Pat McAfee Already Hyping Rueben Bain As Possible Defensive Rookie Of The Year

August 6th, 2026

Likes Bucs’ rookie.

Interesting analysis on “The Pat McAfee Show” on the Miami Mauler, Bucs rookie Rueben Bain.

Watching Bain, there is no question he belongs. Joe isn’t saying he’s a one-man gang, but the Miami Mauler edge rusher does not appear overmatched whatsoever.

Tuesday night at the Glazer Shed during the Bucs’ night practice, the move Bain put on veteran right tackle Luke Goedeke in pass blocking/rushing drills was absolutely beautiful.

That hasn’t been Bain’s only highlight. McAfee, through clips on Twitter, has seen enough of Bain to declare Bain won’t have much, if any, transition from college football stud to a top-shelf NFL player.

“Any time we see a rookie cook a little bit, just like yesterday when we saw [Sonny Styles] with the Commanders, just feel so confident and do it, and Caleb [Downs] like feel so confident. Anytime you see a rookie that natural, that comfortable at this stage of their career, it’s like OK, they’re gonna have a big [rookie year],” McAfee said.

“Let’s go ahead and put Bain down for potential defensive MVP, rookie defensive player of the year.”

McAfee co-host and former Colts defensive back Darius Butler agreed with McAfee. Butler is also impressed by Bain’s attitude. Butler said Bain’s aura and rizz remind him of his old teammate, defensive end Robert Mathis.

Butler said Bain is a different build than Mathis but has a similar attitude, which Butler likes.

It sure would be nice to see Vita Vea and Bain on the field together for the Bucs. No idea if we ever will.

If Vita gets traded, then I expect the next day Baker signs an extension. Since it seems about the money, they should have extra cash flow, an extra rookie salary next year, some extra flexibility for a veteran CB and a happy Franchise QB. Baker is the popcorn.

And yea, I’m stoked about Ruben.

  10. Not a good look Says:

It ain’t outta the realm of possibility (stress possibility) that we are looking back in several years and saying we got our defensive core all in one Draft. Bain, Trotter and Scott bring a completely different type of attitude and physicality too.

  11. Bojim Says:

Maybe if he wore a different shirt. Looks like he’s trying to hang on to his young self.

Blonde Jim Rome has spoken. Who cares.

  13. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Bain is, and will be, a stud. Gonna be kinda fun to see which of the guys ahead of him bust and the fans of those teams second guessing their GMs. I’m expecting the Saints and the Rams being among those teams. Probably the Cardinals too.

  14. Nick2 Says:

He also picked the Panthers to win the division!
