Ice May Be Thinning For Jeff Faine

March 12th, 2012

Evan Silva of ProFootballTalk.com writes moments ago that fans should look for Jeff Faine to be released in the coming hours.

Sports director David Pingalore of the Orlando CBS-TV affiliate is Tweeting that the Bucs center/captain/busy entrepreneur will be released today.

Joe’s heard all this may be inaccurate. So stay tuned.

However, once before Faine believed he was wronged by the media and sent an open letter to the St. Pete Times. So perhaps a statement from Faine is forthcoming.

If Faine is gone, Joe knows he won’t be eating Saltines and anchovies.

This would save us about $8 mil in cap space and open the door for Nicks + possibly two more top tier FAs. See ya Faine!

  2. SensibleBuc Says:

…but wasn’t there a post a few days ago about Faine being in the team’s 2012 plans :/

  3. raphael Says:

Hello major spending spree ! hold on folks , this could get a little awesome here …

  4. Bobby Says:

I’ll believe this when I see it. It makes sense and it SHOULD happen but this article is all conjecture with no basis in fact.

  5. Matthew Says:

This directly has to do with Nicks. If they are making a run at CB/WR, this extra space allows us to back the Brinks truck up to Nick’s house.

  6. knucknbuc Says:

Yes yes yea! Please let this be true get rid of this overpriced old and often injured bum. I didn’t like when we signed him 3 years ago to that contract and still don’t like how much we pay him. Zuttah was always better then him at center anyways. This opens us to get any combination of vjax, Finnegan, nicks, tulloch or lofton. Then add depth. Dom make this move now!

  7. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Bobby – There’s plenty of fact here. Two legitimate media members are claiming Faine is about to be told to hit the streets.

  8. GenocideD Says:

Pardon my possible ignorance here but why would we cut Faine before knowing whether we’ve got Nicks locked up??? Wouldn’t we lock up a replacement for LG/C and THEN cut Faine?? Having a backfill is a lot more important to the team than freeing up money to upgrade another position, IMO.

  9. knucknbuc Says:

Stephen holder tweeted that the bucs plan to start zuttah at center. U don’t pay a backup 8 mil per. Jeff Faine being released to me is all but a done deal at this point thank god. We wont even need to get a backup c neither bec ted Larsen can play c in a pinch. Dom should be on the phone saying nicks do u want this in cash or check?

  10. T in Orlando Says:

Just heard Mike Tolbert on Sirius Radio (NFL Blitz) and when talking to Schein and Gannon about potential landing spots, Tolbert twice voluntarily mentioned Tampa as possibility.

That would be great. Less one Faine, and Plus one Nicks, and a Jackson (or even Garcon) and all of a sudden this offense looks a lot different.

  11. Architek Says:

I am so excited to see him gone…

  12. raphael Says:

I’m sure teams are not SUPPOSED [wink wink] to be working on deals already…..

  13. FlBoy84 Says:

Would be ironic if the team does release Faine, as he was just quoted the other day stating the team told him he was “in their plans” for this year. Evidently he missed the “to clear salary cap space” part of that sentence. lol He still has a few years left in him, sure he will be picked up somewhere if this turns out to be true.

@GenocideD, there are a few other quality LG’s and C’s available not named Nicks that can signed. If the team were to make this move today or tomm., you’d have to figure that were confident they’d be able to land a quality addition to the line. And it helps out Faine to be available at the start of FA, rather than putting him out there after teams had already filled their C position.

  14. FlBoy84 Says:

    *that they were

If you read the article the reporter says “I think” … Dont get caught in the trap of reading these “Opinion displayed as Fact articles”

  17. Bobby Says:

@ Joe…I know Joe but they don’t have any basis for the article other than conjecture. They don’t have any quoted sources and until they have someone from One Buc come out and say it then it’s really all just a ‘maybe’ Faine gets released. I agree that it’s a ‘fact’ that it was reported but it’s not a ‘fact’ that it’s gonna happen.

  18. FlBoy84 Says:

@jvato, that would be about 90% of the articles published daily. lol

  19. J 2.0 Says:

“Pardon my possible ignorance here but why would we cut Faine before knowing whether we’ve got Nicks locked up???”

Well, we kind of signed Faine literally at 12:01 am that year so who knows?

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

This just makes entirely too much sense to be true, but I sure hope it is. It is also rumored that all NFL teams have been tampering, which could signal that Nicks is already a done deal.

  21. Nick Says:

This guy is a bad example for young players, please get rid of him, give him more time for his day job. Jeremy Zuttah is just as strong and much more athletic, and the Saints guard would be our best player and taken from the division! What a bonus !

    Nick

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

Fainey sucks, always has, always will. Clear some cap and take your brothers Quincy and Geno witcha.

  23. gotbbucs Says:

There really is no point in keeping him around. He’s got so many things working against him. He’s injury prone, he’s small for a power running scheme team, he’s getting old, his backup outperformed him when he was injured, and his salary far exceeds his output.

    It’s a no brainer.

  24. Fernando Says:

    1. Zuttah outplayed him at Center last year.
    2. He’s not the same since the injuries.
    3. Welcome to Tampa Mr.Nicks!!!!!

  25. Bucsfan47 Says:

Get Nicks, Vjax, Tulloch, Finnegan. Draft Richardson in round 1, Safety in Round 2……Wonder if we could afford all those free agents. Faine frees up qutie a bit of cap room plus what we already have.

  26. BucFan20 Says:

I love to just sit back and watch all the reaction to every story! Does this mean like (some 2 faced fans) , Your in our plans for 2012. Only to turn the other face and and say This is 2012 and our plans were to release you!!

And of course everyone jumps as soon as it hits. BUT. Exactly who was it that reported that our new HC was going to be? Every news outlet in the US and blod site. Only that did not happen did it?? Just like you will now have a fit over the next one.. Lumpkin Staying!!!

  27. BucFan20 Says:

    ^ blog site.

  28. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

Teams can’t talk to players but they can talk to their agents, right? I’m sure many deals gave already been made. Buh-bye faine, take your graphic tees with you.

  29. Steve from Oregon Says:

As good as Nicks is, im would rather see Grubbs…..would could get him cheaper and his play is outstanding.

  30. Pete Dutcher Says:

I don’t buy it. Joe, how can you tell a poster there is plenty of fact when in the article you say it might be inaccurate?

If this happens, it doesn’t mean Zuttah is being moved to center or that Nicks is coming. It means the Bucs have something planned, but it could mean a draft scenario.

  31. gotbbucs Says:

    @ FIRETHECANNONS

Judging by the way Goodell is running business lately, I don’t think I’d mess around too much before the clock goes off on FA.

  32. Teacherman777 Says:

He had a decent year last year.

but if we CAN upgrade by signing Nicks.

Then we gotta pull the trigger.

I like Jeff Faine. He played hard all the time. He was a good leader.

Best of luck JEFF!! A real Buc!! A tattoed up PIRATE OG!!

  33. BigMacAttack Says:

Pete, lay off the Thomas pills and find a woman……. fast.

  34. deminion Says:

    Go get Nicks or Grubbs

  35. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @BigMacAttack
    I have a woman.

And I resent that remark…just because I suggested it might be something other than Nicks? Or that this report might be bogus?
