Todd Bowles Hints The Old Chris Godwin May Be Back

May 27th, 2026

Chris Godwin skies over A.J. Terrell for a touchdown catch last season.

Boy, it would sure help if the Bucs finally had a healthy Chris Godwin.

Godwin has regularly been dinged up in recent years. But when he has been fully healthy, he’s been just like the Chris Godwin we all know and love: dependable, dangerous, productive.

Asked about Godwin yesterday after the first open OTA practice of the spring, Todd Bowles raved about him.

“Chris has been great,” Bowles said of the longest tenured Bucs player. “He’s in great shape. He’s great.

“He’s healthy. He’s working out. He’s tough. He’s very smart. [Other Bucs receivers] rely on him for a lot of the mental part of it, and he’s very helpful that way.

“But he also makes plays and he looks good, man.”

A healthy Chris Godwin might just mean two or three wins just on his hands alone. Think of when he has been healthy how many clutch catches Godwin has made to keep the chains moving.

If Godwin is back to his old self, he will make Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan better. Even without Mike Evans, that’s a powerful receiver group.

People forgot real quick what a fully healthy Chris Godwin🤞does to defenses. He isn’t about fantasy numbers or highlight clips, he’s the guy that rips your heart out on 3rd and 7 all game long. Tough as nails, blocks like a tight end, catches everything, and sets the tone for the entire offense.

No Mike Evans? This offense goes as Godwin goes. If he’s truly healthy, our offense is gonna have that nasty edge again.

    Hold your breath..
McMillan and Eg23 are gonna eat because defenses are forced to key on CG. That man is still one of the most complete WRs in football and Bucs fans know it.

    LFG!

  2. Megoat13 Says:

My gut says Godwin is gonna be the guy but JMac is going to ball out.

  3. Gipper Says:

CG14 doesn’t stand on sideline counting how many targets he is getting. He doesn’t seem to mind watching the ball go to other WR’s. Team ultimately better off without ME13 whose speed had slowed. Going to be fun seeing how rookie comes along as downfield option.

  4. Borimex 813 Says:

Insert Z Rob’s Heavy 12 and 13 Personnel to establish physical dominance.
This allows him to shift tight ends around the formation to dictate matchups without tipping his hand on whether the play will be a run or a pass.

Instant upgrade to last year’s middle school play-calling.

    Pistol Zach is here, LFG!!

    @Gipper

    +2 Agreed

  6. Stpetematt Says:

My main question is if Hurst isn’t ready who is playing X? McMillan? Godwin will probably play in the slot a lot where he feasts. I know Egbuka is playing the Y “flanker” which gets the most targets in Robinson’s offense.

  7. Stpetematt Says:

    Err Z is the flanker.

  8. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

Godwin had way more receptions and yards than ME13 in Coens offense until he got hurt. I’m looking for him to lead this receivers group

  9. Pickgrin Says:

Godwin, EE, JMac, Hurst and Tez

That has to be one of the most talented 5 deep WR rooms in the league!

Godwin was almost unstoppable the first 7 games of 2024 when Liam was calling the plays….

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘If Godwin is back to his old self, just think how much better he will make Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan? Even without Mike Evans, that’s still a powerful receiver group.’

Love that last sentence, bottom line Joe. Add in Tez Johnson & Ted Hurst and we’ve got a quality WR room, even without Mike Evans. Baker has plenty of quality targets to throw to.

Still concerned a little about our TEs & RBs though. It’d be really nice if one of the TEs not named Otton would step up take some of the workload off Cade (he’s been getting far too many offensive snaps). It’d also be nice to add an experienced bigger back for goal line & short yardage packages especially (ya, and blocking too). Not at all comfortable with Bucky’s situation.

A healthy Godwin and healthy Cody Mauch news!
The optimism for this team is bubbling over….
now about the Bucky Irving speculation..

  12. Todd Says:

I would like to see more 2 TE sets with Otton and Culp on the field at the same time.

  13. Bojim Says:

Not worried at all with the WRs.

  14. LynchMob50 Says:

It was Bowles fault he got hurt in the first place. In a meaningless 4th quarter of yet another loss to a superior coach.

Godwin didn’t need to be in the game at that point. But all hail the guru.

Todd as the HC\DC is like hiring a CEO of a tobacco company to cure your lung cancer.

    Makes too much sense.

  15. JimBobBuc Says:

Having Chris in the game is huge for the run game. Chris’ blocking is very underrated and he should easily be a top 5 blocking WR. His downfield blocking leads to the big chunk runs by the RBs, like Bucky and Tucks big runs.

Coach BMac needs to show Chris’ blocking highlights to these young WRs and really push it this offseason.

    Wishing him a great year!

  17. ClayC Says:

I love this team but every year its the same timeline. Training camp has a deep and elite group of receivers. As the season goes on and receivers and go down one by one with injuries, we cant move the ball down the field with our depth receivers. The 2nd string and below cant get the separation needed for Baker to get the ball out quick. The same thing happened with the TB12.

The injuries on the O line the last couple of years is a root cause as well. Its not a coincidence that the year we won the SB we had the healthiest and most consistent O line that I have seen in my many years of Bucs fandom.

“Leave it to Lynchmob50names to poop in the pool!”

That’s a baby ruth floating in the pool.

Perhaps Bowles could take a bite to verify.

Give him a break from all the KitKats.

  20. Anyhony Says:

Wow, a sense of humor, there is hope for you!

  21. Erik with Clean Athletics™ Says:

Godwin looked really fast toward the end of the year last year.

Pulling away from defenders a few times after the catch…

If he stays healthy, he will be highly-productive. Just not at the X receiver position where Hurst is going to be playing most of the snaps.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

Will Zac keep CG14 in the slot or move him outside?…

Zac has all the weapons in the world to be successful….can he get it done?…we’ll see…

    GO BUCS!!!

  23. Jack Says:

Fantastic news on Chris. I love him being the vet of our WR group. Just the type we need to show the new guys how to do it.
