Is Mike Evans The New Baker Mayfield Chip?
March 10th, 2026
“Really, Mike? You wanna bet McCaffrey gets hurt again and the Niners are right back to last place where they were in 2024?”
If you ask Baker Mayfield’s good college buddy Sterling Shepard, the former Bucs receiver, Mayfield has always made up reasons to put a big chip on his shoulder.
Bucs fans have seen Mayfield in action.
For example, Mayfield was bitter at the Jets in September because Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was interim head coach of the Panthers when Carolina was gutting its roster to tank for the 2023 NFL Draft. It was goofy. What interim head coach calls the shots?
Wilks even fired back to say Mayfield was reaching for nonsense.
But this is what Mayfield does. He fishes in all corners of life for motivation. So Joe is wondering today if Mayfield is a little ornery that Mike Evans bolted the Bucs for the San Francisco 49ers.
That would be so Mayfield. Joe could have fun speculating what Mayfield may text his buddies on the offense after the shock of Evans’ departure wanes a little.
Keep in mind Mayfield went public with confidence saying Evans would return to the Bucs.
Heck, Mayfield might even be a little pissed off at Evans for believing more in Brock Purdy.

March 10th, 2026 at 12:21 pm
Time will tell, I would be interested in the future what the players have to say. I know Evans hanging around McCoy who hates Mayfield sends a bad message to Mayfield.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:22 pm
I’ve been watching football and rooting for 55 or so years (that I can remember). Players come and go. Hall of Fame players, solid players, journeymen. In the moment, it seems like your team will never be the same without Joe Namath, Lawrence Taylor, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Derrick Brooks. But the years and the games and the teams roll on. As fans, all we can do is roll on — and b1tch and moan.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:22 pm
Bucs O line was one of the worst in the league by the end of the year. The offense can’t operate like that. Jason Licht needs to get it together and figure out how to fix this team.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:26 pm
Seriously Joseph??
Is this article serious??
March 10th, 2026 at 12:27 pm
Evans believes a little more in the whole 49’s organization. Also 3rd and 28.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:28 pm
Losing M1K3 changed so much. Ain’t nobody scared of this Offense and we filled our holes apart from Oline depth. Glaring softness at TE still there. No true #1 WR. No Mike
March 10th, 2026 at 12:30 pm
And a garbage defense. Its a Bucs life. Aint going to be an Edge.
Highlight of off-season is Cade Otton
What in the actual f@@@
March 10th, 2026 at 12:31 pm
McCoy is a human scum- if Evans hangs w him, good riddance.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:32 pm
Drafting all defense wont fix this mess. We are not the same team.
Just the Tampa Bay Todd Bowles avg talentneers
March 10th, 2026 at 12:33 pm
Given the opportunity, Mike would likely edit his agent’s statement to avoid totally throwing his teammate under the bus along with the front office.
But effectively, Mike indeed has motivated his old QB to prove that he’s better than Purdy.
Thanks Mike for lighting a nice fire under Mayfield’s butt!
March 10th, 2026 at 12:35 pm
why cant your write regarding our incompetent head coach and how we should prepare for the draft instead of this waste of time?
March 10th, 2026 at 12:36 pm
This might be Baker last year in Tampa, if he don’t improve
He should see his (Chip) every morning when he look in the mirror
March 10th, 2026 at 12:38 pm
where is the Pass Rush HELP!!!???
March 10th, 2026 at 12:39 pm
Zzbucs. Darn right it’s serious. If Mayfield is leading the Bucs, and he is healthy, and the 49ers are on the schedule (playoffs would be dandy), I’m going straight to the bank and running right up to Kansas, where I’ll put the total withdrawal on the Bucs. Baker will be ramped up to the nth degree. Baker ain’t an elephant but he dang sure has a memory like one. He’s not forgetting this one. Quite the contrary. Again, you better be hitting the prep really hard, Mike. And you better be getting ready today. Because I can promise you that Mayfield is.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:39 pm
@Zzbucs…
You DON’T think Mayfield will have a chip on his shoulder with Mike bolting? Or, you DON’T think Mayfield will create a chip to make himself work harder because that’s how some people are wired?
If not, pray, do tell, why not?
March 10th, 2026 at 12:40 pm
Evans traded Blows & Robinson for Shanahan. That’s a real upgrade, Baker to Brock is a push.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:42 pm
The chip on the shoulder thing is getting tiring at this point honestly, I still get the infatuation and overhype on baker. To think baker can take us to a Super Bowl or be a 31 or 32 year old franchise qb is delusion at this point. Licht needs to learn how to scout and evaluate QBs or he needs to go, his complacency and laziness is ridiculous.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:43 pm
This team is devoid of elite talent. JL needs to bring in a star now that mike is gone. No respect by other teams now
March 10th, 2026 at 12:45 pm
A chip cuz Mike left? Lol no I don’t think Baker uses this as a chip I don’t think it is so Baker to do so either lmao good laugh though.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:49 pm
If Baker has a chip on his shoulder, so what? What’s that going to do? It certainly won’t help him play better. No one was scared of Baker with Mike and now without him his completion percentage will plummet.
Baker is going to be the same QB we saw the last 9 games of last season. My question is what excuses will the Baker worshippers come up with next?
March 10th, 2026 at 12:53 pm
Wondered when this article was coming, it’s asking how does Mayfield feel about it. I’m really wondering how Ariens and everyone else said that the odds of ME leaving were small are feeling today. This tells me and the Bucs that they should just shut up and play football the best they can to win. Same for Ariens, I notice Licht has been quiet this year about the Bucs talent since last year. Talk is cheap, show me the rings, or the attempt at getting more.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:55 pm
That chip isn’t clutch enough to be anything but fun to watch.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:55 pm
Mike is a hall of famer? Not yet he’s not. In Evans 11 years in the game he’s averaged a little over 8 TDS per season. His first 2 years with Baker he caught 24 TDS. When he wasn’t dropping balls in the end zone and running to the sideline for a breather. Somebody else needs to kiss his a$$, because I sure won’t.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:55 pm
2 Reasons Evans Left:
1. He doesn’t believe is Bowles.
2. He doesn’t trust Baker.
Evans lived with a charasmatic QB that turned the ball over in crunchtime for 5 hard years. Baker is Winston 2.0. Evans won’t suffer fools.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:55 pm
I’m a getting the feeling that the Bucs ah’noose feels about the size of a wizards sleeve right now….
March 10th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
Could have franchised tag Mike if they REALLY wanted him to stay. I’m betting his agent told JL he had last word before Mike goes anywhere in exchange for no tag.
As I have been saying it’s win win. Now go get a pass rusher and AJ Brown. Even giving up a first and CG to Philadelphia will be better than any one JL drafts.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
Wonder what number Mike gets. Brock already has the 13
March 10th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
Purdy has better career numbers vs Mayfield and head to head, Purdy has 5 TD’s and 0 interceptions vs Bucs.
Shanahan will use Evans in red zone and McCaffrey and Kittle are studs
Can’t blame Evans , SF is a fun place if you have money.
Mayfield still has good targets if he has protection.
March 10th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
Whatever it takes.
You know…a part of me feels like this team is going to surprise a lot of people, including the fans.
The truth is, we had a pretty good team last year before the injuries. Now we’ve lost some players…but we replaced a few too, and we still have not reached the draft.
There’s a flicker of anticipation building within me.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:02 pm
Baker made Evans look alot better than he is these last 3 years SlyPirate. He wants to be the king of the hill but he’s not as good as the majority of #1 receivers in this league anymore. And wasn’t willing to put in the work to get there. Man I’m glad he’s gone.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:04 pm
If Baker was a Super Bowl QB, Evans would still be here. Maybe Baker should have a “chip” against himself.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:05 pm
Whatever it takes to get motivated.
I’m not upset at Mike Evans, but it is a fact that he could have stayed and chose to leave. That’s an indictment of the owners, the GM and the HC.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:07 pm
Let’s Mike left for the same reason us fans were so disgusted last season. Our team quit trying. It was disgusting and disgraceful. I wouldn’t want to spend the last couple years of my career on a team like that. Lavonte doesn’t want his last season to be like that either. I’m sure he’s deciding if it will be better this season.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:08 pm
@Kenton Smith I disagree. Evans made Baker look a lot better than he is. See also: 1. Baker’s career record in games Mike Evans doesn’t play, 2. The Bucs record in recent years when Mike Evans doesn’t play, 3. Manziel, Johnny…Heisman Trophy Winner.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:10 pm
Without a doubt the main reason for Evan’s bolting is Todd defense (3-28). The second might be Bakers selfish plays. His way of playing does not guarantee a solid play from Baker in the playoffs.
If Baker makes it a priority to slide at the end of his runs, I would be the first to say extend his contract. Evans is running out of time to be with a QB like Baker. It was a smart move by Evans. Because you know Evans wants to retire with at least one TD in the Super Bowl. That’s a no brainer
March 10th, 2026 at 1:11 pm
This silly notion would have to assume that Mike Evans didn’t take to any of his teammates after he signed with the 49ers. Bucs offered more money so 80% of this decision was about Bowles 10% was about lack of targets and 10% about having a scout pretending to be a general manager
March 10th, 2026 at 1:13 pm
Evans left because Baker is a bum who single handedly cost the Bucs the playoffs.
Last 6 games:
Bucs, 10th in points allowed
Bucs, 28th in points scored
The defense did it’s job.
The sole person, the on individual, who didn’t do his job, was Bum Baker, who cost the Bucs the playoffs with his awful play when it mattered most.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:14 pm
I think it’s more along the lines of “Hey Mike, I’m going to be a free agent next year! Can yo talk me up over there please?”
March 10th, 2026 at 1:15 pm
I dont think it had anything to do with the QB in general and more to do with the 49ers roster and head coach. Evans knows this defense is reeling and Bowles is not the answer. I don’t think Purdy is better than Mayfield at the end of the day to be honest. We have seen what Baker looks like when he is on his game and has a good offensive coordinator.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:18 pm
I think the Bucs should’ve gotten rid of Bowles.
But that said, it blows my mind that the de-facto defensive coordinator is getting all the blame for a receiver leaving but somehow the quarterback is getting almost none.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:18 pm
Evans didn’t leave for Brock Purdy, he left because we have a trash defense who can’t stop a team on 3’rd and 28 when you really need a stop. He left because he believes the 9’ers have a shot at a Super Bowl and he believes the Bucs don’t have any shot at all. So time will tell if Evans is right. However, we dont have to wait on the defense, we all know it’s garbage we saw it with our own eyes all season.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:24 pm
The only thing Mike did with this move is tell the world the Bucs are not contenders. The team can survive without him. As it stands, Canales will be the former OC ending Bowles HC career next season, as much as everyone wants to talk about Coen. I don’t see this team making any waves unless JL makes some moves in the next 48 hours, or there is a big trade to shore up the DE, LB and CB positions. The clock is ticking!
March 10th, 2026 at 1:26 pm
All these dummies continuing to whine about the defense, ignore the fact that in the playoff run, the defense did its job.
The offense did not – and by that, I mean Bum Baker didn’t do his job, he single handedly tanked the season.
If it’s not about Baker, where’s all the big name FA’s busting down the doors of One Buc Place begging to play with him? Where is Baker out recruiting guys to come to Tampa?
Anyone that thinks this isn’t about Baker is clueless.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:27 pm
I predict Baker will not be signing an extension because he will not choose to do so even if offered one. He will be playing for free agency in 2027. He will sit himself if banged up. He will stop the heroics and save his body.
The defense laid down last year and will likely not play well next year. AW Jr will have no motivation at all. He’s 28 with 3 years left on this contract. He’s trapped and may beg for a trade behind the scenes. VV may be coasting for his last 2 years before retirement. If Zyon was bored last year…….
History will repeat itself. Robinson will become the next Dirk Koetter in 2027. There will be a parade of has been QB’s looking for money. No real talent will want to play here.
We’ve seen this movie before and will see it again.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:28 pm
First 5 years of Evans career he barely averaged 7 TDS a year. The past 6 years, 3 with Brady and 3 with Mayfield, he averaged 10. As far as making Baker look better, Mayfield set an NFL record for touchdowns for rookies with a team that had won one of their previous 36 games. Came in in the third game down 2 touchdowns and went 7-6-1 after the Browns opened 0-2. Was on pace for 4500 yards and 40 touchdowns if he’d have had the full 16 games. And imagine, Cleveland fired their head coach after that season. To hire Freddie Kitchens. Who Bellidunce hired and fired as his OC at NC last year. Folks wondered why his 2nd year wasn’t as good. By his 3rd year he was winning playoff games. 4th year tore his labrum 3rd game and Stefanski wouldn’t bench him because he knew Baker was his only chance, even though he required surgery. Somehow Baker still won almost half his games that year but the brilliant Stefanski decided to pay a quarter billion dollars to a true chump while Baker was in the hospital recovering from surgery. Mike was not around making Baker look better than, was he Mike S? Baker running away as the Heismann winner and first pick of the draft? Thank goodness Mike Evans was there making Baker look good, right Mike S? Has anybody ever told you you might not know your butt from a hole in the ground Mike S? Well now you have. And it’s past time too.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:33 pm
I’m disappointed ME is gone, but I’m not wishing him well. He’s not a Buc. He plays for an NFC rival. Rooting for SF to miss the playoffs the next three years and finish at the bottom of their division.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:34 pm
I don’t see him holding it against Mike. He respects his teammates too much to be mad at Mike. Probably everyone on the offense has seen what a crap coach Bowles is.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:34 pm
Ya’ll are about to find out just how little opposing defenses actually fear Godwin, Otton, Ebuka and McMillan once Mike isn’t on the field…
March 10th, 2026 at 1:34 pm
I would be greatly surprised and disappointed in both #6 and#13 if they had or shared negative thoughts and opinions about each other, but the media and Baker haters will put him throw him under the bus for #13 fleeing to the niners! My hope, they both have career seasons and Baker doesn’t not resign with the Bucs but moves on to greener pastures with better owners!
March 10th, 2026 at 1:36 pm
Hey Rod. Brady knew what he had with Big Mike. He threw tds to buddies Gronk and Brown in the Super Bowl. At least Mike had 1! catch in the biggest game of his career. Rod, now you know what a true choker looks like. Mike did have 4 costly turnovers in his most important game in that Super Bowl. He almost singlehanded blew that game. The more I think about it the more I think Baker had a vote with what to do about Mike. If he did he made a heck of a great choice. Butterfinger overrated chump.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:42 pm
If the Bucs get Hendrickson it will just be his swan song for one last 1 year contract before a Florida retirement. Bowles won’t unleash him and he will be another Reddick.
The future of this team doesn’t require shades.

@Kenton Smith: Don’t know my butt from a hole in the ground? Well, I know that Evans is probably a first ballot Hall of Famer, and I know that the only person writing Baker’s name on a Hall of Fame ballot is probably you.
No need to make it personal just because someone disagrees with your questionable take, Kenton. Hurling personal insults through a screen is bad form.
March 10th, 2026 at 1:52 pm
Is this a chip for Bake? I dunno. I don’t think so. These dudes hit dive bars together. Or did one time. Who knows what to believe?
My guess is they talk enough to agree that the D is an issue. EVERY astute Bucs fan has known the Bowles D has been questionable at best for a couple yrs. Why else would he only bring in assistants to take over leadership roles? He doesn’t want challenges to his scheme! Mike and Bake and Chris and Thistan and Lavonte all know this. These dudes are smart.
Bake is tied to this franchise. He can’t leave for a Superbowl franchise … because Superbowl franchises don’t need him, they already have their guy. Chris almost left last yr…why? Because he knew. The guys we attract are older and appreciate a respectful staff that doesn’t make them practice in Spring. Anzalone isn’t going to be humping it around the practice field every day.
Maybe Bowles creates a miracle scheme. Maybe he miraculously develops a edge rush. Maybe his CBs don’t get carved up. As Joe has said…hope is a sad word. And Mike voted against hope. Chris almost voted against hope last yr. Baker IS the hope. A no name O Coordinator is hope. And no offense to the new guy…but he’s no name.
Mike Evans just bet against the Bucs. I’ll take the under on 2026 win totals. This isn’t a playoff team. It wasn’t WITH Mike and it sure as sh*t isn’t without him. If the experts (players) are betting against the team (ie Evans) then bettors probably should too. The Hard Rock is out of their mind.

It’s fine Mike was injured most of last season he has been injured before does it suck for nostalgia absolutely but Mike is gonna be 33 he isn’t what he was still good but no one should be running their offense through a 33 year old wr.
March 10th, 2026 at 2:02 pm
For a brief period the Bucs were relevant. Just wait until the new Rays ballpark gets built. I see the same scenario for the Bucs, new owners and a new stadium in a few years if the economy allows for it. Many Bucs fans will be so disillusioned they will move down the street to the air-conditioned comfort and the new model for baseball parks. They will spend their money where they get value for it. They may still be “Bucs fans” but they will watch it on TV not from the seats.
March 10th, 2026 at 2:04 pm
Evans will probably start the season on IR or shortly into the season, then people can say I told you so.
He will then come in and have some sporadic outings where he has 100 yds and a TD, then all will say I told you so.
Then he will end up playing 9 games and SF Fans will be saying only if Evans didn’t get hurt.
March 10th, 2026 at 2:21 pm
LMAOOOOOOOOO
Usually suspects in here doing the same dance to the same played out song.
Might didn’t leave because of Baker, but he damn sure didn’t stay because of him either for as talked about as their relationship was obviously it wasn’t strong than what Mike wanted for himself
Funny tho, all this talk about chips
With no chips to show for it, no rings, not many accolades and definetly no trophies, just hurt feelings and slights.
Baker should’ve been less worried about Stefanski thinking he’s trash, and should’ve been selling Mike on staying.

Mayfield makes the toilet bowl.
Purdy was picked dead last.
Mayfield was picked first overall.
Purdy is a winner.
Mayfield is a loser.

You forgot to mention that Baker makes the Pro Bowl. Multiple times.
Are you really a Bucs fan?
March 10th, 2026 at 2:50 pm
Bet! All 4 of these guys have better hands than Mike, @ least 2 of them are faster. Mike IS NOT all that anymore and NOT having him demanding a large percentage of targets for his stats/legacy potentially makes our offense (specifically the pass game) better without him.
It’s time for a changing of the guard WR-wise
With all due respect to Mike, I’m more concerned with losing RW and Dean.
March 10th, 2026 at 2:57 pm
honestly i believe the bucs believed mike would be cool and trusting after all these years with the same deal lavonte’s getting…
year to year contracts…
do i think we offered him 1 year 20 mil…?
for sure…
that’s really what i think…
they prolly said “we got you mike, as long as you want to play”
mike wanted security and bounce to a new environment…
in fact, he might have simply wanted a new environment…wink wink…
main thing is he stays clinched, and never drops the bar of zest or it could get zesty ! 🙂

“Bet! All 4 of these guys have better hands than Mike, @ least 2 of them are faster. Mike IS NOT all that anymore and NOT having him demanding a large percentage of targets for his stats/legacy potentially makes our offense (specifically the pass game) better without him.“
This is cool in theory Tom, but defenses showed us last year how important Mike was and all 4 of those guys can also be taken away with double teams now that the main draw is out of the building. Don’t think Mike felt selfishly entitled to being the main targeted WR, he’s been with Chris for years and those two have been coming back n forth as primary targets since about ‘18. I think Mike wants to be in a system he knows he can thrive in, and possibly landed with a team with a who’s backup and starter finished completing close to 70% of their passes.
Defesne are going to have a choice in who they can take away as targets, as opposed to having to worry about containing Evans. All that while we currently don’t have a consistent deep threat on the roster. Maybe JMac, but he doesn’t have Mikes length, catch radius, or reputation and for as good as Egbuka is as a player I’d bracket him without worry about him beating me at the top of the route tree, not because Egbuka can’t win but I also doubt our QBs ability to make that a consistent part of his game.
So we’ll see what’s to come, I’m almost tempted to think WR can 100% be on the menu day 1 of the draft, and if a guy like Denzel Boston can’t be had we trade out of or back into the first to potentially catch Chris Brazzell II, we have no lid openers on this roster.
March 10th, 2026 at 3:38 pm
Good for Evan’s, we have a good WR room which can only get better. Yeah right Evan’s Buc for life, he should have told the fans he was out. A lot of fans were counting on him to come back. He wants yards, he wants money and he wants a ring. Go bro peace out
March 10th, 2026 at 3:42 pm
Baker’s chip will be playing quarterback without running backs.
