Looks Like Jeff Hafley Is On Board With Bucs

February 7th, 2012

Earlier today, Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com reported Bucs new coach Greg Schiano is nearly finished compiling his new staff.

One name that popped up is defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley. It seems like that is a done deal for Hafley to come to Tampa Bay. Bucs defensive back Larry Asante is Twittering that Hafley is indeed the Bucs’ new defensive backs coach.

Hafley comes from — wait for it — Rutgers! Prior to joining Schiano last season, Hafley worked for Dave Wannstedt at Pitt.

I wholly expect joebucsfan.com to receive sponsorship from a plush couch peddling shrink.

  3. surv Says:

Not such a bad thing. Having all the coaches on the same page is real important IMO. Definitely wasn’t the case with the start of Raheem’s tenure and GregO never seemed on page either with that “physical” game Rah talked about.

    In Schiano we trust.

  4. Dew Says:

Joe, bottom line I had four season tickets the last few seasons and I’m not renewing them. If I see the Bucs can actually compete I will reconsider. I’m just not excited and IMO Dom has again put us in a crappy position trying to find position coaches.

  5. eric Says:

all roads lead to wannstedt one of the most unimaginatve bores in nfl history.

all we need is turner to wrap up this disaster.

    Understand you Dew.

Meh I still renewed both sets of my season tickets this year. I’ll watch even crappy football over being put to work by the wifey on Sundays at home any day lol

    @BKNY You nailed it.

  13. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

    @sunrisejeff haha Good one.

  14. Fear The Glow Says:

I wont be surprised if a good bit of this coaching staff gets very short and very cheap contracts. With this coaching search starting so late a few of these guys probably wont be on staff next offseason when the Bucs can get a first shot at ALL coaching candidates.

Im HOPING that is the reason we have a college coach turning down a coordinator position. Short contract / cheap contract offer.

  15. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

I’m sure this kid is the best, and most experienced coach to teach our horrible secondary, right?

They wouldn’t just hire some nobody kid because he’s cheap, would they??

  16. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

It’s official. The Glazers are slumlords.
    And, like it our not.

    We are tenants

    Nothing but the cheapest.

  17. BucFat Says:

    Tampa Bay Rutgerneers
It’s going to take Schiano 11 years before we make it to the Superbowl.

  18. BucFat Says:

I must say, I’m hating the Glazers more each year.

  19. Brandon Says:

What’s his name? Greg Hefley? Why does that sound familiar? I wonder if my 6 and 8 year olds could help me out on this one.

  20. Rrsrq Says:

Why wouldn’t they bring back the special teams coach, Dwayne Starks or something like that, he wasn’t bad, just had no weapons other than kicker and punter

  21. Trox Says:

I’m so happy the fans at Joe Bucs fan know how to judge who is a quality secondary coach. He must suck because you said so.

  22. Sgt Mike Says:

So who do you think will be our new athletic director? Will Talib run the student union? Do you think Schiano can talk the Glazerhouses into bringing down the band for “Spirit”? …… This has Lou Holtz written all over it. Do you think Schiano will pen a new fight song?

  23. j lynch Says:

Isnt Mr Magoo a Rutgers grad????

  24. raphael Says:

lol @ everybody freaking out…they haven’t had 1 practice yet. btw didn’t Harbaugh in SF hire a bunch of his college coaches ??? relax people !

  25. Matt D Says:

Just curious, but shouldn’t everyone give the staff a chance before resulting to nothing but negativity? I don’t normally watch college ball, but the skill level of players from Rutgers and the NFL probably differ quite a bit. I bring that up because maybe these coaches that will be hired from Rutgers are actually really good coaches if they had more talent to go with them. Now I’m not saying our secondary, or any skill position players for that matter, are extremely talented. I would say they are more talented than college kids though.

I’m just saying, maybe give the staff a chance. Especially the new head coach. Hasn’t even coached a day in Tampa yet, and everyone is bashing him saying how terrible the Bucs will be because he’s not a veteran NFL coach.

I’ll be watching the Bucs all season long, barring any shutting down of the site I use to stream the games.

  26. Brown Bag Says:

    Praying for a MArty/Butch rope-a-dope surprise. C’mon Glazers!

  27. jvato24 Says:

Quick everyone. Who are the DB coaches for the Steelers, Packers and Ravens ???

One thing this tells me is that DC is a done deal. No way they hire position coaches and try to lure a DC here with a pre-assembled staff

  28. RCH Says:

Don’t find this much of a surprise anybody that knows anything should’ve expected us to hire a few position coaches from his former staff. I guess the good thing for every Buc fan living in lala land is that we have taken so long to hire coaches because I could see us with pick of the crop and Schiano still passing on people to bring in some people from Rutgers because thats who he is comfortable with thats how it goes and Harbaugh did the same thing. For everyone calling the owner is mind bongeling to me when they paid Gruden millions of dollars as long as they did offered Chip Kelly 6 mill a here and tried to make runs at top FA’s in the past such as Fat Albert in his prime and Farve. Im sure ownwership wants this to work more than alot of people on here do because they dont want to have to fire this guy in two years and pay him for not working for three years so these hires are important to them. Obviously the people who think that werent here for the culverhouse days.

  29. TampaRob Says:

umm.. please remember that most of Saint Tony’s coaches, except for Herm and Monte, came from colleges. We all said “who?” And please stop it with the “cheap” crap. Until we see what’s spent in FA we have absolutely zero clue about how much money is being offered to anyone including the assistant coaches- and we’ll probably never know until some agent blabs and the contracts are approved by the league.

People- Culverhouse hired people (Perkins) and drafted (Curry, et al) just because they had ties to Bama. Not because they were the best or even better than anyone else. And he held fans in contempt AND charged players .50 for Cokes in a vending machine. Oh yeah- and the weight “room” was at the end of a taxiway at TIA. It’s called perspective. Get some.

  30. jvato24 Says:

Mind bongeling ….. I like it

  31. CC Says:

Glazerhouses are CHEAP. Its a fact. Why would anybody defend them?

  32. bucfanjeff Says:

Seems like you should have an OC and DC to help you with the rest of the coaches. Tell me again why a DC would come here with a pre-assembled staff? Am I missing something?

  33. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @javato24
    Thats a good point.

I looking at thing like this: Schiano is facing an uphill battle, but its up to him to make it work. People have some valid reasons for concern…but that doesn’t justify an assumption of failure.

    @Dew
Define a bandwagoner…then look back at what you said.

  34. Bobby Says:

Hey, I know nothing about this guy and because of that I have to declare him a total waste. After all, if I haven’t seen his name in neon lights like the defensive backs coach from Pittsburg…you know…what’s his name…oh yeah! and the defensive backs coach from Baltimore…yeah…that guy….now those guys we all know by name and we know they were probably former HC’s or something because NOONE COMING OUT OF COLLEGE CAN BE SUCCESSFUL!!!! The Capt. tells us so and we know he’s just friggin’ brilliant.
He predicted the Bucs would lose and they did! He’s a regular NostrafrigginDamus. If he says it then it’s a done deal baby. Hafley doesn’t have a chance.

  35. Pete Dutcher Says:

    I will answer, bucfanjeff.

Notice the hires are defense? To me this means the DC issue is already decided. Contract talks are likely near complete for it. Or Shiano is possibly going to be more hands-on with the def than we figured.

I think OC is a challenge to fill because of teams blocking us. The Bucs MAY have to hire all college staff at this rate.

I have to wonder if prejudice toward college coaches making the jump is causing issues as well. Are candidates assuming failure?

And finally, not one hire other than Shiano has been announced by the Bucs. Why?

Because they must be in talks with a DC. At this point it would not surprise me if they already hired a DC and it just hasn’t leaked out yet.

  36. Architek Says:

No what you do is offer the teams cash or assets (negotiate) to get them to consider your interest. But the big picture here is the lack of urgency in finding a HC from the beginning and once again over-value of the Bucs organizational state. This is going to be a train wreck and I am going out on a limb but here it goes. The Bucs will go 3-13 this season. Mark me down for a losing season. Not bashing but no captain of the ship at the lower levels and credibility has doomed the Bucs.

Can you imagine Kellen Winslow listening to a college coach amid another losing season? All is not lost but all is not well.

  37. TampaRob Says:

CC: I’ve said it before in other posts- they are NOT cheap. They are not spenders like Snyder or Jones, but that hasn’t exactly worked out either. Spending out of pocket to build the practice facility (yes, there were some tax dollars, but mostly private funding), signing Winslow despite his injury history, offering Haynesworth more than the Skins did.. not to mention the trainwreck that got Bruce Allen and Gruden including Luke Petigout, Charlie Garner, Ike Hilliard, Jeff Garcia, or Dominik’s Derrick Ward and Jeff Faine.. need I go on? The problem has not been the money spent, but the quality of the FAs and then the field leadership. Please tell me what FAs that the Giants overspent on – or the Patriots, for that matter, and I’ll give you some props. Giant’s money was tied up in their DL (that they drafted just like the Bucs did) and Eli. The problem isn’t amount spent, but on who it was spent ON.

  38. TampaRob Says:

Giants, Packers, 49ers (OK, I’ll give you bargain basement retread Carlos Rogers), Ravens and Patriots all built through the draft resigning their own players. Cowboys, Eagles, Skins, Raiders, Dolphins, Jets, and Bills who made big waves with player signings all had to buy tickets to the playoffs.

  39. TampaRob Says:

..oh yeah- and the 49ers did it with college coaches who replaced veteran NFL guys. And the Giants were coached by a BigEast reject who couldn’t win his conference AND was too old to be a good coach. Raven’s HC was a special teams coach that nobody had on their radar, Everyone’s favorite hire, Shanahan, flamed out so far. Again- please tell me what basis anyone is using to criticize these new Bucs coaches before they even have even ONE OTA or minicamp?

  40. Bobby Says:

When Jim Harbaugh brough in his OC and DC from Stanford I’ll bet the entire 49’er fan base was saying similar things. “We’re doomed!” “Losing season here we come” but that just proved that a good coach can coach anywhere, all they need is talent. I still think it’s a waste of keystrokes to start getting all doom and gloom when the combine hasn’t even taken place yet. We won’t know until the season starts next year what these guys can or can’t do.

  41. Joe Says:

    Bobby:

When Jim Harbaugh brough in his OC and DC from Stanford I’ll bet the entire 49′er fan base was saying similar things. “We’re doomed!”

HUGE difference between Harbaugh’s staff and the one Schiano is proported to be hiring. Almost an apples-to-oranges comparison.

  42. Joe Says:

    TampaRob:

And the Giants were coached by a BigEast reject who couldn’t win his conference AND was too old to be a good coach.

Dude, lay off the bourbon. This is nearly as bad as saying the 49ers dynasty was built by a low-rung PAC-10 has-been.

  43. TampaRob Says:

Joe- my point was simply that it’s too early to judge and to counter the people that threw those words around. I am the ultimate realist- not half full or half empty. I am willing to give Schiano the benefit of the doubt right now. Just like Raheem- we need to judge based on overall performance and body of work – not some some past body of work. And I was still a pre-teen when Walsh was hired in San Fran, but I could imagine if there were blogs and talk radio that DeBartolo would have been called every name in the book for passing on Walt Michaels, Weeb Eubanks, or some other big name at the time in favor of some college guy.

  44. Joe Says:

    TampaRob:

Walsh had a solid body of work on his resume WAY better than Schiano or even Harbaugh.

  45. Bobby Says:

Joe, you make my point. ‘purported’ to be hiring. Nothing is written in stone yet. If we got John Shoop as OC and Butch Davis as DC how would that be so drastically different? ‘Position’ coaches can come from college ranks and do just fine. Seems like the LB coach at San Fran is a former college guy right??
Jim..uh…whats his name….’grin’. I would not be happy with an OC and DC that came from the college ranks with no prior NFL experience. I think that WOULD be a recipe for disaster but I don’t have a problem with position coaches.

  46. TampaRob Says:

Joe- I’ll give you that Walsh had more years under his belt in the pros- 1 year as RB coach under Al Davis, 6 as an “assistant” under Paul Brown, and 1 as OC in San Diego- and was known for turning around the Cincinnati offense. Again, my point is that these fans here would have blasted that hire just as badly as they’re ripping into Schiano. They’d be screaming that the Bucs were too cheap to get Cowher (or fill in whatever unemployed ex-coach was available in ’79)
Again, my only point is that it’s way too early to judge. He may very well flame out and follow Bobby Petrino’s path, but we at least owe him the benefit of a season before we judge.. and Walsh did not improve his 49ers until his 2nd season there.

  47. Joe Says:

    TampaRob:

and Walsh did not improve his 49ers until his 2nd season there.

Because Walsh was stocking up on draft picks. Imagine.

  48. jarrett Says:

tamparob- The giants had a plethora of dlineman but signed canty, boley, and resigned their guys. They also signed baas on the oline. Antrelle Rolle would be another. just sayin
