Lovie Smith: Liked Everything He Said

April 20th, 2015

lovie 0912Color Lovie Smith 100 percent impressed by one of his players — on the field and off.

The head coach moved all-in this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

Battling flu-like symptoms and media foaming at the mouth to talk about Jameis Winston, Joe asked Lovie about newcomer defensive end George Johnson.

Lovie said the film don’t lie.

“Went back and looked at a lot of our video when we played the Detroit Lions this past year. George was impressive, to say the least,” Lovie said. “You know, I’ve talked a lot about our defensive line and what we need to have on the defensive line. And then we brought him in to visit with him talk to him face-to-face, man-to-man. Liked everything he said. You know, sometimes some players are kind of Tampa Bay Buccaneers and you just kinda hate that they ever left. I definitely say that’s the case with George. I know he’s excited. We have a role for him and can’t wait to get him on the field.”

That’s a very strong endorsement for the six-sacks rotational edge rusher, a former bottom-of-the-roster Buccaneer.

Joe’s drinking the Kool-Aid, Johnson has to be a huge upgrade from Michael Johnson.

It’s hard not to be an upgrade from a guy famous for standing on the sideline.

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

I feel like there’s something to be said for a team having identified a useful way to use Johnson’s skills. They didn’t know how to do it effectively his first time around in Tampa, but now that they have the answers to the test, they should be able to figure out a way to incorporate that in to the game plan.

Joe I’m 6 foot and a 180 pounds. I would be a huge upgrade over the Ghost.

  4. BuccaneEric Says:

Sounds like we might not be drafting a DE with a high round pick. Unless the role they have for him is a backup role.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

I bet he is an even huge upgrade over Adrian Clayborn who stunk up the D-line for 4 years!!!

  6. Joe Gruden Says:

Buc1987 I didn’t know they stacked shnit that high!

I’d be very, very careful when evaluating any player’s performance against the Bucs…..it seems we bring out career days from our opponents.

Has anyone watched other team’s highlights or great plays featured on commercials etc?……the Bucs usually are in those videos…..in a bad way!!!

You should post the comments about Michael Johnson for comparison. I’d imagine they read strikingly similar.

Joe Gruden….I can see why you are often lost in thought….it’s an unfamiliar territory.

  11. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Yeah …he was impressive against the Bucs OL……yawn…..
kind of like Rich McKay impressed with Bert Emmanuel ..because he torched the Bucs the previous year…yawn….

Say Joe..I got the glass of kool aid poured but I ain’t drinkin just yet. Not one drop until the 1st regular season game is in the books. Because lets keep it real here..If Lovie and Licht don’t do at least 8-8 this year? They both will be trading war stories off of the Tampa Bay bridge with Schiano!!

  13. Mike10 Says:

Put down that kool-aid Joe, it’ll mess your mind mannnn.
Listen, an upgrade over Johnson says about as must as an upgrade from Collins, anyone that’s paid millions to sit the bench.

And can anyone exactly explain to me what a Buccaneer man is anymore? Per Lovie, everytime he brings someone in, it proves to be someone that comes here, gets overpaid, and turns into a bust.

OR, is it someone that leaves here after a 2+ year reign, and succeeds elsewhere?

There’s a lot of “Buccaneer men!”
