Jon Gruden Promises Baker Mayfield, Bucs “Are Not Very Far Away” In Contract Talks
August 24th, 2026
After being immersed in all things Buccaneers last week because he was calling the Bucs-Chiefs preseason game for WFLA-TV, Jon Gruden walked away with very strong impressions on the Baker Mayfield contract front.
Mayfield is in line to be a free agent after this season. The Bucs showed him a contract for 2027 and 2028 and Mayfield balked publicly at the compensation and the length of the deal.
Mayfield also said he was finished talking about a new contract; talk to him after the season, he said.
Gruden, however, promised fans today that the Mafyield and Bucs camps are not far apart.
Here was the exchange during The Drive on 95.7 FM WDAE radio, (where the JoeBucsFan Show airs on Saturday and a new JoeBucsFan Show will soon be announced).
“Is it possible that the Buccaneers make a last-ditch effort to maybe re-open talks to try and get a deal done with Baker before the [Week 1] opener?” Gruden was asked by host Tom Krasniqi.
“I can’t speak like I have any inside scoop but I will promise you this: they are not very far away,” Gruden replied.
“And I would assure Buccaneers fans this is no distraction for Baker Mayfield whatsoever. This guy is on the rock, man, he is on the bulls-eye. This guy is really focused, dead set on winning here with Tampa Bay. But I do have a lot of confidence in Jason Licht, the Glazers, I think everybody, every party included wants to get this done.
“And I think they’re a lot closer than people realize. But I would expect it to get done, indeed.”
Feel free to speculate. Gruden is known for dodging questions, so why did he twice strongly imply the Mayfield and Bucs camps are close?
And keep in mind Gruden and Licht have a strong relationship. They’ve shared the same agent for years. So it’s not like Gruden is trying to put undue pressure on Licht because of a secret beef.
Very intriguing answer from Gruden after all the time he spent with the team last week, including a Thursday sitdown with Todd Bowles.

The Baker haters will not love this. Why don’t you geniuses provide us with realistic QB suggestions for 2027? By realistic I mean a player that’s available for less than 50 million per year and has won a super bowl.
August 24th, 2026 at 3:56 pm
That would be great if that happens
August 24th, 2026 at 4:01 pm
Baker is the best option we have at QB by far. We are not going to have another Tom Brady come waltzing in during FA. If we can give Baker a good defense, he can easily win a SB, if Hurtz and Darnold can. The Bucs have never drafted a franchise QB, why would we now? And even the floor for this team won’t have us drafting in the top 10 this year.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:02 pm
The Bucs are all in Daniels, that’s why they gave Vita a new deal first. Licht is already spending that $54M he’s going save with Baker not here. They’ve seen practice, they’ve seen who the best QB in camp has been, and that’s why they shut down negotiations.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:07 pm
Rod, you have to be kidding. Daniels is a UDFA and you are basing his skill level in a few preseason games against third and fourth string players that will soon be dropped from their respective teams?
August 24th, 2026 at 4:13 pm
My offer to proof read is still on the table. Thx
August 24th, 2026 at 4:16 pm
Congratulations on the Pending radio spot gig. Us Buc fans can’t get enough of Buc Talk. Thank God the season is upon us. WNBA is hard to watch.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:17 pm
Well I’m in the sign him camp, and we need to make sure Munchs man makes the 53 first ,, but as to your Criteria , under 50 million and won a Super Bowl,, I guess that’s Flacco , Drew Lock , Carson Wentz , that’s about all I can think of that are under 50 Million and have a ring ,, that said maybe offer Baker 4 years 45 a year , 3 gaur. Perhaps he would bite and we would save 10
August 24th, 2026 at 4:18 pm
Bwahahaha! Yeah right. Like I said earlier, Baker and Daniels are on a completely different galaxy when it comes to talent.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:18 pm
Rod you’re ridiculous sometimes…this is one of those times.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:20 pm
Peyton manning and tom Brady are available. Other than that, we sign Baker.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:25 pm
I’ll believe it when I see it.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:29 pm
Rod Munch should run for office. He’d fit in great with current non-sensible cast. Dumping a talented but imperfect (in his eyes) QB for an UDFA (no matter how good he looks in brief appearances in pre-season games shows his willingness to speak ridiculous comments as long as they support his key belief.
Guys like Sam Darnold and our own QB in our first SB win shows that a mid level QB can take a talented team to a SB win.
I like what I see so far in JD, but to divine what management thinks is really stupid for a guy who posts like he is some sort of oracle.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:37 pm
Baker would be a complete fool not taking the offer. One in the hand Baker, know that old saying?
August 24th, 2026 at 4:37 pm
I do believe an 11th hour deal will get done.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:49 pm
Either way, BM6 will do the best he’s capable of given the surrounding circumstances. It would be a positive for the team to get a deal done sooner than later.

Pump the brakes and put down the crackpipe. Daniels is pretty far from being a franchise QB who can lead a team to the playoffs. He was a UDFA for a reason. They’re working with him to iron out his deficiencies, and he’s obviously got some real talent… Maybe one day he will become a starter for us, but not for a couple years, at least.
August 24th, 2026 at 4:55 pm
I like Gruden but I’m not sure what makes him think that. We could all be less than 5 months away from seeing the entire coaching staff fired, and Licht isn’t a lock to stay if this team goes through another bad year.
To pay Mayfield requires Glazers to sign off and on $150M+ in new money going out. Why would they do that now with such a short time to go before a major in-house purge might happen?
August 24th, 2026 at 4:56 pm
I hope Gruden is speaking from an informed perspective and not just speaking out of his bunghole.

Put the beer down, Rod. You’re not making any sense.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:13 pm
BucsFan2023 … ‘By realistic I mean a player that’s available for less than 50 million per year and has won a super bowl.’
By setting that as your criteria, you’ve essentially set the floor for what you see that Baker is worth:
1 – Available.
2 – Salary less than $50 mil per year.
3 – Won a Super Bowl.
Well, Baker will meet one of those 3 criteria when 2026 is finished … he’ll be available (unless we franchise tag him). But apparently he wants north of $50 mil for multiple years, and to my knowledge, he has yet to win a Super Bowl.
Looks like Mahomes, Stafford, Hurts, Rodgers & Darnold are the only 5 active starting QBs who have won a Super Bowl, and they’re locked in to multi-year deals with their teams (Flacco’s won one, but he’s a backup and Wilson has retired). So we’re not getting any of them. interestingly of those 5, the QB making the least (Darnold) is the one who won the latest Super Bowl. Why? Because the TEAM around him was obviously the best, not because of Sam’s QB prowess (Seattle ran more than they passed for a reason).
And that’s what the Bucs are trying to build it looks like: a TEAM that’s strong in all position groups on offense, defense AND S/Ts. Even though the salary CAP has ballooned to slightly over $300 mil now, there are still 53 mouths to feed, and if 1 of those takes 17-20% the TEAM ends up sacrificing talent in other places (especially in depth). That’s not a prescription for winning the next Super Bowl. Tom Brady understood that well, and that allowed him to earn the title GOAT.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:16 pm
49 years ago everybody was just as high on Randy Hedberg as they are on Jalen Daniels right now
WHY NOT MINOT!
August 24th, 2026 at 5:17 pm
Possibly during the long 10 day or so stretch after preseason game # 3 and the opening day game vs Bengals.
I have mixed feelings at this point. Not sure I’m leaning one way or another and I like Mayfield ( but not a Baker Boi…I’m more of a Buc Fan Boi ). Would it be good long term? Who knows.
Baker may be steely and all…but if/when the team flounders ( as they have every year at some point under Bowles)…will the pressure make diamonds or bust pipes? My money is on needing a plumber. In fairness…Baker did save Bowles job in the 2023 season…and was instrumental in getting Horned Up Canales & Duuuvalll Coen head coaching jobs. So there’s that .

The Glazers are a lot of things but content to lose isn’t one of them. I wouldn’t assume the safety of anyone if the team goes belly up this season. Not even Licht – assuming his draft picks, ‘franchise qb’ and chosen head coach lay an egg two straight seasons. Aside from 2 seasons with Brady and one with Mayfield this team has done very little else in his 12 seasons as GM.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:21 pm
This exact same article has been posted dozens of times on this site. Really?? Jon Gruden has never said this before after a week hanging out with the Bucs. –Joe
Then a few days later they’re far apart in talks again. Nothing burger.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:23 pm
Of course, they were FREAKING CLOSE. Chucky is saying NOTHING that everyone doesn’t ALREADY KNOW. Hell, the Bucs offered HIM at least $105-$110 MILLION (2-years worth, according to what was disclosed last week by T-Krass on WDAE… He said “within the top-5 range,” so it has to beat least that much)… $53-$55-MILLION+ PER YEAR. He said, “NOPE.” So, I mean, how much further COULD THEY be apart with that HUGE of an offer. Baker is a MORON. He’s STUPID. The Bucs should absolutely 💯 pull that offer, at least for right now. The Bucs were extremely LUCKY that he refused it! Don’t go screwing it all up NOW. Geez. That would be SO IDIOTIC, just on soooo many levels. They got their OUT and were SAVED. So, Good Lord… Savor It. As soon as Baker struggles to open the season, the FANS are going to be going NUTS for Daniels, anyway… The FO should use it as more leverage. Baker will sh!t a BRICK (along with his “adult” bros)… And, that why I believe that Bowles will risk LOSING Daniels, just in order to protect and spare BAKER’s ego. He just BETTER NOT.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:24 pm
Guys, Rodney is quite obviously trolling. Pay him no mind.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:24 pm
Intriguing insight indeed
August 24th, 2026 at 5:30 pm
It’s just shows the amount of total absurdity of the BAKER EGO… To walk in there like that, and to just EXPECT for them to completely SCRAP his current deal for THIS season, and to then hand HIM a brand new 3-4 YEAR DEAL, at TOP-5ish QB-MONEY, after a 3-8 record in his last 11-games, and given HIS OWN level of play. It’s ridiculous. Pathetic. I mean, they were willing to give HIM a GIFT. They really dodged a bullet. Just take the WIN, and then SHUT UP. That’s what I’d do. Though, I NEVER would’ve offered him anything EVEN CLOSE to what they did. SHEW.
August 24th, 2026 at 5:42 pm
And, then he goes out publicly, trying to use all that Franchise-BS. “Well, you said I was the Franchise, that I’m a Franchise-QB, I thought I was THE FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK, you said… Bla, Bla, Fricken BLAH.” I’m a FRANCHISE LoL. Despicable.

August 24th, 2026 at 6:12 pm
They were “not very far away” when the Bucs reportedly offered over $100M for a 2 year extension….
And Baker said it was an insult….
When in fact – what’s insulting is SAYING that an offer of over $100M for 2 seasons of playing football is an insult….
Mayfield was just doing what his agent told him to do. Stir the pot – Draw attention from talking heads – put some pressure on the Bucs to try (harder) to get a deal done….
At least Jason didn’t cave and give away too much under such artificially created ‘pressure’……
Everyone knows roughly where this will end up – so I don’t see why both sides have to posture and hold their ground so firmly – at the expense of reaching an agreement – that both sides very much want……
A 2 year extension keeps Mayfield under contract for the next 3 years and I’m quite sure (at minimum) that the Bucs offered at least half the full amount in guarantees ($52-$55M).
So over the next 3 years in that scenario- Baker would average over $50M per year – and 2 of the 3 years would be fully guaranteed.
That’s almost certainly where it sits – and Baker is still holding out for more….
Likely wanting either a 3rd year for the extension with some additional guarantees (Which I do NOT think the Bucs will ever agree to) – OR at least he wants probably half of that last year guaranteed on a 2 year extension.
Maybe the Bucs could meet him half way in that regard and guarantee $12-15M or so of 2028 and get this thing DONE. We shall see….
August 24th, 2026 at 6:20 pm
@ Defense Rules
Obviously I was being sarcastic with the criteria I proposed. The point is there are those that constantly find fault with Baker but expect the Bucs to get a proven winner in a new QB or a first round top 5 draft pick. It’s not that easy.
Sam Darnold was a forgotten player that came to Seattle as a back up. The Bucs don’t need Superman for a QB. They need a sold O line, a great defense and a mid level QB. That’s all Seattle needed.
August 24th, 2026 at 6:20 pm
Mayfields contract will be three years $173 million. That would bring him to four years $51 million a year through 2029. That is just a guess though!
August 24th, 2026 at 6:27 pm
Go back and check the timeline of events…
The Bucs offer to Baker came BEFORE camp started.
Baker then rebuffed that offer, which is what you typically do in negotiations, knowing that was just a starting point, and they’d continue talking.
But then camp started, and the Bucs quickly realized they may have their QB of the future – AND have him on a super cheap contract for 4-years. They slow played responding to Baker, in fact they played it so slow that Baker came back with another offer, that the Bucs also ignored. Why? Because they saw in camp who the best QB on the practice field was, and it wasn’t Baker. In fact the Bucs have become so comfortable with Daniels as their future, they went ahead and spent a bunch of money that was originally going to Baker, instead they decided to pay Vita.
It’s pretty clear what has happened, and Baker might have cost himself a hundred million dollars or more by not taking that first offer.
Sure, the Bucs, for now, will keep starting Baker since they want to get Daniels more reps – but clearly they’re grooming him for the future, and getting ready to jettison Baker.

I just read Rueben Bain is the highest rated rookie per PFF. They loved that hump move!
August 24th, 2026 at 6:30 pm
And you’re smoking some good stuff Rod. Baker turned down the offer. There’s no proof he counter-offered.
August 24th, 2026 at 6:31 pm
Really can’t believe this Vea/Mayfield drama have Bucs fans so riled up! Most of us here are men (probably older) and we’ve been through this before. Lynch went on to have great success, but against his doctor’s orders. Licht has not only had success drafting, but he’s taken care of players past their prime. Not much else you could ask from a GM. He has made some mistakes, but most were early on in his career. More recently I’d say get off this nice guy BS, but in general he’s done a great job of keeping us competitive.
August 24th, 2026 at 6:42 pm
It’s funny ,, you pay attention to the national media , it seems in coaching circles / Gm circles , team circles , Baker is highly thought of , same w media ,, the place that seems to have little or no regard for Baker is this message board.
I mean some think that we should start an UDFA ,, and if we start Daniels we may just have a chance!!!!!
The worst part is I actually agree that if we start Daniels all 17 games that we would have a chance!!!! A chance at Arch Manning w a new coach next year
August 24th, 2026 at 6:45 pm
Rod, What are you going to change your name to if things go south?
Bucs winning
Baker top 10 QB
Defense top 10
Offense scoring points
I’ve been here since the beginning saying hey, I was wrong. Last year I had them at 11 wins and man I was wrong, but here I am same name eating crow. I think we should be able to pick your new name if Mayfield and the Bucs do better than your predictions. What do you think?

There ya go… Talkin’ STUPID again. It’s really mind-boggling, how much further away you get from the ‘reality’ learned from just a couple of weeks ago (on the over 30 QB’s NOT getting 4-year deals, & etc), to NOW. They just revert back to regurgitating the SAME OLD ‘stupid’ things, that they were TOLD would NOT happen the last time. It’s really unbelievable.
August 24th, 2026 at 6:52 pm

Munch has it easy on this one, a no lose prediction ! He says Daniels will be good and if he is he can say “ See , I told you guys he was gonna be good ,, you didn’t believe me but I told you “ or if it doesn’t come to pass he will say “ I was kidding about Daniels , you guys are funny thinking an UDFA was going to be real good , jeeeze so gulable “ either way can claim victory ,,, it’s not like Vinny predicting 11-6 this year ,, you heard it here

That is just NOT TRUE. Because, it’s ALL FAKE. Since, their tunes changes real QUICKLY though, when they start talking about THEIR OWN TEAMS. So, far it’s ONLY been the BUCS who have offered to pay Baker anything of significance. I mean, you can see the looks on THEIR FACES entirely change, along with the ‘NARRATIVE’ once they start talking about what THEY would pay, if it were THEIR TEAM. Seriously, you can SEE-IT in ‘real-time’ as soon as the tables are turned, and they start THINKING and running everything (all of the scenarios) through THEIR HEADS (about Baker, and his CAREER).
August 24th, 2026 at 7:02 pm
munch rod is loco!! that being said which Baker are we getting this year? 6-2 mvp or 2-7 missed the playoffs Baker? i say make him play the current deal if he was so insulted and disrespected, he plays like a 30 million dollar qb not a 50 million dollar qb, if they sign him i will be bummed bc i think there’s a chance he tanks this season, in other words i don’t trust him to get us deep in the playoffs
August 24th, 2026 at 7:12 pm
Man I thought our fans were bad ,, just listened to Browns fans on talk radio saying they may make the trip to Florida for games 1 and 2 just to boooo their QB lol,, that’s harsh
August 24th, 2026 at 7:32 pm
Y’all think he’s going to get a long term deal being a year older after this season?
Serious question, if the hang up about the 2yr/$100M extension was about the length of the deal, then how likely is it the front office offers him a longer deal with him being a year older?
You know what would be funny? Is if he has an average year by his standards and they offer him the same damn deal, that would be hilarious.
August 24th, 2026 at 7:33 pm

The Glazers are paying attention to the fact that this organization has not had such a collection of talent, year in and year out, over such a stretch as they have under Licht. The Bucs front office is widely respected and has had some knockout drafts.
As far as te head coach, the Glazers have control over that and bear responsibility. They can’t blame Licht. Also, it was Licht who brought Arians, and the 2 together brought Brady, and they won a SB. Licht knows what he’s doing.
Suggesting Licht needs to go is mindless stupidity.
August 24th, 2026 at 7:48 pm
At this point I kind of hope they sign Mayfield to a stupid contract.
Make it really irrational and dumb. Four years $65 million per.
That should be the nail in this organization’s coffin.
The HC\DC and GM will never recover from such an asinine decision.
And there will be exactly zero SB appearances for the Bucs with Mayfield.

Who here thinks that ANY QB will lead the Bucs to a SB with Bowles as HC? Anyone??
If the TEAM is good, and led by a good HC, I think Baker can win a SB. Just like Darold who I do NOT think is any better than Baker. He had the #1 defense in the NFL in points allowed, the Bucs were #20 in that category.
That said, I think the D will be better this year, and even the team will be better over all. But that won’t overcome the bad coaching nor prevent the D from quitting on the HC like they did last year. Ceiling IMO 11- 6, likely 9-8. Baker is gone (for nothing to the Bucs), Bowles if gone (for the better for the Bucs) and a 5-12 record in 2027.
I genuinely hope I am wrong and they perform better than that. I just don’t see it.

If Baker caves on a deal the Glazers are willing to give him, maybe something happens. I can’t see it happening before the beginning of the season until Bowles gets some Ws. The Glazers are not stupid and expect an ROI on every business decision they make. If Bowles poohs the bed and goes .500 or worse the first half of the season, I see a regime change coming and the Glazers putting a lock on their wallet.

No sir !! Baker had his chance and turned down the opportunity to be one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
There are 5 quarterbacks who played for the Bucs who won at least one Superbowl. Doug Williams, Steve Young, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Tom Brady. Baker Mayfield outshines all of them except Tom Brady !! As long as he continues to put his all into the game!!
I’m not sure about the Chiefs game. I think Bakers lackluster performance was an offensive disguise. We will soon find out.
Please don’t get me wrong, I’m Baker Mayfield fan. But Baker turned down a huge offer after a lackluster 2025 season and said “ it’s all about Ball” so now I want to see him put his heart into the 2026 season and get the Bucs into the playoffs. Maybe all the way to the championship if the coaches make the right decisions. That’s when I think Baker earns a new contract!!
Go Bucs !!

yeah best to get baker squared away and settled up…
because we have an insufficient #2 in browning…
and wonder boy, who has actually been quite wonderfully fun to watch in pre-season, is nothing more than a promising prospect who you can give the #3 qb slot…he’s nowhere near ready for anything but “fun – fan – fare”…if he was thrown to the wolves and starters on other teams, after 4-6 games his head would be sunken so low, he’d never recover…the hoopla over him is insanely inordinate

I knew nothing about Daniels college career so I researched it somewhat in depth. One notable thing is that his play against the tougher opponents actually got better. Two notable victories against Oklahoma and Texas Tech were 2 examples where Kansas was a major underdog and yet they won and he played really well in those games. He runs a 4.65 40 and Tyrod Taylor is a good comp, although Taylor ran a 4.50. According to scouting report, his arm isn’t as good as people have been saying recently and accuracy is an issue. He was the 12th rated qb in this class but would have been higher if not for his age and injury concerns as he missed considerable time in college. Confidence and leadership are two pluses as well. Sounds considerably better than Shaun King.Maybe he could be a viable starter in a couple years but at worst a high end backup.

…..according to the scouting report.

It’d be hard to get excited about Daniels, if his comp is Tyrod Taylor. Taylor has been around the league a long time but looking at his stats, at his absolute peak he only barely got over 3k yards passing and 20 passing TDs, albeit with 4 rushing TDs as well. Plus he only managed that kind of production in 2 seasons, basically every other season he was a backup

And Shaun King got us further into the playoffs than Baker has ever been – and was a blown call from the Super Bowl.
That’s what I’m saying, the Bucs are all in on Daniels! But he’s still a rookie and the team will want to take it slow while easing Baker out of the starting spot.

Why compare Daniels to Shawn King? If you are all in compare him to Tom Brady who was also undervalued, out of college. If you are going to step out on the ledge go big.

Come on Munch, Shaun King got us further??? I mean again a skewed statement ,, yes we went to the NFC championship against the mighty Rams who were scoring 36 points per game(scored 41 against Vikings in the playoffs)and deep in the 4th quarter we were leading 6-5 ,, SK threw a Pick and we lost 11-6,,, some say it was one of the most dominant defensive performances ever in a championship game ,, even Kurt Warner had 3 picks that game ,, So sure SK went farther in playoffs but our D was super duper flat out awesome !

Munch is correct. Shaun King is vastly more accomplished than Baker will ever be.
He’s been to the mountain top and actually contributed to a title victory.
All Baker does is whine like a spoiled child.
Cut the drift wood and let’s move on already.

“I like what I see so far in JD, but to divine what management thinks is really stupid for a guy who posts like he is some sort of oracle.”
The adults having been saying for years Munschk is a nit Not to name call but because the receipt have been in for years
among his greatest hits
Modern nfl teams have no use for a running back
Jameis is a franchise QB
and even last year -the defense was a top ten defense
Kiddies follow Rod along with his ten sock puppet accounts.

Please extend Baker as soon as possible. Outside of Brady, he’s the best QB this franchise has ever had! I would love to see us in the playoffs maybe competing for another Super Bowl each of the next 4-5 years. That’s the easiest route to get there.

@ SkunkApe – Ummmm, Hmmmmm… Let’s See… What about when he was booted from Cleveland!? They refused to pay him what HE wanted, but did ANYONE ELSE… Ummmm, NO. But, he did got ‘peanuts’ to go to Carolina, where he eventually LOST his job to “Sam The Damn MAN Darnold” (the very minute Sam had fully-recovered from his ankle injury), and was then promptly, booted from there. So, WHO offered HIM the ‘big bucks’ after his short lived joy with the Rams!? That’s right, NO ONE. The Bucs gave him ‘peanuts’ once again. How bout just 2-YEARS AGO, when he became an ‘Unrestricted’ FREE AGENT, totally free to go ANYWHERE HE WANTED!? Crickets. And, the Bucs allowed him to go out on the open market, and find his best deal… Hell, ANY DEAL. But, he once again, did NOT. So, the BUCS swooped in and SAVED HIM by giving him a GIFT of a 3-year/$100-MIL contract, that was nothing more than a glorified “prove-it” deal, that the Bucs could get out of pretty easily after only 1-YEAR… And, basically walk away from mostly scot FREE after 2-YEARS. So, He’s had PLENTY of opportunities. Now, WHAT would ever make YOU ‘believe’ that there would’ve been 20+ OTHER TEAMS just chomping at the bit, to get in line to PAY BAKER top-of-the-market MAX-level $$$$$ LONGTERM!? It’s FAKE. It does NOT exist. Period. End of Story.

@Melvin, you really need to get back on your meds. You’re rambling. And leaving out pertinent facts… but hey, it’s your world, I’m just visiting.

I also wonder if the seemingly random choices for capitalization make you feel like you’re making a better point. Weird.
