Is A Side Switch Imminent For Rueben Bain?

August 30th, 2026

Interesting chatter about the Bucs working around the injured shoulder of Miami Mauler edge rusher Rueben Bain.

Yes, Bain sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder on Tuesday during a practice with the Jaguars, per various reports. Joe cautions all fans to realize the Bucs are not obligated to issue an official injury report until four days prior to their first real game. So what’s real or not is unclear.

Is Bain’s shoulder a big deal? That’s unclear. Joe has heard ex-NFL players say every NFL defensive lineman dings up his AC joint every year. Nothing to worry about.

On Movin’ The Chains, the premier show on SiriusXM NFL Radio, co-host Pat Kirwan noted the Bucs could move Bain to the right side of the defensive front in order to protect his shoulder earlier in the season. Playing Bain on his usual left side would mean more usage for the dinged up right shoulder — ripping, clubbing, etc. Kirwan is a former linebackers coach, Bucs scout and Jets personnel director.

Bain played on both sides of the line in college, though he’s largely been a fixture on the left side in Bucs practices.

Something to keep an eye on. Joe would worry more about YaYa Diaby’s production if he and Bain had to switch positions for a game or two.

Good pass rushers get to the QB no matter what side they’re on. If you’re worried about YaYa on the left side, maybe he’s not worth a big contract extension?

  2. Bosch Says:

    Just put Yaya in coverage.

  3. Jp1979 Says:

I’m not understanding this pay Yaya all this money . He’s a good pass rusher but some people like pewter report want to pay him 25- 30 million a year. For what if bain is as good as we all think then another good olb will work just as good no need to pay Yaya for bain production. Imo

He’s young and will heal quickly
We don’t know the degree and category of the diagnosis
Harness him up and play sparingly until he is healthy
Key is not reinsuring the AC that is a risk not worth taking before the season begins.
I would consider not playing the ROOKIE in the first game risk vs reward.

  5. Todd Says:

If shoulder preservation through geographical relocation works, the next concussion protocol is gonna involve changing time zones.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

With the Buc’s current CB unit R. Bain will need to get @ 20 sacks for us to win more than 7 games…

    No pressure Rubin.

    You are our only hope…

    7-10.

    Accept the mediocrity.

  7. Guzzie55 Says:

Yaya can a ALMOST get there just fine from each side

    Pony up or shut TFU.

You’re just an idiot troll with no clue about football.

Why do you have to insult me and be so mean and nasty?

That’s not very nice of you.

I believe insults are the lowest form of debate…

Why do you believe this team will win more than 7 games?

Let’s start with that instead of slinging mud at one another.

    @ Fan

I believe this roster is paper thin and is showing severe signs of total collapse…

I also believed that if it wasn’t for Tom Brady – this whole franchise would have been “turned over” by now.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Fan

I believe we have a below mediocre GM and Head Coach…

I believe we need a whole new direction with a whole new regime stealing this ship.

Plus – our QB will never lead us to a SB victory.

    EVER.

Observation of a certain commenter above:

Ad hominem: the intellectual equivalent of flipping the Monopoly board because you’re losing. “You’re an idiot” remains undefeated as the official closing statement of people who have nothing left to say.

An ad hom doesn’t strengthen your point. It just puts a neon sign over the exact moment you stopped having one.

Just an observation, but maybe constantly insulting the
team, it’s leaders and player feels personal to some of us

Folks could see the rot at the end of 2024
Remember the 3 last minute come from behind wins last year that were actually big fat losses just waiting for the clock to expire.
Remember the gangrene ending to the end of 2025 … same HC
Remember the Bucs getting beat every which way in Jacksonville a few days ago.

I agree that there is obvious concern with CB and I don’t have faith in Bowles. As for Baker, I can see him winning a SB but he, like many SB winning QBs, needs a lot of support: good HC, good OC, offensive pieces and a strong defense. Even with all that teams will lose. I don’t see us having all those item to even get to the NFC championship game.

Bottom line: I can see your 7-10 as a possibility and at best 10/11 wins with luck as the ceiling. I’d rather have low expectations and not be disappointed.

  16. Erik with Clean Athletics™ Says:

This is stupid. If Bain is too injured to be effective, sit him until he’s healthy enough to go.

Play Mohammed or Walker on the left side til Bain’s ready.

  17. El Hefe Bucc Says:

The reason you pay yaya because he can get to the an he is just in coverage more than often check the tapes idots yaya could be great if you let him do his job smh

  18. Justin Says:

This board is going to be great to read when Bowles starts dropping Bain into coverage (like he did with Hassan Reddick) last year.

Watch his cut-ups from the Chiefs game. It’s already started.

    Well said.

It’s really something that people actually EXPECT the “Passionate Fans” to stick their heads in the sand and pretend…

Demanding FAR BETTER “IS” SUPPORTING THE TEAM “AND THE FAN”!

When Did some take SO MUCH magic medicine that they’ve Conveniently Gone Blank on what sounds like it DID NOT end a short 7 months ago? And STARTED a YEAR AGO? And Sure sounds like it Continues right now!

Try to remember because IT’S SO VERY IMPORTANT and SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO AND ABOUT “THE FAITHFUL”… The TEAM DID QUIT ON bOWLES AFTER ALL! The fans didn’t do that! NO! But We ARE ALL SUFFERING BECAUSE OF IT!

And to be PERFECTLY FRANK, we’re just hearing and seeing the Very Same ALREADY and it’s Only PRE SEASON!

O, and btw, why don’t you “try” telling everybody what went right?

Maybe you won’t look so desperate… I didn’t watch the last pre season (sounds like embarrassment) “bad look, bad sound” game and THE “I don’t want to play” attitudes from the players JUST LIKE last year….
But I can’t really speak to it personally. I didn’t see the game. ONLY WHAT I’M HEARING and READING. So please, I’d Appreciate some encouragement. What went right? What was the Best part? I haven’t heard A WORD about THAT!
