I say give him a break, let him show us something this year before we bury him…he’s shown flashes of excellence, but very inconsistent; there was an article a couple weeks ago in the Trib showing that he’s had like 3 head coaches, 4 offensive coordinators and 3 or 4 qb coaches since he started…lets see what he does this year, sink or swim…I predict a great year for him and the Bucs to the playoffs!!

Now Freeman is a failure because he took a phone call interview with other people in the room? Talk about S T R E T C H I N G to bash Freeman. He is way to specific and articulate to be even buzzed. He was obviously distracted by whoever was there or wherever he was.
Even if he was, who cares? It is June. Other than the very obvious haters, no one has ever openly accused Freeman of being a drunk. Unless you think Boomer’s interview from years ago that claimed he “partied too much” is “proof”. He was the only guy to make this accusation. With reporters like Stroud and Shaun King looking for any negative controversy possible it would have been blown out of the water by now if Freeman was drunk as much as some believe.
He certainly sounds relaxed. (Something that I would expect from a person on vacation in June.) It was a great interview. I liked hearing him talk about going against Ronde and Lavonte in practice. Expecting big things from the holder of several franchise records and the leader of a top ten offense.

This is a playoff team. The defense is in place, finally. It is Josh Freeman’s second year in this offense, and it is time to take that next step.
11-5 and off to the playoffs is where we need to be in 2013.
No one is saying Freeman can’t have fun, but we are all, surely, awaiting his 2013 season.
Freeman has the tools in place, the talent surrounding him, and no EXCUSE for anything less than a Wild Card berth.
If we miss the playoffs, we will need answers not questions. The defense is going to answer this year, is the QB?

Rick Stroud is a Hack just like the MAJORITY of reporters sports, news or otherwise. In today’s society anyone with $6.95 Goddady hosting account and a free wordpress install thinks they are journalists.
I am a die hard bucs fan and want my team to be successful. Josh Freeman like it or not is the best chance we have. If for one minute people don’t’ think 10 to 15 other teams would not open their checkbooks for him at his YOUNG age you are crazy…. Maybe he should not resign and head on to Kansas City next y year. I bet they will welcome him with open arms.

Let me get this straight, a top ten offense gets the return of two pro bowl guards with no subtractions and they are a question mark but the second worst pass defense in NFL history gets a player coming off a torn ACL, a free agent safety, a rookie, and two starters coming off injury and they are guaranteed to produce? Really?
The defense is the unit that needs to improve, not the offense.

I think all 3 units need to improve. Our offense by no means was elite last year. Except a 5 game stretch against bad teams. Specifically they need to be able to chew more time off the clock. If we werent scoring it seemed like we were going 3 and out.

Great point. We should be trying to “win” the time of possesion battle each week. More time our offense is holding onto the ball, the less our defense will be tested.

Are we not to judge Josh Freeman by how he regressed towards the end of last year? It was the exclamation mark on an already poor pass D.
Dom and Schaino, worked together for their 2nd draft and offseason, got the pass defense fixed.
Is Freeman mentally up to the challenge of consistently facilitating the Buccaneer offense, and leading this team to the playoffs? I know he has the talent, but does he have the ability to consistently perform well enough for this team to create an identity and win?

Personally, I’m done weighing in on it. I believe in Free, and I believe in Schiano and the direction the team is headed. Nothing anyone on this site says will kill my excitement, this season is going to be great!

with the huge roster turnover on defense as well as their lack of playing time together, I think the defense will struggle for maybe the first 3-4 games. now when I say struggle I dont mean horribly bad, it just wont be to the expectations that we all know is possible. once they get the scheme down and get some playing time together, it should be smooth sailing from there.

I expect miscommunication from the safety and CB for the first few games given the fact that they will play Drew Brees and Tom Brady within the first 3 games. Tom runs consistent no huddle offense and Drew runs a fast pace offense. I can see someone in the wrong spot or expecting someone in one place but no one is the there. After the Bye Week I see them fixing the issues like they did with the offense last year.

WCBF is right. But this is a new year and what happened last year no longer matters, good or bad. I’m tired of all this bickering. I want Freeman to come out and do an excellent job just to shut half the naysayers up (some people will never be happy).
And for once I would like a season with minimal injuries so we can see what our starters are all capable of.
I’m also not sold on the D-line but will withhold judgement until we see how they play together.

The offense was far from perfect but it was good enough. The defense was so bad it dragged the rest of the team down. The offense should improve but it isn’t a necessity to have a winning record. If the defense doesn’t improve then it won’t matter if the offense is number one overall. That is why the defense NEEDS to improve while the offense only “should” improve.
The 2012 season hinges on the improvement of the defense, not the offense.

It is a strange interview especially for Josh who usually gives short canned interview answers. I have a friend who is a close friend with of Josh and he tells me he is a little up and down emotionally confidence wise but not a big drinker. Describes him as a guy that doesn’t party very often and says he has very little free time but when he does he will go out and enjoy himself. This sounds like to me like a morning phone call after one of those nights. To speculate more it also sounded like to me he may have had his girl in the bed next to him trying to mess with him to see if he could muti-task. 😉 This is just a guess as to why this interview came off as so odd as it did. I’ll be rooting for Josh. He is our QB and we all know how great he can be, I can’t think of a year I’ve been more excited about than this one. Go Bucs!

By the way, saying the offense “needs” to improve implies that it wasn’t good enough last year. It was. Seeing as this is a team sport, (makes you wonder with some of the comments here though) the pass defense needs to improve and only the pass defense.
We were 7-9 last year. One more win has us break even and two has us with a shot at the playoffs. Now, with that said, would it be reasonable to say that your top ten offense needs to improve to add those two or three wins or that the second worst pass defense in NFL history needs to improve? Both can and should improve but, I am talking at a bare minimum, which part of the team “needs” to improve to have a shot at the post season?

It’s hard to believe that Josh is only 25 years old. It’s hard to believe he is a four year vet, and where a 25 year old refers to 24 year olds as kids…. lol… It feels to me he should be closer to 30, but he’s a veteran now at only 25, with oodles of experience, and he’s hasn’t even reached his prime yet. I hope Josh has his “Flacco Year”. And then it becomes his decision whether he wants to remain a Buc.

I suppose the number two ranking of the Saints offense “means nothing” as well? Brees and that offense just have to do a better job . . . (How about them Saints by the way? Number two offense nets a 7-9 record, imagine that? What could possibly be the cause there?)
Also, I love how you blindly dismiss facts as “leg humping”. Saying the pass defense was the second worst in NFL history is an “excuse” but requiring a top ten offense to improve is “realistic” and “logical”, I get it now . . .
More consistency from Freeman and the offense would certainly be great. It is expected of the offense to improve under its current conditions. The defense though, if they don’t improve? They will sink another top ten offense and keep us from the playoffs. (This defense would have sunk Tom Brady.) All Freeman has to do is match his 2012 output with an improved defense to reach a winning record. That is all that is “needed” to put us in contention. If Freeman does anything less than match his 2012 output or the defense can’t manage a (reasonable) top twenty overall ranking then playoffs are unlikely, at best.
Please don’t confuse my saying Freeman is “good enough” with Freeman is “perfect”. Freeman can certainly improve in literally every facet of his game. (Some of them MUCH more than others.) All I am saying is that right now, the offense is/was at a level where playoffs are a reasonable expectation. The defense has not this yet. The offense has already shown they are playoff worthy(As in, it had similar output to some playoff offenses and even better then some), now the defense has to show the same thing.

When the defense blows leads like its their job, its not the QBs fault.

The offense NEEDS to improve if we are going to win a super bowl. They don’t NEED to improve to get us into the playoffs. If they produce 24+ pts per game this year we will be in the playoffs….guarantee it. Why? Because the defense is the one that HAD to improve and they did.

9th best in the NFL in 1st quarter scoring
8th best in 3rd quarter scoring
7th best in 4th quarter scoring
(only the 2nd quarter was bad, at 29th)
Exactly in the middle of the league in terms of time of possession at 30:00
12th best scoring offense
8th best red zone TD %
10th best passing yards per game
2nd best passing yards per completion
12th in passing yards per attempt
13th best passing 1st down %
Tied for 6th best in yards per play
I’m sorry we Buccaneer fans had to endure such a thing. And I didn’t even add in how sorry I am for Doug Martin’s production. To think Martin had the 7th most rushing yards and 7th most rushing TDs in the league, I’m really sorry about that.
Now that the sarcasm is over… I’d like to be truly sorry for the defense that produced sacks at the 2nd worst rate in the league, gave up the 2nd most passing yards per attempt, gave up 1st downs through the air at a rate higher than any team in the NFL, and the 2nd worst pass D in almost 100 years of NFL. If we had broken that record, the Bucs would hold two of the most difficult records to break in the NFL. I’d rather not see us come anywhere near either of those records anytime soon.

Josh definitely has some problems with his game but look at the defenses that he has had since he came here.
2009: 27th ranked defense
2010: 17th ranked defense (One game away from playoffs)
2011: 30th ranked defense
2012 29th ranked defense
Give the kid a top 10 defense like the old days and everyone will shut the hell up about running him out of town. It’s hard to win games when you’re down by 21 points by halftime.

Interviews for players are part of the “profession” so it’s part of their responsibility to show up “professional”…

Great post as always BamBamBuc, no matter what the topic is I seem to agree with the same people.
One other thing worth mentioning I read on another Bucs blog about ‘Who’s really to blame’ broke it down 20% Secondary 25% Freeman and 35% Coaching, I forget the rest maybe Dominic, injuries and miscellaneous. But the interesting point was and something I think was not been brought up is how poor the time management, play calling and game day adjustments were. It was mentioned that o-line coach and d-line coached well but overall the coaching staff had a lot of game day improvements to make.

I do thank you, but must say my intent is not to shut anyone up. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if it’s wrong. I actually enjoy looking up the numbers, watching the games again, and then deciding if it’s right or wrong.
For example, I just sat down to watch the beginning of the end, the fall from grace, the first in a series of losses that would eliminate us from the playoffs…. yep, the first Atlanta Falcons game. My purpose watching this time was to see the “flaws” I hear so much about. The throws in the dirt on short passes, the throws requiring acrobatic catches by the WRs, the poor decision making on throws to covered WRs, etc.
Watching again, the first thing I noticed was there were no throws at the feet, in the ground, on short passes. Not every pass was “in stride”, but not every pass could be, as there were defenders in the path if the throw were there. But every throw was very catchable. One, in the 4th quarter on 3rd down, was absolutely in the hands of Underwood and dropped. What would have been a 1st down to keep a drive alive became a FG and a 6 point lead. What a difference a 10 point lead would have been, could have meant a win there.
Now, Freeman was not perfect in this game, not by any means. His first half was very good (5 of 6 for 81 yards). There was one acrobatic catch by VJ. And it was a perfect pass by Freeman. He dropped it in over the CB, under the FS, letting VJ go up for the ball on a beautiful catch. Couldn’t have put it anywhere else. He did miss a wide open Mike Williams down the right sideline that would have been an easy TD. The ball sailed high and out of bounds. He also missed a wide open Vincent Jackson and instead overthrew the ball out of the end zone in Underwood’s direction. He obviously never saw VJ on the play, whether his view was blocked by defenders, or he already moved past that read. He had another pass that never should have been thrown into tight coverage that should have been intercepted, but ended up incomplete. Another “almost intereception” came when he was hit as he threw, I can’t really fault him for the ball coming out the way it did on that pass. Otherwise, a respectable game from Freeman. Not spectacular, but pretty decent (19 of 30 for 256).
Of course, how can I watch a game without seeing the defensive play too. And here’s where I have a problem. Atlanta had the ball 4 times in the first half. On 3 of those 4 drives they easily moved the ball down the field and scored (or should have, the last drive they missed a chip shot FG to end the half). The other drive was a great read and INT by Barber. The first drive of the 2nd half wasn’t much of a drive at all. One play, 80 yards, TD Ryan to Jones. So, Atlanta should have scored on 4 of their first 5 possessions. After two good defensive series (including a brilliant blitz, sack, forced fumble by Biggers that led to a FG to take the lead) we give up two drives leading to a TD and another missed FG to lose the game. Atlanta scored (or should have scored) on 6 of 9 possessions that game. The game was close because Matt Bryant was not doing well, our D actually got 2 turnovers and the offense scored on 5 of 9 possessions (also missed a long FG and a hail mary pass to end 2 of the 9). Our defense allowed Matt Ryan to go 26 of 32 for 353 yards. You don’t win many games when you let the opposing QB complete over 75% of his passes, over 300 yards in a game… it just doesn’t happen. Freeman and the offense had a decent day and I didn’t see any of these “inconsistency” issues I keep hearing about. Just a few isolated plays. Yeah, making every play Freeman could have won the game for us, but even Matt Ryan didn’t make every play and that’s against our porous secondary.
I’ll be watching more games from the horrible slide to see if I see these “low throws”, “short pass issues”, etc.

Well, genius, if his play was that brilliant why did Schiano draft another QB? Answer? Because his play is inconsistent.

Nobody has claimed that Josh has not played inconsistent at times. Maybe they drafted another QB was because they wanted a competent backup QB on the roster and getting a veteran was too costly. That’s what the GM and Coach are saying.

I didn’t even bother reading the posts since I knew ahead of time that if the subject is our quarterback, they would quickly digress to 7th grade banter. After scrolling up and reading WCBF’s last remarks, sadly I was right in my precognition. After listening to this Josh Freeman interview my take is that people are trying to make something out of nothing. Josh was trying to give the hosts his honest responses on a variety of topics and not just give the standard two word cliches. Somehow in trying to do that while thinking about what he was saying, people equate that with being incapacitated. Wow, what a stretch that is. Perhaps Josh should take a few lessons on doing interviews from the Unibomber look alike in New England who speaks without saying anything.

This whole Freeman thing makes me laugh. Its like a psychology experiment. Is the glass half empty or half full? Technically both are right. The haters remember the bad times (half empty)and the lovers remember the good times (half full). Is free inconsistent? Yes of course. The heaters are tired of getting their hopes up just to be crushed. The lovers still have faith from his flashes of brilliance. I personally still have faith. New Shiano Order is a great staff and will bring it out of him. And the haters are correct too in saying this is make or break year for free. But one things for sure. By middle of October we will all know who is right

So, Josh cannot have a life outside of football? I’m critical of his play on the field, but off the field, in the offseason, and he wants to go out and have a few drinks, why the hell not? Is he going out every night causing trouble in the club? No.
If he had a drinking problem, no way would he have lost 20 lbs and gotten cut and trim the way he did. Alcohol and exercise doesn’t produce those types of results. So quit the alcoholic/drinking problem talk.

Um…if you want to replace your starter you do it in the first round. Schiano drafted a quarterback to replace Dan-O. Third round is backup quality in most cases.

This is the first time I think we are actually getting JF5 the way his friends know him. He calls people “kids” but he is more or less a “kid” himself. : ) This might be my favorite interview of Josh Freeman. Also, I am on board for the distraction idea also. He was at the Storm game on 6/22 with a gorgeous girl. More power to him. : P

Obviously Josh is a crack addict and McCoy is losing weight from meth amphetamine. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional. I could hear the pipe being lit in the background. I also thought I heard someone say “Do you want the red pill or the blue pill Josho?” It was kind of fuzzy but clear if you slow the audio down and play it backwards at 1:24.

The other possibility is his snake was talking to him and distracting him. If you listen real close at about 3:21 you can hear “Drop the mouse Julio!!”
