Talib’s Uncertain Future With Broncos

March 3rd, 2018

Please don’t delay. … And John Elway weighs in.

Joe has been vocal urging Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager to go trade a low-rent draft pick for Aqib Talib.

The secondary of the Bucs is a mess with a cloudy future. We all know Brent Grimes is a free agent, which means he just as easily could retire like Joe Hawley or sign with another team.

Solid veteran Robert McClain is also a free agent. He, too, could decide just as easily not to return.

And if that happens, we are looking at Vernon Hargreaves, who fell off the map in his sophomore season, and Ryan Smith as starting corners. Joe hopes that prospect didn’t make you yack into your bowl of Wheaties.

Why does Joe advocate a trade for Talib? Well, when Broncos shotcaller John Elway spoke this week at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, he didn’t give Talib any sort of ringing endorsement. In other words, Talib may likely be a salary cap casualty.

“We’ll see. We’ll look at that,” Elway said. “Like I said, we’re looking at every option that we can and where our football team is. I’m not saying [Talib will] be back for sure, but I’m not going to say [he is] gone.”

Talib likely could be had cheap. Why shouldn’t the Bucs wait until he is cut? Well, if you trade for a guy, he is yours. Like with Grimes and McClain, if Taib gets out on the open market, he could sign with anyone.

Draft an elite corner trade him away so he can help other teams win super bowls then bring him back at the end of his career. OHHHH Tampaaa

  2. CarolinaBucFan Says:

I think the problem is finding out what other teams are offering for him. We’re all pretty much on the same page on trading a late draft pick for him, so Licht probably realizes that too. But how do we find out if another team is willing to send a higher round pick for him?

Like with Quinn being traded for a third, or whatever it was, how do we know we didn’t offer a fourth and just got outbid?

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t like trading draft picks but in this case Joe may be right…..perhaps a conditional 7th rounder for Talib.

We don’t need to be competing for his services and I fell somewhat comfortable with his return (and that puzzles me). Perhaps I think he has grown up.

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

If some had their way, The Bucs would already have 3 old, hurt players and 1 draft pick left!!!!!!!!! It is like they want the defense to fail, and blame it on “play-calling” and just say look at all the past “pro-bowlers” on this roster and want the coaches fired!!!!!!!

Look at the roster from talk show host dominik days, and it has been a FULL roster rebuild!!!!! For the first time in a almost 10 years, we actually had starters and depth at LB and WR (and maybe even tackle)!!!!!! This team needs to keep that going, and giving away resources for a DE with a bad back, that has majorly fallen off the last 3 years!!!!!

We can get injured DE without trading picks!!!!!!!!!! We can get old CB that are not good anymore without trading picks!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!

  5. John meeks Says:

I wander if our GM will sober up in time for free agency, and then if he can do it again before the draft.seems to me that’s asking alot!

  6. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    What a joke!

  7. John meeks Says:

Bucs realist ,I assure you that you can’t fix a defensive just sitting and watching proven players sign elsewhere for late draft picks,we need pass rushers very badly yet our GM sits on his assure and does nothing.im a patient man,but I don’t like stupid!so far with the exception of our new defensive line coach, this off-season has been all stupid and that’s on our GM as its his job to build a football team!

  8. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

No thanks, I’ll pass. Save the draft picks for leverage to obtain a certain younger, better character kid.

    Go Bucs!

  9. John meeks Says:

So far it goes like this.no Campbell, Quinn, peters, talib, bennett, peppers.next it will go no chubb, keys, davenport, yet they expect improvement because of me brentson buckner.no disrespect to me buckner, but you can’t make below average players great.as Denny green once said, they are what we thought they were!

  10. Defense Rules Says:

@Realist … “Look at the roster from talk show host dominik days, and it has been a FULL roster rebuild!!!!!” Uhhh Realist, don’t disagree that we’re in ‘FULL roster rebuild’ mode, however, a big part of that is Licht’s own doing & another part is normal attrition. We have (literally) given away a number of pretty decent players (like Penn & Zuttah) since he’s been here. Instead of drafting their replacements, Licht could’ve used the draft picks he spent to replace them on, oh let’s see … drafting some guys who play DEFENSE.

Not saying Dominick did us any favors by any means, but the cupboard wasn’t totally bare when Licht came. He’s into his FIFTH year right now, and by my estimate we could use NINE new starters (LG, C, RB, NT, 2 DE, 2 CB, SS, PK). Oh wait, make that TEN new starters … plus better key rotational players and better depth.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I really hope the Broncos re-sign him.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

Don’t worry I highly doubt bucs will touch Talib or any player with talent for that matter it does not fit the glazer business model to have or acquire players with talent… I am sure they will continue to bring in heartless career losers with no drive and those who will lose with dignity since they have zero desire to field a respectable product

  13. Walter Seidel Says:

Please do NOT bring Talib back.

  14. Ndog Says:

Get back Grimes and sign Tru Johnson so we don’t need to bring in this hot head. Get Michael Bennett, as there is no one else, and if by chance Suh gets cut bring him in. Also sign a starting left guard and a RB then we are free to draft BPA. No need to be desperate.

  15. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Tru Johnson slam dunk !

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Realist is 100% correct.

Here’s the thing. Jason Licht did the right thing by getting rid of them. He was thinking long road, not short road. When you draft a franchise quarterback, you need to fill out the offense with young, good players to develop with him.

If Licht had not done that, everyone here would be blaming him for not building the offense for Winston. You know I’m not wrong on that. You’ve seen how Tampa fans are.

It was Mark Dominic’s job to build around McCoy. He had years to do it, and failed miserably. It’s unfortunate, but true. Year after year, Tampa spent picks on defense while Dom was here, and about 85% of them were horrible picks. Maybe worse.

It was different for Jason Licht. With a true franchise QB, the draft goals change in order. You make sure to give him good protection and good weapons. Licht has done that…in fact, outside of RB, he’s only just finished doing that last year. Those players and Jameis will become very good. Together.

Getting rid of Zuttah, Penn, Revis (you didn’t mention him), etc were very smart moves.

Has Donald Penn helped the Raiders get a superbowl? Nope. Instead, their line has barely kept Derek Carr standing.

Zuttah doesn’t even have a job. I don’t see ANYONE saying to bring him back.

Guess what? Revis is available too, after spending most of the year injured. Buyer beware.

And during that time, even though he had to build the offense first, Licht did address the defense in the draft from time to time, and he got some good players. The Linebackers for example.

Yes, now is the time he MUST focus on defense.

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    Walter Seidel

Why Not? Are you against talent? Talib would instantly be the most talented and proven player on defensive roster hands down. Yeah hell no let us stay in basement for another decade plus and leave the talented players for other teams…

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would agree with trading for Bennett (6th or 7th) after thinking it through though.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    tmaxcon Says
“Talib would instantly be the most talented and proven player on defensive roster hands down.”

I disagree with that. But I know you will never agree that McCoy is more talented and a better leader.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    Ndog

Be honest with yourself. Bucs have zero shot at any top tier free agents. No players is with a choice will pick bucs. Decades of losing and piss poor decsions by glazers have rendered the bucs the least desirable location in nfl

  21. Mr. Ed Says:

If you trade for him you’re stick with his contract.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

[Sorry man, that’s too far. Going to have to put you in the cooler for a few months. Bad enough you are a broken record for such a stupid subject. Joe cannot tolerate anyone suggesting a player is guilty of committing a felony much less molesting children. If you weren’t such a loyal poster for so many years, you’d be gone for good for that. Remember, Joe is responsible for every word typed on this site. — Joe]

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Check this out, per PFT:

Robbery charge against Marlon Humphrey dismissed

A judge dismissed a felony robbery charge against Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey on Friday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN reports.

An Uber driver accused Humphrey of stealing a phone charger in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, but Judge Joanne Jannik found no probable cause after hearing evidence Thursday.

“We are happy for Marlon and the entire Humphrey family,” Humphrey’s attorney, Paul Patterson, told ESPN. “The evidence was overwhelming that the Uber driver was the aggressor and escalated a situation…”

Yeah, turns out the Bucs ain’t the only team having Uber issues! You can’t trut their drivers at all.

  24. tmaxcon Says:

I have no agenda the main issue with bucs is the mentally weak soft approach by its highest paid defender who is a huge liability in run game and disappears when it matters most. Not to mention is a complete clown and a total embarrassment to masculinity

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @tmaxcon

I love how you say you have no agenda…and then go right into your agenda.

Just like about 90% of your posts, lol.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

It’s not an agenda when its plan as day that hebis the root problem. I’ll be proven right as usual

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai, the point was that getting rid of perfectly functional players (LIKE Penn & Zuttah) caused us to use draft picks to replace them. Draft picks that Bucs could’ve used on higher priority needs. Those higher priority needs (like DEs & CBs) have now come back to bite us in the proverbial butt. And the irony of it all is that our offense isn’t really producing any more POINTS than it did prior to Licht under Schiano & Raheem (our 2010-2013 POINTS SCORED PER SEASON averaged 326 … for 2014-2017 our seasonal average was 327).

  28. DB55 Says:

I’ll bet $5 that Talib and Bennett sign with NE.

  29. DanBucsFan Says:

I can honestly say im starting to agree with Tmaxon. Bucs should be on phone with every team asking who is available and explain that we are in serious business of aquiring players at certain positions so before u make a deal hit us back up and we may offer more than u are currently about to receive for said players. I dont imagine its that hard but if your Gm just sits on his @$$ and waits around he will be more than likely looking for work as a mailman soon or bus driver as I cant see him working as a espn annalist or latching on with another nfl team after his showing in Tampa. Maybe and just maybe as a college scout but other than that id rather have any othe Gm in the league at this point.

  30. BigHogHaynes Says:

TRUMPMAXCON acts like GMC goes out and plays the game all by himself…..football is a team sport! TALENT is what we need more of ……and a new Coaching Staff! CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL ON N BOTH SIDES OF THE BAY!!

  31. John meeks Says:

Danbucsfan, after our GM is fired,he will not be driving a bus!he can’t stay sober long enough to make a phone call inquiring about defensive ends much less drive a bus!

  32. Not there yet Says:

Please stop exaggerating the corner position before free agency and the draft starts. We had mcclan and grimes when Julio Jones went for 250 almost in one half. Brent grimes can’t even cover the best receiver on the opposite team anymore so at his age no he does not have any leverage, I’d lose all respect for the team going all in and over paying for an old corner with all the young free agents out there. It’s time for an overhaul. Grimes and mcclain can kick rocks. Like the teams playoff hope ride one those two guys please with the exaggerating

  33. SB Says:

Been watching the Combine all morning. Chubb is gonna be moving up the draft boards with a great workout all around.

  34. Bird Says:

Broncos will not trade talib to patriots.

Broncos want to win afc championship to get to super bowl. Who represents afc every year ?

    Patriots.

They could trade him to us Really think so. We are NFC team they rarely face at bottom of league. If they were smart.

  35. DB55 Says:

    Thought Talib was a FA.

  36. Duke Says:

    SB,

Chubb is already at the top. He’s not dropping if that’s what you mean.

  37. Bird Says:

Broncos have 2 years left with him.

They could cut if no takers.

There will be a taker though

  38. Duke Says:

    Big realist,

Question, if the Bucs keep going the way they have been which is keeping all the picks and building the team with young drafted players. The problem is that 7 draft picks per year yield 3 starters per yr. That is the 21 young players in 7yrs.
Now the 3 that is acquired yr 1 , will be injured and old in 5yrs years. Year 6 will be needing 3 more New players to replace them.

Bottom line, draft picks after RD 3 are the equivalent to lotto tickets. Poor team like poor people rely on them to pay off. Reality is the odds are very very unfavorable for a 4th-7th RD pick to make it a single year.

So go buy your lotto tonight, and retire Monday

  39. BringBucsBack Says:

    BetterBuccin, that “food” sounds delicious!

  40. BigMacAttack Says:

    SB,

Chubb is already at the top. He’s not dropping if that’s what you mean.
    _____________
How do you figure? Barkley is the clear top RB. Chubb was projected to be 3rd rd. Not anymore.

  42. JonBuc Says:

Alan said and summed it up perfectedly:

Draft an elite corner trade him away so he can help other teams win super bowls then bring him back at the end of his career. OHHHH Tampaaa

It’s like a hot chick that dumps you, gets rogered all around town, and returns to you used, abused and older looking to get taken care of financially. Nah! I can see some sulking/quitting once the season goes sideways…and it will with Licht’s Out steering the ship with his .333 winning/losing percentage.

  43. JonBuc Says:

And I believe folks are getting there Chubbs/swords crossed. The D-Line top 5 pick from NC State Bradley & Nick the RB from Georgia…probable 3rd round pick or so.

  44. LakeLand Says:

John Elway would take a 7th round pick for Talib. He ‘s trying to create cap space to sign Kirk Cousins. He might even give the Bucs a draft pick, to eat Talib salary.

  45. Jeremy Says:

Dude why would any of these guys come back? Would you go back to an old job after you parted ways? Of course not. Joe you are naive.

  46. NFLNut Says:

    ********************

How about a 3rd and a conditional 6th in 2019 to Seattle for BOTH Earl Thomas and Michael Bennett and a 7th and a conditional 7th in 2019 to Denver for Talib?

Then use remaining cap space to sign Malcolm Butler.

In the draft, trade the #7 for the #21 and #22 and draft Will Hernandez, Billy Price, Derrius Guice, Kendrick Norton, Desmond Harrison and DJ Reed.

We could also go defense first and draft Arden Key, Maurice Hurst, Derrius Guice, Frank Ragnow, Desmond Harrison and DJ Reed.

    Lots of options available.

    ******************

  47. Mord Says:

There’s reasonable desperation in these comments, but… Maybe Licht is more calmly waiting to see who (including Talib) really ends up “free” or to make a trade for someone who brings a little less baggage and perhaps is at an age on the younger side of the bell-curve. Maybe Talib and Quinn don’t grade out as “must acquire no matter what” with other, perhaps more highly graded players yet to pursue? . Maybe Miami gets Quinn because they already have enough D-Line depth that they can afford to be wrong (if his back is an issue)

The maybes; waiting and/or inaction at this point is nerve wracking, given recent history. Licht is either supremely confident, or irresponsibly oblivious.. but .. It ain’t over yet

    Maybe both.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

Quinn, Talib, resign Grimes, sign a S, draft a DL, a couple of corners and boy is this defense remarkably different next year.

Instead we’ll see Ryan Smith and Chris Conte on the field again next season continuing to be the worst duo in the history of the NFL (well at least the worst duo I’ve ever seen in my 30 years as a fan).

  49. Duke Says:

    SB,

My mistake, I thought D.E.. It makes sense 100% . I couldn’t think of a way that a D.E. made a jump to the top spot considering the draft order and the team’s at the top needing a QB.

On the player you actually meant, I’m curious as to why He is or was projected 3rd to begin with. Yes, I totally agree with you, He is going to move up considerably.

  50. Duke Says:

    JonBuc,
    Guilty as charged!

  51. lambchop Says:

If the Bucs don’t put a competitive team with a no nonsense coaching staff in place, Aqib Talib is just going to be cashing his paycheck all season. He is not the kind of player to light a fire under his team and motivate them to play better. Take it to the bank. Talib has to be babysat. Not going to work out in TB, even if he comes, with the current state of the Bucs.
