DeMeco Ryans Says Logan Hall Can Win On The Edge
March 31st, 2026It’s fascinates Joe that the NFL’s nastiest defense was fired up to sign Logan Hall, who departed Tampa Bay this month after he was the Bucs’ first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
That defense belongs to Houston, so Joe asked Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans about Hall today.
Ryans is excited about Hall’s versatility, he told Joe at the AFC Coaches breakfast in Phoenix.
The Bucs rarely used Hall as an edge rusher, despite great struggles at the position. Ryans sees potential in Hall on the edge.
“From Logan, starting out for us seeing him playing as an interior guy, playing that 3-technique (defensive tackle) position. Long, physical guy, has enough wiggle I think to get more in the pass rush; he can get on the edge, he can win,” Ryans said. “He can get into our scheme playing how we play; attacking the line of scrimmage is really going to help him, really going to streamline his game and really enhance the traits that he has. He’s a tough, long, physical guy.”
Ryans went on to say he really wants Hall to focus on that 3-technique position to learn the Houston defense from only one position and grow from there.
Joe’s jury is out on Hall. He was ok. Did the Bucs maximize all his skills? That’s unclear.
As Joe wrote previously, when Hall arrived in Houston, he sounded like a guy who thought he could have done more to help the Bucs. “In Tampa, I think you know [I] was kind of stand and bang, fight the good fight,” Hall said. “I think here I’d have more of an opportunity to pin my ears back and go, which is outstanding.”

Bowles never played to his strenghts. Put a square peg, in a round hole. When it didn’t work had to be the player, Todd’s a genuis, defensive guru. Let Hall go, draft another peg, hope it fits better. Robert’s turn now, let’s see if he can do better playing out of position.

Yes I think Hall was not used properly and I think you will see that come out in Houston.

How often was Hall double-teamed? Bet was lot less than Vita Vea. There were no instructions not to sack the QB.

Hall was soft. Not physical. Good athlete. Had a solid 2024 and expected him to build on that in 2025. Didn’t happen.

A’Shawn seems like an obvious upgrade to me.

The dude was slightly in the top half of defensive lineman last year according to PFF. Does anybody know what position he played in college? I’m wondering if this is one of those deals like we drafted offensive tackle with an idea of converting him to guard and it didn’t work out

Imagine if this guy explodes with 10+ sacks in a reserve role with Anderson and Hunter as the starters.
Apathy

Logan Hall should never have been drafted in the first place
He’s not a 2 gapper, he’s either a 3Tech, or a stand up DE
I been saying this for years
The interesting part is Licht traded from the 27th pick
To get more picks, he knew Suh was long gone
So why not draft Georgia DT Devonte Wyatt to replace Suh
Wyatt is a natural at filling gaps, and rushing the passer
Green Bay drafted Wyatt with the 28th pick of the draft

I’m very interested in seeing how Hall’s development goes from here. He does have a frame that can be leaned out, plays a little too high but he is someone who can cause some disruption with his length and height if developed.

If Logan succeeds as a pass rusher in Texas sends a huge message to the Bucs coaches, especially Todd Bowles. He needs to succeed in 2026 or be sent packing elsewhere.

…could have done more to help the Bucs…
could’ve sacked Tyler Shough when he had 2 arms on him.

I’m going to say this, the NFL is a business and I don’t think Hall is really about that. He’s lucky Chucky wasn’t his headcoach I’ll tell him that to. I think a few players have abused the team with that kind of thinking the last few years. Tampa isn’t the daycare nor a retirement home.

Dude makes the pro bowl playing for Demeco. If Demeco had been the Bucs head coach last year, 12-5 minimum.

Hall put on 25 or 30 pounds so he could play out of his normal position. He’s a 4/3 DE. Not suited for 3/4. Should not have been drafted as a project with the 1st pick. Crazy.

Hall won’t be playing the same position in Houston and won’t be asked to do the same thing.
In Todd’s defense, and in most 3-4 defenses, a DE is more of a space eater, meant to free up other guys to make plays. That’s what Hall was asked to do. It would be like saying a TE in an offense where they mostly block puts up better numbers in an offense where the TE is used mostly as a receiver. Well, duh.
