Baker Mayfield Talks March Revitalization

February 1st, 2026

At high noon on Monday, March 9, the annual free agency dinner bell will ring.

That’s when Bucs fans will begin to find out if Tampa Bay is all-in on the 2026 season.

It’s also near the time when Bucs franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield will start thinking about Xs and Os and winning games again.

Mayfield joined The Rondé Barber Show last week, a WFLA-TV streaming property. There Mayfield talked about how he’s in full body-recovery mode and how he has to remove himself from the game every year.

“I have to step away from it a little bit,” Mayfield said. “I’m mentally drained … and it’s more of a mental break for me than it is physical.

“I’ll start itching to get back and start working out way more so than I will [think], ‘Alright what schemes do I need to go look at today?’ I’ll start working out first, and then I’ll start looking at tape. I’d rather have a conversation about schemes than actually sitting down and watching tape. Until about March for me, that’s when I start thinking, ‘Ball.’ …”Until March hits, I’m not really thinking football.”

Mayfield added that he’ll return to training in February — and always wants to — but he won’t grind with video until March.

Barber, the Bucs legend, noted he was a March guy, too. Why? Because that was when chatter heated up about free agents possibly coming to the Bucs and potential plans to replace him,” Barber said.

He should heal up well b4 too strong of work outs. Let the old body recover for 7 or 8 weeks.

  2. Bucman Says:

WHAT steps are the Bucs taking to fix the defense????

  3. Lakeland Says:

He need to protect his body like TB12

Brady never took unnecessary hits, he threw the ball away
Guys like Mayfield, Jackson, Allen are always banged up
Especially during the late season, and postseason
Brady always prepared himself for the long haul
He knew he had to be prepared to play 20 – 21 games

Baker need to more of a QB, and less of a RB
He has weapons around him, get them the ball
We need a QB with a big S on his jersey
Because these defenses are his kryptonite

  4. Gipper Says:

    Lakeland,

Think Baker is in favor of avoiding contact. All that takes is an Oline that can protect. O line last season was pathetic with 3rd string, junior varsity gaurds. There was no middle of the pocket to step into as the front 3 was consistently collapsed into Baker.

  5. JimBobBuc Says:

With a healthy line in front of him, I expect a great season from Bake. Like most QB’s, I’m expecting him to review his fundamentals like footwork. In practice again, I hope he continues to work on looking off defenders and improve his touch passes.

While Healing the Ol’ Body is very exciting!

The Buccanneer Powers that Be …… better get their Collective Head out of their Butt!!!

Eagles DC Vic Fangio Leaning Towards 2026 Return, Has Not Ruled Out Retirement

I think the Eagles have their eye on Jim Schwartz and will hire him in a New York Minute and that would stick us with Todd I should be Cleaning Toilet Bowles rather than Coaching!!!!

Great Googly Moogly, why are the Bucs Snoozing!??!??!

  7. LynchMob50 Says:

No need to wait until March. We already have our answer.

They are all in on running back an embarrassing failure and inept coaching.

Even Baker won’t say anything positive about the guy in charge of the team.

If the QB1 refuses to back the HC, then you have real issues that can’t be fixed in free agency.

We’re stock in mock draft season perpetually to avoid the reality of the situation.

    I agree with the gipper.
just read an article on Sam darnold, talking how well he is doing and about why he seems relaxed in the pocket this year. The pressure of having to win every game with just the offense isn’t in his head. Seattle has a defense that really helps in taking that pressure away. I can’t say that we had that

  9. purplebeard Says:

And the pocket wasn’t constantly collapsing on him!
