The Big Dog

It was time again for Joe to engage in deep football talk with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620.

Excitement and discord were in the air for the popular JoeBucsFan.com Hour.

Enjoy.

Joe, I recognize that you think the Redskins are hot garbage, but this game has me even more concerned than the Titans game did. And it all comes down to Jameis, and how well he performs.

People may not like stats, but they do usually show trends. In the 2 Bucs wins, Jameis averaged 14 completions out of 20 passes thrown for an average 208 yds/game and ZERO INTs per game. Bucs rushed an average of 38 times each game. Our average time-of-possession was 31:31 .

In the 3 Bucs losses, Jameis averaged 20 completions out of 37 passes thrown for an average 253 yds/game and 2 INTs average per game. Bucs rushed an average of 25 times each game. Our average time-of-possession was 28:21 .

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that falling behind (for whatever reason) and putting the pressure on Jameis to bring us back via the pass isn’t an optimal strategy. Putting the pressure on ANY rookie QB to do that isn’t a real good strategy. Looks to me like 35 or so rushes per game … if the rush is working … balanced out with 20 or so passes per game gives the Bucs the best chance to win at this point.

As Jameis gains experience that’ll change I’m sure, but let’s not get the cart before the horse. Bucs need to go with their strengths, and right now that favors the running game with a complimenting short-intermediate passing game. I just hope the Bucs don’t try to expect too much out of Jameis too fast.

    @Defense Rules:

    Very nice post!
Last week, Peyton Manning was 26 of 48 for 290 yards with 1 TD and 3 INTs.
Yet, the Broncos won in spite of his performance.
Last week, Andrew Luck was 30 of 50 for 312 yards with 3 TDs and 0 Ints.
Yet, the Colts lost despite his performance.

It is at least a little bit ironic to me, that Jameis and the Bucs have won two games when he has been an effective “game manager”, but have lost other games (Tenn,Car) when they were not good enough to overcome his performance. It is still a team game, and quite often …… defense rules.

The Redskins have a tendency to start strong. The Bucs have to somehow stop Captain Kirk Cousins from getting his confidence back and doing what all career back-up QB do to the Bucs..play the best game of their of their lives. The worst that can happen is another pick 6 by Jameis but..wait a minute..were not at home, will not happen. Give them a taste of our “pit bulls”.. Doug Martin and Charles Sims. The best one two punch in this league. Gerold McCoy is going to go on a rampage with the way their center is playing. Yea baby..4th ranked defense is coming to DC!

I love that picture of Buddy Hackett. I’m happy to know he has an afternoon sports talk show.

  14. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Why do the Joes keeps going on a show where the host thinks their a pair of morons lol. It’s getting wired. The Joes need to go after that Big Dork and stop taking it in the rear every show. He’s not going to stop having you on the show, he gets great ratings because your the only good thing about is show most of the time.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Wyoming…because to them that show is everything and it advertises for their site. So they take the beatings and say please sir may I have another. Hell they’ll even defend him to the end if need be. Been there done that, seen it been done with others as well.

Joe – I really enjoyed your conversation with Steve Duemig. The offensive line has exceeded expectations. People are quick to forget all the issues that faced this offense last year due to its ineffectiveness. The horrendous play of Anthony Collins, Oneil Cousins, Patrick Omameh and Garrett Gilkey. Joe keeps his full press on Evan Smith not replacing Joe Hawley when the bigger story is why Tim Jennings is not replaced by Alterraun Verner? Demar Dotson should replace Gosder Cheilus because he is a way better RT. Yes, we can run on Washington. Steve Duemig stated that Doug Martin will not run for more than 100 yards? The Redskins defense allowed Devonta Freeman to rush for 153 yards and Chris Ivory ran for 146 yards while he added another 50 in receiving. Martin is a better RB and will get 100+. The Redskin defense blitzed 12 times last week and I am sure will probably blitz 20 times against Winston. Kirk Cousins was pressured 16 times, which was key to his poor performance. GMC should go off on their center Josh LeRibeus. The Bucs need to win this game.
