Baker Mayfield Blasts Kevin Stefanski

January 21st, 2026

Calls out former coach and new Atlanta coach Kevin Stefanski.

Boy, this blast from Baker Mayfield sure came out of the blue!

We’re starting to reach the outskirts of the winter blues, where a lack of football and cold weather combine to test a man’s soul. (Don’t worry. There are still three games left in the 2025 NFL season and the combine is about a month away.) But holy cow, did Mayfield sure throw a brick of lit M-80s into the middle of Central Avenue last night.

Joe’s good friend D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution inadvertently caught a stray, getting under Mayfield’s skin with an innocent twitter yesterday and Mayfield turned that into a blast at new Dixie Chicks coach Kevin Stefanski, who was Mayfield’s coach for his last two seasons in Cleveland.

How did you spend your Tuesday night?

It seems there’s bad blood between Mayfield and Stefanski. And Joe doesn’t blame Mayfield for being peeved. After leading the Browns to the playoffs in 2020 and having Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs on the playoff ropes on the road, the next year, Mayfield got injured in 2021. And it’s pretty obvious Stefanski dumped him on the sidewalk like an unwanted puppy since Mayfield was traded to the Panthers by the Browns.

And Mayfield, if you haven’t guessed by now, does not forget when he’s been shafted.

Boom! And you have to figure the NFL secretly loves this. Drama sells!

Joe’s just going to throw this out there: No later than Week 3, the Bucs will play the Dixie Chicks either on Monday or Thursday Night Football.

Educated bet: Take the Bucs on the moneyline when the two teams first tangle this fall.

The Stafanski/Penix relationship is gonna be an interesting watch lol, Bucs def dodged a bullet by this hire.

  2. Kenton Smith Says:

Penix has had 3 Serious knee surgeries. But Mayfield isn’t mad at Penix. Arthur Blank is, was, and always has been an idiot of an owner. And you think Stefanski was embarrassed by the Watson fiasco? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

  3. Kenton Smith Says:

Seems like I remember when Baker trashed talked Brady a year or two ago that the next thing I heard out of Brady’s mouth was “oh my god! What a dime! That may be the best pass I’ve ever seen”. Then he handed Baker his MVP of the game, or dawg of the day, or whatever it was. You guys remember that pass to JMac on the flag. Right? I’m still in awe of that throw. So was Tom.

  4. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Yikes!

  5. Bee Says:

Baker has 45 turnovers since 2023 tied for league lead with Geno Smith.

Baker can’t beat the Falcons without Stefanski and it took them missing a FG to beat them at the start of the season. No one is scared of Baker, especially with how he ended the season on a 2-7 slide. He needs to focus on playing better not trash talking a coach who wasn’t even talking to him.

  6. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

Not if Cousins is playing Joe. And no you have to be drunk to pick the Bucs while Todd is here. lol

  7. heyjude Says:

Love it! Go Baker! Go Bucs!

  8. MJ Says:

Bake is trying trying to inspire his off season work out program, add some pounds to the bench press. Unfortunately Baker has 10 more guys on offense and 11 on defense that need to feel the same way for this bulletin board quote to work

  9. JA Says:

Sub .500 career QB mad at sub .500 career coach for not sending him a “Happy Trails” text or ‘best wishes’ Hallmark card after being traded.
QB expresses anger over “garbage” treatment by former team and coach and cannot wait to face former coach twice a year after he takes job in Atlanta.
Baker—some might care about your anger in Tampa or in Atlanta, but for the large part, nobody cares.
This is where I wonder about the maturation level of a QB on the other side of 30. Baker didn’t need to say this, a child … maybe.
Baker is not some superstar with a fist full of Super Bowls. He’s a zero championship, sub .500 guy who just opened a door that didn’t need opening. The only way this can go for Baker is down. If he beats Atlanta, who cares? But if he loses he will look like a fool.
This was a time to say it didn’t end well in Cleveland, but he’s past that now and wishes Stefanski luck, except when playing the Bucs of course—or say nothing at all.Come on, Baker. You’re past 30. Time to grow up.

  10. Hugh Glazerhouse Says:

Bee…oring. Whose side are you on? This is awesome. It’s what makes Baker unique and tick. We need more, not less.

  11. Hodad Says:

Joe, betting the Bucs to win is a good way to get your legs broken.

  12. MelvinJunior Says:

Oh My God. That’s really going to hurt him when it comes time for his next contract, and bla, blah, blah. Lmao. I remember just a couple of days ago, when there were soooo many people on here, who said the exact same thing about RWhite hahahah. LoL. Hog Wash. Now, let’s see how consistent these people are when RWhite really said a BUNCH of NOTHING.

  13. MelvinJunior Says:

JA says it best! Could not have been stated ANY BETTER. His best comment on here. I also, have questioned his maturity level, now in HIS 30’s. I really don’t get the whole Baker Mayfield OBSESSION. It’s very weird. Especially, for an “ADULT.” I can see being an 8-14 year old KID. But, not an actual adult.

  14. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Hugh Glazerhouse Says: “Bee…oring. Whose side are you on? This is awesome. It’s what makes Baker unique and tick. We need more, not less.”

NOT from your QB you don’t. So, I guess you’re “one of those” then, who LOVES the ‘head-bunting’ Linemen, and getting up into opponents faces every time he runs for 6-yards, & etc. ABSURD.

  15. First Last Says:

Idc what other say about this cause football is prime entertainment. This IS entertaining…. Nfl could be rigged for all I care as long as it entertains me. Much like “professional” wrestling.

  16. MelvinJunior Says:

It’s EMBARRASSING, folks. Take off your Baker-colored rose glasses. It’s pretty pathetic. It’s weird.

  17. purplebeard Says:

Ok , joe; I guess you needed to throw all the QB “experts” on here a bone. They need something to gnaw on as well.

  18. 19kill@ Says:

Baker Mayfield had the Chiefs on the ropes Mahomes goes down, Chiefs are on a 3rd-string QB, and Baker still can’t close. That’s the difference between a guy and a franchise QB. Baker has taken a SB contending team and turned it into a fringe playoffs team at best. We deserve better at QB.

  19. purplebeard Says:

And I see that all the baker sceptics have already weighed in with their insightful analysis.

  20. MelvinJunior Says:

RWhite = NOT a big deal, and will have ZERO effect during his next contract negotiations. But, BAKER = WILL play a factor in HIS next contract talks. And, that’s the difference between a RB/WR/Defensive Player on a team, versus your supposed STARTING (“franchise”) QUARTERBACK. Trust-ME… NO Head Coach wants ANY of THAT from his ‘starting’ QB. Not one under 30. DEFINITELY, not one OVER 30.

  21. MelvinJunior Says:

@ 19kill – Was that the Colt McCoy game!? That wasn’t really that long ago, either. Seems like it tho!

  22. Coconut Doughnut Says:

Wait, Joe is looking forward to the combine?

  23. MelvinJunior Says:

Couldn’t even beat Ewers. Yeah, McDaniel was coming HERE. Lmao

  24. It’s Exciting!!!! Says:

    3 and 28
    We got this Joe!

  25. Bosch Says:

“ Educated bet: Take the Bucs on the moneyline when the two teams first tangle this fall..”

    Not if Bowels is HC.

  26. purplebeard Says:

From most of the comments here, I can only conclude that, if not for Baker Mayfield, this team would be winning Superbowls. One reason? He gave the opposing teams too many seconds at the end of games for them to come back and win. Yes, 3rd and 24, and baker should have figured out how to stop them. Bring back Trask?

  27. MikeBuc Says:

Told Ya! right here in these comments. The only way that Stefanski was NOT a meh pick was that Baker will be up for every atlanta game next season.

Forget the Saints. The new bloodfest is the falcons as long as Baker is here.

    ——-

do we need anymore proof that online kiddies are delusional. Mr caps actually thinks he gets to question anyone’s maturity level.

you guys need to watch curling and make mom warm your milk. Whining about an X post in a sport where people get slammed to the ground routinely.

  29. heyjude Says:

On the way to work, listening to 620, it was pointed out again that Ledbetter really started this exchange. Good for Baker for calling it all out. That is our QB and we are so lucky we got him after Brady. Look at what happened to the Browns for choosing the wrong QB and dumping Baker. We are all like a family with the Bucs. You can disagree with family, friends, and some colleagues. But if anyone wrongs them, we got their backs!

  31. MelvinJunior Says:

OMG. Now, that I’ve actually had the chance to digest Baker’s comments… What a DUMB statement. Just REAL REAL DUMBBBBBB. God, that’s sooooo STUPID. Yeah, we really needed THAT. They’re gonna be CHOMPING AT THE BIT. You KNOW Bowles sure did not appreciate it! Hell, NO COACH would. You’d sure expect much better outta your 31-YEAR OLD Quarterback. We are witnessing ‘the end’ of the Baker Mayfield Era in Tampa.

  32. MelvinJunior Says:

    * the beginning of the end.

  33. Bee Says:

    @hugh glazerhouse

I’m on the side of logic and reason. Baker was talking to his former coach by responding to a tweet by a reporter. Think about that for a sec. Baker is basically talking to himself. Smh…goes to show you how intelligent he is. Baker is good at talking and carrying a chip on his shoulder but when it comes time to execute when the season is on the line he fails.

This team needs less talking and more execution. This is what I mean when I talk about leadership. If you wonder why the team faltered offensively down the stretch, this is why. Baker is mentally weak and this proves it. If he wasn’t he would let his play do the talking and WIN.

Again I say, NO ONE is scared of Baker.

  34. Wouldn’t pay a single Buc to see this squad Says:

For all his talk, we sure did show everyone this year by sucking terribly. Talk is cheap. Put it on the field losers.

  35. Wouldn’t pay a single Buc to see this squad Says:

Keyboard courage and Internet muscles don’t make a team Baker. Not sure if you saw our squad last year.

  36. ATLBUC Says:

We’re a dangerous team in the first half of seasons!

  37. Wilder32 Says:

Mayfield was the fall guy in Cleveland for a defense that couldn’t stop anyone or hold any late leads. Sound familiar?

  38. MelvinJunior Says:

WHERE are all the RWhite bashers for what HE said!? When, he said a lot of nothing!

  39. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Bee Says: “If he wasn’t he would let his play do the talking and WIN.”

That’s exactly right! You don’t see Sam Darnold, Bo Nix, Matt Stafford, Drake Maye, or ANY of THEM “talkin” BS. And, MANY others. Ya know why that is… It’s because they are all too busy actually WINNING. 💯

Baker has 45 turnovers since 2023 tied for league lead with Geno Smith.

How many Ints did Winston have his last season with us?

  41. bucnjim Says:

I wish our defense had that kind of fire…….from anyone! Mayfield may not be Brady or Josh Allen, but with even an average defense he’ll win most games. Let’s see how many games the Bucs win when they don’t give up the go ahead score.

    Scoring Defense:
    Broncos D 3rd
    Patriots D 4th
    Seahawks D 1st
    Rams D 10th
All four remaining teams are at the top in scoring defense! Fix this and we’ll be OK

  42. MikeBuc Says:

    @bee

Since EVERYTHING has to be explained to you

When the grown up a see a post from you where the word Baker appears

Whoa! I always liked JM since A&M with Mike Evans. He is doing better now. It isn’t all cupcakes and confetti out there.

  44. bucnjim Says:

Bucs gave up as many touchdowns as the Raiders and they are picking first in the NFL draft. Tied with the NY Giants picking 6th in the draft.

  45. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Baker needs to worry about watching tape and the playbook. We was one of the worst rated QBs in the NFL over the last 8 weeks of the season. He should also stop the damn commercials. Look at his history in Cleveland with all the commercials….crashed and burned.

  46. Becky Says:

I am from Cleveland and for all of you criticizing Baker’s comments about Stephanski, you don’t know what you are taking about. I love this!!! Baker has every reason to criticize Stephanski, because the guy stuck a knife in his back. Stephanski going to Atlanta is literally the BEST thing that could have happened to the Bucs, since The BUCS put themselves in our current position of lacking better coaching. The Stephanski stuff could have lit a fire back in Baker that could bring good results for the BUCS. Anybody criticizing Baker’s comments obviously does not understand what motivates Baker Mayfield. Now it is time for this team to bring in Nate Scheelhaase and get serious. It’s time for Bowles and Licht to focus on the positions of need. And it’s time for ownership to understand that this is the last chance we the fans give Todd and Jason to get it right.

  47. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Stefanski is like the offensive version of Bowles,, he had a few good years being a coordinator and since he’s been at Cleveland his D has alway outplayed the O (due to Schwartz ),, he’s a so called offensive guru as Bolwes is a so called defensive guru ,, Hopefully Schwartz stays away from Atlanta

Responding to the Bee/Melvin club is a waste of time. That being said Sam Darnold was Baker’s backup in Carolina. He was a second string backup in Seattle until he was elevated due to Geno Smith’s top tier salary demand. He has thrown more INT this season than Baker but he plays for a team with a defense that can hold a lead.

  49. Smashsquatch Says:

Love this. Finally something to get excited about. Sure hope we see this fire & passion from the rest of the team. Now go find an OC AND DC Glazers. Let’s see the same passion from ownership. Because if you think you can squeeze a different result out of Todd’s D next year, well that’s simply insane thinking. We need two proven coordinators OR a new HC. Make it happen!

  50. Bee Says:

    Mikebuc

If no one reads what I write, including you, then why respond to my post when I didn’t mention you? Lol…

  51. MelvinJunior Says:

@ bucnjim – the “winning” comment was more of a slap. Though, still true regardless if they’re actually ‘winning’ that particular season, or not. Bottomline being, you DON’T hear that type of ‘childish’ NONSENSE from ANY NFL (‘franchise’) Starting QB. And, for very good reason. Actually, for lots of reasons. Mostly, because no HC or FO worth their salt, would ever stand for it. Diva WR’s/Defensive Players, it’s a lot more expected and not as big of a deal. But, Quarterbacks… THE LEADER of YOUR FRANCHISE. Just Hail Naw. No way Jose. It’s a REAL BAD Look.

  52. thepunch Says:

shut up and play good ball. Baker has a vendetta against everyone it is tiring. Concentrate on the Now.

  53. Becky Says:

Bee “nobody is scared of Baker”. 😂😂😂 I doubt that is what people were thinking in the first half of last season. Baker didn’t go from being the only candidate in the running for MVP to struggling in the second half of the season because he just lost his talent🙄There was alot wrong in Tampa, and Baker was the least of it, but it all caught up with the team by mid season. I am talking about the fact that we can’t tackle anyone, pressure anyone, cover anyone, or protect Baker. We only had about 30 sacks all season which is abysmal, and our secondary is bottom 3. Those are the main issues with the team and baker is not responsible for any of them. If your think so highly of Drake Maye, Matt Stafford, and Sam Darnold, then why are you on a BUCS comment forum? You are welcome to get on the Rams, Seahawks, or Patriots comment forum any time you like. Nobody on here will miss your lack of football knowledge.

  54. MelvinJunior Says:

It’s always ALL about Baker 24/7/365. Just ASK HIM. All this “unselfishness” talk, and HIM “mentoring” his next potential replacement, & etc. is nothing but just PURE FANTASY. An ‘Adult’ Bucs Fantasyland.

  55. It's Corn Says:

    Mayfield is awesome

  56. Hodad Says:

I’m a chicken hawk and you’re a chicken. Chicken Hawks eat chickens!

  57. bob in valrico Says:

When and if Baker beats Atlanta twice then he can have his” How do You like me now” moment. he is 2-4 against Atlanta in the last three years. Until then he should let his play do the talking. He needs to play smart and avoid injury as much as possible.

  58. heyjude Says:

Becky- Right on! Yes to Baker and yes to Nate as OC!

Nate is my 2nd choice after McDaniel. He would work great with Baker too.

  59. MelvinJunior Says:

@ thepunch – “Tiring.” That’s exactly right. It sure is. When you run for 6-yards and fall down, then GET your ass back UP and to the huddle, and call the NEXT DAMN PLAY. Try bring “focused” for JUST ONCE, Baker.

  60. JustVisiting Says:

No mature athlete and team leader would use trash talk to motivate himself…except that loser Michael Jordan, of course. Get a grip, people.

  61. bob in valrico Says:

Note to Baker, You will be playing the Falcons who you have less than a 57 % completion in 6 games.

  62. Becky Says:

Justvisiting “loser Michael Jordan” If ever anybody was NOT a loser, it’s Michael Jordan 🙄 ” “no mature athlete or leader would use trash talk to motivate themselves” have you actually ever heard of sports?

  63. MelvinJunior Says:

@ JustVisiting – a basketball player, and a QUARTERBACK are two entirely different things. It’s not the same. Nor even CLOSE. And, MJ was extremely childish and an asshole. Ask ANYONE. Though, you can’t compare the two. It’s cool and exciting when MJ does it! It’s embarrassing when Baker does. He just looks like a total FOOL. 💯

  64. Bowles Wasn’t Held Accountable Says:

We know that any HC/OC who remotely knows what they’re doing will run circles around Todd Bowles and his bend AND break defense. The best the Bucs can do is hope the rival coaches show pity on Bowles, like McVay did and didn’t put 55 points on him.

The owners must be very proud of those irrelevant NFC South “titles” that Bowles was bragging about how HE won (not the team, he said “I won the division”). Maybe they can put up a banner if Bowles manages to win 7 games this year, or a participation trophy for him. 🏆

  65. MelvinJunior Says:

Again, where are all the “contract talk” people concerning RWhite!? “He just ruined his chances from teams.” LoL a RUNNING BACK, who said nothing. What do you think Baker’s looking at right now, for HIS next “big” (lol) contract!? What would YOU give him… Lmao 5yrs/$300+MIL!?

  66. FortMyersDave Says:

HeyJude, good point on who made the loser quote. It was not Stefanski but a senior sports writer for the AJC. I am sure Stefanski appreciates a senior journalist putting words in his mouth.

  67. Ugo Says:

    19kill@

Stop trying to revise history, the only reason they lost that game against is because of a blatant uncalled targeting/PI call on Rashard Higgins that resulted in a touchback in the end zone. Basically Baker threw a dime to Higgins who got it just before the end zone and instantly got hit by a helmet to helmet hit causing him to lose possession and fumble out of the endzone.

Anyone who blames Baker for this is 1. A colossal idiot. 2. Biased as all hell. 3. Knows nothing about football and is just looking to throw shade at Baker.

All these but Baker isn’t good in the playoffs guys are hilarious, especially considering that they are throwing shade at the guy who has the highest career playoff passer rating (105.9), even above Mahomes. You guys wouldn’t know a good qb even if he threw you a dime right in the face

  68. Joe Says:

Joe, betting the Bucs to win is a good way to get your legs broken.

Only if you don’t pay. 🙂

  69. Kenton Smith Says:

Baker has played for shlt teams with new OCs his entire career. I hate to call Tampa a shlt team but anyone who saw Brady’s last game here know this was a shlt team. Extremely lost football team. Bakers first game here at Minnesota turned that around. Should have won 10 games but did anyone see what Stroud did after Baker drove us down the field for the go ahead td with under a minute to go. Of course he went 80 yards on 4 passes to beat us. So we only won 9 on our way to second round playoff loss. Good game. Baker 3 td passes, defense gave up 200 yards and 2 tds to the Lions-In the 4th quarter!! Baker turns shlt teams into contenders. Our defense gave up more touchdowns than the Raiders this year. Last defensively in the RedZone. Sucked out loud. All year long. And Bob in Valrico. It’s hard beating a team when you’re up 14 in the 4th quarter and then the other team has 2 eighty yard drives for TDs in the fourth quarter and a long drive for a field goal to beat us by a point. Mayfield threw a pick but Atlanta still had 64 yards to go. Only reason he threw a pick was because they were stomping our defense so bad that we couldn’t run the ball when running the ball was the only thing we should have been doing. Don’t even mention last years first loss to Atlanta. Mayfield smoked their a$$. Bucky fumbled, rookie center had a brain fart, and our defense was our defense. Atlanta sucks and they still did that to us. As far as the buzz that Mayfield is immature and should keep his mouth shut. One of Baker’s strengths is he doesn’t give a rat’s a$$ about what anyone else thinks about him. I said when I followed Baker over here 3 years ago that he’s one of the top 10 QBs I’ve ever seen in this league. Many of this teams fans didn’t think he was top half in the league. In the last three years he has hands down been the best QB in the league and stats bare that out. He just needs to find a team that cares as much about winning as he does. He can lead the horse to water, now it’s time to see how thirsty this horse is.

How can a quarterback like Baker Mayfield talk when he’s on his 4th team ? He’s choked the past 6 games he threw picks late in the 4th quarters in all of those games that lead us to loses . I can’t wait until he’s gone from the bucs.

  72. D-Rome Says:

Stefanski will fail in Atlanta. He’s one of the most overrated coaches in recent memory and a major part of the continued dysfunction in cLEAVEland.

  73. Buddha Says:

Pro football is a team game. Yes, you need a reliable QB, but you don’t need an all world one. Mahomes without a quality defense and offensive line is just another guy. The kid at Buffalo gets you to the playoffs every year and loses. The kid at Baltimore same thing. The kid at San Diego 0-2 in the playoffs Bo Nix, give me a break .he’s an average talent. Philly, a class kid with a great defense. The teams remaining evaded injury deficits. Baker is not flashy but he is tough and is a leader but you don’t win in this league with two injured guards and weak linebackers. Our starting 22 prior to the season were good enough to compete with anyone but no coach could have made it to the Super Bowl what we had playing on the field in the last half of the season.

  74. Aqualung Says:

Baker under 🤡 has regressed to become Dilferesque. The 2026 Bucs under 🤡 might not win a game. Baker should STFU. He’s not good enough to overcome the suckage of 🤡. Of course neither was Tom Brady.

  78. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“By the time it was over, there was a lack of trust on both sides.
Mayfield was annoyed Stefanski missed a meeting the day after the Browns were thrashed by the Patriots and thought the play-caller should attend every session. Stefanski was absent because he was meeting instead with Myles Garrett, according to a source, after Garrett lashed out to the media postgame over the coaching staff’s lack of adjustments at New England.
In one of those “careful what you wish for” moments, Stefanski never missed another meeting and privately shined a glaring spotlight on his quarterback during film sessions from that day forward.

There were plenty of errors to point out. In a league built for close finishes, Mayfield had a passer rating of 17.8 in the final four minutes of games last season when the Browns trailed by one possession or less.

For those insisting it was the shoulder injury hindering him, Mayfield’s career passer rating was 51.1 under the same parameters – 59th in the NFL. His 19 career interceptions in fourth quarters are the second-most in the league since 2018.“

Per Jason Lloyd, Browns beat writer for the athletic back in 2022

I usually don’t care about dudes being catty on the innanet, but the last part grabbed my attention because it sounds so familiar.

Anywho, Baker lashing out about Stefanski and not directly AT/TO Stefanski speaks for itself and it sounds like he need to grow up whilst continuing to move on.

    Hurt people hurt people lol
