Future Of The Bucs In Baker Mayfield’s Hands?

July 12th, 2026

“You’re my guy, ‘Bake.'”

While the two Joes agree Baker Mayfield will very likely be the Bucs’ quarterback in 2027, both continue to throw empty beer cans at each other at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

The Joe typing this here post wants to see how Mayfield handles a potential bounceback year this season before inking him to a massive deal.

(The other Joe has been stomping his feet for the Bucs to extend Mayfield for months.)

Does Mayfield shake off the stench of last year’s collapse and lead the Bucs back to the playoffs, or does he have yet another season where he struggles to make it to the finish line due to undisclosed injuries? He had injuries last year and in 2023, he couldn’t throw in a win-or-go-home game at Carolina to end the regular season?

Gilberto Manzano of SI.com seems to think how Mayfield plays this fall could determine the future of the Bucs.

However, what the Buccaneers decide to do with Mayfield’s contract dilemma this summer will be a telling sign of how highly GM Jason Licht views this familiar core group for the long run. If Mayfield doesn’t get his extension, this could be a make-or-break season for many in Tampa Bay, including Bowles.

While Joe knows full well the Bucs have offered Mayfield a contract, the cautious Joe thinks rushing to extend Mayfield could doom both Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

If Mayfield has a repeat of last year, where he wills himself back onto the field when maybe he should take off a game or two, and struggles as a result, why would Licht and Bowles want to hitch their careers to a quarterback over 30 who can’t stay healthy enough to be effective down the stretch when wins are critical?

On the surface, that doesn’t seem to be very savvy.

Unfair take on the Bake. Every single QB in the league would be playing hurt with the O-line Baker had last season. Lousy O-line, no running game, OC was a total failure game planning outside of scripted plays. WRs didn’t get open. Baker had no time for plays to develop, he was getting killed by defenses. Yet he never gave up.

You know “Somewhere on a beach”…New young toys, healthy !The Diva jumped ship with hamstrings his tantrums and age! His defense has been recharged, with some new parts! A nasty chip! He’ll be locked and loaded, Looking forward to watching him! Just sayn…Go Bucs!

  3. LynchMob50 Says:

If our future is in his hands, we’re certainly doomed to mediocrity.

QBs that get hurt and are ineffective don’t get better over time.

Best bet is to trade him now and get max value in return.

Then you can let Browning take over this year. He could probably keep us in the hunt.

After the season fire Bowels and Licht. Bring on capable people with brains.

    Mike knows.

  4. 3.28.Evans Says:

Anyone referring to the best offensive player in Bucs history, a sure hall of famer, and a stellar contributor to the community a “diva” immediately shows its ignorance and surely resides on the shortest bus.

Moving on — Tom Brady couldn’t win with Tdod as head coach. Tdod could have Mahomes, Allen, Stafford, Burrow, Unitas, Baugh. Wouldn’t matter. They would all turn to suckage. While Baker has proven to gag repeatedly in the critical moments, he gets a bit of a reprieve considering the disaster he works for.

Since this is Todd’s last season, don’t commit to a QB who likely would not be favored by the next head coach.

  5. Todd Says:

How about a HC or GM that says ” Hey Bake you are too dinged up to play so you are sitting out the next one”. Period and end of story.

  6. BoriMex 813 Says:

    🚨
    @LynchMob50

    Your take is downright sinister.

Trade a proven starting quarterback… for what exactly? A rookie? Hand the keys to a journeyman backup because he “could probably” be better? That’s exactly how franchises spend the next decade searching for another quarterback.

Nobody is saying Baker is perfect. Every quarterback has flaws. But his production, leadership, and durability make the risk of moving on far greater than the reward of gambling on an unproven replacement.

    So I’ll ask again…

Could you kindly provide Jake Browning’s résumé? What has he accomplished that makes you believe he’d outperform Baker Mayfield?

And while you’re at it, who are these “capable people” you’d trust to run our beloved franchise? We’re all ears, sir.

At this point, I’m starting to wonder if you’re rooting for the Bucs… or for the quarterback carousel to come back.

Need training camp. This offseason of negativity has been brutal.

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Mayfield was a FA in 2027 – where is he going to sign besides the Bucs?
    NFC teams:
    Not Rams, Seahawks or 49ers
    Not Cowboys, Eagles or Commanders
    Not Lions, Bears or Packers
Maybe Saints, Cardinals, Vikings or Giants
    AFC teams:
    Not Bills, Dolphins or Patriots
Not Chiefs, Raiders, Broncos or Chargers
    Not Bengals, Ravens or Browns
    Not Jaguars, Titans or Colts
    Maybe Texans or Jets
If Mayfield were to replace one of the starters on the maybe teams, Bucs would have option of signing/trading for CJ Stroud, Jacoby Brissett, Kyler Murray, maybe even Aaron Rodgers which would be entertaining.
Mayfield will probably re-sign with Bucs at a cap friendly reasonable rate.
    Maybe Jets or Steelers

Yeah “Bake” sit this one out “Terible Teddy” is ready…UGH!

  11. Crazyhorse54 Says:

All that last season proved was:
    1. No team can win with an OC as bad as Grizz
    2. No team or QB can win without a strong and deep O-line. Bucs reserves at Guard and Tackle were dangerously awful.
    3. No team can win without a strong backup QB. If the Bucs had that last season, Mayfield might could have missed a few games to heal.
    4. No team can win when placed in the perfect storm of injuries and really, really bad coaching.

  12. TonyD Says:

If Baker is really pushing to have a new contract by training camp, he’ll have to compromise quite a bit, I don’t believe the Bucs will want to commit so much of the team’s salary cap at the moment for a QB that plays with reckless abandon (a 30+ year old) and risk the team’s immediate future. Either way, I hope both sides can come to some sort of compromise.

  13. Stpetematt Says:

Since he’s one of the top 5-9 most talented QB’s in the NFL, I think signing him now is an incredibly savvy idea. The guy could play for 8-10 more years at a pro bowl level. It’s almost automatic and inevitable we end up with a way worse QB if we don’t.

  14. Steve V Says:

Hes holding on to see what Lamar does,Lamar got hurt and his Dline was in shambles! which led to the defensive backfield struggles, which feeds throughout the whole TEAM.Then the weight of it all depends on a rookie kicker/ special teams.. The coach is so important maybe Harbaugh should have made the attempt!! Sh!+ happens! Coulda shoulda woulda…

  15. Stpetematt Says:

And for the millionth time tom Brady was not focused at all on his past season of football. He was getting a divorce. Stop bringing up he couldn’t win with Bowles. Nobody could have won with Tom Brady in his last season and I don’t really blame him. Things happen. Just like the injuries last year. Very little you can do about it other than make sure everyone is training and stretching properly.

  18. Teacherman Says:

Sam Darnold is not better than Baker Mayfield. And he just won the Super Bowl.

Baker can beat Mahomes in the Super Bowl. He beat him at Oklahoma.

Baker can win a Suoer Bowl.

If. And these are big IF’s.

    1. He slides more in the first half of the season. He must preserve his body for the 2nd half of the season.

    2. Our offensive line actually gets some push and opens lanes for Bucky, Gainwell and Tucker.

    3. Our defense plays violently and gets after the QB like the Seahawks.

    4. Zion and Morrison have the best seasons of their careers. And stay healthy. We have UDFA’s and Practice squad corners as our 3 backups. Hayes is our 7th CB.

    5. Vea stays healthy.

    6. Trotter and Anzalone mesh and cover the middle of the field.

    7. If we call plays like Coen did. And Godwin stays healthy. I love his screen plays. He’s like a RB. He gets yards!

    8. Tykee and Winfield stay healthy. Ànd JJ Roberts, Rashad Wisdom and Scott play GREAT special teams.

    9. Kancey doesn’t get hurt.

    10. Bain and Yaya combine for 18 sacks.

    11. Ànd we have depth at guard. Guards are the key to a running game. If we can’t run the ball again, we can’t win a Super Bowl.

  19. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

    Floormatt stop with your nonsense.

Mayfield is maybe the top 11-20th most talented qb. He’s only better than NFC South and
some teams with scrub qbs and NOWHERE near the talent of an injured LAMAR JACKSON

He’s 32 and now going to be injured from now on so what makes you think he’s going to play at a Prowl Bowl level for the next 8-10 years when he plays like a snow bowler when injured???

Brady had to deal with HC/DC Bowles AND LeftoveSandwhich as his OC to go along with his mental state that year but still could’ve won with Liam Coen in 2022.

  20. LynchMob50 Says:

Floormatt just showed his hand. He thought he had a flush because the cards were all black. Nope, just a busted straight. As per usual.

It’s one thing to be a Pom Pom waiving lemming. But it’s a whole other matter when you spout the most ridiculous nonsensical rubbish in history.

We get it dude. You have a Baker doll with several openings.

He is that man. To you.

    Mike knows.

  21. ScottyMack Says:

This is like watching democrats and republicans trying to convince each other of anything. Baker haters will always hate. They cannot be convinced. They see things nobody else sees, they forget the good and only remember the bad, they predict doom nobody else predicts, they have unbridled optimism for an unknown, unspecified somebody else at QB. They think the QB is the only thing that makes a team win or lose and use wins and losses as their only measuring stick.

Sure seems like a complete waste of time trying to convince them otherwise.

  24. MelvinJunior Says:

@ BoriMex 813 – “Could you kindly provide Jake Browning’s résumé? What has he accomplished that makes you believe he’d outperform Baker Mayfield?”

He never even insinuated that Browning was better. He obviously believes that THIS “BUCS TEAM” has zero chance with either one (which so do I). So, it doesn’t matter. Though, I don’t agree with this next part (not yet, anyway)… But, to go ahead and get what you can NOW, by trading Mayfield, and then just TANKING. I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t have any faith in Browning, either. They’re NOT trading Baker… They already committed to Lickt & Bowles for at least THIS season. They’re NOT just jerking the rug out from under them like that anyway, so why even respond. Now, if/when they are 3-6 and heading TO Chicago (the Glazers won’t have the balls to do it), I would DEFINITELY trade Baker at that point, before the trade-deadline, if given the opportunity to do so. I would take a 2028-3rd or 2027-4th for him in a HEARTBEAT… To say, the RAMS. If/when Stafford goes down and they are looking GOOD AND ROLLIN’ but are not wanting to turn to THEIR ROOKIE just yet… I bet THEY would at least ‘kick the tires’ on Baker, as a RENTAL. If he looks pretty good there and doesn’t just absolutely BLOW-IT, then he could parlay that into a nice little contract ‘somewhere’ as a “Bridge” QB for the rest of his career. But, IF the Bucs end up extending him this offseason, then we are STUCK. They just entirely SCREWED our potential REBUILD, our brand new fresh start with our Salary Cap situation, AND our Head Coaching search. All of it. EVERYTHING. It just sits us back even further, while “extending” the INEVITABLE. He needs to play-out THIS SEASON FIRST.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“If Mayfield has a repeat of last year, where he wills himself back onto the field when maybe he should take off a game or two”

Joe, I do not believe there is any way Baker does not get a contract before the season starts. It’s pretty much impossible at this point.

The Bucs have already offered him something, so in a worse case scenario, he takes that deal and gets a contract. He wants a contract so that if the Bucs replace Bowles, he won’t have to worry about the new coach not wanting him.

He’s hoping the numbers go up between now and then, but even if they do not, he gets a contract to lock himself in.

As to the future of the Bucs being in his hands? Partially, sure. But the rest of the team plays a role too. Say, for example, he turns the ball over…will the defense be good enough to stop the opposing from scoring off it this year?

Appreciate the comments bro. Your attempts to engage our poop eating troll “friends” will only lead you in circles tho. For years we’ve tried to get them to give us their vision but it always results in misdirection and middle school name calling.

    Let me try to help.
Stenchmom thinks we should have hired Mike McCarthy
Aquapunk thinks Dan Campbell is a dreamboat and Liam (the chinless wonder) Coen should have been gifted the HC job.

    @Stpetematt @Steve V
Keep that positivity coming bros. It’s really starting to bother the trolls 👍🏼

  28. MelvinJunior Says:

Wow. That would be TOO CRAZY. What if they traded Old Bake to the Rams at the deadline (in the above scenario), and THEN signed him’ AGAIN, the very next offseason LoL. Now, THAT would be WILD. LoL. Cause, it’s not like he’ll have very many other ‘options’ in the first place… IF, the Bucs came a callin. There will prob only be about 6-7 teams in the QB-market to begin with, and THEY ALL will most likely be DRAFTING ONE. If there are 7 and 5 draft one in the 1st-Round… That leaves just 2-spots left for Mac Jones and Good-ole Bake. Both, of those teams will be DRAFTING ONE, too… Whether that is in the backend of the 1st, or the 2nd-Round. So, either way, Bake will be relegated to being a “Bridge” from here on out. IF Bake is “SMART” he will sign the deal that’s on the table.

  29. Well well well Says:

Teacher man, you are 100% correct with one exception, Baker beat Mahomes TWICE in college. Spanked him twice. If it wasn’t for the refs he would have beaten him in the NFL. And if it weren’t for TB not going for 2 instead of the point after, he would have beat him Monday night in the rain in 2024. When Baker is healthy and he has a decent team around him he can beat anyone. We are so lucky to have him. Pay the man. If mahomes doesn’t have a top 5 OL and a world class HC he isn’t all that great.

  30. LynchMob50 Says:

How many SB appearances and rings does Baker have again???

Yep, he’s just as good as Mahomes, probably way better……

Scott Mack, if Baker took the Bucs to the Super Bowl and lost, the HATERS would say, we told you so but if the Bucs won, the HATERS would say, great defense!

  33. Obvious Says:

If I’m prospective new HC coming in, in ‘27, I’m doing backflips to have baker. You don’t want a rookie qb unless he’s considered a generational talent.

The reason I state this is we don’t have to do no deal or a massive deal. There is a middle ground.

You can give BM a healthy bump while also protecting the franchise. Which, of course, is why he’s not extended already. You have to protect the franchise.

    No guarantees past ‘28.

  34. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Beeej Says: “HOW long, HOW many picks and signings have Colts expended trying to replace Andrew Luck?”

Doesn’t matter. Irrelevant. It’s not a good enough reason for an excuse to be WEAK and not to at least TRY. But, the Colts have typically went with older “Bridge-type” guys, Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Daniel Jones, Matt Ryan, Nick Foles, & etc. They had ole Garner for awhile… Hell, even Flacco too, of course LoL.

They haven’t been DRAFTING all these 1st-Round QB’s and actually trying to ‘develop’ them… They’ve been TOO SCARED (just like the Bucs) to ‘tear-it all down’ and start over fresh. And, LOOK at what it has GOTTEN ‘EM. They take all these ‘old guys’ who can never make-it through an entire season, and they trade away all their 1st-Round Picks (that I actually agreed with last season for Sauce, before Jones was knocked-out – I liked their roster and they went for it, so I can’t fault THEM for that there, they were like #1-seed at the time of the trade).

The whole Anthony Richardson Pick was ALL on JIM IRSAY. Shane Steichen and NO ONE ELSE (also including MYSELF), even wanted him, at ALL. It was one of THE ‘stupidest’ PICKS EVER, but what are you going to do when you have a ‘meddling’ and DEMANDING OWNER!? The kid was NOT ready. Hell, he only started like 11-GAMES and played in just ‘bits and pieces’ of THOSE (because he was SO BAD), while at Florida. And, I saw every single one of them. I mean CLEARLY the kid wasn’t ready, and EVEN a ‘blind person’ could see that. He should’ve been moved to WR or TE. No one has done this kid any favors.

  35. LynchMob50 Says:

Please tell us again when Baker is taking us to the SB???

Just asking because I’d like to buy some of the tickets he’s going to purchase.

That’s the only way he’ll ever get there!

    Ask Mike. He knows!

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  36. Obvious Says:

IMO Baker will never take us to the SB. But he can be a cog in the machine that goes there with the right HC.

That’s why you don’t pay him like Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, etc.

As soon as you see an opportunity in the draft to upgrade you do it.

  37. LynchMob50 Says:

If the Bucs would have decided to give Winston an extension we wouldn’t have a second title. It never happens without Brady.

The proof you lemmings will ask? How many titles has Winston won post Bucs: Exactly zero.

And that’s the same amount Baker will ever have. Especially while being coached by a confirmed sh@t for brains in Toad Bowels.

Lots of the Pom Pom squad were clamoring for Jamie’s to be the QB1 for the next decade after 2019. One of them still writes for JBF.

Baker is no different. He isn’t worth a bucket of piss.

  42. Kenton Smith Says:

Between Mahomes, Lamar, Josh Allen and Baker. Which of these QBs of NFL fame, has the most yards passing and the most TD passes the last 3 years? The a$$ kicking is not only decisive, but thorough! Baker also had the most yards per carry in that competition. Yes, the domination is striking, but the cream rises to the top, always has, always will.

  43. Stpetematt Says:

    Child please.

Baker was a 1st overall draft pick for many reasons, and shows them constantly. Baker has plenty of talent to win a Super Bowl right now. How about giving him one of our two championship defenses and seeing how he does? That, plus the O-line stays healthy and we’d have a good chance of going *undefeated*.

The problem isn’t the QB, and never was.

  44. Steve V Says:

Winston ? What 36 tds and 36 picks! I blame Ariens, for not ” developing ” him! You live and die by the gunslinger, Need a dude with Mayfields mentality to get after the qb ! HENCE MAHOMES / JONES (YES SMARTY BRITCHES I KNOW HES A DOWN LINEMAN) IN BAIN WE TRUST!! GO FN BUCS! …STEVEVKNOWS!

  47. LynchMob50 Says:

Kenton Smith you must be drunk. You can’t really believe what you’re saying.

The best QB in the NFL just went 2-7 down the stretch and no playoffs in 2025.

No one could be a SB winning QB with Toad Bowels as the HC\DC. No one.

Plus, you actually have to play winning football to get there.

  52. Kenton Smith Says:

Hey LynchMob50. You’re so interested in “ask Mike”. Ask him what? What it’s like leading the National Football League in receptions? Or touchdowns? Or yardage? I don’t think he’s ever done any of those things, LynchMob50. I think I’d ask Baker. And I think Baker would tell you that Todd Bowles is a good and decent and respected head coach. I’m not putting a ton of stock in “asking Mike” anything. And I’m putting alot less stock in anything you might say about our Coach or our Quarterback, LynchMob50. Because you don’t have good sense.

  53. jimmy Says:

with the right team and coaching staff baker could win a superbowl, so could probably 20 other qb’s currently playing. last year was a perfect example.

the buc fans are better off with him than without him, thats for sure. if you think anything else, well then your last name must be glazer and the money he wants comes out of your pocket.

who else are the bucs gonna get?

the team knows it doesnt matter, until TB312 retires, they arent gonna win much.

  54. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

It had been said before he came here Mayfield was a very polarizing individual, and I’ve been able to see since he came up here his little she man fans are just as polarizing. How the heck do these suckers who had never been up here until he slid off the garbage pile onto our roster and pretty much gifted his spot that these Baker tools come up here calling Buc fans trolls on our website? I have never seen a group of so called men act like straight up females because Buccaneer fans don’t live with Mayfield’s skerohtumm on our chins like they do!!! You clowns claim he’s the greatest, that he’s a coach maker not the other way around yet when he sucks or doesn’t play up to par make excuses and point fingers in other directions but NEVER at him then cry because we point him out at you. I’ll say it again you suckers are worse than oneilbuc with his man love of Jaymiss Winsnot ATM.

Get it straight losers Mayfield’s will never get us to the Super Bowl because he just isn’t good enough. Just because he makes you moist in your nether regions doesn’t mean he will get the Bucs any where beyond the 2nd round of the playoffs and that is his ceiling. He will always come in big moments when it counts the most and get us just to the edge of something good then fall off the edge. That is his M.O. Mayfield affects you guys do much that even of this here site’s admin who’s supposed to be against any kind of “unreasonable” censorsjip added simple innocuous words to the mahderation profile because me and other Buc fan posters use them to call into question your man cards. Man I hope that Baker bolts because you people are unbearable as a bunch of yammering women. I will put up with what we don’t have without him of it means most of you go with him.

  58. MelvinJunior Says:

@ DavidBigBucsFan99 – 💯 💯 and, they NEVER hold Baker to the same level of accountability, & etc. as they do with literally EVERY other player. It’s all so embarrassing, it’s just PATHETIC. And, you’re taking “ADULTS” here, and not just some 10-11 year old little kid, who doesn’t know any better (or anything about behind the scenes/contracts/free agency/the REAL WORLD), & etc. etc. Because, they are A KID. I mean, come TF ON… These people are “ADULTS” who are infatuated with a ‘professional’ fricken ATHLETE. Geez. They’re just living inside of some VERY weird (“adult”) Baker Fantasyland. And, they are following HIM from one school or team to the NEXT… it’s INSANITY. It’s one of the reasons why I DON’T want Baker to sign… I want HIM GONE. Just to see THEM follow along with HIM and on their way THE HELL OUTTA HERE.

  59. Well well well Says:

It’s kinda strangle how fan99 keeps bringing up other guys skerohtumms. I’m beginning to feel uncomfortable just typing about this guy talking about his chin and other guys body parts. Baker, with an injured team, beats a healthier team that wins the superbowl a couple of weeks later but “chin99” says Baker can’t beat that team, that he in fact did beat. Maybe if he would quit his fantasizing about other men maybe he could think clearer and make sense for the first time.

And I’m not getting into the Mahomes /Baker discussion cause it’s silly no matter what happened in college,,, Pro results speak for themselves and it’s not even close….. However , to be fair , Mahomes has had Reid and Kelce the whole time w Spags and a good D and the honest truth is in the Cleveland playoff game if a Cleveland WR doesn’t fumble at KCs 1 out of the back of the end zone (resulting in no points and KC possession) Mahomes most likely has one less Super Bowl ring ,,, But it’s still not a discussion to this point or will it most likely ever be

  61. Attaboy Says:

Lightning, the difference is you can see reality and know how it works. The reason the haters hate is due to their inability to see reality. Everyone that sees reality knows Baker could win a superbowl he just needs a team good enough to get there, like any qb. They miss that part of their brain that helps them make that connection but they will never see that. They will continue to hate Baker and anyone that likes Baker. They are so lost mentally they think qb win a SB all by themselves. What deranged people the haters are. No one wins a SB by themselves, no one.

  62. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Well well well it fits you so well because that’s the only thing you see Baker Baker Baker. You’re a bunch of females the way you pant over a guy who’s never been consistently good nor really done anything good other than giving you clowns warm cuddly feelings. Will be glad when you leave. You chumps are a big reason why I can’t like him the other is his play

  63. MelvinJunior Says:

I mean, they now talk a buncha smack about MIKE EVANS… REALLY!? That is just how weak and insecure THEIR OWN egos are. It’s PATHETIC. I think it is VERY obvious that NONE of these people have ever been around a ‘high-level’ team/player/franchise/or program before. It’s the only thing I can think of… other than, they are FAMILY. Cause, I can tell you that I’ve been extremely close (on the inside) with SO MANY ‘big-time’ professional athletes AND head coaches… LEGENDARY. And, have personally KNOWN THEM. Close ‘friends’ with SEVERAL… Former players (NBA/NFL/AND MLB and ‘Minors’ lol), and Head Coaches (and ‘assistants/trainers/ballboys’ lol & etc). EVEN, former #1-overall PICKS. And, I can honestly say, that I have NEVER ‘followed’ a single ONE of them this way (&/or) became a “fan” of THEIR Team. NEVER ONCE, have I EVER commented (or followed) on THEIR team’s websites, blogs, or etc. Definitely NOT to defend THEM and their EVERY move. It’s INSANITY. Just Extremely, WEIRD. But, maybe, this is part of the reason… These people are able to live in a ‘kid-like’ FANTASYLAND, since they’ve never actually been around any of it before, in real-life. So, they just think it’s something entirely different… Just whatever THEY want to make it out to be inside of their own heads. Whatever it is… It’s just some VERY WEIRD SHEETS.

  64. Optimistic Says:

Baker has a contract to play for the Bucs in the 2026 season. No need to rush. I Baker plays good for the first 2 thirds of the season, the Bucs will resign Baker to a 50 million plus contract. If Baker plays like he did the last half of the 2025 season than the bucs will move on.

  65. Stpetematt Says:

You win a Super Bowl with a complete football team, not just a stud quarterback. Otherwise, Dan Marino would have one. So would Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. The QB can raise your chances of getting there (see Mahomes) but also fail miserably when he doesn’t have a team around him (also see Mahomes this past season). Darnold just won one on a complete team. If Baker was Seattle’s QB he would have won it even easier.
The Bucs team is improving and could contend this year with quite a bit of luck or more likely next year with another mostly defensive draft. There’s certainly no reason to burn it all down when we’ve suffered so many injuries which don’t give us a true indicator of where this team is at!

  66. Stpetematt Says:

And I like the Bucs first, then Baker and Bowles. They just so happen to be the best options for my team right now. I mean, unless Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson or Sean McVay happen to be available.

  67. Attaboy Says:

Lynch50 is a total imbecile. Just because you have had the best HC in football, a top 5 OL and a top 10 defense since you were drafted doesn’t mean you are the best. However, the last 2 years he hasn’t had a top 5 OL and you can see he isn’t doing very good is he? Mahomes isn’t the second best qb like you morons think he is. He has been lucky to have the best HC in a long time. Without him and that top 5 OL he isnt near as good. Having those 3 things makes ALL the difference in the world. And that’s one thing you are right on lynch50, Baker is as good as Mahomes. If Baker would have had the leagues best HC, a top 5 OL and a top 10 defense like Mahomes has had since being drafted Baker would have been the one with the SB rings. I realize you people could never conceive of that reality but it is true. Baker has played Mahomes 3 times in the pros and should have beat him in 2 of those. Baker has played Mahomes 5 times, 2 in college and 3 in the NFL. With 1 play in each of those games and Baker would have beat him 4 of those 5. You haters don’t know anything about talent, nothing. This is a great example of you haters not knowing talent, you have said for years now how Baker was slow and couldn’t run. Well, now he has the best running stats of ANY QB playing. You were totally wrong about that part of his game just like you are totally wrong about everything else BM6.

  68. Oscar Says:

Yes he got beat up last last year and should have missed 2 or 3 games. In 2023 he should have missed the game against Carolina in the last game of the season. That doesn’t sound like a chronically injured quarterback to me. Burrow, Jackson, Stroud, Herbert, Love, Purdy, Mahomes etc all missed several games between 2023-2025, some missing quite a few games. If Baker had missed a few games when he was hurt, you wouldn’t have witnessed the inconsistent play that now gives you pause. If he had missed some time, the narrative would be entirely different. Nobody knows what Lamar Jackson would have had looked like had he played with his bad hamstrings or Purdy had he played through his bad toe, etc etc

  71. Lightningvinny1 Says:

If Baker didn’t play injured he would probably still be in Cleveland,, send him to the Rays for a 2 week tutorial on how to Slide !!!!! Yes the running through guys and getting creamed for extra yards is inspiring and sometimes amazing but in the end Broken ribs and legs ripped out of socket are undefeated

  72. Oscar Says:

I think there are only 2 quarterbacks that can maintain a good level of play while dealing with certain types on nagging injuries and that is Josh Allen and maybe Justin Herbert.

  73. Oscar Says:

Allen especially proved that he can play well through injury. We don’t know what the rest would look like playing injured because they sit when injured.

  74. Oscar Says:

Good teams can buy some time when dealing with their quarterback being injured by relying on their defense and special teams to hold the fort as well as a decent backup quarterback.

  75. Stpetematt Says:

With our starting offensive line it’s far more unlikely Baker needs to scramble as much or gets hurt in the first place. All starters are excellent pass protectors.

  76. GhostofBrady Says:

This team is a great fit for Baker. But so was Texas Tech until HC Kingsbury didn’t offer him a scholarship even though he was the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year as a walk-on who got injured midseason. He gambled on himself, walked on to another team who gave him a chance to prove to everyone he’s the guy. He only won 3 Big 12 championshps in a row, 2 BCS playoff appearances and a Heisman. Then broke the NFL Rookie QB touchdown record on a team that went 1-31 the previous 2 seasons, fired their head coach and OC midseason and then won their only playoff road victory in 30+ years. Baker has no reason to take less than 53M+ APY with at least $125M guaranteed on signing and $165M guaranteed before 2028 from the Steelers, Jets, Miami, Indianapolis, Atlanta, New Orleans, Minnesota, maybe more. That’s the going rate for Top 12 QB in 2027.

If Tampa fails to sign him by training camp, he will bet on himself and then he will force Tampa to tack $5-8M on top of that each year for making him play without an injury guarantee all through 2026. Or let him make that money on one of these other teams. The team will not be able to afford $50M franchise tag + $30M voided year due in 2027 on ONE player.

Licht is playing a very dangerous game with a guy who bets on himself, isn’t afraid of competition and isn’t afraid to go somewhere else to rally players around him.

The Pom Pom Squad and their naive, blind ignorance ignore uncomfortable truths and are sucking energy from the universe. The season can’t end soon enough.

  78. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Well said GOB,, well said,, of course I said to extend him last year for 45 when that was a good number ,,, now it’s 53,,, next year it will be 58 ,,,,, 45 would have been a steel (er lol)

  79. Kenton Smith Says:

Okiejim. Ridgerunners. Dang Proud of it!

  80. Stpetematt Says:

I sincerely hope Licht stops playing games with him and signs him asap. This is a crucial move for our football team if we want to stay relevant. And no, using the franchise tag will be impossible. We either lose 30M in salary next year for nothing or sign him and spread out the damage. Those are the two only possible options. Let’s take the latter, or our management has become insane.

  81. Oneilbuccs Says:

This is not a Superbowl roster so it doesn’t make sense to bring Baker back for 4 or 5 years. This team is set up perfectly for a rookie quarterback because let’s be honest you can get 8 or 9 wins with a rookie quarterback in this division. Baker haven’t dominated this division yet because he has to put the team on his back in big games and Baker can’t do that. The money they would give Baker they can take that money and build the team offense and defense. The team is young on the offensive side of the ball and a 32 year old quarterback that’s never been elite is a bridge quarterback . It’s 8 rookies coming out of the draft the bucs can get that will either be better or the same as Baker with room for them to grow.

  82. Lightningvinny1 Says:

If this is the case One,, then I want Baker to go to a serious team that wants to win,,, Give him Houston’s defense or Pittsburgh’s defense and watch him go,,, can Baker put the entire team on his back and win,,, not more then 8 games when his line is on the IR , WR held out , D is horrific and the special teams , well let’s just say I would take IMGs special teams last year over ours (that’s bad) . So yea 45 mil is probably off the table now but 53 will seem cheap in 4 years . And the rookie QB route w Gino Smith at the helm for now,,, no thanks

  83. LynchMob50 Says:

But Cousins never faced a Bowles defense when he was also the HC.

*Meant to say in the playoffs for this one

  84. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Lynch you are right on the comparison although Cousins has generated $316 million in pay so far to date and Baker 140 million ,, so according to your math,, Baker is due a contract from the Bucs of 176 million , or 3 years 53 per (hometown -Fl tax discount )

  85. GhostofBrady Says:

Totally agree with you Oneilbuccs. If that’s how Licht sees it, it is right for Baker to prove himself on another team that believes in him. Licht and Tampa should eat the $30M voided Baker cap hit in 2027 and let him go. The money won’t matter on a wasted Tampa 2027 year anyway without Baker.

Do a mid-flop tank for a lottery QB. Half the posters on this site seem okay with this strategy so let them have their cake. I hope Buc fans enjoy football with a rookie QB, a new HC and another new OC in the coming years. Maybe Tampa and Licht will get lucky and find that magic core by 2029 like they hadn’t in the 6 years with Licht as GM until Brady handed them the leadership they needed.

Whatever money low or high Baker makes on one of these other teams, I am sure it will feel a lot better for him than the disrespect and non-belief in everything he and his teammates put into every offseason, game and preparation for each game. Players like him are happy to leave a team that look past them as a way to get a discount.

  86. Steve V Says:

What is a SB roster! If it were that easy everyone be doing it?

  87. LynchMob50 Says:

Baker will not have any leverage with anyone except the Bucs.

You do not have to sign him until after the upcoming season.

Make him earn it. Results actually do matter. After a 2-7 showing he has zero legs to stand on.

He’s going to be 33 before his next contract and will not be a long term solution.

A QB rich draft is coming. We’ll need a capable GM as well to choose the next QB1.

  88. Gotti-Dog-05-20-84 Says:

    “LynchMob50 Says:
    July 12th, 2026 at 9:54 pm

He’s going to be 33 before his next contract…”

    Just to maintain accuracy….he won’t be 33 until 2028

  89. Kenton Smith Says:

LynchMob50. Next March, 8 months from now, Baker can sign with another team in free agency. He will be 31 years old. Many franchises know that a QB can play high level football well into their thirties. So Licht can just franchise tag him? Yeah, right. Great idea for someone who wants to insure he never plays another snap for the Bucs. We don’t need to sign him now. But if we wait we better be prepared that he will have zero interest in a team friendly contract. In fact, it’ll be quite the contrary. If Prescott chokes it up in the playoffs this year I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised seeing Jerry Jones wanting to bring Baker home to Texas. 5 years and 350 million guaranteed or approximate. You reckon the Bucs will want to compete with that? I’m betting he’s signed this week. Be around 4 years and 225 million guaranteed. That will be our hometown discount price. Fair is Fair.

  90. 3.28.Evans Says:

It simple. Let’s see. Either Baker overcomes the gigantic enormous singularity that sucks all life out of the players on the team and performs well, or he doesn’t.

If he wins in spite of Twocoach, he’s worth market value.

    Or not.

    @DavidBigBucsFan99

You wrote an entire dissertation about other grown men instead of football. Read your own comment back. It’s not about coverages, reads, decision-making, contracts, roster building, or quarterback play. It’s page after page about how other fans make you feel. That’s not football analysis, that’s fan gay fiction. Here’s reality: Baker gets criticized when he deserves it. The difference is some of us also give him credit when he earns it. That’s called objectivity.

You keep insisting he isn’t good enough, yet Jason Licht, Todd Bowles, the coaching staff, and the locker room continue to put their faith in him. Funny how the people whose jobs actually depend on winning don’t seem to share your evaluation. Notice something else? You never offered a better option. Just insults. That’s usually what happens when the facts leave the room. You’re too easy to dismantle.

    @MelvinJunior

The irony here is spectacular, you are definitely full spectrum. You accuse everyone else of being obsessed, yet you openly admit you want blue chew bake gone, not because of football, but because you want his supporters to leave with him.

    Think about that.

Your entire argument revolves around other fans instead of the quarterback you’re criticizing. That’s not analysis; that’s an obsession my boy.

And if you’re going to lecture “ADULTS,” at least learn the difference between your and you’re before pounding the keyboard with the Caps Lock key, menso.

The rest of us are Buccaneers fans first. If Baker earns an extension, fantastic. If he doesn’t, Jason Licht will make the call. That’s how competent franchises operate. Meanwhile, you two have spent hundreds of words attacking other fans while providing almost zero football analysis. That’s the difference between emotion and evidence. Trolls can’t phase the KREW!!

Baker will take us to a superbowl when he has a healthy team around him that has been put together by a HC that knows what he is doing and how to do it, just like any other top 10 qb. If we get an OC like Coen it could be then. If you remember when we had Coen, Baker was ranked #1 in the league. It is amazing what a good coach can do with a talented qb. #1 in 2024!!!!

  96. Well well well Says:

“That’s one of the best plays I’ve ever seen a quarterback make”-Tom Brady on Baker Mayfield 🤑

  97. Attaboy Says:

When Baker was drafted that team was 1-31 the previous 2 years and 4-44 the previous 3 years. Their win % was .185. Baker improved it to .501, a .316 improvement. Mahomes team was .663 the 6 previous years. He improved it to .750. A .087 improvement. .087 vs. .501 mmmm. Baker took Cleveland to the playoffs and won on the road for the first time in 51 years. 51 years!!! It takes a great quarterback to do that!! Let’s not forget Pro Football Writers of America picked Baker as the Rookie of the Year. Please pay the man. Don’t let him go.

  98. Dadgumit Says:

Ok. So Mr. Joe bucsfan tools…. Who ya gonna get to replace bowles 328? Gotta score points to offset the the toilet bowl 328.. so who is the gunslinger that is out there and available? Joe, just another offs season article?

  99. Billlbuc Says:

The Joe writing this is a moron. Mayfield is not a rookie and has more of a track record and is done with the proving part of his career. You and the other Joe have listed every reason why he played bad the 2nd half of last year. Who are you to need another prove it year. That’s ridiculous for someone who claims to know football. If I’m Baker and the Bucs stance is to prove it again, I’m gone . He wants a team to believe in him as the Bucs have shown. To step back and say do it again is absurd and shows him you do t believe in him. If I’m Baker and this this Joe is the thoughts of the Bucs I’m not signing anything and I’m gone . If I’m the other Joe I’ll play with my hair on fire as he usually does.

  100. Kenton Smith Says:

Attaboy. I think what Baker did with the Browns was one of the most incredible franchise turnarounds I’ve seen in almost 70 years of living. You said the Browns were 4-44 before he got there. And you said that was a.185 winning percentage. I can’t help being a numbers man, Attaboy. And 4-44 is a winning percentage of .083.

  101. BoriMex 813 Says:

    @Billlbuc

You’re arguing against a position Joe never took. Nobody said Bake has to “prove he belongs” in the NFL. That ship sailed a long time ago. Joe’s point is simple: NFL contracts are based on continued production, not past accomplishments. Every franchise wants to see another great season before handing out $60+ million per year. That’s called smart roster management, not disrespect.

Funny how you accuse Joe of not knowing football while ignoring how this league actually works. Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott, Jared Goff, Jordan Love—they all had contract situations tied to recent performance. Baker isn’t being singled out.

And the whole “I’d leave if I were Baker” argument? Leave for what? Tampa resurrected his career, surrounded him with talent, gave him stability, and he has publicly said he loves being here. The Bucs have shown more belief in Baker than any organization before them. This isn’t about emotions or hurt feelings. It’s about timing, leverage, and salary-cap management. Teams don’t write blank checks because fans get sentimental.

Joe is discussing business. You’re arguing feelings. Those aren’t the same thing.

    🔥 LFG!
🏈 A perfect storm is brewing in TAMPA

  102. View from Outer Space Says:

Tired of Baker. Tired of Bowles. Tired of mediocre. Tired of billionaires wanting public money for stadium renovations. Sell the team. Move to Ottawa. Go away. Thank you. That is all.

But mostly tired of Baker’s contract discussion.

  103. Oneilbuc Says:

Browns fan. They didn’t do enough in free agency to be a superbowl team at this point. Baker is 32 years old next year with very young offensive players around him. And the defense is starting to get younger as well. The bucs has a up and coming team they’re not ready to win a championship right now. Let Baker go to a team that’s ready to win a championship so all he has to do is mange the games not go win them that’s the kind of quarterback Baker is now.

  104. Stpetematt Says:

The Bucs are far better than you think they are and so is Baker. They are a playoff caliber team right now on paper and any playoff team can win the Super Bowl if they get hot at the right time and are healthy. On the offense, everything flows from the greatness of the offensive line and they are healthy. On the defense, an improved and speedier middle and a dramatically improved pass rush will make things easier for the secondary and cause more turnovers and short fields. Instead of cutting them down or disassembling the team, why not pay our excellent QB and let the season play out?
