Make Tim Wright The No. 3 Receiver?

October 15th, 2013

Immediately after the Bucs-Eagles game, Joe floated the idea that emerging rookie tight end Tim Wright and his wide receiver frame might be best suited as the Bucs’ No. 3 wide receiver right now, especially with Tom Crabtree returning to the lineup.

On Monday morning, former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht suggested the same thing during an interview on WDAE-AM 620.

It’s been dreadful for the Bucs at No. 3 receiver. Kevin Ogletree couldn’t hold the ball, and Tiquan Underwood looked lost Sunday in his first game back off the couch.

Yesterday, Wright coming off seven catches for 91 yards against the Eagles, talked about how he’s learning the difference in how linebackers cover him versus defensive backs, and he explained how he’s been preparing as a starter since he was the fifth string tight end in training camp. You can hear more from Wright, including his Rutgers-man perspective on Greg Schiano, in the WDAE-AM 620 audio below.

    Hey, why not?
He’s from Rutgers…that’s all you really need to get a chance to start on this team!

  2. ATLBucsFan Says:

Despite his history I hope he continues to improve. If Glennon can get comfortable with his receivers over the next few games (Hey, maybe some extra work like he and Vincent did last week would help) then he will open space for Vincent and Mike!

  3. Nick2 Says:

What a poor job Dom is doing. If we had a decent #3 we wouldn’t even be talking about this. How many teams start multiple games without a tight end?????? If I had been Dom I would have cut Stocker last year. We are woefully thin in every area and GM is supposed to stock the talent but our cupboard is bare!!

  4. Capt. Tim Says:

This team is desperate for a 3rd Wr. Why not Wright.
Book is, two small for TE, but Too slow for Wr.
But he has talent- looks ideal for H-Back! Kind of a Hybred between TE/Wr/FB.
We don’t use an Hback currently- but with Wrights skills, you use the playmakers you have!!

If only our coach was flexible and open to Change!

Hopefully next regime will utilize Wright! He’s kind of a cool tweener- just a bit to much for linebackers to handle!

  5. PRBucFan Says:

Why would we switch the only TE threat we finally have to a 3rd receiver?

The announcers mentioned how it was said that Wright wasn’t the best fit as a WR but he became a monster as a TE option. In my own words of course but you get the picture.

I think he may be a gem and the great thing is he seems to be building a great chemistry with Glennon.

  6. buc wilder Says:

i think he’s fine as a TE. TE’s usually dictate a better matchup against LB’s and S’s. We can still utilize him and Crabtree in two TE sets. Then we can utilize speed in the slot with Paige or Owusu. Tiquan is better than Ogletree, but don’t think he’s the answer to the #3 WR void.

  7. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    12 catches in two games.

I guess it all depends on what Crabtree can do.

  8. tha truth is ... Says:

why change what’s working? we need speed at tha 3rd WR spot 2 stretch tha defenses from stacking tha box. Demps and Owusu should be ur deep route runners 2 take tha top off of tha coverages so teams wouldn’t squat on routes as often as they do.

  9. BucsfaninChina Says:

Meh. Guy is slow as hell. Wait for Jimmy Graham in upcoming free agency

  10. Joke Says:

Wright caught some balls, but that doesn’t mean the offense is working. I assume one of the problems with our running game is not having a real tight end.

So I like Joe’s idea. Crabtree at TE, Wright as #3 WR.

  11. PRBucFan Says:

I doubt Graham would even dream of leaving Brees’s side.

  12. AJ Says:

This is a good idea, what else is there to lose? Wright looks like another player who wears #81, Anquan Boldin…. If he’s 1/5th the receiver Boldin is, we’re better off than where we are now. He can learn/grow with Glennon, but just needs to catch those balls like the one he dropped in the back of the end zone like in New England.

  13. SteveK Says:

We could cut one of our expensive Guards and pay that money to Jimmy Graham. Should be a no brainer. Should be.

Our talent is there, but the wins are not coming. What the hell did Buc fans do wrong to deserve enduring this 6 year rebuild.

Where is the depth? Where is the 10 sack guy?

If we go to Seattle, and Michael Bennett has a field day, and the Seadderall Seahawks leave us defeated, on the season, than the ax should be coming.

We haven’t had 10 sacks since Simeon Rice, since Bruce Allen was our GM.

I understand the frustration towards Schiano, but if he goes Dom better go with him.

No more excuses for the “Rock Star”. Call for Schiano’s head, but Dominick better be a package deal.

No more BS, or “Bull Spit” as some like to call it, Dominick clowned off and traded up for Freemadonna.

  14. bigpoppabuc Says:

No way…. As a receiver he’s too slow for the slot… As I receiving tight end he is just right. A mismatch for linebackers and safeties one on one. He’s gained significant weight since switching to te, and an improvement in his overall strength and some coaching could help him in the run game. I like a healthy Crabtree and an improving Wright as our two te set.

  15. SteveK Says:

Our GM also signed Albert Haynesworth after his EPIC MNF FAIL with the Redskins.

Literally, we “had to” sign Haynesworth.

Derrick Ward, extending Michael Clayton, every 2nd round pick prior to LVD54.

If we can’t get better with Schiano, then it better be without Schiano AND Dominick. No more passes.

Overpaying a Kicker, as soon as the league makes it easier to kick touch backs.

24-41, and still losing. #The Glory Years #6 year rebuild #Are we there yet?

  16. PRBucFan Says:

Graham won’t leave Brees Stevek, IMO

  17. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

Wright is working well at TE….he is a matchup problem…..just feed him a few extra pork chops and make sure it is sweet tea.

Don’t give up on Underwood after one game back…and we have potential at the 3rd WR with Page & Owusu….stay the couirse on the Tim Wright project.

I would bet that Glennon agrees!!!

  18. Patrick in VA Says:

Graham has already started openly that he’ll retire before he leaves brees. Dude’s got big time Dad issues and brees plays that role for him. He’s staying put

  19. Capt. Tim Says:

Wright is doing great as a recieving TE. Also, they list him at 220 now. Initially listed at 210.

Only issue? Too light to be an inline blocker.

But at last, we had someone running in the middle of the field!! It really took the Eagles by Surprise!

    But they did adjust.
Wish we could adjust to something!

  20. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

We should offer Graham big $$$$$ thus jacking his price up for NO…..an old business trick……offer someone something they won’t accept but cost your competition.

  21. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

Ensure for Wright….Lots of taters, rice, carbs & cheesecake…let him go on the Shaun King diet!!!

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  22. Adam L. Says:

I drove by Rutgers once… i wonder if Coach Schiano would let me pass out towels.

  23. PRBucFan Says:

“we had someone running in the middle of the field!!”

I agree, that is very refreshing to have for a change.

And he isn’t scared one bit to do it.

  24. Michael Clayton Says:

Why not me? The check is still in the bank.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

There are some pretty damn good TE’s coming out in next years draft. The dude from UNC is a beast. Can’t remember his name though. But he looks solid.

  26. Capt. Tim Says:

Nope- he isn’t. He seemed right at home running crossing routes.

Damn! Knew something good had to happen during this season of Ruination!

I like this guy. Let’s see how he does when they are looking for him!

  27. Biff Barker Says:

Pretty ironic that he was lambasted when converted into a TE and after one solid outing he’s back to WR?
Nah, let him stay where he is and let’s hope he can develop that certain chemistry with Glennon. He was converted for a reason.
Paige or Owusu should get the shot in the slot.

  28. Meh Says:

Hey I know, let’s change one of the few things that’s actually working on offense!

  29. Pewter Power Says:

“What a poor job Dom is doing. If we had a decent #3 we wouldn’t even be talking about this. How many teams start multiple games without a tight end?????? If I had been Dom I would have cut Stocker last year. We are woefully thin in every area and GM is supposed to stock the talent but our cupboard is bare!!”

    Exactly, my thoughts as well.

  30. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @SteveK
We won’t have any 10 sack guys on this team as long as they keep dropping into pass coverage
Also, when Mike Williams went down there was NOBODY to step up as a #2. That is entirely on the GM

  31. trusomaroff Says:

This year, last year, the year before. Haha o bucs how I love you

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Nick2 Says
“What a poor job Dom is doing. If we had a decent #3 we wouldn’t even be talking about this.”

Just curious…without cheating and looking it up, who was the other WR when Moss and Carter played for the vikings? My thought is that few teams are lucky enough to have three top-notch WRs starting. I suppose some do and I’m not disagreeing with you.

I just think we are very lucky to have Williams and Jackson. The chances of getting a third that is that good are probably low. I would would love it though.

As to Wright, he had one good outing. He’s covered differently as a TE. Put him as a WR and he may well struggle. We need an Ike there.

  33. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Mr. Patrick Says
“Also, when Mike Williams went down there was NOBODY to step up as a #2. That is entirely on the GM”

There were an awful lot of WRs in camp. It’s not like it wasn’t addressed. Sometimes the harvest is bad and you have to try again with the next crop.

  34. Jeb Buc Says:

I just posted this before. Dom drafted McCoy, spence, clayborn, David, lorig, foster, Martin, Watson, Glennon, Williams, banks and Barron. Better than a LOT of clubs. Look up Baltimore or Green Bay to compare you’ll see. Leave Tim wright where he is, he’s developing well to even casual fans. You guys are nuts. IMO graham will never see the light of day away from New Orleans, so stop that nonsense now.

  35. gotbbucs Says:

Is there a difference between a TE that lines up in th slot and a #3 WR? All our 3rd WR does is play on the outside when they move Jackson to the slot. Wright is a young kid that is still learning the pro game, why mess with his head if what he’s doing is working?

  36. zam Says:

no no no! Why mess with the only thing on the team that worked well last week?

Underwood had to step up to play the #2 position left by Mike Williams being injured, so I don’t think it’s fair to judge his performance as #3.

  37. BucfaninMO Says:

What about getting Kenny Britt? Titans will give him up for nothing and he is a ex-Rutgers player so that makes him more than qualified to for Schiano. He would be a better # 3 then what we have now.
Just an desperate idea for a desperate fan
