Jameis Watch: NIKE Signs Jameis

April 17th, 2015

jameis 1215Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Joe knows there are many haters who want to club burgeoning star quarterback Jameis Winston to death. Joe just doesn’t get this in any way shape or form, unless they don’t like how he is brash and confident.

How did a humble guys like Josh McCown and Josh Freeman work out, huh?

Many think Winston will put a pall on the Bucs franchise, like being the laughingstock of the NFL hasn’t done that already.

One of the largest companies in the world, which does tons of research, believes Winston is just the opposite. Darren Rovell of BSPN brings word that global giant NIKE and Phil Knight have signed Winston to market their gear.

IF Winston was the felon some want you to think he is, you think NIKE would touch the guy with a 10-foot pole? Of course not. Mega companies do their research, unlike your standard drunk in the bar.

Good for him. I hope he puts Superman’s cape back in the closet and turns ICE into water on Sundays.

Ref Cam Newton and Matt Ryan for those that need the flash cards (Mariota Fans)

Huh? How about a duh for you Joe.

How did humble guys like Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson work out? Huh?

And we all know what loudmouth arrogant aholes both the Mannings are.

And we see Aaron Rodgers shooting off his mouth just as frequently as FAMEIS don’t we! Huh indeed!!!!

  4. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Jameis is a felon = FACT!

  5. Jimbo Says:

Nike also had Michael Vick as the poster boy for their NFL products and Tiger Woods as the face of golf. They aren’t worried about doing their research. If an athlete self destructs, they will just move on to the next one or stay quiet until the issue with the athlete blows over.

  6. robert 9 Says:

    he’s in good company

PORTLAND, Ore. – It’s the corporate pride of Oregon, but Nike doesn’t seem to flinch when it takes heat for sticking with athletes in trouble.

For the first time, a study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University measured, in terms of money, what’s likely driving Nike to make business decisions that aren’t based on moral grounds.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s third Super Bowl came in the same season he was suspended for four games after being accused of sexually assaulting a college student. But Nike stuck by him.

And the company never turned its back on the Lakers Kobe Bryant when he was accused of rape.

The company also kept golfer Tiger Woods even after he cheated on his wife, but Gillette Razors dropped him and so did AT&T.

  7. Buc53 Says:

I love you calling it like it is, Joe. I am so sick of the random hatred. This KID has been cleared in every investigation. He has been condemned for something he wasn’t even arrested for.

People would rather believe him a rapist in spite of all of the evidence to the contrary, just because he played for a team they don’t like.

This will be studied in Mass Comm classes for years—any body want to wager a guess why Mettenberger, who pled guilty to sexual assault, was drafted with zero moral outrage, while Winston has been publicly flogged and condemned when he wasn’t even arrested?

Sure seems like a racial divide in this “supposed” post-racial America.

  8. robert 9 Says:

has nothing to do with “their research”….they just don’t give a damn.

  9. bucs4lyfe Says:

    Winston haters……your the minority=FACT

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Again. Check out the comments. Check out the vitriol on BOTH sides of the Fameis decision. He’s really going to bring the fan base together!!!

  11. Jimbo Says:

    @Robert 9 I second that

Maybe Joe should have done HIS research on this one

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    Just Do It.

    Just Win!

    Well deserved Jameis. Well deserved.

  13. port richey george Says:

a lot of coverage on espn tv today about Winston both on nfl insider and outside the lines. on outside the lines they did a very detailed analysis of him.
15 windows shot out at FSU with a gun and he was questioned about it.
standing on a table in the FSU cafeteria yelling stuff one game suspension.
showed video of him walking all through the grocery and out the front door with the package of crabs. yelling at the coach on the sidelines.
they had 2 psychiatrists discussing what they thought of him.

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    bucs4lyfe

You may be correct about the minority on this board. But I’d bet you a dollar to a donut you’re dead wrong in the community at large.

If I had a nickel for every person who told me they can’t believe the Bucs would even “consider” drafting Fameis I’d be as wealthy as Fameis is going to be.

And my experience has been with men hard to imagine he’s going to go over big time with the ladies.

  15. Mariota Joe Says:

Not a “hater”…..just an astute observer of FACTS. And let there be no doubt…any marketing agreement with JW WILL have clauses relating to off field actions and missteps, and also relating to the outcome of the civil case(s).

  16. WS99 Says:

    Rob9

You see the common denominator? They are all champions. Interesting, hmm.

Why haven’t/didn’t they sign Mariota, does he work for Nike? I thought Oregon was owned by the Nike CEO. Where’s the love?

  17. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

I’d love to read the “Morales” clause

  18. tmaxcon Says:

Nike signing him so close to the civil suit announcement is just further proof that her civil suit means nothing. If her suit mattered they would have delayed deal or at least the announcement. Welcome to Jameis you will make the team and city instantly better.

  19. mike30#1bucfan Says:

Dang it, I was just about to post that!!!! LOL

  24. Clodhopper Says:

Did EK know this yesterday? Would help explain the floozy’s timing.

  25. ADown Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

Ok, well that obviously you. I mean, you are the same guy on here every day bashing Jameis, so it would make sense that people you hang out with would share the same ideas. ALL of my friends and family cant wait for Jameis to arrive, and I have a very large family. When I talk to people around my workplace, same thing, excitement.

  26. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

lol imagine tampa and this losing franchise being the center of the football universe. come on really? I just don’t get how people think they know so much about football and marketing and PR….what are you all doing here on this site you should be out getting your millions. obviously nothing is affected by what he’s done so far. you don’t get knocked for allegedly doing something. his marketability is only affected by future mistakes. do we really need to get into how many athletes have paid off people to make things go away and went on with their lives? you can get away with striking a cab driver so easy in florida

  27. Gail Mulert Says:

Fact.. Winston is NOT a felon..

  28. Buc1987 Says:

ADown…I keep telling you StPeteBucsFan’s on board with Winston.

    It’s all good man.

I’ve been told in the past that I’m the most sarcastic person on the planet….

  29. Icantstanditanymore Says:

When I see the “hate” comments on both sides of the fence, I think of the saying: What you see depends on where you sit. If you bring your prejudices to the table, you can’t expect to have an unemotional, unbiased, and reasoned discussion. Cooler heads than those on this site will prevail come Draft Day because the decision-makers are running a business.

Jameis is a felon = FACT!
    ——————————————————————————————–
A FELON IS SOMEONE CONVICTED OF A FELONY YOU REALIZE THAT RIGHT?

  32. ADown Says:

    @Buc1987

It seemed like the tides were changing and almost everyone understood that Jameis would be the guy, and were becoming to like and understand him.

Then this civil suit, which everyone knew was coming (including the Bucs), gets filed and everyone seems to go nuts again. IT IS THE SAME WOMAN. IT IS THE SAME CASE. This suit has changed absolutely nothing, and people are acting like he just raped another girl last week. Pathetic.

  33. Mariota>Winston Says:

Go look at the number of athletes with criminal records that are Nike endorsed. Enough said…this means nothing. Nike only drops them if the media is riding the issue like a horse. aka Lance, Kobe, Vick, Marion, Woods, Paterno…..long list…

MM #1 pick of the Bucs!

  34. I Get It Says:

I get it! Nike only signs FELONS and RAPISTS!

  35. ADown Says:

I should qualify my last statement, *allegedly raped another woman last week.

  36. INDYbucsfan Says:

If/when we draft him, and if/ when we start winning , I really do not want to read comments from the regular Winston bashers anymore.

Nike signed Mariota. (Sometimes this is too easy.)

  39. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

I will read the Jameis articles because I like them & think that Winston is the man. But I will stay far away from debates so I’ll comment with “I’m out, peace”.

  40. DieHard_Bob Says:

Nike swung and missed on Ray Rice, Michael Vick, Lance Armstrong, sprinter Oscar Pistorius, Track and field star Marion Jones and sprinter Justin Gatlin. Just because Nike signs someone it doesn’t prove anything one way or the other.

  41. Keepitreal Says:

You guys are rediculous…when we draft winston ray jay will be SOLD OUT!!! If you think not because of a few knuckleheads on this site don’t like him your kidding yourself. We don’t need you, Corp accounts will go through the roof. Don’t think so, you can watch from you TV. Done deal…good riddance!

  42. Keepitreal Says:

Not much longer guys and we won’t be seeing Robert9, subparsam, stpete and the rest. Well we might but they will have changed their scree name….lmao

  43. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Adown

“and people are acting like he just raped another girl last week. Pathetic.”

Perhaps some are. Many aren’t. Some are just beginning to realize the publicity challenge that goes along with Fameis.

For some reason it doesn’t seem permissable with some on this board…especially 87 for folks to doubt Fameis or raise legitimate questions about his behavior.

I very quickly moved past the rape allegations because NONE of us were there, NOBODY really knows for sure what happened. Fameis is innocent until proven guilty. All the other crap, most notably being so incredibly arrogant and self absorbed to scream out FHITHP in front of other women at exactly the same time he was being investigated for “rape allegations”. That was hard for me to get past.

But the constant onslaught from the Joes and others here convinced me I should look past it. In addition I bought into the meme that Fameis was simply that much better than MM.

After Grudens comments which basically echoed my original thoughts I am now back on the MM bandwagon. 87 who is so in bed with Fameis he can no longer think straight will wish to say I never supported the Fameis pick but that’s simply not true.

I now view MM and JW as talented prospects. Gruden made my original point that the NFL game is coming towards the kind of talent MM displays and so I’ve changed my mind yet again.

The suit itself doesn’t push me to MM but I certainly concede the bad publicity attendant to it is an influence. If both QB’s are actually close in talent then it’s only wise to go with the one without baggage. Again I think this draft could be like the Flacco/Ryan draft where two good QB’s emerge. If both can do the job why would you take the one with all the controversy?

  44. Mariota>Winston Says:

    1987 and Adown…

If you want to give a personal pass to a person with serious character issues at a minimum to a person behaving in a felonious manner; that is your business not mine. We are not talking about one instance either… I wont go over all the character events…..the one that gets me the most is not OFF the football field but ON the football field when this talented but certainly entitled QB dressed for a Clemson game when Jimbo told him flat out you are not playing. To me, this shows clearly he has some issues with authority and at a minimum has issues with right and wrong or accountability in general. I wish him the best of luck on someone else’s team.

The Bucs have had enough of of the Talibs, D Jacks, B Thomas types..who simply think they are above the law or society because they play a game on Sunday.

  45. Jordan Says:

Well you’ll still read criticism INDYBucsfan because some things are bigger than winning a football game. In my opinion, Winston the QB appears beautiful. In my opinion, Winston the person appears ugly.

And as far as organizations not getting behind players they haven’t fully vetted and cleared…Rolando McClain anyone? I’ve lost count of the dude’s arrests whom just signed with the Patriots, arguably the league’s most successful franchise.

  46. Tiny Tim Says:

Where are the idiots that say they will not renew season tickets or they will no longer go to the games or support the team if Jameis is drafted by the bucs? Do they believe there will be women protesting outside the Nike headquarters? Will these same losers stop buying Nike products now? Or are they hypocrites? That is what I thought………hypocrites.

  47. BucFan Says:

Nike signed winsont mariota gordan and cooper.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2434322-jameis-winston-marcus-mariota-melvin-gordon-amari-cooper-sign-deals-with-nike

  48. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Keepitreal

I’ll be here under my same name and you can make as much fun as you wish.
And if we draft him I hope you are able to make fun and I hope he succeeds at the level many here believe he will.

I haven’t called Fameis a rapist or any derogatory names. i have disagreed with some here on the impact of his reputation and his ability versus that of MM.

Unlike posters like Keepitreal I haven’t gone on the record about any certainty because I simply do not believe anybody here is clairvoyant. To post in such absolutes simply amuses me.

Mostly what I have done is to simply raise questions and present both sides of the issue. I’ve defended Fameis where appropriate…EG the point shaving crap seemed to be piling on to me and again nobody was there that night and so he deserves the presumption of innocence.

But trust me I won’t change my screen name.

  49. Pickgrin Says:

8:10 on April 30th cannot get here soon enough. I am so sick of all this anti-Winston vitriol.

Mariota backers seem somehow convinced that if they just spew enough venom Winston’s way – that the Bucs will be influenced and pick Mariota.

It ain’t gonna work. Winston will be the Bucs QB and all any of you Jameis haters are doing is talking bad about the QB who will help turn this franchise into a winner.

I hope most of you leave and never come back to JBF after the draft. It’s more likely though that there will just be a ton of “New” commenter names around here post draft.

  50. BucNation99 Says:

Hey Joe will you remove the Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering intro you give jameis if the bucs draft him?

  51. WS99 Says:

I’m learning that if you can ball out of control you are usually not a saint. Let’s not forget Peyton rubbed his nuts on a girls face. Wilson is bagging a Instagram hoe and Andrew luck just give him time. Brady has his issue too with yelling at OCs, refs and teammates.

I think the only baller that’s squeky clean is Eli. Go figure.

  52. tmaxcon Says:

    Mariota>Winston

you are entitled to your opinion obviously but let me ask this, how is that choir boy team of Lovie’s doing in the win loss column….

if a team, coach or city can’t deal with all different types of personalities good and bad it will fail. it’s not a perfect world. no one deserves a career death sentence based on, over blown media coverage and false allegations.

I hope you hold everyone to the same standard and no one in your family has to defend themselves against false information.

Winston has gone from accused to victim during the course of this event. I am glad Nike did the right thing and sign the bucs first franchise qb.

  53. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Somebody is using the Patriots as a barometer of a team to emulate. Really?

They selected a freaking murderer despite ALL THE RED FLAGS! Everybody knew Hernandez was a despicable person. Urban Meyer knew it as well.

Do all of you feel that Super Bowls and National Championships are worth signing violent felons?

BTW this is not about Fameis…there is NO comparison to what Fameis did in college and what Hernandez did. This is simply about the approach to building a football team. Kraft and Belicheat are the thugs. They are the enablers who knew better yet still signed Hernandez because to them winning is the ONLY thing that matters. I know that’s also true for some of you. OK we can simply agree to disagree. I would love to cheer for a team with some class.

  54. Keepitreal Says:

@mariota…. What a joke.. Nb gun, soda in ketchup cup…. Let’s lock him away for life. Dallas, New England, Pittsburg, NY would not hesitate signing this guy. You guys need to go back to the woods, you have no clue! I’m originally from NY and the army a bunch of church going ladies in the knitting club Pu$$ys like some of the clowns on here. All high and mighty, glad the few of you never did anything wrong at 19 or 20. You want greatness grow some balls and take a swing. You few make this town look like a total joke. Go watch icecapades or gymnastics. We won’t miss you!!!! Clowns

  55. Capt.Tim Says:

Jameis is a felon? Really, gator boy- wanna produce those court documents?
Don’t think he’s been arrested. Or gotten a DUI. Or any rumors of Drugs.

    Nothing.

Only crime around here is defamation of character.
He ordered a water, but got a soda.
    Really?
If he isn’t famous Jameis- does anyone really call the cops over this?
It’s all overblown dumb kid stuff- with a gold mining chick throw in for a little drama.

Did any of you get thru college as cleanly as he did. None of you were cash strapped?

The kid is a phenom. A once in a decade Talent. And some of you idiots wanna miss out on him- over a soda, 30 bucks in crab legs, shooting pellet guns, inappropriate chanting, and a chick who won’t let go of her version of a brass ring.
I had more offenses in my first month.
If you ever have an celebrity or money( worse, both), chicks like that are EVERYWHERE!! He was just to new to celebrity- to know that.
    Once bitten- twice shy.

Welcome to Tampa, Mr. Winston. You are very welcome

Ignore the brain dead. They have never been Wealthy/Famous/ celebrity.
They have no idea what a successful persons life is like- or the many pitfalls.

And they never will. Just bitterly on the outside looking in

  56. OAR Says:

One way or another some Bucs fans here are going to be eating a lot of crow! I think I’m going to open a crow eatery. Crow is the fruit of the air. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Thers’s uh, crow-kabobs, crow creole, crow gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple crow, lemon crow, coconut crow, pepper crow, crow soup, crow stew, crow salad, crow and potatoes, crow burger, crow sandwich. That- that’s about it.
    Taking orders April 30th!

  57. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Jameis IS A FELON! LOOK IT UP!

  58. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    WS99

Wilson is banging and instragram hoe. Really? That’s what you have against Wilson his choice of companions. You could have added he also got a divorce.

Aaron Rodgers is banging Olivia Munn is that permissable. What has he done?

And Andrew Luck is just waiting to blow up. In your rush to minimize any transgressions Jameis may have committed you guys are really becoming cynical.

What next? Jordan Speith had an affair with his caddie? GMac is beating his child? Levonte beats up cab drivers? Do you all really believe that you have to be a jerk to be a great athlete. I’m not talking about Fameis now I mean in general.

I concede that the NFL has a lot of unsavory characters. But there are lots of great players who are also good guys. I don’t recall Darrelle Revis getting into lots of trouble here or even in the media capital of the world NYC.

  59. ADown Says:

    @Curtis Gatorboy

How about you just post the link… and shut up. He has one citation and no charges. Not even misdemeanors, let alone felonies.

  60. Keepitreal Says:

Curtis he is not a felon… Get your facts straight before you talk.

  61. StPeteBucsFan Says:

the army a bunch of church going ladies in the knitting club Pu$$ys like some of the clowns on here.

  62. ADown Says:

    @Mariota>Winston

His uniform was hanging up in the locker, so he put it on. I was watching BSPN or NFL Network (forget which one) and they had about 5 or 6 different ex players on there saying that they would have done the exact same thing Jameis did. If your uniform is in your locker, you put it on. Not a single one said they would have done otherwise.

  63. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Jameis IS A FELON! LOOK IT UP!”

You are embarrassing competent Gators everywhere. Please look up the definition of Felon in a dictionary. You are making yourself look foolish.

  64. ColoradoBuc Says:

“Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University” – I notice that the Joe’s have been very selective in their characterization of Mr. Winston prefacing each article about him. Maybe some of the posters here should be as selective in their remarks.

  65. Mariota>Winston Says:

Jimbo knows JW is not a good person too but he cant say it….yet. Rape on college campuses is out of control compounded by a victim report rate of 40%. I think that is something that cannot be denied.

    tmax-
Let me reverse your statement and ask u the same question….show me all the SB winning teams with a QB who had as many (multiple more than one instance) red flags as JW coming out of college and how many SB did they win?

The second thing you need to strongly consider is that this is not the old NFL where the athlete get away with everything. Those days are over. The new NFL is about character whether u like it or not hence the new CBA/NFLPA rules. This is the biggest issue most of the JW supporters miss.

  66. Clodhopper Says:

Oh yeah. Why would we want to emulate a team that has won every division championship except one for over a decade? And how many SBs? 4 in 15 years? Yeah that’s a dumb idea.

  67. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Time for some levity. This blog is mild compared to the political blog I attend.

One dude from Cleveland got so incensed with me he asked where I lived in St. Pete so he could come down and settle things like a MAN. LOL

I had to explain to him that I live in Florida and that after that post I could meet him at the plane and “stand my ground” with my .45.

I hope most of you get me. I enjoy this and have fun watching people take pixels on a screen and opinions so seriously.

Here’s a tip though from Ralph Waldo Emerson. I never allow the thoughts of others affect how I feel.

If anything I’ve posted makes you feel upset or unhappy sorry to say that is on you not me. I’m simply the doubting Thomas in any crowd, Love to ask questions but mostly I love making people think,

  68. #1OverallPick Says:

@ ROBERT 9 and@ Jimbo you guys are just as worst as Erica Kinsman get your facts straight. Example #1( Nike vs. Mike Vick) Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in a dogfighting ring. Example #2 Nike vs. He has been with Nike since turning pro in 1996, when he signed a five-year deal for a reported $40 million before his rampant infedelity spree. Both guys were signed before their bad acts.

  69. ADown Says:

    @Mariota>Winston

Jameis has never had a history of drugs/alcohol, nor has he had any issues with violence. Those are what the NFL is cracking down on. I never hear any petty theft stories in the NFL, because they all have money… and whether you like it or not, he will NEVER be in any legal trouble for being falsely accused of rape.

Honestly, I think Jameis understands that he has made some stupid mistakes, has admitted them, and is now moving forward with his life. I truly have no concern for Winston’s behavior moving forward, and neither do the Bucs.

  70. Jeagan1999 Says:

I worked for NIKE for a few years and they sign winners. Winston has shown he can win….however, it’s not like NIKE hasn’t been burned a few times in the past. They came very close to dropping Tiger (if he didn’t have his own line within the NIKE brand, I think they would have). Lance Armstrong was one of the biggest name athletes they dropped…he used to have a building on campus (Nike’s HQs) in Beaverton named after him, but I believe they renamed it. They also renamed a building that had been named after former Penn St. Coach Joe Paterno, after the Sandusky scandal broke. The point is, Winston will have to keep his nose clean or NIKE will drop him. Mariota is a natural for NIKE…I think Phil Knight is one of the largest contributors to the Oregon program.

  71. Barry Says:

    I am a hater. I hate men who rape women, allegedly. #AccusedRapist #CivilRapeTrial #ExtremelyBadCharacter #Thief

    #DP #HGH #PEDs #BrainDeadRetard

  72. MarshallU Says:

It’s a good thing now that Winston will have that Nike money to pay off all of his future Rape victims

  73. tmaxcon Says:

    Mariota>Winston

Brady Left his pregnant girlfriend for a super model. not criminal but with the holier than thou standards set here that’s pretty crappy

as far as superbowl winning qbs with more red flags here is two for you with 3 sb wins

Big Ben and Peyton Manning both have paid off victims in the past in some cases multiple times. I believe Manning’s preferred move was the “T-Bag”

The NFL is about wins if the bucs win all will be forgotten the attention span of people in this country is very very short. i respect the high standards you have set although I think they are a little unrealistic in today’s society.

  74. Jordan Says:

Lost in translation Stpetebucsfan…i do NOT believe we should emulate the Pats or any organization willing to look past major character flaws for the sake of winning. I believe the line has to be drawn somewhere. On the field, I’d take Winston over Mariota. But I wouldn’t hire the former because of his repeated displays of poor judgment which to me are evidence of a sense of entitlement and a belief in no consequences. That may have changed since his suspension but there are still too many question marks for me surrounding the alleged rape (and I’ve read many articles on both sides). And it’s not about fear of him doing something else…it’s about not wanting that personality representing my team.

Darren Sharper was a great player with high intelligence and loads of charisma. That’s not a guy I’d want playing for me.

So far as Nike, who cares? They’d fire him if he did something wrong, and he isn’t the only one to sign a deal with them.

In under 2 weeks, we will finally find out. Personally, I will support anyone the Bucs use that pick on. Winston. Mariota. Williams. Whoever.

Think of the world we live in… I’m just curious what more does marriota have to do to prove he’s the better choice. It’s sad that again men of high morals and character seem to come in second in our society. It is so hard for me to coach high schoolers today and tell them to emulate the character of marriota when they see the Winston’s of the world not only being picked on top but hearing adults make excuses to justify deviant behavior. Tampa needs more Derrick Brooks, more Warrick Dunns. We need stability not a media circus. Everyone is waiting for Winston to do something silly again and now the bucs will be attached to him, just like FSU and I’m sorry but as much as I love FSU, like jameis and truly know he can ball- there is no way on God’s green earth I would make him the face of my franchise over another capable player like marriota. They are both talented bright, have high fb iqs but the one thing that separates them the most is the display of their character and frankly that’s not even close in comparison.

I personally think that this Winston debate is way overblown because 1 of 3 things will happen.
#1 – Winston will come here, grow up and be a model citizen and actually be the franchise QB
#2 – Winston will come here, continue being a dumbsh$t and be gone in 3 years taking Lovie and Licht with him.
#3 – Winston will come here, not be a distraction but suck on the field being highly overrated. Will be gone in 3 years taking Lovie and Licht with him.
Either way, everything will be fine so everybody just chill

  97. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Okay…let’s play devils advocate (not that most of you do not do that already). Let’s assume for a moment that they do not take Winston, but instead go for DE and decide to take a QB in round 2.

Well, those people are called fair weather fans and they only show up when we are winning.

As soon as Winston is drafted, the prospect of good times at Ray Jay will bring all those fans back. The beer will flow, concessions will increase, bikini babes in the stands will be back flaunting all they have.

And, amid all the loud cheers of joy and excitement on Sundays in Tampa we will no longer be able to hears the crying of haters. All will be forgotten and maybe, just maybe all the haters will forget to hate and just enjoy being a Bucs fan for a change.

First off nice to meet you sir. Secondly I must disagree with the statement that most Winston haters are Gators fans. I live in Montana, pretty good ways away from Gainesville, and I have yet to find a football fan up here that likes him. My wife is a FSU alum and she said he creeps her out. This poll from ESPN backs this up. http://espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=nfl&pollId=4657212
Personally, my worries about the kid have pretty much vanished. My largest concern with him Ever was shouting the obscenities in public while under investigation. To me it showed ignorance. Ignorance does not equal stupidity though. I also was worried about his sense of entitlement but Ive never been in his shoes so I imagine that is really hard for a young man to get a handle on. As I have said many times, JW will be the most investigated athlete Ever and if he passes that then I am T-Totally ok with him as our QB. My hatred for the Seminoles is only for 12 or 13 Saturdays a week and even then I have to keep it in check as my wife and I are The House Divided

  168. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Jameis is going to be humbled next year to say the least….the WHOLE NFL defensive side of the ball is licking their collective chops game planning for the rookie QB….

  169. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow just wow!!! Have any of you read this weeks Sports Illustrated? Now I realize I’ve been had by this site. Just as the Joe’s went bonkers over Johnny Football they’ve led us down the path with Fameis. Not that Fameis won’t be better than Johnny Football..that’s easy.

But this blog had me believing that Fameis was a shoe in as the top pick. We are obviously in FSU land and the national press simply does not agree!!!

We have been fed such a one sided Fameis barrage that it even had me wondering about Mariota, That’s not the opinion of plenty who are in the know including a coach who worked them both in preparation for the Combine.

Everybody in the SI piece agreed that MM has far more upside and is actually the prototypical QB of the future.

Carson Palmer and Russell Wilson who worked with speed coach Ryan Flaherty both thought Mariota will excel in the NFL and that he will quickly pick up the huddle and the few times he’ll be expected to take a snap from under center.
Wilson pointed out he was under center about 50% of the time..and Palmer agreed saying the game is changing.

But perhaps the most telling nugget that came from S.I’s reporting…Mariota got on great with Licht but the real nugget was from Koetter who is expected to install a fast paced up tempo system which would be squarely in Mariota’s wheelhouse. At one point Koetter is reported to have told Mariota, “You’re gonna have no problem learning this system when you come back”.

So after a month of reading JBF I was certain Winston was the pick….after reading Sports Illustrated I realize that’s not really a done deal.

Ironically the one caveat SI used to say the Bucs may pick Fameis is Lovie’s belief that he is Father Flanigan of Boystown and is perfectly suited for rehabilitating Fameis.

Where JBF had me believing it was 90-10 that Fameis was the pick, now SI has me thinking it’s more 50-50.

I am definitely crossing my fingers…pls, pls, pls, Bucs. Pick the one who can make a real difference!

  176. Reggie Roby Says:

Anyone who wants Winston to be our #1 pick is racist against all Hawaiians. You haters also hate Hawaiian Punch and Hawaiian Rolls.

  177. Pat Says:

Nad again, I’m not worried about Marcus being a run-first guy. He understands how he’s got to play knowing he is very mobile. Now, the NFL player that Mariota compares to is…Russell Wilson. But physically they are very different. They do have similar styles, but in terms of physicality Marcus is much bigger than Russell Wilson is. They both have great arms. It all comes down to the maturity thing. And they are both boring QBs! Go Mariota!

    Go Bucs!!!!!

  180. BoJim Says:

    Desperation everywhere.

  181. StPeteBucsFan Says:

ESPN the magazine has Fameis on their cover. They had a reporter trail Fameis for the cover story.

That story is pretty balanced. But it really does leave a lot of questions about Fameis personality. Apparently like many humans Fameis is a very complex guy and some love him others simply do not trust him.

He’s no hero back home but as ESPN explained part of that could be because he didn’t sign with either Alabama and Auburn and of course it is Dixie and so a part of it is racism.

Bottom line…the story left just as many questions remaining as any answers it provided.

Two major national publications and both totally different than JBF.

@Luther I certainly take your point about whether local reporters are perhaps better connected than national reporters. Perhaps that explains some of it. Then again perhaps they are journalists and not bloggers or pundits and feel some need for objectivity. I guess we’ll all find out in a couple of weeks.

Had to enjoy a Vodka on the rocks myself. Went out with the wife to a cheap restaurant for some wings. But they make really weak drinks. You would have to endure too much 7 up or sprite. I circumvent this problem by just getting a Vodka on the rocks. Forces them to provide a decent drink. Of course if I allow myself a second then it forces the wife to drive home!

Interesting that the sponsorship came on the coat tails of the lawsuit. I would not be surprised if the sponsorship announcement was timed to counterattack.

  187. WS99 Says:

BR has a report that winston is going to fight the suit. I’m telling you just settle and be done with it.

  188. ATrain Says:

BTW that SI piece is part of their NFL draft issue out this week.

Now don’t shoot me I’m just the messenger but SI is going to hack off a lot of people here. They profiled their top 300 College athletes according to their research of the people “in the know”.

Neither Fameis nor Marcus is rated as their BPA at #1. Here is their top 10. Again don’t blast me just sharing SI’s info…

    1.) Leonard Williams DT USC
    2.) Marcus Mariota QB Oregon
    3.)Randy Gregory DE/OLB Nebraska
    4.)Kevin White WR West Va.
    5.) Dante Fowler DE/OLB Florida
    6.) Jameis Winston QB FSU
    7.) Amari Cooper WR Alabama
    8.)Brandon Scherff OT/G Iowa
    9.) Devante Parker WR Louisville
    10.) Vic Beasley OLB Clemson

Remember these are their BPA’s not a mock draft. I seriously doubt we’ll see three WR’s go in the top ten.

I grew up in Kentucky and alas I never mastered Bourbon. But you sir are doing it right. Sipping is the way to go!

For some reason the “brown” liquors always gave me hangovers where the clear drinks like Gin or Vodka do not. Ok I’m a racist prejudiced against brown booze.

Dean Martin? I’m and old dude and Dean Martin was my mom’s fave. She thought he was a handsome hunk.

I must say I did admire his evening show when I was a young guy. He was a naturally funny man. In my family everybody thought that Dean was the talent and Jerry Lewis was just a clown.

Ahhh say it ain’t so. I smoked pot for 20 years. Got off that, moved onto vodka and progressed into bourbon. Although in the summers I move into Margarita’s quite a bit. Tequila is a whole different animal though, but I love my Jack or Jim Beam if I’m a little light on cash.

Age has slowed me down in many areas and made some things like the gym mandatory. But I still enjoy the occasional break from the grind.

  208. Trubucfan22 Says:

So is the divide strictly between Winston and mariota? Or is there a fan base that is hoping for something else?

Really I don’t see either becoming great qbs. But I think Winston is more likely to be good than mariota is. Mariota is no leader. To me that’s the biggest thing. Leadership is #1, and Winston has that. But the “haters” side is right that Winston has the red flags. But who cares? If he can win games in Tampa that’s all that matters. And he screws up in 2 years and gets kicked out of the NFL then we try again and draft another QB. Winston has upside. Mariota could be decent, a serviceable qb with a 12 yr career. But I don’t want mediocre, Winston could hit it big. Imo we gotta hit a home run. A bloop single isn’t going to turn this franchise around.

  209. tval Says:

    Just do it, lovie! 🙂
    1. Jameis
    2. Amari
    3. Fowler
    4. Parker
    5. Williams
    6. Shelton
    7. Scherff
    8. White
    9. Dupree
    10. Dgb (enormous risk but im talking risk/reward) mamula was drafted #13, right? 🙂 gaines adams? Some dez type talents pan-out and keep their head on relatively straight like most working adults. He could be elite but he needs mandatory anger management from the beginning. Somewhat of a chris henry (rip) that guy was gonna be great too.

  210. Buc1987 Says:

UF Alum…oh I fell in love with Devil’s Cut.

Go Bucs! ( have to keep the topic relevant)

  211. tval Says:

  212. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Dag I’ve read most of this, just got off work. Gotta admit I’m kinda surprise to see robert9 and UFalum go at it on some racial s@$!. I really hope UFalum that you’re not a racist because I enjoy some of your post even if you are a gator. Truth be told I’ma proud black man. Wouldn’t trade my ethnicity for anything. Not to say mine is better than any other, that’s just how I feel. Robert9 I wanna salute your stance but I don’t know UFalum personally to say he is racist but what I will say is I appreciate you standing up in that regard seeing as how that’s how you felt and responded. I’m critical of you and your opinion often but on that note I salute you homie.

  213. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Trubucfan

The leadership thing has been tossed around on this blog ad infinitum. Say something long enough and loud enough and it becomes true. Perception is reality. But that’s just here on JBF.

Again from SI’s draft issue quoting Ryan Flaherty a speed coach who worked with both Jameis and Marcus as well as current NFL QB’s.

“The great ones and the really really good ones…they just have it
You can’t put your finger on it They don’t move a certain way, they don’t look a certain way. What it comes down to is: They have the football IQ, they’re really smart, and they’re relentless in this pursuit of being perfect. They’re the hardest working people in the room, and they’re charismatic.
People just want to follow them. They’re born leaders. Marcus has all of those traits…so does Jameis.”

And so there is an objective opinion from a national publication. They both have IT. Andrew Luck actually congratulates defenders who break through and get a really hard lick on him. Tells them “nice hit” or “nice shot”. Even his teammates are amazed. But since he’s humble and nice I’m sure Luck must suck as a leader and completely lacks the “it” factor.

  214. Buc1987 Says:

    Trubucfan22 …I concur 100%.

Yet the divide isn’t just between Winston and Mariota. Some just bash Winston to bash Winston. The Mike Glennon Mob is barely still there, but they are still there. robert 9 is one of them, hence his utter hatred for all things Winston.

Some are in the trade down crowd (I have no idea why) and they don;t like Jameis at all. Then again some in that crowd don’t want either QB. Again I have no idea why.

  215. Buc1987 Says:

  218. UF Alum that loves the Bucs Says:

Hey Nole on Sat. No worries man. I have never spoken to Robert 9 in the almost 3 yrs I have been here because I like to discuss the Bucs rationally and he always seems to be the center of controversy. He said I am racist because I live in Montana that I am racist. I live in Montana because I can make twice the money I make in Tampa. I am far from racist. I have had several different races save my ass in combat and I did the same.

  219. Buc1987 Says:

LOL I like soooooo many kinds of music. I’m all over the place. I can go from Dean one day to Metallica the next then onto Eminem, then onto George Strait. Then move onto today’s pop, then onto old skool gangtsa rap, then onto 80’s, or 90’s alternative, then onto The Grateful Dead.

There’s nobody as eclectic to me when it comes to music…

  237. BuccaneEric Says:

Hello everybody. I’ve benn (pun intended) on JBF since I found it two years ago but I’ve never commented before. I think I like reading the comments more than the articles!! I like Jameis even though he scares me. I like Mariota too and would understand if they take him and they still may. I’ll be happy with the hope of a good QB either way. The only thing the draft brings is hope. The games are much more fun to watch when you don’t know if the QB is going to screw up! Dilfer, King, or Freeman, when you have a rookie QB you always have feeling that the next throw will be a TD. That he will be “the guy”. With McCown you knew what was going to happen and it wasn’t going to be pretty! I think Glennon never got a fair shot but I also don’t think he could be more than an average QB. I was happy getting Lovie but now I’m not so sure. Just a few thoughts. Also I can’t wait to come on here after the Bucs pick to see what 87 and Erik have to say!!! GO BUCS!!!

  238. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I appreciate your thanks 87 and Nole! I may be almost 50 but I promise you I am still ready.
All that aside I am ready for the Bucs to draft a QB. If it is the choice that you guys ache for then I am HAPPY!. I will also be happy if it is Mariota. I was in the trade down crowd but after studying these kids I WANT A QB

  240. BuccaneEric Says:

I’m with you UF Alum!! I’m ready for a QB!!!!

  241. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

If Lovie picks Jameis, I will smoke an entire joint and drink a bunch of Bourbon or Scotch and scream,

If Lovie picks Marcus, I will smoke an entire joint and drink a bunch of bourbon or Scotch and scream

If Lovie picks whoever, I will smoke an entire joint and drink a bunch of bourbon or Scotch and scream

I just happen to think Jameis is not a goat killer but a sharpshooter who makes his teammates play better and refuses to lose.

  242. BuccaneEric Says:

I don’t smoke but I’ll have a a six pack or two in me by 8:00!! I want them to pick Jameis but if they go Mariota I’ll be depressed for about, uuh, I don’t know, two miniutes. Then I’ll hope that Marcus is the real deal.

  246. Buc1987 Says:

BuccaneEric…lol thanks for all of that.

Ya see Joe. They LOVE me. I’m Fameis.

To think you once banned me from your site. Although I asked you to do it, you still threatened it and I won’t be threatened. YOUR site NEEDS me Joe. lol

Ha ha ha I have a fan club.

It’s just like every work place I’ve ever been in. When I would quit or get fired, then come back for a visit, people would go nuts to get me back. It’s not ego, it’s just the way it’s always been. I’m an entertaining mofo.

Too funny. I love this team with everything I got. I’ve waited 28 years for a franchise QB and we’re close aren’t we Joe. We’re damn close.

  247. BuccaneEric Says:

87, I love that you and Erik are on the complete opposite ends of this debate! Can’t wait till draft night!! One eye on the TV, one eye on JBF!

  248. Buc1987 Says:

BuccaneEric…take nothing away from the Joe’s though. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them. I love their articles. There’s nothing Buc-related like JBF on the net. You won’t find it anywhere. I’ve tried. My wife, hates JBF. Trust me she has to hear it like the rest of you.

If you guys think that you can’t wait for the draft, you ain’t got nothing on my wife. She’s tired of hearing it. Jameis this and Jameis that. Every single day.

Love and Dunn…I just love music man. I hardly ever watch TV. Possibly because I grew up in an historic town that would not allow the ground to be dug up for cable TV until 1985 or so. So I had basically 3 channels and tons of radio stations. I listened to a lot of music. I latch onto anything good. I can get into some Prince pre-Purple Rain funk, or 50’s Etta James. I’m talking nearly everything you can think of, outside of classical, but I’ve been pondering that too as I get older. Perhaps some Mozart or whatever.

  249. UF Alum that loves the Bucs Says:

    Yessiree BuccaneEric!
I agree with you. I can’t wait for draft day! I believe I will have a big smile on my face when we come off the clock

  250. Buc1987 Says:

BuccaneEric…I never even pondered the thought of anyone else getting into this jersey thingy. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the debates. I won’t be too hard on Erik at all. I mean he’s buying me a jersey and all. He IS a Bucs fan after all.

When I first found JBF in 2013 I couldn’t understand why Bucs fans were fighting with other Bucs fans. I mean it took me a few weeks to get it. Until I realized that not everyone thinks the way I do when it comes to the Bucs. That’s when the fuse was lit and I owe it to these 2 guys that started this website way back when…

  251. BuccaneEric Says:

87, I agree, JBF is much better than anywhere else. More articles in one day than Pewter Report has in one week. I also listen to WTB and Bucs Brief. I listen to 620 on iheart cause I live in PA and I like the shows. Although I think the Big Dog is too full of himself sometimes and try’s too hard to let people know that he’s in the “in crowd”. I miss 98.7 The Fan!!

  252. Buc1987 Says:

Even still I don’t really care what other Bucs fans think. lol

HawaiinBuc is a classic example. Him and I used to get into battles on this site for days. We are both VERY opinionated but we thought very differently. People would come here just to read the battles, because they said so. We’re still good online friends though, because we’re Buc fans. We’re all Buc fans. We want what’s best for our floundering team. We just have different ideas about how it should go about. Even though we have no control over what will happen. Lost of passionate fans on this site. In my case, perhaps a little too passionate.

  253. Buc1987 Says:

I worked at a large resort for 7 years, over 2,000 employees. Each year there was a Christmas party. When I would show up to the party, spouses that I would meet, would say OMG so you’re Mark. You’re the guy that my husband or wife always talks about at the dinner table. I got a kick out of it.

Okay well I got to get to bed now. It’s late and my wife broke her foot about 2 weeks ago, so I have to play Mr. Mom in the morning like I have been for the last 2 weeks. Probably why I’ve been so cranky to everyone on here for the last 2 weeks. I’m cranky around the house too.

I wrote the Buccaneers is show my support for them drafting Jameis Winston. I let them know that my family and I have had season tickets since ’76 would be purchasing 4 more if JW was drafted. They wrote me right back with a thank you and vip tickets to the draft party. Would they have done this if they were drafting someone else?

The Tampa Bay Times was the first to report this story.

“Jameis Winston … has proven time and time again to be an entitled athlete who believes he can take what he wants,” Clune said in a statement, via The Times. “He took something here that he was not entitled to and he hurt someone. There are consequences for that behavior and since others have refused to hold him accountable, our client will.”

Kinsman alleged that after riding in a cab back to Winston’s apartment in the fall of 2012 that she was raped by Winston in his bedroom. In the lawsuit, she claims that Ronald Darby, a teammate of Winston’s at Florida State, interrupted the alleged incident and said, “Dude, she is telling you to stop.”

  261. Buc1987 Says:

Barry is that the 3rd, 4th, or 5th story.

  262. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Barry

Darby swore under oath that he saw them engage in consensual sex, including oral sex. At the hospital, they found Winston’s DNA on her face as well. Was she giving head against her will? The nurse also noted redness on her knees.

  263. Jp Says:

To Curtis gatorboy: you must first be prosecuted of a felony to be considered a felon. Jameis was not, in fact charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence. Therefore Jameis is not a felon, and you come off as an idiot.

  264. Buc1987 Says:

Love and Warrick Dunn…lol this is almost as good as a porn site now. Very descriptive stuff man, yikes.

this is the thread that never endsss
it goes on and on my friendssss

You are dead wrong. Big Ben paid off 2 sexual assault victims and Manning paid of at least one. Sexual assault is Sexual. Just because it doesn’t fit your agenda doesn’t lessen the facts

To me, this has little impact on the current situation, because those were not Buccaneers players.

At best, it shows that people can make mistakes like that and come back from them, straighten themselves out. But every player in that situation, there are probably a dozen that continue having issues for every one that doesn’t.

The biggest concern I have is whether Jameis Winston will walk the straight and narrow from here on out.

He’s a DIVA guy, so I have my doubts. They usually end up in situations they should not be in, or feel a sense of entitlement they have not earned.

If he is drafted to Tampa, I’m going to hope for the best. It won’t be easy on him, because the media will follow him constantly and cut him no slack. Everything that can make him look bad will be reported. His character will determine how he handles that.

  267. BoltIsle Says:

Where do you get Winston is a DIVA?

If anyone would know, it would be his teammates, the coaching staff and athletic staff and nobody has ever even hinted at that. And they would not be shy about voicing an anonymous opinion.

Some of you are just trolling with this nonsense you type and nothing to back it up.

  268. David Says:

Funny how Mariota also getting a contract with Nike was not mentioned. Only the loser gets credit, how original.

  269. downtowndc Says:

I’m new here, although I have been a bucs fan since early in 1981 season. Whether in person or tv/radio, I’ve not missed a game since that victory over Minnesota.

I don’t know who the pick will be, but I do think going all-in with an individual with significant known character issues does run against the long-standing position of the current ownership.

With the admittedly obvious exception of Sapp, the Glazers have cut ties with players with issues both major and rather humdrum.

David Boston, Darnell McDonald, Aqib Talib, #5, t jack, Blount, as well as coaching staff who’ve popped up in the wrong headlines.

None of these are franchise qbs, for sure. Still, this is an extremely conservative organization. Going against tendency would be a surprise.

Coupled with a head coach whose on offensive shortcomings are well known, but who must be recognized as a stubborn architect of a defensive scheme that will either save or cost his job, I would not be surprised if it comes down to throwing mariota into the fire and hoping for 6-10…or putting Williams next to McCoy and riding the defense to 7-9, while trying to determine if koetter can coach up the qb who has shown glimpses at times – and still on his rookie contract.

If you must gamble, take the best available overall.

  270. lurker Says:

mariota has been under contract since his oregon days! you don’t think those players get more than free crablegs?

  271. lurker Says:

and best available overall is winston, not mariota or williams. winston fills the biggest need and williams doesn’t fit.

  272. downtowndc Says:

I’m certainly not going to clench my teeth and wring my hands if we draft the top qb prospect in the draft, or even if we take the “next” best qb prospect.

Just reading tea leaves like everyone else. We have ultra-conservative ownership, and a very stubborn defensive hc who took rex grossman to the super bowl. Surely, there’s been discussion along the lines of: “if my front is dominant, I can have a game manager under center and win.”

  273. TheShaz Says:

    downtowndc:

Yup, Lovie took a team with a nobody at QB and lost, because of having nobody at QB.

Both Lovie and his mentor BOTH lost jobs because as good as their defenses ended up being, if you cant score, you cant get to the top.

Dungy got his ring, not on his defense, but on Manning’s back. Lovie I assume and hope learned his lesson as well.

    You need a QB.

Will Winston be that QB? Let you know in 12 days.

  274. brad Says:

you guys do understand that at this point it does not cost Nike anything to “sign” him. The are basically signing up for his rights once he is drafted, so whatever they paid him is probably a pittance to them. Think of it as buying $1 worth of penny stocks. If it hits that great, if it tanks your out a buck.
