Says:

I’ve had it you are all correct. I just listened to the pressed and this guy Lovie is completely clueless. FIRE HIS ARSE!!! ARRRRRR!

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

Just coach lovie/ don’t get away from your skill set

  30. bucs4lyfe Says:

SteveK and JoeJoes Fungi Nails are the most brainless whatever you are to post on this site, I don’t even think it’s fair to say your fans, I guess you both work for some other franchise in the nfc south since you know so damn much. where did the sacks come from when schiano was here besides McCoy? they came from the linebackers morons but not this year which means that even if the sacks are the same the line play is better and still sorry ass Michael Johnson has 5+ sacks. the o line was a bad call and mccown thing I understand being that glennon is garbage and cant read defenses and no one wants to see that garbage checkdown all season again which he wouldn’t do since the line cant block. offensive coordinator automatically makes the offense better you simpleminded twins. damn I hope neither one of you can reproduce

You guys get it. That’s for sure.

  33. BucBob1 Says:

    @ SteveK
Thanks for your response. I too have my reservations about Lovie and wonder if he’s capable, of ever righting this ship. I do find the move to England prospect interesting. I think I remember you posting that once before. Another year of loosing, would further damage the fan base, possibly enough, for the Glazers to want to move the team to England. The NFL is considering expanding there, and the Glazers already have a foothold there with “Manchester United” Thanks for the inteligent conversation. Thats more than what I can say about someone else thats rearing his ugly head here today.

At Kevin…..dude chillout or shut the kcuf up. Wether we spend X amount of dollars to come to RJS or spend an entire afternoon pulling for this team we have every right to B!tch and complain at what has amounted to total regression. Try this on for size…..”Schiano was more successful in his two previous seasons than Lovie was this season”. Throw in the MIllions of wasted dollars in FA by L&L versus Schiano’s Freeman and MSRA problems and Schiano looks like the better coach. Even Mike Sullivan is an upgrade to Arroyo. I will give leslie Frazier the nod over Sheridan. But that is it.

  36. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol im on the wrong post my bad, im here with people talking about moving the team to London because they had yet another bad season as if they were a playoff teams the last few years lol you cant be from florida and if your not please jump off the skyway because as bad as this team is there is no real football fan that wants this team to leave, especially not if you live in Hillsborough county and paid taxes for that stadium

  37. willie d Says:

  38. Rutgers4Schiano Says:

I think I just saw “The kevin” walking into Mcdonalds with his fat wife and two bratty kids. He was wearing a Freeman jersey (figures) and trying to tell the Mcdonalds employees how to do their jobs (Yeah, that must be him) After he got his order he told his family how to eat (except his wife, she apprently is an expert) he then spotted a young man in a Saints (Brees) jersey lamenting on yesterdays elimination from the playoffs. The Kevin tore into him for not being a “True Fan”. The Saints fan gave “The kevin” a half a slap, “The Kevin” fell onto the floor, scattering Mcnuggetts everywhere, and cried.

  39. BucBob1 Says:

    @bucsforlyfe
Chill….Nobody wants the team to move to England, especially not me! On the other hand, we as Bucs fans should be aware of that possibility. Someone else mentioned it, and it just made me curious. I have lived here since 1979.

    anyway?

    Wow TheKevin –
Tell us how you really feel, you wouldn’t by chance be a tea party member would you?

  48. SteveK Says:

    Bucs4Lyfe,

Just look at the stats, obstacles, and hardships Schiano faced, and was ultimately crucified over…

Lovie gets a pass, but I sincerely question his ability to pull the strings. Lovie is too stubborn to move on from a lesser talented player.

It is clear to everyone that is a Bucs fan, that Josh McCown is not as good as Mike Glennon, and McCown isn’t even the best QB in the NFC South from his family.

No hard feelings, but I do enjoy our exchange.

  49. SteveK Says:

I third the “sign Suh” push.

  50. JJV Says:

“True fans” would not act, think, nor speak like that. We should be ashamed to not follow our leader.Tis the season to believe in Santa and Lovie.

  51. bucs4lyfe Says:

What pass is lovie getting? none from this site, everyone wants a winning head coach fired in his first season are you kidding me? did you not see greg schiano coach the two years he was here? he was the worst coach i’d ever seen, the damn referee’s didn’t even like the guy, your yelling at the referee on the sideline like kids? that dude had no clue how to run a franchise and basically turned the bucs into a college program and now were just getting back to letting our players be adults….greg schiano is the idiot coach that let Michael Bennett walk, there would be no issue with the d line right now, I even thought it was a bad idea to let roy miller walk being that we had the #1 rush defense with him and Bennett. every hardship schiano faced was his damn fault. he’s the one who caused the quarterback issue just like lovie takes the blame for the oline. glennon is a mouth breather and I cant wait until he get’s out of tampa with the rest of the trash, atleast mccown has something to provide off the bench in terms of experience and quarterback intelligence

  52. DB55 Says:

I’d 4th the Suh signing but he’s not nice enough to play for us. He too mean a thug on the field and we just can’t have that on this team.

    Ice cream for everyone.

  53. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah cause signing Suh and tying up more than 1/5 of our entire cap towards two interior defensive lineman is exactly what we need to do. Factor in Bust-a-roo Johnson and we’re looking at upwards of $40 million between 3 lineman, not even offensive lineman. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

  54. aj Says:

Sadly, McCown is the team’s best chance to win. Glennon is not the answer. The answer is the first pick of the draft. Best offensive lineman on the board every single pick after that, unless there is an absolute steal at defensive end.

Hard to trust Lovie to find gems in free agency when he was so bad last year, and got the players he wanted. They need an offensive co-ordinator before then so they know who to target, especially for blocking scheme up front.

  55. Simpleasthat Says:

Looks like we might have our own McClown vs. McClown super bowl next Sun.

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can we please try to focus on realistic constructive solutions torward solving our problems…
Firing Lovie is not an option for us now. Continuing to spend countless posts damning him might feel good….but its actually getting very boring.
I’m interested in things like who would be good Oline acquisitions in FA….how about MLB…a 3rd WR or is Murphy OK? Punter?, KR/PR…..
Are some of our non-productive players good enough for depth or should they be cut?

After last year’s free agency debacle, I’d be totally okay if we signed no free agents whatsoever.

If you look back, Michael Johnson was rated #7 best free agent in PFT’s Hot 100.

No way to avoid the guaranteed money for big name FA’s, and that’s the real evil that you keep paying for.

  73. Tampabaybucfan Says:

@Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston

Thanks for providing some info on FAs……rather than the constant redundancy…

There is something about going after leftover QBs in FA that I don’t like….I really hope we get a shot at Mariota…..but I don’t think we will pull the trigger with our first pick on Winston…..maybe trade down & take him later if that is a possibility.

  74. Bogiedr Says:

Why is everyone forgetting that last free agency period the Bucs were celebrated for signing the best FA s available. They simply did not work out. The book on Collins never showed anyone he’d be a bust, same for Casper and company, they did not work out. If you want to say they are bad talent evaluators, then they also get credit for Lansanah, J. Smith, McDugal, (they kept him on the roster). Just stating facts. Go back in Bucs history and find a solid GM anytime! Just saying.

  75. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Hey..the Bucs sucked last year…all the FA players knew the score….the UFA players the Bucs signed only came here becuase of the BIG contract….then checked out

  79. Bucfan4life Says:

Lol to all of you saying skip free agency. This team needs upgrades at 14-16 positions. So the Bucs have 7 draft choices and of those less than half of those will actually pan out (even for a competent staff). As a Buc fan I hope they go full throttle in the draft and free agency. The draft alone will not provide the number of players we need to start winning again. Last year was a disaster and this regime may not do any better in 2015 but I want them to at least try and improve the garbage we saw on the field this year.

I’d be happy with us being quiet the first week in free agency and signing some second tier free agents. We dont need to commit another $50mil in guaranteed money on some other team’s scraps. We need to sign at least 8 draft picks this year to infuse our roster with some wholesale contracts and youth. My wishes don’t matter and i’m positive we will sign 2-3 of the top 15 free agents.

  81. Brent Says:

All you losers talking London take a Valium. You have to be some kind of negative thinker to talk that bs. We all know Lovie had a brutal year and is in the hot seat next year. Talking about it is boring. Wish we could fire the glazers first. Who gets rid of chucky for nobody Raheem Morris? You gotta be a real Putz to make that move. Now your paying 3 coaches. We need a consultant to help the lads out – parcel, jimmy Johnson, polian, wolf.

  82. SilentBob Says:

I have been reading joebucsfan for a couple years, bucs fan since I was six when they lost the championship to the Rams in 98 I bleed red and black I come here for the news and just to spectate I do often read others comments , and I must say I can’t take it any more . Lovie smith needs to go he has turned us in to a laughing stock and has done nothing but lie . I lived about two hours away and moved to tampa so I could endulge in season tickets but as long as he’s in charge I can hardly bare to watch the games on tv nevertheless pay to see this circus as sad as it is to admit I root for mccown to not get up after teams have a hay day with our oline consisting of players who would be lucky to make other teams practice squad for him to say he’s playing to win is just another lie guy is such a joke he went to the fast food place my girl works at 15 minutes ago and wanted to convey to her how beautiful she is .LoL sounds like a real happily married Christian man or maybe that was lie too. This guy is full of crap and everybody bought it including myself . at this point give me schiano back . Aggressive free agency first pick won’t matter if this clowns involved.

  83. BirdDoggers Says:

The Glazers might pull the reins back on the free agent spending. They haven’t received much in return in the past few years. There is a salary cap and floor but that doesn’t mean the money has to flow like wine, just for the sake of spending.

  84. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Agreed Brent. It starts with the Glazers. They need to sell.

  85. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Brent: a Ron Wolf or Bill Polian type of GM to run team operations and keep talent evaluation away from Lovie would definitely be a move in the right direction. About the Glazers: I can think of 2 guys right now who I’d rather have owning the Bucs who are currently here in Tampa: Eddie DeBartolo and Jeffry Vinik. Either one of these guys would not have let the franchise get so rock bottom and would definitely handle public relations a lot better than the Glazer lads.

  86. mikeh Says:

and what has colt McCoy done in this league? he is no better than glennon!

  87. SteveK Says:

    Bucs4lyfe,

Thanks for sharing the post. I respectfully disagree about Schiano being at fault for the QB situation. IMHO, Schiano took the fall bc Freeman went complete AWOL.

  88. Pewter_Power Says:

Who cares how “aggressive” they will go after free agenta if the guys evaluating the talent don’t know what they’re doing? Maybe they will resign Penn, Joseph and Zuttah?

  89. DB55 Says:

Brent and skyline (formerly bucfan87?) win this thread.

  90. SteveK Says:

My main gripe with Lovie is his refusal to play Glennon, and get him some more experience/ a better evaluation.

I fear we give up on Glennon without a proper evaluation.

It’s just hard to fathom that Schiano had 3 tragedies: MRSA, Adderall twins, and Freeman’s meltdown, while winning twice the games as Lovie, yet Lovie doesn’t get billboards in his honor?

Schiano over absorbed the “hate” from our sh!tty season(s).

I want to see Lovie bring back the D, and we need better offensive coaching.

  91. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    I’m not 87′

  92. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

SteveK, I agree that Glennon has not been treated fairly. As a rookie he was thrown in to a bad situation. He did well for a 3rd rounder. This year, again, he was thrown in to a bad situation. I would like to see what happens when he is named a starter and gets a full preseason to develop and work with 1st team. Even when he was the starter Lovie would not admit he was the starter and never named him as such. That had to mess with him mentally by not having the full trust of the coaching staff. Honestly, I don’t think Lovie had any intentions of playing him this year, but McCown got hurt. I’m hoping they get rid of McCown and let Glennon be the guy next year while letting whichever QB (praying) they draft sit until they are needed.

  93. SteveK Says:

    Skyline,

Agreed. Lovie has his reasons, right or wrong.

I would love to draft a franchise QB, but our team isn’t good enough to draft that in the 1st round. It would be irresponsible to take a QB when we have no O Line or edge rushers to boot. Out team is several holes away, and what QB are you confident can be developed in this envoronment.

We need an OT, OG, C, DE, SS, FS, QB, MLB, SLB, and so on. A good QB can do some things, but you need an O Line. Look at the Cow Boys.

  94. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Why is everyone down on Foster?

  95. SteveK Says:

    Skyline,

Foster is not very good in coverage. I like him at SLB.

Imagine drafting Keuchly, instead of Barron.

  96. nate Says:

Cut johnson sign nadamka suh… trade mike glennon doug martin our 2nd round pick to houston for jadevon clowney.. then we have a dline of mccoy, suh, clowney, and whoever wins the other de spot…

  97. Kevin Says:

And why does Lovie assume Team Glazer is just going to let him have his way again? I mean, this years results speak for themselves.

  98. BucBob1 Says:

    @Brent says
Why do you think the real reason the Glazers hired Raheem Morris? Because they got him on the cheap. They were also way under the salary cap that season too. So where do you think all the profits went from that season? To “Manchester United” IN ENGLAND! When the Glazers first bought this team they threatened to move it, if we didn’t build a new stadium. Of course you didn’t know that because you were probably still getting your diapers changed. Football is a business, thats all about the money. To think that Jimmy Johnson is going to leave his well paid cushy TV gig, and come here as a consultant, is laughable.

  99. DB55 Says:

    Skyline

I’m so with you. Giving glennon a full ps and letting the draft pick sit 1-2 years. Ask Steve young and he’ll tell you that above talent your qb needs to be smart. Mccown is definitely in the beauty category not the brains catagory. That dude has some nice hair.

  100. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Nate, Clowney won’t be traded and we don’t have money for Suh. He would want a contract similar to McCoy.

  101. Lovie equals 2015 Blackouts Says:

    @Josh Freeman

I agreed with your comment up until you said keep yourself.

But all the others… no doubt. Starting with Barrett Ruud… all the way down the line to this past year’s oline and DBs.

If you don’t have a replacement, then you don’t cut the guy until you find his replacement. This includes re-signing your own guys you developed. Re-sign the starters… and if they get beat out in preseason then so be it… but for the love of God, don’t just let them walk.

  102. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for posting all those potential free agents Skyline. I’m sure a # of them will be re-signed by their current teams though. Would love to get Jason Pierre-Paul and Michael Crabtree to Tampa Bay for anything close to the salaries listed. I have said for awhile that we should re-sign Clayborn to a 2 year incentive laden heavy deal.

  103. Phil Says:

To me, the most important signing will be in the next few weeks. Offensive coordinator and OL coach are critical

  104. Patrick in VA Says:

I would love to see us pick up a ton of players whose names I’ve never heard of at a bargain price and let them come in and play solid ball. Let them come in here and earn their big money in house instead of giving them a ton for work they did for someone else. Use that money to give LVD a great deal that will keep him happy and producing for Tampa for years to come.

I’d much rather have a team full of middle of the road talent with a few young stars we picked up in the draft rather than giving a few people the lion’s share of the cap and then filling in with whatever we can find in the bargain bin.

Especially with Lovie’s defensive scheme that relies a lot more on being in your gaps than it does on individual talent, we need some true role players who we know we can rely on to just do their job.

  105. Phil Says:

Hopefully Lovie won’t be here to spend any of the Glazer’s money.

  106. Dan Says:

I have a bad feeling Lovie is going to bring in Jay Cutler. Very few things could deter me from watching the Bucs but giving up the 1st overall pick for Cutler would certainly do it. Hell, anything more than a 3rd rounder for Cutler would probably do it.

  107. Bucfan4life Says:

Please stop it about Glennon. He auditioned and we all saw plenty to know he sucks. This is like the big debate between Leftwich and L McCowna few years ago. Glennon will never be a starter again because he is inaccurate and slow as hell. Putting him out there to be slaughtered would decrease his trade possibilities by putting more bad play on tape and possible injury.

  108. Brent Says:

@buc bob- I was there. a lot of owners use that ploy to get a free stadium or help. So what? You think they are the first to do that. Nobody knows what’s going to happen and there’s no reason to worry. I believe bucs are here for good. only thing I am concerned about right now is whether L and L have what it takes to build a winner.

  109. MWilson Says:

Bucfan4life, Glennon sucks huh? Really? His Career stats say otherwise: 19 games, 29 TD, 19 Ints. This season alone in 3 games, 10 TD, 6 int. McCown this season so far: 13 games, 10 TD, 13 int, 9 fumbles. Now for some comparison: Colt McCoy, 5 games, 5 TD, 3 Int. Look at Andrew Luck, his first season 15 games TD/Int 23/18, 2nd year 16 games 23/9. Glennon has better numbers than Luck, Manning (either one) and most other QB’s over his first few seasons and he has not ever had the benefit of having played with the first team all preseason as those other QB’s have. YOu are so very wrong on his talent and potential and if Lovie lets him go mark my words Tampa will regret it. Just like Indianapolis did when they let Manning go.

  110. ihateloviesmith Says:

if you really are josh freeman may I ask you one thing brother, after your very promising 10-6 record and all our hopes were resting on you, just exactly, what the hell happened? did you get caught up in the night life and all the excesses of celebrity and fame not counting the damn money you were making as a I would have to say at my age, a kid, to being an albatross and a outcast in the sport that you was once thought of as a promising young QB. can you and will you, if it is you, clear this up for the true buccaneer fans, and may I ask one more thing do you see a comeback or the cfl in your future. enquiring minds want to know. if it is you grow a pair and tell it like it is man.

  111. Bucfan4life Says:

Lol. Glennon sucks and you will never get to prove your point because he will never be a starter anywhere else. Mr Checkdown couldn’t in games because he isn’t any good. You will find out what other teams think of him when we are only able to get a 5th or 6th rounder when we trade him. Use all the stats you want to build your case. Just watch him on the field and than check the scoreboard and that is all one really needs to do to figure out the guy doesn’t have enough talent to be successful at this level.
