Jameis Influenced Playoff Game

January 8th, 2018

The long arm of America’s Quarterback was felt Sunday, even if Jameis Winston and the Bucs were watching football from home, as is the team’s custom come January.

Remember how the Bucs ended the season. The eventual NFC South champion Saints had the Bucs pinned back on the five-yard line. Only 1:58 left in the game. No timeouts left for the Bucs. Jameis then engineered a winning drive for the ages, capped with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin.

Joe is convinced this memory was fresh in the head of Saints coach Sean Payton yesterday in their wild card round playoff win over the Stinking Panthers.

Consider with 1:51 remaining and the Saints clinging to a 31-26 lead, New Orleans had the ball. Fourth down. The Stinking Panthers were without a timeout. Payton, instead of trying a long field goal or punting to pin down the Stinking Panthers, elected to go for the first down on fourth-and-two from the Carolina-31.

Payton’s gamble didn’t work, and only a combination of a blown call (it should not have been a Carolina interception if you take the stupid what-is-a-catch NFL rule by its literal interpretation) and Panthers receiver Devin Funchess losing a potential game-winning touchdown pass in the lights let the Saints escape with a win.

You can’t tell Joe that Payton didn’t remember the last time his team played, and facing virtually the same late-game circumstance, Jameis ran through his defense for the game-winning drive. That motivated Payton to try to dislocate Dirk Koetter’s shoulder.

Jamies is a much better passer than Cam, but I get what you are saying.

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

I had the exact same thought lol.

Also thought the same thing as Wausa – in that I’d much rather make Cam Newton pass for the whole field in under 2 mins than Jameis. They should have punted. What Jameis did is not normal or statistically likely to happen often at all lol

You know, I was going to scoff at this but it turns out if looking at numbers alone you’re right. Jameis’ “numbers” look better. Granted, Cam Newton does things on the field that no other QB does and I think he has a far superior deep ball.

  4. DB55 Says:

Yea idk about that Cam can make some pretty nasty throws. He had an off year statistically prob bc of the surgery and KB being gone almost for Olsen too. . You see what Clay and Shep are doing, not much.

But cam got a perty deep ball. And he can Hall ass.

If jw was allowed to run as part of his game we’d be better off for it.

You’re right. I’ve never seen another QB act like as big of a baby as Cam did when he got blasted and came off the field. “Oh my eye hurts” yet I’m gonna stumble around like a drunken teenager and make it look like I have a concussion. The only reason he did that whole escapade was he wanted the “he’s so tough, did you see how hurt he was and then he came back into the game!” treatment. If he’s gonna play the concussion scenario up like that then his ass needs to be carted to the locker room and put through proper evaluation.

cam is in the playoff most years and the bucs and their heartless choirboys led by cancer93 reside full time in the basement.

just like most of you can not tell the difference between popularity and greatness you can tell the difference between bad character and passion.

  7. BrianBucs Says:

If the Saint’s ILB had not dropped what should have been a sure Jameis INT at the Bucs 15 in that final drive that hit him right in the hands the game would have ended right there

  8. BucFanFromOH Says:

    @tmaxcon

What you said has literally nothing to do with my post, so why are you referencing me in it? Did I say JW was better than Cam? Did I say ANYTHING about Gerald? It sounds to me like you’re claiming Cam’s whole charade was simply him being passionate (although I could be wrong as your lack of basic punctuation and grammar make it difficult to read what you write).

Gmc did the same exact thing one game this year. Thought he was dying on the field.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    oh

it had everything to do with it…. you people embarrass yourselves time and time again going after peoples character when a player is passionate yet you celebrate choirboy quitters like mccoy…

Thanks for the clarification, but hardly the same scenario. GMC hurt is arm (bicep) and was clearly in PHYSICAL pain. He came off the field holding his arm and did not return (although his sideline “crying” seemed a bit over the top). Cam on the other hand was faking a concussion by wobbling around and acting like he couldn’t even walk to the sidelines, and all that happened was he “thought something may or may not have poked him in the eye.” He made a whole scene about it and halted the game, yet his injury was so insignificant he came back to play the next series.

At least when GMC threw his fit he was legitimately hurt and did not return.

Laughable that you call what Cam did being passionate hahaha. I suppose you think Sean Payton’s exchange with Dirk was him being passionate as well? Also, I have never “celebrated” GMC, but nice try dude.

    Jameis needs a DEFENSE..Period!!

Well, I don’t know about everything said prior to this quote but I agree with this. There seems to be a different set of criteria for QBs when it comes to the concussion protocol and that should not be the case.

  15. SB Says:

OH…….GMC slept with Tmax’s wife and he will never get over it. I skip over all of his posts. Prolly you should too.

  16. BucFanFromOH Says:

I always do as well, but when someone deliberately tags you in a comment you gotta respond lol.

  17. Steven007 Says:

OH, give Trollmax a break. She’s perpetually on her monthly and has had the hots for Cutie93 FOREVER. This never gets old. So GMC “Has never won a meaningful game”… it was long ago defined by Trollmax that a meaningful game was nothing less than a SB win, but let’s just say playoff win to open it up a bit. So yeah, GMC has never won a meaningful game. So kind of like:

    – Aaron Donald

    – Ndamukong Suh

    – Geno Atkins (this gets all the DT’s out of the way that can’t somehow, magically will their team to a win, big softies!)

    – Brent Grimes (playoffs but obviously too soft to make it to the SB)

    – Jameis Winston

    – Lavonte David

    – Mike Evans

….the list goes on. Career losers! [eye roll]

It’s a shame. It really is.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

I think it had to do more with Cam and less about Winston and last week….cam caught fire….

that pass to funchess over the middle was a strike and the pass to kalin clay on the sideline was a strike too!!!….

I think he fears cam more than Winston right now….that will change soon…..GO BUCS!!!!

I was referring to the time gmc got poked in the eye not his bicep. When he got poked in the eye he carried on, rolled around and cried just like cam did.

    D-Rome
Not sure it’s a q.b thing rather than a Cam thing. Based on what I’ve seen it seems like Cam gets much less protection than other QBs. Jameis too! It’s rare for either of them to get roughing calls much less “forward progress” calls ala MM and it appears as though both the Bucs and panthers are willing to play they’re QBs while they’re hurt.

My bad man, I don’t remember that play but if that’s the case then it sounds like pretty much the exact same thing. Gerald seems to often be injured.

  22. Steven007 Says:

DB, that forward progress call was one of the worst I’ve seen lately. And I’ve seen a lot as we all have. Also the pass into triple coverage in the end zone that was some how batted back to him had to be one of the more fortuitous plays in recent wildcard playoff history. The Titans are a mess and very very lucky.

  23. DB55 Says:

I thought the ball was over the line myself. It’s becoming more and more evident to me that the nfl is fixed. Bias for certain “faces of the nfl”. You clearly see it with the Patriots ie Steelers games when Jesse James “dropped” the TD pass that was complete bull. How about Tb v Carolina when the refs gave peppers the ball and peppers admits he didn’t have it.

  24. Robert Says:

Can’t believe jameis is still on the team. i’ll come back when the experiment ends.

  25. Steven007 Says:

    DB:

That’s right the Pepper’s play! Now I’m not condoning Jameis going crazy, he does enough of that already, but at least there was a legitimate reason why that time. Unbelievable.

  26. Steven007 Says:

    55:

More on the Mariotta call – I just read this online:

LOSER: THE NFL SERIOUSLY GAVE JEFF TRIPLETTE A PLAYOFF GAME?

Jeff Triplette. He’s the NFL ref you hope you don’t see when your favorite team has a big game to play. He’s truly awful. So when people realized it was Triplette on the mic early in the game making all the calls from the field, a collective groan emerged from fans and those who cover these games for a living.

Incredibly (and we say that in the most sarcastic tone possible), Triplette botched a huge call late in the first half. Derrick Johnson sacked Marcus Mariota, hitting him hard enough that the ball popped out before Mariota hit the ground. But, in a stunning display of ineptitude, Triplette (who was standing 10 yards behind the play) ruled Mariota’s forward progress had been stopped before the ball popped out. Only, Mariota never went forward to begin with – just backward once Johnson decleated him (watch here).

As such, the play was not reviewable, and the Titans got a field goal out of the aftermath, rather than Kansas City getting the ball back.

This wasn’t the only thing Triplette and his crew messed up, either. Bill Barnwell of ESPNchronicled the many mishaps the refs made, and it’s hardly surprising he promptly retired on Sunday morning in the wake of intense criticism.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not meaning to nitpic but it wasn’t 4th & 2 from the Carolina 31…..it ended up there after the Carolina defender intercepted the ball and selfishly cost his team about 16 yards…..the only reasons why players don’t simply bat the ball down on 4th down is….they want the INT….and that is purely selfish. That additional yardage didn’t cost Carolina the game but it could have.

  28. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I am no fan of NFL officiating and I think certain teams do get more breaks than others. But I’m not too concerned. We just need to become one of the “darling” teams. Pretty much gets back to Al Davis…”just win baby.” Everybody loves you then..even officials.

As bad as the NFL is the NHL sometimes gets even worse. The officials did everything they could in Detroit last night to help the Red Wings beat the Lightning including two 5-3 power plays for the Wings. Didn’t matter. The Lightning are so good right now that even the officials can’t stop them.

If I was a member of the Bucs front office I’d visit Jeff Vinik and learn all I could learn. Too bad the Bucs are not for sale and that the league wouldn’t let Vinik buy them. He’s an awesome owner and I have no doubt he’d improve the Bucs. And as much as I admire Steve Yzerman and John Cooper…it was Vinik who put it all together. He may be the best owner in all of professional sports right now.

you are a douche canoe ive never seen a supposed “bucs fan” spew so much troll doodoo and hate as you do reminds of this guy on the pewter report forum named “java” who used to pull the same sh*t you do why even post here? to get a rise out of people? well take a bow you have accomplished that but why continue to post here if you hate this current regime and its players? take a damn break you just look like a tool always posting hate rants especially with Gmac who would probably kick your schroney ass in real life!

get over it dude this is our team if you dont like it hit the road jackass until you feel we have the right pieces in place but just remember that makes you a fairweather fan which you basically already are because all you do is post BS comments mostly targeted at Gmac who is STILL one of the best DTs in the game sorry but true so get over it and kick rocks or deal with this regime and get bent slappy!

  30. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    I agree with BrianBuc…

Unfortunately it’s tough to get excited/hyped/encouraged by that last drive from Jameis bcuz he started the drive with what would’ve been an easy pick that was luckily dropped, but would be caught 9/10 times and then we would have lost again.

  31. DB55 Says:

We just need to become one of the “darling” teams.

I keep saying the glazers have not been paying their home owner association fees to goodell so we get no calls. Maybe if the glazers paid up like mr Kraft does it would be a different story.

Now as to owners, look no further than Eddie DeBartolo. Possibly the best nfl owner ever, lives in Tampa and is business partners with Mr. Derrick Brooks.

There’s our winning ownership group now if only the kids would sell.

  32. Rrsrq Says:

    Ohio,

Gamesmanship is all Cam was doing, he had to come out of the game, but knew his back up QB had to warm up a lttlle bit, that is why he stumbled. The rules are different for Cam, because of his size, err athleticism.

  33. Oxycondoms Says:

Actually I thought the opposite when funchess dropped
That td pass i thought to myself that should’ve been game over 2
    Weeks in a row

  34. Not there yet Says:

Yep because why wouldn’t a team in the playoffs flash back to a game against a team like the bucs. It should drive all teams in the playoffs to think what losing teams did to them

  35. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    DB55

Agree about DeBartolo and I’ve even read he has interest. Like you say…too bad the kids won’t sell.

  36. lambchop Says:

They mentioned this very thing during the broadcast of the game. It’s not ground breaking news. They said that the loss to the Bucs was a blessing because it allowed the coaches and players not to take the Panthers lightly even though the Saints beat the Panthers twice in the regular season.

Did anyone see Sean Payton dancing in the locker room after the game with a broom in his hand? Sweep. This guy is a scum bag. I hope the Bucs and Panthers trounce them next season. I like their team, I hate their arrogant coach.

  37. lambchop Says:

If it was Gruden in that post game coaches handshake, Jon Gruden would have asked Sean Payton if he should babysit Sean’s kids while he’s at it. Totally different reaction than Koetter. Actually, I don’t even think Payton would have the guts to try that with Jon.

Koetter needs to be more arrogant. But, I guess that’s hard at 5-11.
