Baker Mayfield The Alpha Male

May 13th, 2026

Dying breed.

The NFL needs more Baker Mayfields.

That was the word from Bucs passing game coordinator T.J. Yates. Yesterday, as part of all Bucs offensive coaches being available to the local pen and mic club, Yates was asked how the Bucs can still allow Baker Mayfield to be his own man — a devil-may-care style of play while also getting Mayfield to protect himself and indirectly protect the Bucs.

Yates said there is a happy medium but he has zero desire to dilute any of the vinegar that makes Mayfield a dawg of a player.

In fact, Yates said the NFL needs more Baker Mayfields.

“It’s really, really hard because you look for guys like Baker that have that competitive edge, you have that something about them, that it-factor that, in my opinion, is kind of going away at the quarterback position in this league,” Yates said. “And it is so refreshing to see a guy that just, you know, he has that [Yates clenches a fist] in him, and what that does for the guys in the locker room and the offensive linemen, the team, the running back, everybody around him.

“You don’t see [quarterbacks who play like Mayfield] very often these days in the league, and it’s so awesome to see. And you know [Mayfield’s style of play] does have its detriments at some point, because you don’t want him to get hurt, you don’t want to get dinged up.”

Yates said Mayfield’s mentality is infectious.

“He’s gonna play no matter what,” Yates said. “Like you’re gonna have to drag that guy off the field, because that’s just his competitive nature. But, you know, he’s got to dial it back a little bit. Got to calm that competitive edge down, but you don’t want to take his [fire] away because that’s what makes him great. And that’s what makes the rest of the team great.”

Yates was then asked why quarterbacks who play with so much grit like Mayfield are becoming rare in the NFL. He suggested too many quarterbacks are “softer” and “mildly-mannered” and thought that due to the pressures of social media have become a “little too sensitive.”

Then Yates almost got whimsical about Mayfield.

“Baker is one of the last of a dying breed of those alpha quarterbacks,” Yates said. “Baker is just different.”

Mayfield’s style is contagious on the team. Joe’s seen plenty of times where Mayfield ran over a linebacker, or when he stiff-armed Nick Bosa for a wild conversion late in the game, after which the Bucs defense nearly jumped onto the field because they were so jacked over the play.

The sad thing about all of this is,when Mayfield gets hurt, not only is he not a top-shelf quarterback, he may actually hinder the team. The evidence came last year after the bye.

But Joe would rather have the fiery Mayfield than the quarterback he would become if you ripped out his soul.

Strange that posters here to claim to be all knowledgeable about football think Baker is a bum. And they claim they go back to the Jack Thompson era. How soon they forget.

  2. Stpetematt Says:

Mayfield does slide sometimes. I’d like to see him throw the ball away a bit more if the play isn’t there on first or second down. Don’t try to force the ball through a 3 inch window. Even on third down if ahead and there’s nothing available. And of course always slide on a run on first or second down. Make stuff like that a priority…

If the QB, the O-Line, the D-line and the secondary stay relatively healthy we will win a lot of games. Very good backups for each of those are crucial. I think we are pretty set everywhere except another corner wouldn’t hurt.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

Baker definitely hurt his throat when he choked in DEC lol…

his poor play after being “hurt” wasnt all physical….he made tons of poor decision down the stretch…

lets see if he can finally out it all together and get the BUCS to an NFC Championship game…NO EXCUSES for him or Bowles

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. LynchMob50 Says:

The NFL needs more QB’s incapable of handling the big moments when the season is on the line????

Hard pass. We’ve seen where all the heroics have landed us.

Given that he’s in the worst division in football and has backed into two playoff appearances with only one win, it just doesn’t qualify him as an elite QB.

The two best QB’s in Bucs history (Brad Johnson and Tom Brady) won because they weren’t trying to be reckless cowboys.

Plus, they knew how to perform under the ultimate pressure in the biggest games.

In that realm, Mayfield just isn’t the guy. And probably never will be.

  5. Geno712 Says:

It’s a fine line between alpha grit and unregulated chaos.

You know who else had that grit to him, James Winston.

You’ve got the Joe’s, the coaches and the fans sitting there, hypnotized by the vinegar talk. Jameis didn’t just have vinegar; he had a whole gallon of industrial strength acid sloshing around his head. My gosh, he would stand there in front of a bunch of grown men and start chewing his fingers.

I see a pattern in Bucs QB’s that us fans get behind too easily. Guys that don’t get it done in the end.

Look at all that Alpha energy! Look at that vinegar! They want to win! Some may call it infectious. I call it a rash. That devil may care style where the devil comes back at the biggest moments.

  6. Stpetematt Says:

The Bucs do not have an international game this year. The Saints and Falcons both do, however.

  7. Truth be Told Says:

I have been saying it since he got here how lucky we are to have him fall in our lap. Now let’s get “Born Again” Baker signed before the season starts so we don’t have to hear about it all season and position the nucleus of this team for years to come. Maybe just maybe all these new faces on Defense will make Todd look like he actually knows what he is doing. lol

  8. LANshark Says:

The best thing you can do to cut down Baker’s injuries is have an offensive line that does not have swinging gates at the Guard position. Hopefully, Bredeson, Mauch, and Schrauth can be that. And the rest of the guards never see the field.

The best way to cut down Baker’s interceptions is to have a defense that can get off the field on 3rd and 28…

  9. ocala Says:

50 years of history tells me there is a 50/50 chance that the owners blow it.

  13. 3.28.Evans Says:

He’s horrible in prime time, he’s proven that when the games really matter and a critical play is needed to win, he makes that critical play for the opponent and loses. Interceptions, fumbles, errant passes, eating sacks, poor decisions. He’s a cartoon character.

I was a supporter. He proved me wrong.

  14. Bama Rich Says:

@LynchMob50, Do you have a better option?

  15. Bee Says:

Baker Mayfield ranks 22nd of 24 qualifying QBs on adjusted completion percentage on throws 10-19 yards in the air, per PFF

18th of 26 qualifying on throws 20+ air yards

Remember, adjusted comp % is completions + drops and not counting throwaways/tipped balls.

Why does the NFL need more QBs like this? Keep the puff pieces coming Joe, Bake needs all the encouragement he can get.

  16. Sal Volatile Says:

The owners are not football people. They apparently never played football at least not at a high school or college level. They are financial business people. Therefore it is logical to assume any decision they make is based on finance and business modeling. Those decisions are cold and calculating with self interest coming first.

Based on what I have looked into Baker should get something near 50mil/4 years. I will be surprised if he gets that here in Tampa. I believe duration will matter more to Baker than dollars. Duration signals “You really are our guy”. That’s what Baker needs to hear, not words said but words written in contract form. The written word is 90% more effective than the spoken word. Just ask ME13. I don’t believe any sleep was lost by the owners over his departure. Jason drafted him and he probably feels some sadness but business is business and the owners run the business.

  17. Not a good look Says:

If Baker is alpha, what does that make Brock Purdy then? I’ll hang up and listen….

  18. Erik with Clean Athletics™ Says:

Baker is kind of a fusion of Jeff Garcia, Jameis Winston, and Tom Brady.

We just need more of the Tom Brady and Jeff Garcia elements on a regular basis, and less of the Jameis Winston crap.

  19. Stpetematt Says:

When was this measured Bee? Who was he throwing to? Baker is very accurate. For details, watch the Seattle game last year. Baker’s accuracy falls off when he’s under siege. Like when both 1st and 2nd string guards are out for the year. I’ll bet his stats in 2024 were excellent. O-line was healthy. It’s a completely different game when you cannot step into your passes.

  20. Show Me Your TDs Says:

  21. What it is Says:

813, we all can tell you never played the game but when you are hurt as many times as Lavonte David said he WAS HURT it causes you to change the way you think in the heat of the moment. But like I said, you know nothing about any of that. Baker IS the alpha qb and we have him and it will be for a while!!!! PART-A!!!??

  22. What it is Says:

Stpete, Bee will never figure anything about “football talent” out. He just don’t know what he don’t know and that will never change but Baker IS HERE and WILL BE HERE FOR A LONG TIME!!!? $50 MILLION A YEAR FOR A MINIMUM OF 3 YEARS.

  23. Steve V. Says: Says:

Hopefully with Gainwell and the team stays healthy, he won’t feel he has to take chances ,run the ball controll the clock and everything will fall into place! Football has been like that since the dawn of time

  24. Steve V. Says: Says:

Every QB,s accuracy falls off when they’re ” under siege ” It doesn’t take Einstein to figure that one out!

Interesting to me that folks use last year’s OLine as an excuse for so many things, including Baker’s injuries apparently. Equally interesting though that in 17 games in each of his 3 years here, Baker was sacked 40 times in 2023 & also 2024, but only 36 times in 2025. OLine apparently did a little something right.

Also intrigues me that the defense gets zapped for being responsible for some of Baker’s ‘issues’. Looking at your comment, the Bucs’ defense allowed 92 third down conversions in 2023 and 80 in 2024, but only 79 in 2025. So in that perspective, they improved every year. Bucs’ defense had some real ‘issues’ themselves in 2025, but 3rd down conversions wasn’t one of them.

And BTW, Bucs’ defense has ZERO to do with Baker throwing interceptions (our defense was sorta kinda sitting on the bench when Baker opts to throw the ball to the other team?). Just for info, Baker threw 16 INTs in 2024 (his ‘good year’), but only 11 INTs in 2025 (his ‘bad year’). Baker had a lot of company in terms of INTs though. For instance, Bryce Young also threw 11 INTs, as did Patrick Mahomes & Bo Nix. Trevor Lawrence threw 12, Justin Herbert threw 13, Sam Darnold threw 14 INTs and Tua threw 15. But the winner was … Geno Smith with 17 INTs last year. QBs like Josh Allen, Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott & Joe Flacco all threw 10 INTs. Baker didn’t do all that bad.

  28. Saskbucs Says:

Still waiting to hear of a better option from the detractors.

They sure like to bash Baker but it’s been crickets on the replacement front.

People ragging on Baker about not being clutch… pretty sure he had to score to win games in the last minute like 3 times to start last season and he got it done.

It’s there, he needs to control his gun slinger impulses at times and stay healthy. That’s it. He does that and Robinson proves a better play caller than Grizz… I bet you turkeys won’t be complaining then.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Baker was mostly terrible after ‘WEEK 6 MVP’ chants went to his head. In week 7, vs the Lions, he was awful. Week 8 vs the Saints, because the defense singlehandedly won the game, people forget that Baker had a bad game that week as well.

So we was bad well before the bye.

    ———-

Baker already has the job for 2026, it’s up to him to prove he deserves to keep the job, and he has every chance in the world to do so.

But if he falls flat on his face yet again, then you move on already. The Bucs have wasted years now in a cupcake division watching Baker choke in the biggest situations. He needs to put together a full season and actually win some meaningful games – if he does that, then he’ll be here for a long time.

mentioning Bakers performance in DEC isnt bashing him…its stating facts…saying that his INTs are due to him being a gun slinger or moxy or injures is all BS…

bottom line is, if he wins enough this year, he’ll be paid….not if he’s gone and BUCS will have a new QB

“@LynchMob50, Do you have a better option?”

Nothing can be changed for 2026 so this season is already a failed mission.

Only thing left are the results of the inept scheme of Bowles. And Baker not being clutch.

My preference is to get a true franchise QB in the draft with a solid veteran backup to teach the kid how to play.

Winston was a fraud from the beginning and I saw it a mile away. The Glazers did not and they paid for it with zero playoff games.

Malcom Glazer was the perfect blend of business man and football mind. He gathered the right people around him to get to the apex of the NFL. And he did not settle for anything less than a title. He went for it. All in!

That has to be the mindset going forward. Not worrying about feelings being hurt. You’re either good enough or you’re gone.

Baker will never be that man. Move on and don’t stop until we have title #3.

    As TB12 would say: LFG!!!

  35. Sal Volatile Says:

For those that laboriously search for statistics to build their case that Baker is no good, I say this; The quarterback is a cog in the wheel. Baker runs the ball when he feels he needs to run the ball. Otherwise his job is to hand the ball to a runner or pass the ball to a receiver. The QB may have some control at the line of scrimmage over play calls but he doesn’t develop game plans or call plays. He has no control over the play of others. He has no control over the defense. He has no control over the HC or major game decisions made by the HC. Perhaps his “footwork” isn’t the best but his arm strength is very good and he can throw darts. But most important of all is his heart and demeanor and leadership qualities.

With some improvements and good luck at other elements of the team Baker’s story might be much different. It is a team sport. The Bucs went to the SB with Brad Johnson and won. Various factors came into play for him to become a SB winning QB. He was regarded as a journeyman QB. Place whatever ranking on Baker that you will but he’s better than most and not a journeyman.

The next contract for Baker may perhaps unfairly define him and place him into the journeyman category by the media. Baker must know this and that is why I believe he likely won’t accept less than 4 years. Knowing that confidence has been placed in him will boost his own confidence and elevate his play. That is to say if he has players around him.

  36. Pops Malone Says:

2-7 record down the stretch last year speaks for itself. He contributed to it as much as the rest of the team. The real good QB’s in this league remain consistent game in and game out and year in and year out……lets see if he can bounce back from that this season. Are you a leader and a good QB Baker? The time to prove that you are is right now, this season. I’ll be watching closely. I have doubts about you and all of your leadership and hunger, blah blah. Please prove me wrong. Prove it.

  37. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

  38. Sal Volatile Says:

So much of what is being said about Baker is the easiest to say.
    It’s easy to be negative.
It’s easy to be a parrot.
It’s easy to find all sorts of statistics meaningless relevant or not.
It’s easy to be an armchair football analyst.
It’s easy to feel important when you are anonymous.

The easiest thing of all is to be “just a fan” and take the positives to heart. The players on the team are just men. Constructive criticism is fair. If the players are doing their best and that’s usually obvious then support them. Trying to tear them down in a comment section does nothing for them, it only satisfies your need for negativity.

  39. Sal Volatile Says:

The players are very well paid to provide entertainment for those that enjoy the show. However, in the grand scheme of things they are nothing more than chattel to the owners. That’s something the fans should take into account. Be critical but not brutal.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

    BAKER IS THE NFL MVP*!!!!!!!!

*Comment valid only through Week 6. Does not apply to primetime or playoff games. Additional exceptions may apply.

  41. Sal Volatile Says:

For decades the Bucs lacked a “franchise quarterback” and the fans yearned for one. Now they have one but to many of the so called fans he just isn’t good enough.

That’s not the definition of a franchise QB

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Exciting news for the Baker Boi(s), Netflix is bringing back ‘Quarterback’ for season 3, and one of the 4 QBs listed, right after Joe Flacco, is Baker motherfudging Mayfield. OH YEAH!

  44. Rod Munch Says:

If you don’t think Baker isn’t a franchise QB after hearing the news he’ll be featured as one of four players on season 3 of Netflix ‘Quarterback’ – you’re just a hater. The news really doesn’t get any bigger than that – and proves everyone wants him on all their screens!

  45. Bucblind II Says:

Rod Munch? says Baker doesn’t play good in the playoffs. Meanwhile back in reality Baker has the all time career playoff passer rating record. You know that metric that the NFL uses to grade quarterback play. Yes we have that guy!! We just need to build the team up where we are weak, Baker will play up to his playoff record and we will be unbeatable.

  46. Well well well Says:

Sal you are 100% correct, their need to feel important through their negativity. They truly are weak people that probably go through life being negative about everything they touch. Anyone that loves football would love to be a teammate of Bakers. Just like his teammate feel about him now. They would run through a wall for him. As soon as we fill the holes we will go deep into the playoffs. This is where good coaching comes in to play.

    ————

Literally no one with an IQ over 70 quotes passer rating, it’s been a broken for decades after QBs realized they can pump up their stats (and future contracts) by just dumping off the ball for 6 yards on 3rd and 13. Meanwhile, QBR, which takes into account things like throwing well short of the 1st down marker on 3rd and 4th down plays says Baker is a middling QB.

In any case, no need to argue about stats – instead just look at performance.

Baker, since coming to Tampa, 2-9 in primetime and playoff games.

    Last two playoff games…

@ Lions, 2 mins left, 3 TO’s, down by a single score, Baker has the ball — and immediately throws an INT and the game is over.

vs Redskins, defense makes a huge 4th quarter goal line stand, gives the ball back to the offense with a chance to go up two scores, put the game away — and Baker immediately fumbles the ball, losing the game.

    Or last year…

vs Miami, season on the line, a must win game… Baker comes out and plays probably his worst game in Tampa considering who he was playing and what the stakes were. Throws 3 awful INTs, doesn’t give the Bucs a chance. But hey, he got some late garbage time stats after the Dolphins went to prevent, so I’m sure you’re hyped about that!

This is like the class bully calling the smart kids nerds, because their intellectual prowess makes the dolt feel insignificant. That’s what I’m reading in this room

All this in defense of ONE PLAYER lmaooooooo you guys are doing a bang job shielding Baker Mayfield from hearing opinions he probably doeasn’t care about, but

The way some of you are talking it sound more like Heaven’s Gate/Branch Davidians level stuff and it’s a weird read.

You want people to stop being negative about Mayfield, try send a messenger pigeon to his residence to tell him “stop putting that BS on tape”

  54. What it is Says:

See WBL is a perfect example of no critical thinking abilities. He can’t “think” so he makes stupid statements that has no truth in them. Example: you want people to stop being negative about Mayfield. Not one, not one time has anyone ever said or insinuated they want people to stop being negative. Be critical all you want but keep it honest. That’s what you boys have a hard time with. And as long as you continue to not be honest with your comments, you’ll be stung. That will never change. Keep it real or be stung. It’s up to you.

  55. Sal Volatile Says:

Now think very carefully Roddy boy. What’s wrong with that ?

  56. Bucblind II Says:

So now Munch says the NFL doesn’t have a total accumulated IQ of 70. That’s amazing. I am quite sure the NFL uses the “their” passer rating since they invented and adopted it. Yes it is an official statistic used to measure quarterback efficiency-It is the standard. But that’s Munch. He thinks he can say whatever, no matter how silly it is and everyone will believe him.

  57. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Sal, you’re talking about support while remaining blind to things that might make people not support and telling people they’re not fans because they don’t feel the same as you about ONE player. It’s laughable.

You were also in a contract thread talking about ownership slighting Mayfield which proved you didn’t really do any research on what you’re talking about and spinning it as a lack of respect.

Lack of respect doesn’t re-structure a contract that beforehand had $0 guaranteed dollars in 2026

Lack of respect doesn’t turn a $30M roster bonus THIS YEAR, it got paid out March 20th due to the restructure, but the Glazers are about making money and not football people, are you kidding me? When they get their $400M tv deal checks at the start of the season, do you think they care if you think they’re football people or not?

Lack of respect, doesn’t justify paying more for Baker Mayfield in ‘26 than the Seahawks are paying Sam Darnold in ‘26 POST-SB win with a new deal. In fact, as business people that makes even less sense, but they did it clearly because they want to reward him. Outside of that, they owe him NOTHING. $40M and the opportunity to show up and show out 2026. If Baker can’t ring that bell “we paid him. Gave him the opportunity. We wish him luck” and I’ll be around when the Bucs still exist post-Mayfield.

You do a great job wording your posts; and driving your point home, but that doesn’t make you impervious to being wrong or under informed.

No it does not. I hope I am wrong in my thesis/supposition that Baker won’t be offered a contract of his liking.

You are enjoying playing monopoly with the owners money.
    I’m just applying critical thinking.

  59. Bucblind II Says:

The NFL prefers to use hard, objective data-PASSER RATING, not subjective data. ESPN’s secret, proprietary data, QBR, will never be used by the NFL. Its the subjective data that the NFL will never like. It’s easier to twist and change the meaning of the statistics using the QBR. It is exactly why Munch likes it. Statistics lie and liars use statistics. This is exactly why the NFL doesn’t use it and why Munch does.

There’s no “contract of his liking” that’s put up or leave money THIS YEAR all that other stuff you’re talking about, feelings and emotions is window dressing

Baker HATERS and the Baker BOYS all lack objectivity! When it comes to tha actual game, each will watch, record and analyze each play over and over. Doing so to justify their feelings about the “midget” QB or that alpha male! Non of us mere mortals ever watch team preparations for any game. We never see the structure used in preparation for the game, any discipline during the preparation or the lack of self discipline exhibited in practice! If structure and discipline are absent, whom is held accountable. The same could be asked about the game itself too.
From college thru the pros, Baker’s success has occurred when he sees/has structure and self discipline. When one or both are absent, chaos puts his universe out of whack. Passes are either under or over thrown, fumbles happen and team loses.
Baker’s future with the Bucs rest in his performance during the 17 game schedule! If the Bucs finish 12-6, win the division, he’s back. The Bucs finish 9-8 and win the south, he’s not offered and gone! Like him or hate him, the upcoming season and success all falls on his shoulders.

I agree with this completely – although I think if he finishes 9-8 and the Bucs make the playoffs, then likely he’d still be back as the Bucs.

However if the Bucs miss the playoffs then that probably means Baker didn’t play well and Bowles is getting fired, and it’s unlikely a new coach would want a QB that in the previous two seasons got the entire offensive staff fired in one year, then followed it up by getting the entire coaching staff fired the next year.

But who knows. In any case, short of Baker taking a really low-ball offer, I don’t see any benefit in signing him early when he’s under contract and you could always use the franchise tag if you had to.

Let me tell you some Tampa Bay Buccaneers history since I know you Baker Boi(s) are all new to the team.

On the eve of the 99/00 NFC Championship game vs the Rams, their local St Louis newspaper ran a headline saying ‘We ain’t afraid of no Bucs’, or something along those line. You see what they did there, and why us Bucs fans mocked them? That started a long tradition of Bucs fans, like me, sarcastically using double negatives.

So let me ask you… what does it mean to use a double negative in a sarcastic post? Am I making a point, or being sarcastic?

Well if you’re a real Bucs fan, then what is the issue with saying Baker should be the starter this year and lets see what he does?

If he plays well, the team wins, and he gets a new deal.

If he stinks again, like he did from week 7 on last year, then Bowles is getting fired and any new coach is almost certainly not going to want a QB that just got everyone fired.

I’m rooting for the little fella to do well because I want the Bucs to win. What I don’t want is for the Bucs to rush to lock up a guy already under contract, only to see him play like he did for the last 10 games last year.

So far he’s had one good season and he’s choked in every big game when the game is on the line or the closed the game out. I don’t think no real bucs fan hates Baker Mayfield just because we don’t put on rose color glasses for him like you Baker fan boys do . If BAKER plays good and we get to a Conference championship then yeah resing him and still draft a quarterback in the first round next year to sit behind him that’s a perfect situation. Baker will be 32 years old next year and the bucs has to prepare for the future because Baker has never been elite in his career and that’s a fact regardless how good the team was around him. But stop with the hate talk for Baker Mayfield because we didn’t care about Baker before he became a buc . He was never talked about or even a thought before he came here. It’s time for him to be more clutch in big games and big moments when he have to be.

Baker Mayfield won the 2017 Heisman Trophy as a senior quarterback for the University of Oklahoma, receiving 2,398 points in one of the most lopsided victories in the award’s history. He secured 732 first-place votes, accounting for 86% of the total possible points, which was the third-highest percentage in Heisman history at the time.
    ^^^^^

So you are saying not one of us Bucs fans happened to notice this “minor” accomplishment.

You are implying that when I suggested Baker might become the Bucs version of Drew Brees that I had such a limited bank of sports knowledge that I knew not what I was talking about.

How could I have made that statement had I not followed both Brees and Mayfield’s careers from early on and saw the similarities?

You muss be roddys evil twin. Another imposter.

  77. Attaboy Says:

  78. Oneilbuc Says:

Sal. One thing I do know is I’ve never seen you here but winning a Heisman trophy in college does not win Superbowls in the NFL. Jamies was the youngest to ever win the Heisman trophy and Johnny Menzel and others. Jamies actually won a national championship Baker ain’t never played in one. And Jamies didn’t pan out in Tampa I will say because he was asked to do way more than what Baker is asked to do here the past 3 years. Jamies was was damend to win a championship with a worser team in at the time was in the one of best division at the time. Jamies came in when the Panthers won 15 games and Cam Newton was the MVP and they made it to the super bowl. The next year Matt Ryan MvP and the falcons played in the Superbowl and we actually won 9 games that year. And the bucs defense was ranked 32 in every category of the defense with a 30 ranked running game and a trash offensive line and yet he was demand to win a Superbowl. And now Baker Mayfield is playing in the worse division with a better defense and running game and he’s not asked to throw 45 to 50 times a game and for the past 3 years Baker has thrown picks to lose games and still he gets every excuse in the book. Baker has it much easier than the last quarterback and he has no pressure on him to win anything like Jamies was demand to do . Baker can throw picks and lose games and the defense gets blamed for it lol ?. And now you got people saying to pay him more money with more years? Lol ?? if the bucs do it it’s ok with me because I my expartation will be very low. We will become the Detroit Lions Superbowl defense good weapons on offense and a top o line but the quarterback will keep us from winning or going to a Superbowl just like Golf is doing right now with the Lions.

BBBB, from his college days and into the NFL, Baker has always depended on structure and discipline to be successful. The discipline he received at OU for his alcohol incident was a wake-up call. Afterwards, he stayed focused and produced numbers that led him to won the Heisman! Fast forward to the NFL and no discipline unless you would call regulated to defensive end on the scout team for the Panthers. Most thought he had found the perfect team, the Bucs. Again, where is the structure and most of all, where is the discipline! 2026, is a make or break year and it all falls on Baker. If he succeeds, all the old timers should be happy! If he fails, they can crow to the Baker boys a loud shout out I TOLD YOU SO!

  82. Sal Volatile Says:

Mayfield has been dinged by some for his 6-foot-1 stature, but the Heisman Trophy winner finished his college career as the most efficient arm in NCAA history, sporting a titanic passer rating of 131.1 to go along with a 69.8 completion percentage over 40 appearances as a Sooner.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Baker survived Cleveland (a notorious franchise) and additional insult from Carolina.
He then was called to duty in a hurry by none other than Sean McVay and delivered with almost no preparation for a Thurs. night game win.

Baker was asked to prove it on a 1 year deal here in Tampa.
He did just that and followed it up while dealing with a new OC each year along with a decimated O-line and a questionable head coach and a degree of team turmoil and injuries to his running back and receivers along with injuries to himself.

And unless there is progress behind the scenes on a mutually favorable contract extension he is being asked to prove it again.

Do the owners really care about their Quarterback ?
Do the owners not recognize what they really have ?

This is a turning point for the owners. Their current dilemma can be traced back, in my opinion, to the TB12/BA/BL fiasco.

I checked and Baker will indeed be on the Netflix show this summer.

That must have a big impact on the owners. If they let him get away and he plays elsewhere wearing a different jersey on that show it will not look good for them.

The clock is ticking and the pendulum just swung toward Baker.

Please he’s no alpha male just a rah rah guy who can play football. Any team Baker is on will always flirt with just being not good enough to win much of anything. He makes enough mistakes to counteract the great things he does do and at the worst times. His “great” stats are smoke and mirrors because a good portion of it is from a others have said garbage time. Half the time he plays horribly for 2 or 3 quarters then “catches fire”. Stats are for losers and that why his pom pom bois use them to bolster their viewpoint. You guys are an illogical lot.

I say what I mean and I mean what I say.

Neither you nor I really know what happened behind the scenes with the team. You are assessing blame based on what you perceive to be the cause. That’s a false assumption.

Was Baker off his game in the later part of the season ? Yes.
Do you know how hurt or how much pain he was in ? NO
When the coaches watched the film after a game do you know what they concluded ? NO
When the play calling was assessed do you know what was concluded ? NO

So in other words neither you nor I know Jack **** about what really happened. Therefore it is wrong to lay blame without all the facts.

  92. Obvious Says:

These are your words: “he was off his game”

    I agree with you.

I also agree with you that I don’t know why and you don’t know why. But we both agree that he was “off his game”

So by what logic do you give him a market setting contract for being off his game?

  93. Sal Volatile Says:

What some here fail to realize is this; Aside from Brady, Baker Mayfield some might argue is one of the best if not the best QB this team has ever had. I suspect most of Baker’s critics can’t reach back more than 25 or 30 years at most and many much less than that.

    Goodness.

Well I appreciate your second to last post because it sums up what many fans think which is because mediocrity is better than what we’ve had historically, we have to settle for it. That’s not anywhere near correct.

For years chief fans thought they couldn’t find a franchise qb, until they could.

Baker is a solid/good qb, but he’s not great not anywhere near a franchise qb. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.

As for illogical….try answering my last question about logic. I suspect you won’t or probably aren’t emotionally capable of it.

  96. Oscar Says:

Great job Sal Volatile! You not only win this debate or whatever anyone wants to call it, you have also managed somehow to diffuse the level of hostility normally displayed by some of the most volatile anti Baker posters. 97. 3.28.Evans Says:

    In summary:

Mayfield played like dung for the last 10 or 11 games of the 2025 season with a few flashes here and there.

    He is under contract now.

It would be dumb to do anything now other than tell him to fix his gag reflex in the biggest moments of the biggest games. And that’s not happened yet, so…..

  98. What it is Says:

As usual big bucs says the most ridiculous thing again. He says Baker never can keep the good he does going. He always counteracts it with bad. I guess my memory of him taking a 1-41 team to their first playoff game in like 200 years was a good thing but didn’t really happen. Or maybe beating Mahomes in 2021 with that same god awful team was equally good was just a dream after all. Yeah I know, you’ll say he didn’t beat Mahomes but you won’t be telling the truth because he did beat him. The refs HAD to get involved and take away a TD in order for the score to show he didn’t, but oh he did and anyone being honest knows he did. So yeah, you can bet Baker brings out the stupid in this guy. Maybe taking a team that was supposed to win 4 games and wins 10 and the playoffs was a really good thing. Baker has done amazing things on really bad teams but you have to not hate the guy to see the good things?

  99. toopanca Says:

There were many games last year where White and Tucker would get two touches out of three and the Bucs would march right down the field and score. The next drive, they would go three and out on all passes.

Other times, they would run the ball two touches out of three until they crossed midfield, and then they would throw four straight passes with two incompletions and two sacks.

It was so predictable that they were going to pass the ball that teams were just teeing off on Baker.

Pass protection takes a particular skill set as well as established teamwork. The OL backups last year mostly had skill sets better suited for run blocking which, as long as you can make a combo block, is not as dependent upon established teamwork; specially when you are running outside zones and letting White and Tucker do what they did best last year.
