Josiah Trotter Has A Shot At “Defensive Rookie Of The Year” Award

May 7th, 2026

Bucs rookie LB Josiah Trotter.

He said there’s a chance.

Though ESPN NFL analyst Ben Solak isn’t dropping coin at a Pennsylvania casino on Bucs rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter winning the NFL “Defensive Rookie of the Year” award, Solak thinks Trotter does have a chance.

The first thing Trotter has to do, typed Solak, is prove he’s better than veteran new Bucs inside linebacker Alex Anzalone. No small feat.

But with Trotter’s attitude and his ferocious downhill-attack mentality, Solak believes folks shouldn’t dismiss Trotter making a major impact with the Bucs defense.

Josiah Trotter, LB, Buccaneers: … Trotter’s unique skill in college was his burst and unreal football instincts to create tackles at or near the line of scrimmage. He’s in the race for the award, especially if he shows during camp that he can play faster than the aging Anzalone.

Does Joe believe Trotter could be a star rookie? It’s way, way, way too early. How about waiting till the guy first puts pads on in late July?

If the Bucs have a 10-win-or-more season, that tells Joe the defense is playing well and that means the Bucs’ rookies on defense, including Trotter, are playing well.

Who knows, maybe Rueben Bain, Keionte Scott and Trotter will cancel each other out of Defensive Rookie of the Year votes because all three are playing strong ball.

  1. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

If Trotter can etch out a spot opposite of Anzalone and be effective on all 3 downs, he’s going to have alot of action funneled his way playing in this defense.

Take his ability as a blitzer which is probably the most immediate aspect of his game that’ll translate as a pro and Bowles tendency to fire his guys into the box run/pass, the opportunities will be there.

I’m looking forward to seeing the Trotter family axe chop a few times in 2026.

  2. Truth be Told Says:

Any True Bucs fan that understands this Team’s Achilles heel has been that Putrid Pass Defense can’t deny that the Front Office has really attacked the problem by bringing a bunch of new faces that offer promise going forward. Maybe it just might show that with better talent-Todd’s defense might just be good enough to take us places with a Top-notch Offense embedded.

  3. Hodad Says:

I think we should watch him play a game before crowning his arsenal. What about Bain? An ILB would need to pick off some passes, or get a bunch of sacks to get that award. Racking up tackles isn’t enough. I think the safety Dallas drafted has a good chance. Than again, he’d have get some picks.

  4. WillieG Says:

I’m trying to not get excited about any player. How many times have we all eagerly anticipated a rookie’s first season only to lose him to injury before the season even starts? It seems like it happens every year, so I’m going to assume at least one rookie won’t be available Day 1.

  5. Todd Says:

Every Player that is a Rookie has a chance at Defensive ROY.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

My prediction – Every single player the Bucs just drafted will all receive “Rookie of the Year” awards.

    LFG!!!!!!!

  7. football 1 Says:

I guess it is Spring and all 32 teams have ROY on their team.
Yes before we crown him , let’s see him have a few good practices. LOL, just a little early guys. However, yes let’s hope he is a cut above Britt and Dennis.

  8. buc4evr Says:

Give me a huge break. This rookie has not even taken the first snap in training camp. I do not even want to think about him getting ROTY at this point. In fact Bowles will probably use the poor guy in coverage on third downs. lol.

  9. Lefty Says:

Give it to him…this team keeps giving Bowles a job – complete with an extension – for no valid reason….

  10. Jmarkbuc Says:

Technically all rookies have a chance at ROY awards

  11. Drew Says:

Drafting Bain / Trotter has the potential to parallel the Sapp / Brooks draft.

  12. MelvinJunior Says:

Well, yeah… I guess they all have a SHOT.

  13. Lakeland Says:

    Somebody has to win it

    So why not Josiah Trotter

  14. Still Coconut Doughnut Says:

Plus his arms are really long so he’s probably going to be an All Pro

  15. KABucs Says:

We are just hitting the NFL doldrums of news.
You have to be a little patient with the news topics. Once the final camp is done and we’re in that period where we are waiting for camp to begin, then it really gets bad.
No one knows what type of season any rookie or player will have in 2026.
Screw any awards, I just want people to stay healthy.

  16. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    “Somebody has to win it

    So why not Josiah Trotter”

Carson Schwesinger won it last year as an off ball LB with 145 comb tackles, 2.5 sacks, 11 TFLs, 3 PBUs & 2 INTs. Got 40 of 50 votes over guys like Emmanwori, Pearce jr, Xavier Watts, and Abdul Carter. ILBs see alot of action

  17. Crazyhorse54 Says:

I agree Bain/ Trotter have the potential to parallel Brooks/Sapp. What I’m looking to hear from them in time is that they are unwilling to give up a blade of grass to the opponent.

  18. 3.28.Evans Says:

LOL. Like KJ Britt only worse in pass coverage. Rookie of the year, hahaha.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

yeah, i believe in the kid…i think he’s going to be solid as a rookie and continue to get better….

    GO BUCS!!!

  20. Ash Says:

Can trotter be a star absolutely that’s why you draft the players you don’t draft them because you think they are bad time will tell on that one but he is a hammer looking for a nail and I love that about him love thats how the defense is heading more aggressive more if you ain’t my teammate I hate him I’m so excited about Bain lol

  21. Gipper Says:

Feel real good about the defensive help that Licht has lined up through FA and draft. Would feel better if Jim Schwartz were hired to be DC. This is a sensible move allowing Todd B to just be HC.

    Somebody has to win it

    So why not Josiah Trotter

Why not a hundred other rookies this year. I know Joe needs to gin up articles like this in this interim part of the season. But, this is kind of a stupid article. And, it brings out stupid comments.

  23. Todd Says:

I’m all for retiring his number at halftime of our first home game.

  24. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

It’s always funny reading the comments of people who have no opinion on the subject of an article, but makes it clear how much the dislike the comments that actually add something to the conversation.

Would you like to speak to management Mr.Karen?

  25. bakertilidie Says:

HMM. Been awhile. The “mini” rebuild, I said should happen. Did. With the exception of Bowles son, as asst dc( said we needed, flat out didnt want a clone). Draft and free agency, awesome. New conditioning coach. We shall see. However, defense, should be 100% better. Next, Mayfield, extended. probably, 4 years, maybe 5. around 43 mill per, if guaranteed, sterling shepard back. Take it as gospel.

  26. Steven007 Says:

Oregon, I get what you’re saying. But sometimes Joe has as many articles in one day as his biggest competitor has in one week. That’s why we’re here. Are some of the articles superfluous or ginned up as you say? Of course. But far more content on our favorite team is right here. And amongst the eye rolling trolls like aqua above cosplaying as 328, you’ll always get some decent comments as well.

  27. Lakeland Says:

Josiah Trotter has an equal opportunity to win DROY

    So why not him?
Give me a legitimate reason why he can’t win it

  28. #99 the Big Fella Says:

I think this kid is going to surprise a lot of people I look forward to seeing him on the field

  29. Steven007 Says:

Lakeland, no one saying he can’t win it. I’m rooting for him just like I am his teammate. Bain. But there were plenty of other defensive rookies aside from those two. They all theoretically have the same chance. Hopefully if our guys can get some traction early the team will get behind them on some kind of campaign.

  30. Scott Says:

He has to secure the starting job first

  31. Lakeland Says:

    Exactly Steven007

But the article isn’t about every rookie NFL defender.
The article is about Josiah Trotter having a chance to win
An established NFL Analyst ( Ben Solak) wrote this

If this was a negative article about Trotter
This site would be flooded with negative reasons why he can’t win
But, because Ben Solak said he have a chance at winning the award

    It’s a stupid article

    I’m just stating the obvious

  32. Steven007 Says:

Got it. Your criticism is more about the article. In that context, I agree, stupid article. He could basically have taken any rookie from the first three or four rounds and thrown a dart at them and written the same article.

  33. Lakeland Says:

    Steven007

It’s a great article by Ben Solak
    Praising one of our rookies

But one of these fake Bucs fans called it a stupid article

  34. Badbucs Says:

Is it October yet? Writing articles for pure hopium and speculation based on nothing. At least the OTAs will provide some slight amount of actual information.

  35. Beeej Says:

The article implies he and Anzelone WON’T be the 2 starting ILB’s?

  36. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Writing articles for pure hopium and speculation based on nothing.”

It’s literally based on player evaluation, which is a pretty huge deciding factor in these guys getting drafted to play pro football. That’s what the speculation is based on, a projected fit in our defense. It’s not like Solak said he’ll have x-amount of tackles or x-amount of sacks, just simply if Trotter can play as fast as Anazlone he can compete for DROY, why? ILBs see a crap ton of action in all phases and we all saw that watching Dennis last season, which factored into us drafting Trotter in the first place.

You see how people react to things they don’t put any effort into trying to understand?

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    I predict Sonny Styles.

  38. ModHairKen Says:

Sure he does. Ditto Bain and Scott. And about 100 other rookie Defenders.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Trotter is our future MLB no question, but folks are possibly being premature to think that Bowles will just gift him the MLB starter’s role. Todd’s been burned TWICE in the last 2 years IMO by going with KJ Britt then Dennis. MLB is a critical position in this defense, and both turned out to be weak links. Bucs didn’t bring on TWO free agent ILBs on accident. BOTH have a lot of starting experience.

Todd Bowles thrives on starting each season on a positive note. It seems like he’s prone to bringing defensive rookies along relatively slowly. Diaby for instance was only a part-time sub until Game 11 of his rookie year, THEN he became a full-time player. Others have fared similarly. He MAY end up doing the same with Trotter. And Bain also.

  40. Gipper Says:

SirVocea Dennis is headed to special teams —-maybe. He is a lousy tackler and fails to break down when confronting a ball carrier. Many NFL players are poor tacklers but Dennis is really bad. Might be time to ship him out for a player to be named later.

  41. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Todd Bowles thrives on starting each season on a positive note. It seems like he’s prone to bringing defensive rookies along relatively slowly.”

Too general of a statement to be true, as Jacob Parrish & Tykee Smith were both Wk1 starters. Also took his best CB off the field to get a 2nd round pick in Morrison to get reps last year.

We lost Lavonte, he wore the hat we signed Anzalone to wear in coverage while also being our stack LBer which is likely the role Trotter will be used in as well as wearing the green dot.

The stack LBer is the guys who shades either DT and is the force in play when it comes to fitting the run, i.e. the downhill presence from the 2nd level(5th/6th man in the box). That’s literally Trotters’ strength. Whether it’s tracking gap play, or shedding IOLmen sent to the 2nd level to get a hat on him after chipping a IDL.

Yes, he’ll compete, but he’ll get more than enough opportunities to win the job with the competition being Rozeboom and SVD. It’s not some insurmountable task.

  42. infomeplease Says:

    Seeing is believing!

  43. buc4evr Says:

Remember when SVD was going to be the best LB in the league? Think there is way too much hype for Bain, Trotter and Scott now.

I am just hoping these rookies can get through training camp and preseason without blowing a knee out.

  44. #1bucsfan Says:

I mean there’s always a chance but highly unlikely. He should be able to make an impact in the run game and have a few sacks. Man trotter is a blitzer , Scott is a blitzer , Bain , yaya , kancey, AQM , vea and Robinson some has to put the QB on their ass and I think we are going to see a lot of it. Exciting stuff

  45. Jack Says:

Best thing about this kid – he’s 21!

Looking forward to seeing him play and develop into a solid LB for years to come.

Going to be very interesting to see how our ILB room comes together after camp.

  46. catcard202 Says:

I look at this draft like Jason Licht’s 2019 effort…Where the FO / Scouting department targeted the right kind of players the roster needed – finding value in each of the 1st 4 rounds…(D.White / SMB / Dean / Edwards / Nelson all had a hand in helping Bucs DEF along the way to the 2020 SB!)

Now, I am not saying this years draftees will have the effect that springboards the Bucs to the promised land by the 2027 season….But it is not out of the questions that this group – along with a solid FA haul could very well show an immediate 2-3 game improvement of 2026 W/L record.

  47. LynchMob50 Says:

This is like that guy that talks himself up before a tee time, then slices his first drive into the opposing fairway. Only to re-tee without taking a penalty and claiming to get a par.

Talk is cheap and we’ve seen nothing from this guy yet to point to him being a ROTY candidate.

very lazy article that was clearly chum for the Pom Pom club.

  52. Not a good look Says:

Trotter doesn’t have to beat out an aging Anzalone to start, play or win DROY.

He’s also a different type of backer than Alex is. There’s 2 ILB positions in a 3-4. He just has to beat out who’s playing next to Anzalone for that to happen.

And please by all means, cancel each other out for DROY because all 3 of y’all are playing strong ball. I might actually pray for that.

Vollyball IS at least a sport….it’s a pretty good one too. Lots of athletic stuff going on, teamwork, etc

How much money do you have on Trotters odds for DROY? Zero? That’s what I thought. Pure hopium and speculation. Solak’s somewhat learned opinion and evaluation is barely above or equal to squat. See, I understand perfectly.

Clearly, your opinions are weak if you chose to evaluate golf, volleyball and table tennis as non-sports. Obviously, you never had the talent to play any of them. Lay back down in your coffin with your stogie and whisky.

  58. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“How much money do you have on Trotters odds for DROY? Zero? That’s what I thought.”

First of all, this is moronic, because gambling addicts form their opinions based on the wagers they place.

‘Clearly, your opinions are weak if you chose to evaluate golf, volleyball and table tennis as non-sports.’

Clearly a child left behind, because if you can read AND comprehend the exchange the only sport that was put down as a non-sport was golf.

Football is as data driven as any other sport out there, there’s literally countless people on the same internet you and I are using to interact rn-talking about the projected success of damn near any player that just got drafted into the NFL 2 weeks ago?

It’s called a projection sir, and just because someone is projecting one of the guys we drafted might be good enough to compete for one of the highest honors any first year player can earn-you and other come in with the “well what about the other rookies” idk if that’s adhd or some of you are so miserable you don’t like hearing football talk on a site dedicated to following ONE football team.

Nobody mentioned “other rookies” because the article was about Josiah Trotter, OUR effing rookie. Stay sharp, stay classy.

    ———

Is Solak aware the Bucs run a 3-4 and use two ILBs?

That’s an odd comment from him.

Anywho, while I didn’t like the pick of Trotter on draft night, I said before the draft that I think he’s going to be a good NFL LB – but I don’t think Bowles scheme fits him at all. But Trotter does look like a traditional 4-3 run stuffing MLB. I do very much worry about him in coverage, which is what everyone complained about with White, Britt and Dennis in this same role.

He is NOT KJ Britt, he is not too slow for the NFL by any means, but I just don’t know if he has the speed and quickness required to be a good coverage LB (most LB’s are not). But there is a simple solution, however… don’t use him that way if he’s not good at it. Just throwing that out there.

  66. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“How much money do you have on Trotters odds for DROY? Zero? That’s what I thought.“

Terrible usage of a rhetorical question. Off the assumption that I tie what I know of football or players to, sports betting?

“Clearly, your opinions are weak if you chose to evaluate golf, volleyball and table tennis as non-sports.“

Your reading comprehension isn’t all that high if this is your interpretation of that exchange, especially considering the only thing I called a non-sport was the sport that you can bang shots and puff cigars while playing it.

I mean sure, you can try to play football loaded on brown liquor, but it’ll get ugly for you at some point.

  67. mj Says:

who comes up with this garbage?

  68. toopanca Says:

I have been, and remain, critical of the Trotter selection given that Hill was on the board.

Pewter Report wrote an apology for the piece quoting his 2025 defensive coordinator who said that, after a brutal start at a new school running a Ned defense, that Trotter improved tremendously in coverage as the season progressed.

PR reported that, in the first 7 weeks, Trotter’s passer rating allowed was 132.2 while he allowed 1.42 yards per coverage route, one TD, and 14 completions on 15 targets.

In the second half of the season, Trotter’s passer rating allowed was 88.9 while he allowed 0.71 yards per coverage route, 0 TDS, and 14 completions on 18 targets. This breakdown does not indicate how he performed against specific competition, but he did play against ranked competition in both halves of the season.

Trotter still did not produce the interceptions and forced fumbles that Hill produced, and Trotter lacks Hill’s sideline to sideline speed and playmaking ability. But, in replies in the comment section, PR said that the Bucs believed Hill lacks the instincts and toughness they require – a comment which I find baffling.

Hill did miss a few games with a boxer’s fracture in his hand which, along with his 3 FF in 2025, is a testament to his efforts to punch the ball out and force turnovers. But, Trotter missed much of a previous season with a knee injury, and he performed no timed testing at the combine or his pro day because he had a knee procedure performed at the end of the 2025 season.

So, while I still question the pick, coverage may not be the terrible deficiency it appeared to be.

  69. Fanofdabucs Says:

Another article that shows just how little this outside media types know. Trotter has to beat out Roseboom and SVD. Anzalone will play LVD position and Trotter is more suited as a true Mike.

That being said, the DROY usually goes to an edge (sacks) or a CB (INTs).

Lots of good defensive rookies drafted this year. Bailey, Bain, Reese, Downs, Styles..just to name a few. Tampa wont get many primetime games and that will also hurt his chances.

  70. Kenton Smith Says:

Reality. Trotter. Great kid. OK. Chances of being a great pro. Never interrupt NFL history have I seen a great pro with 3 knee surgeries before draft and become a great pro. Penix had 2 knee surgeries in college and I laughed at Atlanta for risking the pick. Oops. He’s in rehab, Tua is on the roster. Until one of our new defenders rattles his brain.
