Jay Glazer: Todd Bowles Retention Situation “Made No Sense To Me”

February 5th, 2026

So Jay Glazer of FOX Sports is on the list of NFL super insiders with contacts spanning from players to owners to executives that like to suck up to him.

Glazer gets answers before they become public knowledge — and he certainly gets answers after the fact.

So it intrigued Joe to hear Glazer confused while on Radio Row yesterday talking to WDAE radio. He was asked about the great turnover in the NFL head coaching ranks last month and about the retention of Todd Bowles in Tampa.

The latter flummoxed Glazer.

“It made no sense to me — to keep him but make him fire everybody on the staff,” Glazer said of the Bucs and Bowles. “That made no sense. Like, that has zero sense. Right? Yeah, I just didn’t get that one.”

Glazer was asked if money was a factor in Team Glazer (no relation) granting Bowles a fifth Bucs season.

No, Glazer replied firmly. “They just love him. … … They love him. They love him. They absolutely love him.”

Joe is always intrigued by big Team Glazer decisions, such as calls on the head coach. The Bucs owners always have a united front, but they are six siblings. There’s no way they could always agree. What siblings do?

  1. ocala Says:

It did not to 90% of Bucs fans either. Bucs have arguably the worst head coach in the NFL. Wasted year(s).

  2. Hodad Says:

They love him, absolutely love him. Glad somebody does. Hope they love their box office receipts.

  3. Bucsfan Says:

There is absolutely another reason, and we wish we could see it. BTW, it’s not too late. Fire Bowles

  4. Bojim Says:

Yea. Firing the staff. It was like “It was their fault!!!”

  5. BucsFan81 Says:

It made no sense to any of us fans either. Just the Glazers I guess they just want to waste a year and get some draft picks.

  6. Boge Says:

I don’t hope for Bucs to lose, but after reading this I hope the stadium is empty.

  7. crasey Says:

Translation: We couldn’t get anybody we liked better…

  8. Tye Says:

‘That made no sense. Like, that has zero sense. Right? ‘

You RIGHT!… NO common sense anywhere in that decision…
When people do stupid things it often baffles the wise…
IBS was WAY MORE deserving to be fired compared to several that were!

  9. Popmike66 Says:

The problem I see with J Glazer here is, he doesn’t own a billion dollar franchise and he may be the first to get answers about questions on most of the NFL franchises but he can’t answer the Bucs and Bowles question. The Glazers have been pretty successful at their business with 2 Super Bowls in Tampa and a championship with their( I think it a soccer team) there also

  10. FireBowlesnow Says:

Bucs fans are soooooooo excited to see another year with Bowles. Almost as excited as we were in the offseason to see a 5th Winston year lol

  11. gotbbucs Says:

I, like a couple other commentators, think this is all about taking a big swing at Mike Tomlin next year. Wouldnt surprise me if Bowles is in on the decision and will step down and retire after the 2026 season.

If thats the case, then it would make sense that the Glazers wouldn’t want to fire Bowles, hire another head coach and staff to 4 year deals, only to fire them all because the apple of their eye is ready to start coaching again. If we start seeing more ex-Steelers coaches join Bowles staff, then you know the jig is up.

  12. Rayjay1122 Says:

The wrong Glazer is calling the shots. Jay Glazer for owner!!

  13. Pewter Power Says:

Money was no factor they just love Todd Bowles. Translation winning and fans don’t matter only how we feel about the coach

  14. Dbbuc711 Says:

They lived Dungy too but still fired him

  15. gp Says:

    @gotbbucs
Nice theory except for one thing.
The announcement that Bowles was staying came more than a week before Tomlin resigned, and even longer before we knew Tomlin planned to sit out a year(at least).

  16. Gofortheface30 Says:

I’m not even sure what your point is “Popmike.” The Seahawks have been to 4, FOUR Superbowls since 2005, and their executive team operates in a completely different fashion and more transparently than the Glazers. It’s not just “winning” the Super Bowl, it’s also being consistently good year in and year out, double digit wins. In the past 13 years, they’ve won atleast 10 in ten of of those seasons. Just using them as an example – because when you wax poetic of the Glazers like they could do no wrong, and that they’re the best of the best of something, then I have some unfortunate news for you. I’m also not in to basing very important decisions just because you think he’s a swell guy

  17. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“No, Glazer replied firmly. “They just love him. … … They love him. They love him. They absolutely love him.””

Welp, I’ll say this like Bowles & Licht or not, the Glazers likely extended both because they kept us somewhat competitive when our cap situation was against us and we lost a ton of older talent for various reasons.

Was it the right call? Time’ll tell, but again I can remember being a fan of this team in ‘14 WISHING we could be as “good” as we were in 2010. In my opinion, in terms of being a fan thinking for ownership, is underlooked and likely the reason the Glazers kept their guys.

Again, I’m not crying over Bowles/Licht being here, this is the time of year most franchise are setting themselves to hit their ‘26 offseason marks. Home in on their outlook, and start taking a crap ton of calculated risks. I’m more concerned with the draft pecking order as far as talent, then I am about front office stuff.

Leave that to the Execs and CPAs, cause that’s what ownership is doing while they schmooze to yacht rock and all types of opulence.

  18. snookman Says:

The truth is he is a minority head coach who led the franchies to 3 striaght NFC south title prior to 2025.

To fire a Minority Head Coach is a bad look for the franchise after what outsiders may precieve as success.

To fire a Minority head coach for a white coordinator (Liam Coen) after leading the Bucs to a division title and playoff birth……….is a bad look.

The Glazers do not want to be percieved as a franchise that does not give equal oppourtunities.

My opinions on Todd bowles…………Great man, Great leader, he represents the organiziation with class and the players love him,,,,,,,hes a
    terrible head coach.

  19. Stanglassman Says:

This is what we needed. We haven’t heard the fans whine enough that Bowles was retained.

  20. HeartyDickerson Says:

I don’t believe for a second this was about anything other than money. The Glazers are just lying through their teeth.

They’re billionaires but they don’t just have a Scrooge style vault of gold coins to bathe in. They likely have set budgets for individual expenses like coaching staffs. After firing the Man U coach, they likely determined that paying Bowles and a new HC would exceed that coaching budget and decided to keep him.

  21. Lt. Dan Says:

Todd Bowles Retention Situation “Made No Sense To Me”. No sh!t.

  22. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Jay…

It makes zero sense to the rest of us, too.

We’re as flummoxed as you are, lol.

  26. ModHairKen Says:

They love him? Fine. Make him an ambassador. Special Envoy.

But love has nothing to do with winning.

  29. HopetheBucswin Says:

    Suh!

  30. Bee Says:

If thats the case, then they love losing.

  31. Richard Says:

Bowles is far and away the worst head coach in the NFL….retaining him is HUGE mistake I realize that owners don’t make decisions based on fan input. However, when over 90% of loyal fans have no hesitation to express their displeasure it becomes a matter of common sense. His record is that of a below average coach and the decision to retain him pisses off over 90% of the fans it’s impossible to understand why this decision was made. I feel that Arians had a large influence in this which is absurd. Bowles never earned this job, he was appointed to satisfy Arians….a BS reason to gift the job to an incompetent coach. His record in prime time games is abysmal and embarrassing….a coach must prepare his team to play best when best is needed . I’m a 30 year season ticket owner but no more. I love the Bucs but despise this decision!!!

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Jay Glazer … “It made no sense to me — to keep him but make him fire everybody on the staff.”

Jay Glazer either has a bunch of inside information or he’s making one huge assumption. Also looks to me like Jay is being rather melodramatic; Bowles didn’t fire ‘everybody on the staff. He did replace 2 coordinators, neither of whom set the world on fire (oops, take that back; actually they did, in an Emperor Nero sort of way). He also let go 2 defensive assistant coaches & another retired (probably long overdue).

I tend to think that the Glazers are really concerned about creating another decade (2009-2018) of coaching turmoil. After they let Chucky following the 2008 season, they went through FOUR head coaches (and coaching staffs) and got miserable results in return. Whether you like Arians & Bowles or not, in the 7 years since they arrived, the Bucs have won the NFS South 4 times, been to the playoffs 5 times, and won a Super Bowl. Our record during those 7 years is 66-51, and yes, that’s with Bowles as our DC for all 7 years and HC for 4.

Also convinced though that this is Todd’s last chance; produce or it’s the highway. MIGHT be the same for Jason Licht. Glazers may very well have told them both … ‘You dug this hole together. Now figure out how to get out of it together. You’ve got 1 year to make that happen.’

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

Ill be surprised at how much support Todd Bowles receives next season. Its make or break for him.Every game he loses at home, he will be booed off the field. Bowles fired quite a few coaches. Then arguably hired an OC who is not better than his last. And the biggest kicker of all, he failed to hire a DC to help him. Most of us fans are gonna sit back and watch. The Bucs owners, The Glazers really may have screwed this one up.

  34. Lakeland Says:

Too bad Jay Glazer isn’t one of the IMPORTANT Glazers
His opinion carry as much weight as a grain of salt

    😭😭😂😂😝😝

  35. Ash Says:

Who gives a rats a$$ what he did, we all saw what happened he lost the team you don’t get that back are they gonna fire all the players too? Yeah so great yay.

  36. DoooshLaRue Says:

Didn’t Herr Goodell just say that the NFL didn’t have enough Blakk HCs?
    🤔

  37. Lakeland Says:

The ONLY opinion that’s relevant is the opinion of the owners

And they have made their decision weeks ago
All of these Delusional opinions of others, makes ZERO sense

    Because they have no meaning

  38. Whatevs Says:

    Sleepy Todd is getting PAID.

    Dude is working the Glazers.

    Gotta give home credit

Didn’t Herr Goodell just say that the NFL didn’t have enough Blakk HCs

    ————————————————————————————————

Having “Blakk HCs” just to have minorities in place is idiotic!
If ever anyone wants to show minorities deserve high positions, they need to STOP hiring the mediocre, subpar people and actually Find minorities that prove that they can lead winning teams…
Bowels IS a BAD candidate to make that point!

  40. Crazyhorse54 Says:

Even if the stadium is empty, they still get millions from TV contracts and other resources. So, outside of ego being hurt low attendance means nothing. All it does mean is that fans from rival cities get more tickets making home games feel like away games.

  41. DBS Says:

How many participation trophies did the Bucs receive for winning one of the worst division Championships? Especially with some of the worst win loss records?

  42. Outrigger Says:

The Glazers record since buying the team in 1995 is 231-253. The only reason they won 2 Super Bowls was because of Rich McKay, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden and Tom Brady. They’ve hired some awful coaches through the years like Lovie, Schiano, Raheem, Koetter and now Bowles who was forced on all of us by Bruce Arians. They took us through the most decade and some really bad football.

  43. Outrigger Says:

    Lost Decade

  44. Mike C Says:

    Lost Decade…. it started with a SB….

  45. HC Grover Says:

That does it. Throw them in the Bay. Fire the Glazers. OUT!

  46. Obvious Says:

We’ve heard this from other reporters, mostly local, so it’s coming from someone in the org if not from a glazer directly.

If it’s true, it’s extremely disturbing. It’s no way to make business decisions.

However, I don’t think it is. IMO it’s what they’re telling them because they don’t have anything else to and they want to burn a year off that contract before resetting leadership before ‘27.

  47. Sal Volatile Says:

Jay Glazer: Todd Bowles Retention Situation “Made No Sense To Me”
    ^^^^^

    It made perfect sense to me. Several times I used the analogy { The Glazers are the cowboys that have ridden into a box canyon and are now surrounded by Injuns. }

For many reasons they were forced to keep Bowles in my opinion.

I expect further changes on the defense side to occur slowly this spring in an effort to keep Bowles’ head above water but resulting in big changes to the defense. I may be wrong and I really don’t care but I believe Bowles is being ushered out the gate in a very slow and gentle manner that benefits him and the owners and the next HC.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“to keep him but make him fire everybody on the staff”

To my knowledge, this has never been done in the past with any team? Am I wrong?
I’ve certainly never seen it, but my focus is mostly on our team.

If it works…and I think there is at least a slim chance it does…other teams might do the same in the future.

    But like I said…slim chance.

Still no moves to replace the defensive staff.

  49. SOFIERCE Says:

Glacier’s love him so much keep Todd B, meanwhile, the fans will take a leap year off. Next year we will either win two more games than what we did or even lose two more games than what we did either way, not enough to keep interest to root for a whole season.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Outrigger Says:
“The only reason they won 2 Super Bowls was because of Rich McKay, Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden and Tom Brady.”

    You forgot Bruce Arians.

You do realize the whole idea is to bring in the people who can win championships? You are calling a positive a negative.

  51. Stuck with Green Says:

Bowles’s defense gives up more points in the red zone than any defense in the NFL and the owners love him?

  52. Darin Says:

They must love him because that decision will cost them alot of money

  53. Bucs3 Says:

Thank you Jay for saying what other media personalities would not say

Truth is BOWLES IS NOT A HC

Glazers absolutely kept Bowles because the money

That was a possibility on my list too. Jay’s “Made no sense to me” has been echoing through the entire fan base. The whole scenario was just so strange.

As autopen would say “Come on man” there is no reason or need for hatred. If you are trolling fine. If you truly feel that way you have problems.

  60. Sal Volatile Says:

There are some so called “pieces of work” lingering around here.

  61. Sal Volatile Says:

I do believe the owners love Todd Bowles and feel that they owe him a lot. Bowles took it on the chin during the TB BA BL fiasco and the pressure never really let up. Todd and Jason weathered a big storm together while the owners stayed silent and offered no public support that I was aware of. I may be way off base on this because all I have for information is what I see here on JBF and what I used to see on the field. I have been both supportive and critical and do believe a change is needed at HC. But in retrospect one day in the future I believe Bowles’ tenure will be viewed in a positive way. That fact alone is quite the accomplishment for this team.

  62. RASH Says:

bad news bowles has dirty pictures he uses to a certain Gazor kep his job tonight he is hanging with dummy smith and josh freeman eating ww’s

  63. Oscar Says:

I thought Jenna Laine reported that the decision to fire the coaches was entirely in Bowles hands, that he was not ordered to do so. If true, I’m surprised Jay Glazer didn’t know that since he’s Mr Insider.

  64. #1bucsfan Says:

Everyone still crying about Bowles I see. lol. For as much as yall whine on this site. Do yall whine this much to your girls , friends or co-worker ? Probably don’t cause im sure they told yall to shut up already and that’s why you come here to cry 😂

  65. Haleywould Says:

And here I thought keeping Todd Bowles was 1 bad decision by ownership. It turns out it was 6…

  66. David Says:

Wow! Some of you are ABSOLUTELY TRIPPING OUT ON HEAVY DRUGS!

A great leader? Yeah, your standards are the SAME that kept us out of Any and All contention from the freaking play offs FOR A DECADE much the less to even DREAM of competing for a Super Bowl!

Yeah, what we need is more Bozo Bowles to EMBARRASSE US BEYOND BELIEF! 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮!

What is you people’s malfunction? I have a feeling you guys smoke EXTRA medical Mary Jane and honestly with some of the Purely Fantasy takes, It’s HARD to believe your not taking “Mushrooms” on a Very Regular bases!

Do we REALLY NEED to go back through the Pages of reasons that not only is Bozo a BAD COACH, he’s NO LESS THAN A LIABILITY!

Some of you just Absolutely CONFIRM WHY THAT I WILL NOT RENEW MY SEASON TICKETS, I WON’T EVEN PURCHASE THE “SIDE” ALL 22! NOT A PENNY! ABSOLUTELY NOT A PENNY WILL BE SPENT UNTIL BOWLES IS LONG GONE! ”

BECAUSE OF FORCED CONTINUAL SUFFERING” , NOT A PENNY WILL BE SPENT ON THIS TEAM FOR “TWO YEARS!”. Now that I’m doing my part in Making Glazers suffer as much as they are making me suffer beyond ALL INTELLIGENT REASONING! IT’S “TWO YEARS” OF NOT A PENNY!

And please have NO DOUBT that I’m ABSOLUTELY ADVOCATING for this “management group” to SELL THE FRANCHISE! They are Absolutely Unqualified owners! They wouldn’t have made ANY SORT OF MOVE to go for a Super Bowl if Brady didn’t come along! As well as the man who Actually Cared about the “Success of the franchise AND it’s Fans (Malcom Glazer)” has passed away! It WAS his passion that Won Us Our First Super Bowl! The “children couldn’t care less about EITHER!”

The SOONER the Glazers are GONE, THE BETTER!

Don’t even bother with “careful what you wish for” because whether the few confused get it or not, it CAN’T get much worse than what we have NOW! Welcome to the next Lost Decade! It ALREADY STARTED incase some of you missed it! PLEASE!

As a True Fan, Glazers, GET OUT! You DON’T CARE about One Team much the less TWO! Go be soccer owners. “THAT’S” what you really care about anyways…. I’m SURE they’ll have a very nice and brand new stadium as This Old Stadium IS FALLING APART! You people DON’T DESERVE my money and YOU WILL NOT get a freshly minted penny from me for a MINIMUM of TWO YEARS since you thought it would be cute to give the “FANS” the middle finger! Glazers, GO AWAY…… I WANT THE NEXT MALCOM! NOT HIS UNCARING, UNLOVING, SPOILED CHILDREN!

  67. David Says:

Sorry, I missed “Un LOYAL” to their own franchises “fans”! I certainly didn’t mean to leave it out….

  68. Bowles Wasn’t Held Accountable Says:

Finally, a Glazer with some common sense.

  69. BucU Says:

Get used to the Bowles bashing. It’s going to happen every single day he’s still HC. The cowards who own this team make me sick.

  70. BUC WATCHER Says:

ABSOLUTELY DISTURBING…….ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE… WELL DONE JAY GLAZER…….YOU SUCK !!!

  71. Buckit Says:

Stop pouring salt in the wounds; it’s time to focus on the nuances of the off-season. Things like salary cap, draft picks, free agents, rounding out the coaching staff, etc.

  72. doolnutts Says:

Funny to me.. Dungy and Gruden both did better but were fired for less. I think its only a matter of time. I dont think we tank but I do think well be around an 8 to 9 win football team. I think hell need more than that to save his job but well see.

IMO this is a 12 win football team. We should win every division game and beat bad teams. I think we have seen what the team can do by beating teams like Seattle but then we see what our bad defense will do against Falcons, Saints others etc. There is only one common denominator holding us back

  73. Dadgumit Says:

Another exposed example of team Glazer pearl clutching that 328 defence.

  74. budlikedthebucarros Says:

doolnutts correct hire both of them back father dungy DC Gruden OC McCay gm
those guys should have never been fired in the first place tlook at the dungy coaching tree and his defence and Chucky is Chucky loved the bucs

  75. Hugh Glazerhouse Says:

My one daily allowance, THE GLAZERHOUSES SUCK!

  76. JDStill Says:

It had to be a business decision not a football decision. The Glazers probably believe they will make more money with a good team and a crappy head coach that will never win much more than 50 percent of the games he coaches , while keeping football crazy fans engaged and in seats and guaranteeing they will never do better , thus not having to worry about paying the added costs incurred by players and coaches who play on a SuperBowl winning team expecting to be compensated as such , or finding replacements for those players and coaches who move on when they are not paid for Their SuperBowl efforts, oh well, business is business.

  77. JackBall Says:

Licht is one of the problems. He’s covering for Bowles. Licht persuades the Glazers to keep Bowles. He has missed so many drafts for a defensive player.

  78. View from 132 Says:

They are about to become the 2nd most interesting team on Dale Mabry when the new baseball stadium is ready.

  79. I glazer Says:

Dumb Bucs move. First after having just lost 3 offensive coordinators in3 years, why would you give the coach another chance? If you are going to start over start over with a new coach who can get some stability and longevity in their staff so the players believe they are working for someone who will be there. Two what manager stays when his entire hand picked staff is fired? I will tell youwho, the coach who has no other options beyond this job. Bugs will stink this year with all these changes and then we will do it again next year. Looks like we decided to be the Yucks again. Go Jax. I’m converting as this is a mess

  80. Swampy Says:

A two word response to the Bowles critics. Schiavo Koetter. It was absolutely embarrassing to be a Bucs fan during their tenures. We’ve been competitive for three seasons after Brady left. Let’s see what next season brings. Or are many Bucs fans in “I hope we suck” mode to ensure a coaching change?

  81. Justin Says:

There is one other possibility, which is that there simply wasn’t the right replacement out there. If the Glazers wanted to replace him with an offensive style head coach, who were the real candidates? McDaniel? Tampa isn’t hiring Miami’s cast-off (even if he would probably be an upgrade over who we got). Which means you’re putting all your eggs in the Kubiak basket. All the other significant coaches either weren’t on the market yet (Tomlin) or had demands that the Glazers wouldn’t meet (Harbaugh) or they are defensive coaches which is the exact mold of TB today (such as a Saleh). There simply wasn’t an obvious offensive-based replacement.

  82. James west Says:

Maybe the glazers expect monumental failure this season defensively so they can can bowels and get a top 5 pick or better in the draft

  83. Rocket10 Says:

Bowles threw Mayfield under the bus. If he didn’t like what he was seeing, he should have talked to him in private or benched him. I mention this in regards to this article because retaining Bowles creates a potential locker room disaster that puts Bowles supporters ( many)vs Mayfield’s As long as offense is strong no problem, as soon as it’s not watch out. It’s not good to go into season with a quarterback who feels his coach doesn’t have his back, it’s conducive to conservative play, hesitation etc.
