Koetter: “I’d Like To Come To Hang Out With Them At Work One Day”

Dirk Koetter dreams of throwing darts at his critics

Many people confuse those who have thin skin with those who have thick skin but also are passionate about defending themselves.

There’s a difference.

Dirk Koetter falls into the latter category. So does Joe.

Call Joe misguided and idiotic all day long. No problem. But don’t call Joe thin-skinned for firing back a retort. That’s wrong.

Koetter shared his zest for defending himself during a recent chat with the Buccaneers Radio Network. Joe has no doubt Koetter holds back plenty of his dissatisfaction with fan and media criticism, but he will go there sometimes.

And if he could, Koetter would show up at your office water cooler, he said.

“You know, I’d love to come to everybody who doesn’t think I’m doing a good job, I’d like to come to hang out with them at work one day. Maybe I could criticize them,” Koetter said.

How cool would that be? Coach, you have an open invitation to JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters. Pizza and beer is on the house. Sadly, Koetter isn’t going show up this offseason because Joe thinks Koetter is “doing a good job.”

During this radio chat, Koetter’s broader conversation was about how time management (not game-clock management) is his greatest challenge. It’s rougher than being a college head coach, Koetter said.

To his critics, Koetter assured them they’ll have a better head coach in his sophomore season.

“I enjoyed it a lot and at the same time I learned a lot, and I’ll do better the second time around,” he said.

Koetter added that’s it’s too easy for fans to criticize playcalling from the stands: “I’m ok with it; it doesn’t mean I have to agree with it.”

Love Koetter…a few game decisions were baffling though…the onside kick in the new orleans game with 3 timeouts left and clock management in the Rams game when they finished the game on the Rams 15 with a timeout left…I think he needs to review some late game situations and what to do next time it happens

  2. Supersam Says:

Comes with the job I guess, I’m sure there are Patriot fans that after every season they don’t win the super bowl want Bill fired. Your doing good coach, keep us on the right path.

  3. Francisco Menendez Says:

Buccaneers were 3/6 against playoff teams this year, and only the Falcon loss on Thursday Night did not come down to the last possession. The lions on the other hand, as per PFT, made the playoffs without even one victory against a playoff team. I’d say Koetter is doing a fine job, and I’d invite the media to find someone else they think can do better. I’m thinking it might take them a hot second. Go Bucs, and God Bless Dirk.

  4. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Last line Agreed. Now go get that guy from FSU that will make running those toss plays fundamental.

  5. Clodhopper Says:

LOL Just like a bad comedian’s first come back.

“I dont go to where you work at McDonald’s and tell you what in a big mac, buddy!!”

Or when Seinfeld did that and the poor lady got her pinky toe cut off!! BOOOO HISSSS!!!

  6. JWBUCS Says:

The Great News here is that we gaining a gigantic boost over Lovie Smith, who in my humble opinion views that the NFL Game of Football has long passed by Lovie.

Koetter’s show of ability was demonstrated over the entire season and his selection of assistant coaching staff is Head and Shoulders above that of our previous coach, who seemed to pick his staff on the political buddy system, helping those who he wanted to receive a paycheck.

I really like Dirk’s brutal honesty with minimal avoidance of questions when he handles his Press conferences. And, I am satisfied, just like Dirk remarked, that his second year will show marked improvement.

  7. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And to my bros that I was in cahoots with lastnight about Pryor. I never said anything about his ability,I stated just like they spoke about on Undisputed yesterday his”suspect personality”. See his former team mate Brian Hartlines comments.

  8. 1sparkybuc Says:

The impression I get is Koetter is trusted, respected, and loved by his players and his staff. I believe in him, and I believe the Bucs will be contenders consistently with him. That’s all you can ask.

  9. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

    Especially you Blakester.

  10. yrbndr Says:

We are fortunate to have Koetter as the HC. People that blast his playcalling actually think they have a clue as to how to call an NFL game? That is naive and ridiculous… Let the man coach and enjoy the success of this team! Go Bucs!

  11. Rick in Ft. Myers Says:

Despite the carping by fans, pundits and reporters alike, Dirk Koetter’s “rookie” season as an NFL head coach was successful. Koetter guided the Bucs to a 9-7 record their first winning mark in six seasons and only their second in eight years.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

I am pretty sure that shot was for the “so called impartial reporter” that seems to like some coaches more than others that wrote “could Koetter be 1 and done”!!!!!

    Tampa2 mafia indeed!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!

    And Go JOEBUCSFAN!!!!!!!!!

  13. orlbucfan Says:

Dirk Koetter is building a Bucs offense that will rival our great defenses. The defense is beginning to blossom as is the ST. How many punts/KOs were run back on Bucs this year? Bryan Anger anyone? This Bucs team has the potential to be not just good, but scary good. SMHAW.

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I really really really like Koetter. We finally got a legit NFL coach (first one since Gruden).

Are you referencing the afternoon drive host on wdae? Do people still listen to that show?

  16. cmurda Says:

I would criticize Dirk just so he would come hang out with me at my office. You da man Dirk. Love that dude.

  17. Tampa Tony Says:

I like Dirk but this comes off as a bit thin skinned as no one pays hundreds of dollars weekly to see a Dr examine a patient or a truck driver to parallel park a 18 wheeler on a busy street. You get paid millions to win games not everyone will like all your decisions if you win enough they will shut up.

  18. pablo Says:

Pabli says the media and fans clearly get undrr Dirk,s skin than they ever did with Lovie. If you cant stand the heat of the tamale, don’t eat.

  19. DallasBuc Says:

    “So does Joe”, says Joe.
    Funny the way that works!

  20. DallasBuc Says:

I bet Licht thinks he’s a GM genius! I know his BFF and biz partner’s in the local media are thin skinned about the facts

  21. Bob in valrico Says:

never before has this team won games with key personnel missing in games.
credit both Gm and coaching staff. Also competition was better than reecent years.Dirk called the games necessary to hide our weakness at receiver and often O line play.

  22. Bob in valrico Says:

left out the players who collectively put out the effort this year.

  23. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    Dallas

Bro you’re losing it man. When you trashed Lovie from day one I disagreed.
When he turned out the horrible team against Tennessee I conceded you were right and I was wrong.

But now dude you can’t justify your criticisms. I’ll let other defend DK but this comment…

BFF and biz partner’s in the local media are thin skinned about the facts

That can only be taken as a shot at the Joe’s which is your right on this blog. On many other blogs your post would just get taken down.

I’ve NEVER had a post taken down here for disagreeing with Joe. I’ve never felt Joe was anything but fair in his relationships with his posters. He gives us all plenty of rope and of course there are always a few who wish to hang themselves.

This is Joe Buc FAN It’s not put out as a style sheet for objective journalism but a fan blog. And yet more than any other bloggers I’ve seen Joe does try to keep transparency and objectivity along with his opinion.

I just don’t know where you’re getting that criticism Realist.

  24. BKNYfootballhead Says:

Careful Pit, your comments may be moderated

  25. BringBucsBack Says:

Bob, ” receiver, o line ” and don’t forget the periodically emotionally out-of-control ( I’m bracing for the FSU / Jameis jock-hugging backlash) QB.

My only critique of the play calling was 1) too many runs up the middle 2) too many runs on 1st down 3) not enough short routes / quick release plays. That’s being picky. Koetter did a great job of situational play calling.

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

It will never be good enough for everybody ALL the time! Coach is NOT perfect and he never will be. He did a good job with the team this year and I look forward to seeing what’s in store for next year.
Don’t fall into the trap Stpete!

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, I don’t get it. Nothing will post. Happened the other day too. Am I in the doghouse again?

  28. DallasBuc Says:

StPete- I’m sure the Joe’s appreciate your aggressive aas kissing in general and at this moment in protection of their unassailable honor.
However, I can assure you once again you do not know what you are talking about. Be well StPete.

  29. mveal2006 Says:

the national news took this article and twisted it to imply Joe was beating on Coach dirk. Sorry to see it. I think its fair to believe in the future with these guys. im not thrilled with the owners sometimes, in fact if the nfl had kept the cross ownership rules, the bucs would have been better off, but the owners made a lot of money off of man u, and tampa is a weak market anyway so I guess it doesn’t matter. anyway, coach dirk would have plenty to pick at if he followed me around one day!

and joe needs to understand the games is about wins, and is good as jameous is, tebow won more. never understood the anti tebow bias. must be a fear of injury, or bizarre politics I fear, it certainly wasn’t the on field bottom line results

  30. Joe Says:

Joe, I don’t get it. Nothing will post. Happened the other day too. Am I in the doghouse again?

Not sure what you are referring to. You are a long-time commenter. You understand Joe has a spam filter. Perhaps you are using a naughty word? Perhaps you are using some HMTL code? Perhaps you are using some strange punctuation?

Joe’s written this dozens of times before, surely you have read the explanations?

  31. Joe Says:

However, I can assure you once again you do not know what you are talking about. Be well StPete.

Not sure what the hell you are getting at but are you just p!ssed you can’t free beer?

Might want to explain to folks why Joe had to put you in the cooler for a few weeks since you are such an honorable human being.

  32. Joe Says:

the national news took this article and twisted it to imply Joe was beating on Coach dirk

    Where?

  33. cmurda Says:

Joe, remember that day that I brought Rachel Watson over to your house just to rub it in that I was dating her. I can’t believe you didn’t ban me.

Okay, okay that never happened but I dreamed it a few times. It would be well worth the possible ban.

  34. Joe Says:

    cmurda:

    She’s married.

  35. DallasBuc Says:

“Might want to explain to folks why Joe had to put you in the cooler for a few weeks since you are such an honorable human being.”

I have been hoping you would tell me that since to my knowledge I did not break any known rules. Feel like I have heeded all the known rules and still can’t seem to help from getting my comments frequently striked and routine admonition. I have always been fine with this being your rules on your site. Respect that as long as when I am breaking a rule I am allowed to be aware of that. I think publicizing the rules is the honorable thing to do, don’t you?

  36. DallasBuc Says:

“Not sure what the hell you are getting at but are you just p!ssed you can’t free beer?”

    Can’t what with free beer?

  37. cmurda Says:

I know Joe. I’m kidding even about the dreamed it part. I’m married too.

  38. RustyRhinos Says:

Anytime! Coach Kotter. That you want to go out and land survey. I will be the there to pick you up at the ATL airport. Yeah we will have to go by your former place of employment as we go to my neck of the woods but it will be fun. Come on out we will have a great day.

I think Our entire coaching staff is doing their jobs, to coach players up that are in front of them, who play within our game plans. And be successful in the system. It appears to me that it take some time to adjust to the Head Coaching job. I think Coach Kotter is getting better across many different areas of coaching that he has not had to deal with in the NFL/College. I also believe that Coach Kotter will improve his coaching limitations to the best of his abilities. Next season we will see the updated version of Coach Kotter’s Head Coaching skills, and the season after that we will see other improvements too. Coach Kotter to me does not look like or sound like a person who will not seek out and improve their abilities and skills in his profession. I like the Coaching we have now in place here in Tampa. Yes we will have some changes always do in the NFL.

    Go! Bucs!
