Baker Mayfield Says He Wants Offense To Stop Looking Ahead

February 9th, 2026

It sounds like the Buccaneers’ franchise quarterback thinks his offense got a little too full of itself.

Baker Mayfield was a guest last week on Black & Abdalla, a Westwood One radio show.

Mayfield was asked what he wants to improve in himself and the team. He talked about staying healthy but noted the Bucs offense collectively needs to have more of a lunchpail approach.

“For me, I would love to stay healthier all year,” Mayfield said. “I had to make a lot of plays with my feet this year. When the time calls, you got to do what you have to do. But for me, just being able to continue to get the ball out quickly, find it and get it in the playmakers’ hands — because we do have an unbelievable group.

“And the thing that I’m looking forward to improve for the whole unit, I think when you have a group that’s as good [as the Bucs’] and you look at it on paper that’s as good as the [Bucs] are, I think you set the expectations and start to look ahead a little bit. Making sure we’re wherever our feet are at whatever that is, whatever day of the week it is, just take it one day at a time.”

It seems the Bucs offense might have done too much looking around at its own stars at points in the season. Or perhaps Mayfield was saying the work ethic needs to be more on point, or that the offense got a little distracted by outside noise. Or maybe the Bucs got too caught up in thinking about players that would return eventually from injury.

Every great team just focuses on winning each day at a time, whether that’s a Wednesday or a Sunday. Joe’s glad to hear Mayfield say the Bucs need a little more focus on that mentality.

We appreciate the articles certainly, but I think that’s reaching to read between the lines. Simple interview. Standard QB speech. When it comes down to it, it’s going to be the health of the team, yes, as well as the new offensive scheme which will be a helpful improvement. Not counting the defense, which is currently a bit of a disaster and needs help all around.

    * hopeful improvement

Hasn’t this excuse already been used and used and used every year since Bowles took over as HC?

  4. HC Grover Says:

Sorry about that. But he is doing the best he can. Battle for the bottom of NFC South. GO BAKE!

  5. HC Grover Says:

    Nice try JBF

The best thing going for the Bucs is they play in the NFC South

That’s a huge win for them before the season starts
As far as Baker Mayfield, he’s the best QB in the division
It’s not the same division with 3 MVP Super Bowl QBs,
Our lost decade was lost mostly because of those 3 Super Bowl teams

The Bucs will win the division again this season
Atlanta, New Orleans, Carolina have just as many issues as us

And for your day after the SB hangover Joe we have the 1rst mock draft of the year with, you guessed it, Sonny Styles coming to Tampa with the 15th pick…….

Talking about a mock this early could lead to a ban on this corner, LOL

I just hope someone asks Zac Robinson at a presser if he has a plan to deal with the heat of training camp, it would suck if he weren’t prepared and it catches him by surprise.

  9. Beeej Says:

The NFC South is better than the NFC East or the AFC North

I’d consider trading down getting more picks & help build the team as much as possible. This would be the perfect time to now. Picking right in the middle of the 1st round. Trade down some.

Maybe less commercials mid season. As soon as every commercial was Baker baking the offense stopped cooking. That can’t happen when there is no defense and there was no defense.

  12. Lakeland Says:

The NFC South basically has four .500 teams in the division
I don’t see any dominant team in the division

That’s why I’m so optimistic about our chances

  13. Lakeland Says:

Baker was crowned MVP after 6 games
Todd Bowles was Coach of the year
Emeka Egbuka was offensive rookie of the year

I think the hype went to their heads

I think that the NFC South, other than Tampa Bay, trended up in ’25. I also think that we’ll no longer considered to be the toilet division at the end of the ’26 season.

Your ignorance and inhumanity is sadly showing through your pen name Grover. Do wear a pillow case or a red hat, probably both.
