Two Ben Bredeson Blocks Lead To One Big Run

October 9th, 2026

Old school fundamentals work.

All you guys who played youth football or high school football, if your coach(es) were worth a grain of salt, what did they tell you?

“Play to the whistle.” Right?

(Joe’s grade school coach occasionally wouldn’t use his whistle to blow a play dead. On purpose. If players stopped, thinking the play was over, he’d holler, “I didn’t hear a whistle!” and everyone had to blast someone on the other side of the ball and keep blasting till he blew that whistle.)

Joe was reminded of that experience watching the video of Bucky Irving’s 72-yard run.

Watch Bucs left guard Ben Bredeson. At the snap, Bredeson’s man was Dallas defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. Bredeson gave Bucky a crease to run through. Play over, right? Bredeson did his job, right?

No.

Bredeson, as if Joe’s grade school coach hollered, “I didn’t hear a whistle!” stayed with Williams and kept pushing and kept pushing and all of a sudden, Bucky cuts inside and there is Bredeson still blocking Williams.

Bucky cuts back past Bredeson (and Williams) and then the field opened for Bucky and he was on his way.

Just good, old school physical fundamentals there by Bredeson. Joe could argue that solid block and hustle and determination to stay with Williams may have won the game for the Bucs as Bucky’s run led to a touchdown.

The Bucs won a one-score game.

Little things always add up to big things.

Looking at it, I saw an incidental jersey pull that with today’s day and age could have easily been called a hold. It would have been very tricky tacky so I’m glad it wasn’t. Not to be a Debbie downer, it’s an awesome job by Bredeson. I’m glad you’re giving him some praise after the up and down performance and perception he has.

  2. Todd Says:

Quinnen Williams woke up this morning, checked under his bed, and found Ben Bredeson still blocking him.

If Bredeson keeps blocking like that, Bucky’s going to have to list him as a dependent on his tax return.

    Don’t forget 88 doing his thang there…

    Nice call out Joe.

bucky sure can run…eyes behind his head…

great final cutback move to gain a few more

Bredeson is still the weak link in the OL chain, dude racked up some penalty yards last night but a win is a win and Bredeson did help free Bucky on the big run. Props to him.

I am glad the Bucs won but I have more issues with Bowles time management and that idiotic 4th down decision like he was trying to give Dallas a back door win. This is still a common theme, lucky for Bowles, Dallas coaching staff managed to out-dumb Todd. Jerry Jones might launch their DC after that embarrassing loss.

  8. RJ Says:

He also had 3 false start penalties. One of which stalled out a drive. He’s a veteran NFL guard. That’s inexcusable.

  9. Scott Says:

I’m glad you noticed that Joe because all I noticed from him was penalty after penalty and getting beat

    1.) Hilarious

2.) Ben needs to stop jumping the snap or at least get better at cheating the snap.

  11. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Yeah, but he also had two holding penalties and a false start. Clean that up and improve as it hurt drives.

    Agree with both.

It was a great funny comment

And the O-line as a whole needs to stop with all the penalties.

    BINGO!!!!

    he should be our Center

but great play and great win

    GO BUCS!!!!!

Agreed, but in spite of all of that Bucs win, bucs win, bucs win.

Everybody is giving up hindsight solutions to the 4th and goal.
I could see it mattering more if we lost, but we still got the win.

Outside of that following drive and the first Cowboys offensive drive of the game we made them work last night and that’s what you want from your D, everything else if style points.

Again, 37-34-34 is how many points Dallas posted before in their last 3 games before last nights game. We allowed 16 points to the #2 offense in the league who’ll still be top 5-7 in terms of points scored after this game. That means a little something.

  15. IMBUC Says:

PAYNE DURHAM didn’t get the memo, though. Whiffed twice on easy blocks on #13, then flat-out stopped playing, then #13 ended up catching Bucky and pushing him out of bounds. Would have been a touchdown if PD played until the whistle or actually blocked someone.

We (NFL) are becoming the next reality show. And we all know that those are staged as well.

    All about the $.

  19. PowerOfPewter Says:

It was a good win, Bucky was phenomenal, Daniels did very well. The OLine still needs to clean up their game. Of the 14 (!) penalties called on the Bucs, 10 were on offense, and 9 were on the OLine. Bredeson had 2 holding calls and a false start. Goedeke had 2 holding calls, Barton, Otton, and Bauer Sharp had 1 holding call each. Wirfs had a False Start, and the entire offense got a Delay of Game. I think the Defense only had 2 penalties the entire game, and STs had 2.

  20. OurYear Says:

@ IMBuc ⬆️, and thn Durham had 2 great seal blocks allowing Bucky to score a TD and then get to the 1 yard line.

  21. OurYear Says:

@ Powerof Pewter ⬆️, Ottons penalty was procedure, not holding.

  22. unbelievable Says:

    Good blocks for sure.

Now if he could just stop getting 2-4 penalties PER GAME!!! this team might have a shot at racking up some more wins.

  23. Show Me Your TDs Says:

So true, Joe, and a great example.

  24. Bosch Says:

I love how Bucky gained an additional 10 yards by cutting inside in stead of just running out of bounds.

Best game of Bucky ‘s career. Many more to come. He has proved he can put the team on his back.

  25. LANshark Says:

Interesting… looking deeper at that play, Mauch COMPLETELY WHIFFED on his block, then actually blocked Otten for a 1 count, before Otten got free and was able to make another block to spring Bucky…

That is NOT an o-line operating efficiently.

  26. Daniel Says:

Bredeson was awful last night minus this 1 play.
