Bills Fire Head Coach Sean McDermott

January 19th, 2026

Fired.

Now this is intriguing.

Joe’s phone has been blowing up with Bucs fans barking about the Bills just firing their head coach after a 12-5 season and seven consecutive years of double-digit wins. It seems these fans think McDermott being canned should somehow affect Todd Bowles’ status as Tampa Bay head coach.

It won’t.

McDermott getting launched from Buffalo represents the 10th head coach opening in the NFL this offseason. That total has to be a league record.

Once upon a time in January of 2016, the Buccaneers interviewed McDermott for their head coach opening. They instead went with Dirk Koetter.

Apparently, Buffalo brass had enough of McDermott failing in the postseason, where he has an 8-8 career record. One could argue the Bills got robbed this weekend by a horrendous NFL catch/non-catch rule, but the end result was another winning head coach having his keycard deactivated.

Joe hopes Bowles looks closely at McDermott’s staff for defensive assistant openings.

  1. Dale W Says:

Which ownership is committed to winning and which one is ok with mediocrity?

  2. Show Me the TDs Says:

Makes me wonder what the Glazers and Licht are doing. Winners being fired. Losers staying put. Make it make sense.

  3. KennyJr Says:

    say what?!?!??!? LOL

  4. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

    😂😂😂😂😂
and 50/50 Todd will Division Titles is still here !
The Glazers are the laughing stock of the NFL Owners Club

  5. Newbie Says:

McDermott gets whacked yet Glazers keep Bowles and this regime. It’s stunning to me and shows what a disservice they are doing to their fans of 50 years.

  6. Ufc Says:

Even more fuel to fire this loser and pack his bags. If we dont look at ourselves in the mirror and ask why are top perennial play off teams firing their coach but we have Todd i fong suck bowles here. Do we really know what we’re doing. The answer is no. We do not.
Theres no one more mediocre than this guy. You lost out on Harbaugh. Theres still a chance to make a move. Grow some balls and do it

  7. PSLBucfan Says:

Ya’ think the Falcons are rethinking their early hire now? LOL

  8. Todd Says:

Rewarding Mediocrity is the Buccaneer Ethos

  9. stucbuc Says:

Standards are very low in Tampa bay

  10. Demete Says:

The Bills will likely promote Joe Brady as he has interviewed elsewhere for a HC job. And Pegula does not want to lose his OC, a la Coen to Jacksonville. That is why the Bills made the move. If Coen was still here, he would now be the HC.

  11. Newbie Says:

The difference is Bills hold their people accountable. Bucs create scapegoats and hold no one accountable.

  12. Gipper Says:

When circumstances change ,it’s OK to change your mind. Sean McDermmot is available and is a huge upgrade over TB.

  13. Chris Says:

If I were The Glazers I’d make the move to get him.

  14. ModHairKen Says:

Here’s your one and only chance Glazers, fix this now. Make a move. This guy would be a serious upgrade.

  15. Pewter Power Says:

This is for anyone who comes up with the stupid idea that we would be looking at the lost decade of we fire a mediocre head coach. These are legitimate head coaches being fired

  16. Deeboooo Says:

It seems that Bowles and McDermott are close. Maybe he wants a year out of the lime light to “help” call defense here

  17. Steven007 Says:

Vrabel, who is a first-year head coach, is now the longest tenured coach in the AFC East.

  18. Steven007 Says:

    * check that, Glenn is still there. So second longest tenured coach… Glenn, in his second year is now the longest tenured AFC East coach.

  19. BrianBucs Says:

I have pretty much given up on the Glazers as what they say and what they do are two different things.
I think their kickball club is their first priority since it is so much more financially valuable than the Bucs.
Leaving Bowles intact is an insult to Bucs fans

  20. Kgh4life Says:

Falcons gonna make them their DC

  21. Bucs And Them Says:

Licht & the Glazers still having not made a statement that Bowles is indeed the head coach for 2026 seems to me that there is someone they’re trying to target who perhaps is still involved in the playoffs. A simple statement from them could put that to bed if Bowles is indeed being retained. The silence is deafening.

  22. Steven007 Says:

I am no fan of Todd and thought we should move on. But honestly, I would question more the recent firings of successful head coaches. I’d be very curious which of the teams that fired their successful head coach just now, will have a better season next year with whomever they hire.

  23. Davenport Says:

Seeing excellent, successful coaches being fired and losers like Bowles being retained highlights which teams are competing for championships and which are content with simply making money.

    Bucs fans deserve better

  24. Steven007 Says:

The Ravens, bills, and dolphins all would need to either win their division or win a playoff game to make an improvement over the recent coaching regime. Will be interesting to see if that happens.

  25. heyjude Says:

Holy cow and well done Bills. He has been their coach for a long time and couldn’t get them over the hump. Harbaugh should have waited. He would have been a better fit at Buffalo.

  26. Newbie Says:

Davenport. Yep. You are dead on. Gonna be really funny next season when Bucs host home games vs Pitt, Browns, Packers and Vikings and it turns into a home game for those teams. But hey, their money is green too. That offends the crap out of me but it won’t to the Glazers. This just sucks. Sucks for fans who have stuck by this team for 50 years and they do nothing. Nothing except create a few scapegoats and everything gets deflected by the incompetence of this regime led by JL and TB.

  27. Patrick Says:

McDermott turned around that team. The Bills were the same as the Browns and Jets 9 years ago. He brought them back to prominence.

If your biggest complaint is not being able to get over the hump and advance to the Super Bowl, then you have it good as a fan.

I’d rather have that then go 8-9 and watching our team never get better

  28. Alanbucsfan Says:

Josh Allen, as good as he is, could’ve won that game with accurate throws.

  29. Popmike66 Says:

McDermott getting fire is more trouble for the Bucs OC search. I mean who wouldn’t want to work with a QB like Josh Allen down in Buffalo. That’s if they interview McDaniel and I am pretty sure they will

  30. MadMax Says:

    DC….force the move Jason

  31. BigZ Says:

And Todd still has a job. Standards, it’s what you are willing to accept.

  32. FormerBucFan Says:

Help me out Joe. What was the point of the article.
Same as every other one. Joe writes about whatever Joe finds interesting with a tie to the Bucs. More to come today.–Joe

  33. Newbie Says:

You are what you tolerate! It’s shameful nothing was done in Tampa.

  34. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Hire him for DC position. HC in waiting…;)

  35. ocala Says:

It’s a smart move by the Bills. Most teams are trying to do whatever it takes to win a Super Bowl. Bucs ownership either does not care about winning one or they are clueless. Bowles staying on as head coach is a horrible decision.

  36. BigZ Says:

Makes me wonder what other mediocrity the organization accepts and shouldn’t.

Id said in the office season, they are back to being cheap.

They spend a lot on ManU.

  37. Faspro Says:

It ain’t gonna motivate the Glazers to fire Todd Bowles…at all, it’s not how they roll.
Todd Bowles is here to stay until 2028.

  38. Gman Says:

Finally some of you are beginning to realize what amateurish grifters the Glazers really are. When you renew your tickets
.you are rewarding their incompetence and desire to be irrelevant

  39. Coburn Says:

Another defensive guy who had defensive issues in big moments. Always came across as a good, but not great HC with Allen putting team on his back. Still way better than Bowles

  40. Bojim Says:

    Thats really surprising.

  41. heyjude Says:

Patrick – I grew up in NY in a family that lived, ate, and breathed football and the Bills. Respectfully, it was time for a change and McDermott to be let go. He will be a coach somewhere else. Change can be good.

  42. Ugotrobbed Says:

Glazers are as incompetent as there HC! Fans are way down on the list of things that matter to them…I think!

  43. FormerBucFan Says:

Top to bottom…left to right…back to front…side to side this organization sucks!!!!!

  44. Coburn Says:

Actually also a bit like Dungy when he couldn’t get Bucs over the hump

  45. Warrenfb12 Says:

Just shows a clear lack of accountability at One Buc right now, top to bottom. Better coaches have been launched for much less. Bowles remains. He has to have something on these owners around the NFL. It’s not very often that a guy with a clear long history of losing gets to continue to be a head coach. Or maybe it’s Goodell? Glazers are taking their turn biting the bullet.

  46. Rocket10 Says:

Very curious why they stick with Bowles unless tanking for a QB and Bowles is in on it and kicked upstairs after next season. Hate conspiracy theories but keeping Bowles makes no sense

  47. QBKilla Says:

    Dumb

  48. TheVerv7 Says:

Bowles must have photos of the Glazers hanging out with Epstein because how in the world is a 12-5 coach getting the boot but yet Bowles gets to keep his job?

  49. Vanessa Anne Says:

Joe, you’re right. It won’t affect Todd Bowles status as HC.

The tragic poignancy of situation is that it should.

Harbough, McDaniels, Tomlin, and now McDermott.

What do the Ravens, Dolphins, Steelers and Bills know that we don’t?

The message is clear. The Glazers are ok with the mediocrity Bowles brings to the table.

Much to the chagrin of a fan base that knows the team could be much
    better…

  50. bucnjim Says:

Being a Bucs fan for as long as I have you see trends in what they like to do as far as coaching. If this team (talent wise) isn’t Super Bowl ready, then they settle for coaches instead of going after the best available. The Bucs Defense is nowhere close to being SB ready so it looks like they are holding steady until we can draft some more talent on that side of the ball.

On a positive note, the Bucs are now out of salary cap hell and could make some moves pretty quickly.

  51. Daryl Green Says:

This makes it hard to be Fan of this team.
I have be around since ‘96 this is tuff and watch the gm mess up the draft
Watch. Don’t hear about ‘76 blah blah. This is a unique situation with good coaches and Franchise made. Is this family watching the games? Seriously.
Have they any press conference about their decision.

  52. Ricky Says:

If they plan on changin the HC, why not grtting McDaniels as HC. He is the best option.

  53. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Apparently the Glazers, despite an array of good coaches available, want to make sure us fans are screwed for years to come.

  54. Fanofdabucs Says:

If you arent going to fire Bowles, at least force him to hire a DC. I find it hard to believe the Glazers aren’t bright people. Having not hired a OC yet and not forcing Bowles to hire a DC, gives me hope that there may be a bigger plan in the works. Something is off and smells fishy.

  55. Bosch Says:

“Joe hopes Bowles looks closely at McDermott’s staff for defensive assistant openings.“

Bosch hopes it is Buccaneers newly hired HC Mike McDaniels and his selected DC doing the looking.

  56. wlliam Says:

buffalo cares about its fans/ glazers do NOT

  57. TB Dork Says:

Looks like those of you insane enough to go to next years’s home games are going to be able to park much closer to the stadium. LOL

  58. Ash Says:

If they were goi g to make him hire a Dc what’s the point in keeping bowels in the first place he hasnt been making good in game decisions his clock management has been awful even with the new hires specifically hired for that they have no intentions of hiring a DC while keeping Todd.

  59. Buddha Says:

Weak Decision. Overhyped quarterback who is not. Clutch. The salary cap kills teams with all world QBs Look at who is left, either young or very old.

  60. Jor Jor Binks Says:

Wonder if Harbaugh is wishing he had waited a week and have Josh Allen as his QB instead of Dart at this point in his coaching career, allthewhilst still residing in New York

  61. Dale W Says:

I was really hoping engaged and excited when I first watched the “Raise the Flags” documentary, but now it is starting to piss me off. You launch Dungy, Gruden because you no longer trout they could get you to a championship, but yet you are choosing to keep the mediocrity that is Todd Bowles. You claimed in the series that you listen to the fans, and then ignore them when they are pointing out the obvious the Bowles needs to be launched. At least come out and explain your choices Glazers.

  62. BucsFan81 Says:

This was the worst year to keep toilet Bowles. Sorry it is what it is out of every coach that got fired Bowles is the worst out of all of them and he kept his job. Make it make sense!!!! He lost 7 out of 9 games down the stretch.

  63. BA’s Red Pen Says:

We’re stuck with Bowles. I have no hope for next season already, and this one is not even over yet. It’s so hopeless I’m considering changing my name to Dejected Bucs Fan.

  64. Guinness8 Says:

I think the Glazers knew there was going to be a lot of head coach turnover this year and did not want to compete. They would have had to settle for a less than desirable coach. They decided to wait until next year.

  65. BucsFan81 Says:

Fans are not going to let this go with Bowles. When the losing starts the bill boards will go up in Tampa. The bags on the heads with Yucs written on it will come out. Owner malpractice with this team. I can’t wait for week 1 so Bowles gets booed out the building.

  66. MelvinJunior Says:

Wonder if Tomlin would consider it with Josh Allen!? You’re not getting much better than that, and a brand new stadium, new energy, Etc. But, it appears they already know who their next coach will be. Kind of the point of the firing. Josh’s ex OC!?

  67. Beeej Says:

Bills have no wide receivers and no pass rush, but they fire the coach

  68. Ron Mexico Says:

“One could argue the Bills got robbed this weekend by a horrendous NFL catch/non-catch rule,”

Almost the exact same happened to us last year with Jalen McMillan against the Cowgirls, if I remember correctly. At least they are consistent.

  69. heyjude Says:

Beeej – Josh didn’t seem to have a lot of protection either. I think the owners were right about firing McDermott, but they should have fired the GM Beane too. But I guess he is saved, which makes no sense. I felt sorry for Josh after the game, but he wasn’t playing well either.

  70. FormerBucFan Says:

There’s contenders and pretenders I believe most knowledgeable fans know where this franchise lies. Not firing Todd Bowles defies all logical thinking. Hiring Sean McDermott would be like the Chiefs hiring Andy Reid when Philly tossed him. The man won 98 games in 9 years and 8 more playoff games. There is no argument to make for keeping Todd around…he’s seen collapses in 3 straight seasons topped off with this years 2-7 finish. Why wasn’t Todd told to hire a defensive coordinator? What gives with this franchise. I’ll say it now…you can bet $199 to a donut that wherever Sean ends up he will be vastly more successful than Todd.

  71. heyjude Says:

Guinness8 Says: “I think the Glazers knew there was going to be a lot of head coach turnover this year and did not want to compete.”

You could be right on that. It’s like a merry-go-around. And the season isn’t over.

  72. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Dale W Says: “At least come out and explain your choices Glazers.”

Yeah, exactly! Have they even said a single WORD, or are they still hiding!? I haven’t been paying a whole lot of attention. I know old Art in ATL was out front of HIS FANS at least, with that letter! You’d THINK being an “Owner,” that you’d be STRONG in your convictions, and would be out front and EXPLAINING WHY. I mean, you’d THINK that’d be the very least you could do. But, THEY DON’T. They’re flogging COWARDS. Have we even heard much of anything out of JL yet, taking ANY amount of responsibility, or WHAT!? Or, is HE still hiding and just putting it ALL ON The Grizz!? Real funny how HE’s always out front and center, when everything is looking GOOD (continuously bragging on HIMSELF, with a big-ole smile)
WHERE THEY AT NOW!? The season is still going on.

  73. MerryPlankster777 Says:

All these strong coaches getting fired and bucs keep an absolute stinker for our uncle Fester collectable collection.

  74. MelvinJunior Says:

And, nobody’s wanting or needing to hear EXCUSES. We want and need (actually deserve, especially after LOSING Coen) to hear the reasons for WHY Lickt AND Bowles BOTH, were retained. What are the reasons for WHY THEY are so confident in THEM and WHY it was the only obvious decision and move to make!? And, what kind of “guarantees” THEY are willing to put on the line, in order for the FANS to have confidence in THEM again!? Cause, newsflash to them, if they haven’t already figured it out yet, for themselves
 But the FANS haven’t ANY.

  75. MelvinJunior Says:

@ FormerBucFan Says: “Why wasn’t Todd told to hire a defensive coordinator?”

It’s inexcusable. Absurd. It’s WEAK AF. I mean, YOU’D THINK they would’ve had MAJOR leverage in their post-season meetings, right!? Which it all appears to be just MORE SMOKE. All a JOKE. The decision to retain them BOTH, was already made and set in stone even, BEFORE their “meeting.” They didn’t want to have to ‘PAY-UP’ to can Bowles (and JL), AND rehire and PAY for their replacements. It’s a LAZY, CHEAP, WEAK, and incompetent franchise now. So, looks like we are going to be STUCK with THIS for a loooong while. Might as well get used to it!

  76. FormerBucFan Says:

Stand and cheer your Dollar General buccaneers

  77. Anyhony Says:

And the Glazers have two trophies in their lobby and the Bills have none!!!

  78. Tye Says:

Bills – a team that wants to win it all!
Bucs – would rather lose this a buddy who is a sorry HC than win with anyone else…

  79. Told You Says:

Some owners have high standards, not Bryan “Hugh” Glazerhouse

  80. buc4evr Says:

Feel sorry for the guy. All because the refs called an INT that clearly was not. Then a PI that was not. Bills got jobbed by the Refs and McDerrmott gets canned.
I am convinced the Refs are fixing games.

  81. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Quit hating on the Glazers. They are great owners.

  82. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Sean McDermott is a defensive head coach. Yes, we’d have a great season record, but would still not be successful in the playoffs.

  83. It's Corn Says:

Until the Bucs sign a new hire, the door is still open to can Lying Todd Bowles.

  84. DoooshLaRue Says:

Man, if he were a blak coach we’d be having a different conversation wouldn’t we Ryan Clark?

  85. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

    Super Bowls since 2000:

    Bills 0-0
    Bucs 2-0
    .

  86. Chuckys Bucs Says:

The Bills will do what the Bucs should have. Joe Brady like Liam Coen was, is a potential HC candidate. The Bills may be choosing to retain the young OC by promoting to HC.

  87. Usfbucs Says:

I agree with some others here. The fact that Licht and the Glazers have not made a public statement about Bowles says they might still be open to a new HC.

  88. Eric Says:

The bills have lost their minds.

  89. FormerBucFan Says:

    Super Bowls since 2000:

    Bills 0-0
    Bucs 2-0

Win loss records last 9 years

    Bills 98-50
    Bucs 76-72

One Superbowl win for bucs but that was a Brady rental

  90. FamousMabus Says:

Bucs stand 0 chance next year unless they see this as an opportunity to upgrade and take. Stefanski to the Falcons means they probably win the division I’m not that worried about the panthers but the saints were playing pretty hard with the bottom of their roster late in the year. Bucs are going to be playing for a top 10 pick next year.

  91. Patrick Says:

The fans are not going to let this one go. If Harbaugh, Tomlin, and McDerrmott hadn’t hit the market, maybe it would’ve quieted down a little.

It’s disrespectful af that the Glazers haven’t said anything since the season ended, when they were so outspoken for once on the Raise the Flags documentary. They know the fans are irritated.

It’s unusual as well that they themselves haven’t even confirmed Bowles job security. Only the likes of Rick Stroud and Adam Schefter have

  92. FormerBucFan Says:

The closest we were to a dynasty was the Dungy years and he was fired. Todd’s not a dynasty he’s a travesty

  93. john Says:

    ok now fire bowels.

  94. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Bring McDermott here to run the Defense in 2026 and take over in 2027 as HC and bring Josh Allen here to replace Baker. Too late for Christmas wish??? just asking.

  95. Confido75 Says:

Go and get Sean M. This is your chance, Glazers!

  96. Mobucs Says:

Disney has conquered! The NFL has become a cartoon. Not about competition or competence, but about vacuous diversion. Just grab the eyeballs. If you’re in the playoffs, the games are the diversion, complete with lots of noise and moving parts, and surprisingly creative application of rules. Keeps people’s attention between commercials. Soon as you’re out of the competition, fire somebody with a big title to make headlines and screen crawl material. The firings are all about getting publicity and not much about the competence of the people. We know this because as soon as one team fires a coach, he is coveted by half dozen other teams, and his new team’s fans are ecstatic to have him. The NFL is about money and celebrity; getting either of them isn’t really dependent on winning. And it’s a closed shop. All the candidates for open positions are already members of the club. If you’re a member, whether you win or lose, they’ll find a place for you as long as you give good interviews or look good on halftime shows.

  97. adam from ny Says:

it’s musical chairs in the nfl

  98. BucsOwnersLoveMediocrity Says:

And yet Bowles is still here. All these people who wanted us to keep Bowles due to lack of HC candidates this year can F off. There’s been so many better choices than Bowles lmao. Glazers are trash and love being mediocre all because the team used to suck worse. Such a loser mentality this ownership has

  99. Mike Johnson Says:

You see Buc Fans, The Buffalo Bills have that Burning Desire to be great. And they will stop at nothing. They will continue to search for that coach to get them over the hump Not us. We love 8-9 or lower. YOU GOTTA WANNA BE GREAT. And the Glazers are satisfied with their profits.

  100. Ugo Says:

Tell me again why the Bucs keeping Bowles doesn’t show a complacency to tolerate a mediocre Head Coach. McDermott got fired because he was wasting his talent and he is twice the coach Todd is

  101. mj Says:

who do the bills have besides josh allen? c’mon hope they have a gruden waiting in the wings that can get them over, dude was a great coach
they lost bc denver had more talent esp on defense
josh plays slightly better and they win, the coach didn’t hilariously fumble the bread loaf!! ridiculous!! but yeah he’sa better coach than tb
