Report: Lovie Leaves Not Locked Down

January 1st, 2014

Tampa Tribune scribe Roy Cummings is reporting tonight, via an unnamed source, that Lovie Smith interviewed for the Bucs’ vacant head coaching job yesterday.

But Lovie has not been hired, it seems, as reports out of the Detroit Free Press say Lovie is heading to Detroit for a wooing in the Motor City.

Lovie and Lions general manager Martin Mayhew (yes, the Lions have a general manager in place unlike the Bucs) have a long-standing relationship. Mayhew laid out criteria for the Lions next head coach, and it seems Lovie is a perfect fit.

Tonight, the Washington Post reported the Redskins want to bring in Lovie for a sit-down, as well.

Joe’s going to find it hard to believe Lovie won’t be pounced on hard by the Lions. He knows their division, and the Lions, much like the Bucs, have some premier pieces in place on defense. The Lions also have a quarterback, which one would think makes the Detroit job more attractive than the Tampa Bay gig.

Yep, being reported they are finalizing the deal now. Looks like his coordinators are Mike Tolbert and Leslie Frazier. It doesn’t get much better than that. But I’m sure many of you will cry because we didn’t hire the person you wanted, and proceed to say how much of a failure Lovie was in Chicago.

They’re actually reporting that they’re finalizing the details. Which means it’s pretty much a done deal.
