The Question Is, “Why?”

January 14th, 2026

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

Joe is pretty confident the Bucs know exactly why. So what are they going to do about it?

There are all sorts of things to point to that went wrong for the Bucs, specifically after the bye. As always in football, none are more important than the quarterback.

There was the good Baker Mayfield and the bad Baker Mayfield.

Good Baker dominated the first part of the season, before the bye. In close games, Good Baker put the Bucs on his back, running for key first downs that also loosened up defenses for Good Baker then took advantage.

Good Baker looked like he was a league MVP for making clutch play after clutch play, with his legs and arm, leading the Bucs to a 6-2 record.

Then after the bye, Bad Baker showed up throwing nearly as many picks as he did touchdowns. Too many of those picks came in the fourth quarter, which doomed the Bucs, as pointed out by Jenna Laine of ESPN.

Before their Week 9 bye, he had thrown 13 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He threw 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions after the week off.

Mayfield battled injuries to both shoulders and had issues in his right bicep and knee — on top of a hand issue in training camp. [Todd] Bowles said he did not believe injuries played a role in Mayfield’s regression, and that he doesn’t think any of Mayfield’s injuries will result in offseason surgery.

Joe doesn’t buy it. Mayfield had a myriad of injuries. If Mayfield’s injuries were not a factor in the team circling the drain, then that means recently fired Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard was incapable of making adjustments.

That may have played a part. But Joe is of the belief injuries to Mayfield turned him from Good Baker to Bad Baker.

And if Mayfield was that hurt, Joe would still like to know why then was he still on the field and not shelved to get him healthy. A banged-up Mayfield trying to fight through injuries did no one any good, specifically Mayfield himself.

  1. Alanbucsfan Says:

    The backup Guards were inadequate
    Mayfield had injuries
    Starting Receivers were injured
    Irving was injured
Grizzard was incapable at this point to make adjustments
When the Offense only scores 20 points/game the last 9 games and the Defense is giving up almost 26 points/game in the same stretch – you’re going to lose most of the time.
Bucs lost this season mainly because the OLine and Dlines were getting beat.

  2. Optimistic Says:

Bowles couldn’t sit Baker for a game or 2 to recover because Bowles made the decision to cut Trask leaving the Bucs without a credible backup QB.

  3. Lefty R Says:

Well, first the Defense always stunk , all year long, even when they won!
Todd Bowles never …… ever made any adjustments
Then Bowles threw everyone under the bus

And now here we are and Bowles is still here!!!

Plus, the Bucs are no closer to hiring any coaches to fulfill the open positions!

Really, the Bucs need to figure out what kind of team they have and what they need to do to improve and the hire coaches that will get that done

Right now, I don’t think they have a clue!!!

  4. Warrenfb12 Says:

I think we have seen what mayfield looks like when he is battling through injuries. This sounds silly but prioritizing a competent backup in the offseason is important.

  5. heyjude Says:

Absolutely agree, and good article too.

We should have had a solid backup for Baker. Teddy was on the injury list, I think twice, and once was for teeth. Kyle wasn’t the answer for years. After the bye, something else happened too. Maybe discontent within the locker room, unsure. We need a good backup for Baker next season. No more, let’s see what happens and bringing in ones that can’t play successfully if he is out.

  6. SB~LV šŸˆ Says:

If the Atlanta Falcons can make ( great ownership and leadership)
Make Matt Ryan President of Football Operations
Why can’t or don’t the Bucs do the same with Ronde Barber and free the Glazers from these type of situations where they have a long history of ineptitude.
They did manage to wrangle 2 Lombardi Trophy Rentals

  7. Fanofdabucs Says:

Surprise! This falls on the HC. Look at how the 49er HC handled Purdy. He gave him plenty of time get healthy and despite even more injuries than the Bucs, managed to keep his team winning ball games

I really hope it was injuries and the Baker we saw in the 2nd half of the season wasn’t just more of the inconsistent Baker folks have witnessed most of his career.

But does it really matter? Does anything about this team really matter as long as Todd is still the head coach?

  8. Tim Says:

He had injuries to his hand, bicep AND his shoulder(s) and it didn’t play a part in his regression? How could it not play a part?

  9. Wilder32 Says:

Almost this exact same scenario played out for Mayfield in his final season in Cleveland and they ran him out of town because of it.

  10. Beeej Says:

Would be awesome if we could get Jameis back, if only for the one-liners at his interviews.

About Baker –I don’t see the reason for this continued vagueness from Todd about his injuries–the season’s over (unless he’s afraid of getting in trouble with the league for lying on the injury reports)

  11. RVATom Says:

Clear as day. Baker became one dimensional. I love the guy. But if he isn’t a multifaceted threat he loses his ability to impact games. Hes a great dude, great leader, not a pure pocket passer.

I guess if he had an iron curtain in front of him and didn’t get happy feet so soon that might change things. Seems similar to Brady once you saw in his eyes he had mentally checked out, the feet got happier and the throws were forced, didn’t seem to be getting through his reads and back again.

Baker is certainly not mentally checked out. But he either got gun shy about getting hit or he didn’t have confidence his body could take a big splash. His brain wasn’t willing to write the checks his body was going to have to cash. Even his last few scrambles against Carolina looked a little half hearted. In earlier games guys would get a paw on him and Baker was twisting, juking, squeaking away. The last game? He just went down when a paw grabbed him.

  12. Cardiac kidz Says:

Poor play from both the guard positions. It killed the run and passing game. We placed a coach in the role of OC that he wasn’t ready or qualified for.

You don’t need to look any further .

  13. JohnQCitizen Says:

If shaker throws an interception, don’t assume it’s always his fault. Coaching and boredom is the problem, not Baker. Who played harder?

  14. Razorramone Says:

When did the Falcons ever equate great owner and leadership? How many rings? How many coaches? 28-3? Penix/Cousins debacle? Is it because Blank comes down every fourth quarter and looks, well, blank? We’ll see how Matt Ryan handles the entire operation. Seems like a hail Mary to me. Go Bucs.

  15. Davenport Says:

    Injuries didnt affect the defense.
Injuries didnt affect the special teams.
    Both were bad all year

    We won without Evans
    We won without Godwin
We won without both of them

    Coaching lost us the season
Coaching lost us the locker room

Change what you want, the core problem remains – and he’s still the HC

  16. Knothead71 Says:

I’m not going to type out the career stats for Mayfield because I’m on my phone and it’s a pain in the butt.
I strongly encourage all of ya’ll to look for yourselves. This year he passed for 3693 yards with 26 TDs and 11 INTs. If you take out his first two years with the Bucs this was pretty much the numbers he has put up over his NFL career. In other words he regressed to his normal average.
Blame it on injuries, the OC, the HC or the (admittedly) soft defense or whatever you want but the numbers don’t lie.
60 wins to 63 losses over his career. Baker Mayfield is what his record says he is.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I saw 2?interceptions from Otton where he lost the ball & another 2 where WRs quit on routes….another was a Hail Mary at the end of a half….so, yes some were not Baker’s fault.

  18. ChiBuc Says:

I agree that it is Bo2les responsibility to manage his QB throughout the season. However, shouldn’t the offensive minded GM be responsible to provide a viable backup for his defensive minded GM? But why would anyone hold Licht responsible, after all he did have Wirfs, BA, and Brady fall into lap so he’s untouchable.

  19. ChiBuc Says:

    *defensive minded HC

  20. Hail2dabucs Says:

I do not believe they are capable on figuring out what they need & actually putting it together on the field . Sure , the GM can put the ingredients on the counter , I have no faith in this coaching staff to get it rolling . Oh wait , what coaching staff ? Oh yeah we only have the guy that threw everyone under the pirate ship & he is the only one left aboard! Fix your stupidly confusing bad defense Todd . Get young guys who are fast & will fly to the ball & gang tackle in a simple defense & I can assure you they won’t make any more mistakes than your bums you have been trotting out . Quit getting out coached!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Of course it was the injuries. And it’s clear they were terrified to play Bridgewater. One wonders why he was even on the roster. Licht really screwed up parts of the roster this past season.

  22. HeavyE Says:

Enough with the Excuses. Already……How many more are there???

  23. MadMax Says:

    3rd and 28. All Bakers fault….

We were actually a 4 win team if it hadnt been for those last 60 second comebacks that he engineered almost on his own. Todds D is where the spotlight is for this seasons failure

  24. Okiejim Says:

Beeej Says, you may have found the elephant in the room on Baker’s injuries! The NFL was investigating the NYG’s and their handling/playing QB with injuries. Do not know league rules or procedures but punishments fines, suspension or loss of draft picks come to mind.

  25. Bucsfan2023 Says:

Joe, you left out the oblique injury that affected him for several games in the middle of the season. As others have stated why was he playing if he was hurt? The answer is they had no one else they could put on the field. Teddy is terrible and almost killed our receiver. Is that really the best the team could come up with for a backup quarterback?
No excuses, just facts for the Baker haters.

  26. Allen Lofton Says:

When Baker Mayfield played through injuries he was the bad Baker. Previous seasons confirm this, it was obvious simply by watching his poor performance.

Much of the blame is on Todd Bowles for continuing to play him over a healthy backup quarterback.

Had Bowles rested him 3 games after the bye week, that’s 4 weeks to heal and get the Bucs into the playoffs.

If Mayfield pushed back against Bowles, he is the coach and needed to save Mayfield against himself.

Hopefully Bowles improves but his past decisions paint a disastrous pattern.

  27. capebuc Says:

Enough now. You guys are making this too complicated. There is no mystery. And there’s no ā€˜bye’. The delineator is the Detroit game, specifically when Mike Evans went down. Defenses had one trick, to shut out Egbuka. It worked. And Grizz had no answers. Our offense went through Mike. The new OC will no doubt install a more varied scheme and we’ll be able to attack in different ways.

  28. Bosch Says:

It is bad enough that Bowels lies as much as he does. In his arrogance, he doesn’t think the press and fans are worthy of the truth. But this was an unnecessary lie. What was gained from it?

  29. SB~LV šŸˆ Says:

I am in Baker’s camp but he will be turning 31 I believe next season.
We have ZERO starting caliber Quarterback in the wings.
When and how high will the Bucs address this NEED?

  30. Outrigger Says:

I believe it was combination of Baker’s injuries and most importantly, Grizzard’s incompetence as an OC. Todd chose Grizz over Scheelhause to be our OC last year. What makes you believe Todd is going to get it right this season. Also we probably had the worst backup quarterback in the league last season so we couldn’t rest Baker. A big priority this season is to get a competent backup. I hate to burst your bubble Gator fans, Trask was not a competent backup either.

  31. PSL Bob Says:

We can only hope that the good Baker Mayfield is ready to role when next season roles around.

  32. Choon Says:

Someone should have the balls to tell baker to sit a game or 2 out if he is so injured it effects his play that badly. baker wont do it himself, that kind of thing should be the responsibility of the head coach, but bowles likes his “players hold eachother accountable” philosophy which seems to be the downfall of the locker room imo.

  33. Deeboooo Says:

Bakers play was pretty spot on with his career averages. I think we’re seeing who baker is at this point. Streaky, with hot and cold spells that average out.

I believe the key to unlocking Baker is to keep the ball out of his hands the majority of the game, which requires a strong run game. Glimpses of it last year with Bucky, but we need a run identity.

  34. Bee Says:

    Sigh…more and more excuses.

It will be very interesting to see how many people on this site pivot when Baker plays the exact same way this upcoming season. As myself and many others have stated Baker plays the same healthy and injured. The way Baker played at the beginning of the season is the outlier. If it wasn’t we would’ve seen that type of play IN THE PLAYOFFS the 2 seasons before.

The way Baker played in the DET playoff game and the WAS playoff game was similar to how he played down the stretch during the 2-7 slide. Off-target throws and 4th quarter turnovers. Was he injured then as well? I dont remember hearing that.

Baker is a rollercoaster, he always has been and always will be. Every season he has a streak of terrible play. He’s been that way for every OC hes had. So post any stat you want but stats dont win games.

You can’t build around a 30+ year old injury prone QB. Thats not a great way to build long term success. The Bucs need to get younger and more talented at HC and at QB. Expecting Bowles and Baker to get different results is a waste of time. Its the same song and dance from both of them season after season.

Notice they results they had with their former teams they brought with them to the Bucs. With their leadership the top 10 pick is within reach.

  35. Popmike66 Says:

Joe, I agree to some point about Mayfield and injuries, however I do think it was more. It clearly looked like something else was going on, like bad play calling and Grizzard not making adjustments and when I hear a player say, it seems like I am out there by myself , hummmm. Nonetheless, thats just my opinion and opinions are like rear ends, everybody has one

  36. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

If Baker was really that bad, then why wouldn’t you have our backup qb start. Oh, maybe because he’s not interested in playing football. Hes literally only doing it for the money. Great job front office on that stellar FA signing.

  37. ModHairKen Says:

It’s absurd to think that everyone is the problem but Bowles.

He’s a nice man, but he could not motivate.

And his defensive scheme is just stupid. It does not work.

Licht has built a team with too many nice guys who have low testosterone.

All they are doing right now with all the coaching changes is rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic.

What good assistant coach would come here, knowing that this is the last season for Bowles.

    We all know it.

  38. Eckwood Says:

    Optimistic nailed it !!
listen, Teddy can throw a couple balls as good as anybody. However Bowles cutting Trask and bringing Bridgewater last minute is laughable. He literally is as fragile as a thin pain of glass and can barely run . This again just speaks volumes to Todd’s assessment capabilities. You’ve had two years and a whole off-season to assess your backup quarterback room. The whole thing is covered with red noses and oversize shoes. Does anyone have a big tent they can ship to Todd?

  39. bucnjim Says:

The offensive line usually dictates how smooth the offense runs!! Ours had two third string guards and major injuries to the rest. Not sticking up for Mayfield because he did have his share of mistakes, but you can’t have a discussion about QB play without bringing up the O-line.

  40. Fred McNeil Says:

Well, what I want to know is why we didn’t sign another QB when it was quite apparent that Bilgewater was unable to bail out our sinking ship? Did Bowlzo tell Licht ltat we didn’t need a QB or was it Licht himself? Who the heck thought to sign that washout in the first place?

  41. 813bucboi Says:

    I agree with @Knothead71

    Baker is NOT THAT MAN!!!!

Baker lead the league in INTs & Fumbles in 2024 and folks made every excuse there was for him including the injury excuse….

now joe is trying to dig up every bump and bruise baker had to justify his trash play lol….

9 INTs in the 2nd half of the season tell me Baker doesnt have it between the ears….it aint injuries..baker aint it!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  42. 813bucboi Says:

even if the defense played average, that doesnt solve Bakers 4th quarter INT problem!!!!

people love to bring up 3rd&28 but never want to mention Baker throwing the INT earlier in the 4th…

    the question is, WHY?

    GO BUCS!!!

  43. FortMyersDave Says:

Bowles will not admit Baker was hurt because that would give a very plausible reason to question why Bowles really launched Grizzard. Grizz was a scapegoat that was forced to modify his offense to help keepTodd’s putrid D off of the field. Vs Carolina in the final game, I think Grizzard was forced to go for a FG before the half and run all the time off of the clock so Bowles D would not give up a TD in 30 seconds…..

  44. BucU Says:

Until Todd Bowles is fired everything else surrounding this team is white noise.
We’re behind the 8 ball before we even take the field every game knowing we will be outcoached. It’s disgusting that this guy is not only HC still but the Glazers didn’t even have the balls to make him give up DC. They’re straight up cowards.

  45. Canabuc Says:

    @813bucboi.

I agree with Penny aspects of what is said in that makers play the second half of the season in particular was disappointing. It is easy to play the guessing game as to how much of it was due to injury how much was due to him being an inconsistent quarterback…

However if you actually look at the interceptions themselves you realize that he realistically had only four or five of those nine interceptions actually be on him.
I can count two of them that went to Cade Otton but either clanged off his hands into a defender or that the defender ripped out of his hands. I can count one that was a hail Mary before halftime that was intercepted that really had no impact at all in the game for which I have seen Tom Brady do very similar multiple times. Just taking those away and you would be down to six interceptions and a season long of 26 touchdowns with 8 interceptions a 3 and 1/2 to 1 ratio which would be considered very good!

My own personal opinion is the Baker is not elite, but when healthy and with an offensive line that is not down at least two of its starters at any given time he is better than what we saw the second half of the year. If we had a competent defense to go with that we could survive the occasional interception. Just look at how Seattle did with some multiple interception games by Sam darnold that they still won because the rest of the defense and the offense could overcome a turnover. The margin of error for us was so narrow because Todd’s defense gives up points like a pedophile gives out candy to kids.

  46. Zoocomics Says:

@RVATom …you put it perfect, and it’s accurate depiction without being a apologist.

Let me add that Baker is simply overrated. Sure, we got a snap shot of his ability to thrive in a dink and dunk offense, which didn’t ask a whole lot from him as far as the degree of difficulty in throwing the football, not to mention the assist of a solid running game. AND yes, his ability to escape contain and get extra yards with his legs, is huge x-factor allowing the offense to stay on the field. And yet, he still managed to be tied with the most INTs in 2024.

If Baker was playing that hurt, he is a detriment to not only the offense, the team, and himself. This idea that when Baker craps the bed is always due to an injury is getting old. There isn’t one coach that’s forcing him to play. He thinks he’s a hero and that he’s better at 70% than a 100% healthy backup. That’s not reality, and if it is, we need to find ourselves a better backup. Baker lacks the physical tangibles that would allow him to compensate for being banged up. Josh Allen is a great example of someone that is still a better option at 70% than Mitchell Tribusky at 100%. That simply isn’t Baker.

  47. Been there since the beginning Says:

Maybe Griz got lost in the storm, so to say, and answer me this, was there anyone to bail him out ?? So he called things the best he could when everything went bad. No More First Time play callers for a while.. Monken would be nice and I bet he learned some AFC tricks in Baltimore.

  48. HC Grover Says:

He had no back up. Moonball is an auto lost game.

  49. HeavyE Says:

    @813, Thank You!!! Let’s Go Bucs…..

  50. Stpetematt Says:

Baker still has 10 years+ of great plays in his future if he is protected.

    PROTECT HIM.

  51. BakerFan Says:

It was just not Baker injuries, that whole line was banged up and under performed, The Receiver Corp were banged up for most of the year, Bucky Irving missed 1st half of season. A total disaster and Bucs were fortunate to be 6-2 beating playoff teams.

When you have an injured QB, there is usually a rally around him to keep him clean. This team did not have the players to do that.

  52. Knothead71 Says:

    @Stpetematt
He doesn’t have 9 years of great play behind him! He has maybe 2 years of better than average play behind him, his first two with the Bucs. Every other year he is average at best.
What on Earth would make you think that at 30 years old and 9 years into his career he will suddenly convert to a great QB?
Can you win with Mayfield under center? Sure, but everything else has to be just right.
If/when he tries to put the team on his back he throws a INT.
There are 9 years of tape and stats that back this up.

  53. Buckit Says:

Bucs might want to consider giving Garrett Greene a shot at a backup QB spot.

There is not one quarterback in the NFL that could have made this team a Superbowl contender. You an deny the injuries to the offensive line that quite frankly couldn’t even block well enough to get 1 yard with four tries (many times they failed at getting one yard). You deny the injuries to the wide receivers (for a while Shepard was our #1 receiver). It’s pure lunacy to blame one player.

So, we didn’t make the playoffs. Todd did that. 3rd down and 28 and his putrid defense didn’t even come close to stopping the Falcons.

  55. Ash Says:

If bowels says the sun is up im going out to see because it probably midnight I don’t pay attention to what Todd says at this point it’s all word vomit.

  56. MerryPlankster777 Says:

Question is Why? – but that is incomplete as stated.

    The full questions is:

    “Why is Todd STILL here?”

Answer can’t just be that he is too expensive and ineffectual to fire. That is not good enough.

  57. heyjude Says:

Stpetematt – Agree about the protection around Baker. He shouldn’t have to scramble and slide so much. He is fun to watch while clenching my teeth that he doesn’t get slammed down and badly injured.

Havent’ seen Kenton, Vanessa, orlbuc, and stpetebucs fan for awhile. Hope they are okay 😊

  58. AlstottNumber1 Says:

Bowles hand picked backup QB was Bilgewater.

And he has no business on an NFL roster as witnessed in the Rams game.

That alone should get Bowles run out of Tampa.

Now, the whole Trask fiasco is 100% on Licht.

He is an empty suit when evaluating and picking QBs in the draft.

The results are in. Licht + Bowles = Epic failure

  59. Aqualung Says:

The one large, overfed, overdeployed human who is to blame for all that is still in his dual position for the Bucs, and until that changes, expect worse.

  60. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Baker good with Canales, Great with Coen, Shakey with Grizzz,,, seems like Bake will be as good as the OC ,,, great OC means great, bad OC means struggles so the Bucs need to hire a great one (they are out there )

  61. D-Rome Says:

I bet the under on TD passes thrown by Baker before the season and I won.

  62. Jack Hammer Says:

Very few people thought those first few games they were winning in that way was ever going to be sustainable for throughout an entire season.

  63. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

We need more talent at the back up QB position.

    Taylen Green

    Haynes King

    Jack Strand

No way we go into the 2026 season with 2 backup like Bridgewater & Bazelak again. We need a contingency plan and/or a plan B, especially if Baker ā€œregressesā€ into the QB he’s been his whole career.

  64. BuccaDAWG Says:

I’ve not seen anything like this. The starters come back healthy & the offense is worse. The team QUIT on Bowles & the coaches face it. I hope the Glaziers & or their Rock Star GM have a plan going forward other than Bowles has earned the HC job cause we won the weakest division in the NFL 3 yrs running .Sure doesnt look like it though. Maybe Tomlin takes a year off to rejuvenate & takes the reigns next season. Maybe all the qualified Coaches for this dumpster fire are still working who knows . I really haven’t seen any candidates that thrilled me but what do I know? As for Mayfield , hes a WORRIER & really one of the only players that showed character & guts down tbe tubes. Again him playing without a rest shows how inept our offensive coaching staff is or was Bowels especially. But he deserves to be our coach cause the Glaziers know Biuc Fans really love undercachivi g overpaid loafers that don’t practice with any fire or physicality . I wasn’t a big Trask fan but a washed up ex- high school coach who’s buddies with.out entitled HC & if ya’ll remember almost cost.one of our top WRs his career in preseason while proving he wasn’t the answer at #2 Qb. Well I hope im wrong but I gotta a feeling we may be in position to get that high ranked Young QB of the future in 26. But look who gets to pick him. That’S my soap box rant i’m still a BUCS FAN always have been & always will be i just don’t have alot of faith in the current.leadership. Anyway GOOOOO BUCCANEERS!!!!!!

  65. Mike Johnson Says:

Baker was banged up the 2nd half of the season because he tried, he knew, he had to do it all. He had zero help from his sorry Defense. And yes, Grizzard was a scapegoat. Bowles shoul;d have been fired instead. Just remember, it was 3rd and 28 and our defense could not get off the field.

  66. Okiejim Says:

To protect the those in control of the Bucs, Baker’s injuries will never be made public! So, those who make assumptions either pro or con are just venting their personal opinions which helps them explain why or why not bad Baker played the last 9 games !

  67. unbelievable Says:

And if Mayfield was that hurt, Joe would still like to know why then was he still on the field and not shelved to get him healthy.

You know exactly why Joe. Because they enlisted an out of shape high school football coach to be our only backup QB.

Another moronic decision by the leaders at One Buc.

  68. Wyoming Joe Says:

Bee: You said: ā€œAs myself and many others have stated Baker plays the same healthy and injured.ā€ I beg you to seek psychological help as soon as possible, or start doing standup comedy.

  69. Stetematt Says:

I was knocked out of the fantasy playoffs by Kyle Pitts when he played the Bucs. I would have won the championship for a couple grand had the team adjusted and started double covering him seeing as how the Falcons WR1 (London) was out of the game. Why did they not adjust? Why was Pitts running free constantly? Someone was not playing their position correctly. My guess is McCollum or Dean since they both got benched for ā€œinjuriesā€ at the end of the year. But too late for me! So I’m really angry about that, but what can you do? Bowles is a good coach. We just didn’t have the players with capability to cover him- especially with our ultra slow linebackers! I read a scouting report on the Bucs D somewhere that repeatedly mentioned our slow linebackers as a major weakness on the team.

    Definitely needs addressed.

  70. JA Says:

Good coach sits his QB when injured.
Bad coach lets QB dictate his playing time, leaving him in games when he becomes a detriment to the team’s performance and costing wins.
Congrats Glazers, you chose to overlook this and numerous other shortcomings to keep what some consider to be the amongst the worst coach’s in the league.
If you’re trying to prove a point, Herr Ownership, please reveal the point you’re attempting to make.
    Look around the league …
Johnson turned the Bears around and found the best in Caleb Williams.
Vrabel turned the Pats around and found the best in Drake Maye.
Bowles turned the Bucs upside down and found the worst in everyone.

  71. AlstottNumber1 Says:

    @Wyoming Joe

Bee is correct in his assessment of Baker.

Just look at the overall record and it speaks for itself.

If the Bucs had a 2002 like defense then Baker is the type that can get to the playoffs.

But he’s never going to be the guy to get us a third SB title.

  72. 941bucsfan Says:

Lol ā€œinjuries are no excuseā€ā€¦. Except when it comes to Baker ā€œlamar jacksonā€ Mayfield

  73. Oneilbuc Says:

In today’s football quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield don’t win Superbowls because you can’t play defense like they did in the early 2000s .

  74. Tom Petty Says:

I’m Baker fan but the lengths you guys go to in order to defend him and the offense are ridiculous.

Bakers biggest issues this year were NOT the relatively minor injuries. They were mental

  75. Bucblind II Says:

The more bee talks the more you know he knows nothing about the game of football.

  76. Bucblind II Says:

813, first off we can always depend on you to get it completely wrong. Nobody said Baker threw 16 interception because he was hurt. And 2, if he doesn’t have it between the ears why was the best OC we have had here in years allowing him to change the play at the line of scrimmage? You are also an imbecile that can’t remember anything correctly. Or is it just a mental thing with Baker?

  77. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

ā€œIf the Bucs had a 2002 like defense then Baker is the type that can get to the playoffsā€œ

Not just that, the run game has to be spectacular and not just servicable.

Bakers best seasons as a QB, came with a run game the offense could stand on.

2020 with Hunt & Chubb for about 1,900 yards and 18 rush TDs

2024 with White, Irving & Tucker combine for about 2,000 yards and 15 rush TDs

You could say this for any QB, but these 2 seasons are the only years of Mayfields’ career where a team he was on with an offense he led won 10 or more games in his 8 season career.

2024 was by far his best year as a passer in terms of scores, yardage, and completion %. You hold that up to any year other than his 2020 and it’s even more glaring how perfect that storm had to be to draw that production out of Baker Mayfield the individual.

  78. Bucblind II Says:

You are right 914, BM6 did beat Lamar out for the Heisman. But like all other great qb Baker had a good “team”. We haven’t had a great team lately. Except when Mayfield was healthy and carrying us on his back.

  79. Nicholas Carlson Says:

I don’t think it was injuries. I think it was poor adjustments following scripted opening drives, plus guards who couldn’t pass protect.

  80. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

ā€œYou are right 914, BM6 did beat Lamar out for the Heisman. But like all other great qb Baker had a good ā€œteamā€.

Mind you, this would’ve been for Jacksons’ 2nd heisman in as many years on a far less talented Louisville team in comparison to the Sooner team Baker played for lol context matters so much

  81. 813bucboi Says:

    BUCBLIND

obviously, you use braille so i’ll keep it simple for you lol….

Who was the best OC in franchise history?…Liam?

so, Liam allowed baker to change plays at the LOS, that resulted in him leading the league in INTs lol

you just prove my point!!!!…or maybe you cant see that lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  82. 813bucboi Says:

    WBL i hear ya!!!

2024 was by far his best year as a passer in terms of scores, yardage, and completion %.
    ************************************************************

Even Bakers best still resulted in him leading the league in INTs & Fumbles lol…

the only way to win with baker is to have a top 5 defense and top 3 rushing attack…

2024 he tossed the most picks in the NFL and this year he tossed several 4th quarter INTs that doomed the team…before 3rd &28 it was Baker throwing ANOTHER 4th quarter pick

    GO BUCS!!!!

  83. HC Grover Says:

Bakefield is the perfect Bowzo QB. A lifetime .500 record. Fits right in to the Glazer Plans. Relax and win about half the games.

  84. Hunter Says:

It was completely obvious to me from the first drive of week 1 that Baker Mayfield was going to have an inconsistent season.

    Why?

Because he clearly reverted back to his old, bad habits when it comes to the basic fundamentals.

I was bummed on a deeper level, even with the win, because I knew it wasn’t going to last. Win streak was very surprising, but the wins were masking the bigger issue.

Inconsistent QB fundamentals in the NFL will ALWAYS lead to inconsistent QB play. ALWAYS.

The area that both Dave Canales & Liam Coen immediately focused on and optimized when tasked with fixing Baker Mayfield was seemingly COMPLETELY IGNORED by Josh Grizzard and Thad Lewis.

    Still baffles me!!

The fact that BOTH previous Offensive Coordinators LITERALLY showed us the successful, common sense blueprint to an elite version of Baker Mayfield, and WE STILL IGNORED IT?!?!

That is on EVERYONE. Coaches AND Baker.

How in the world Thad Lewis didn’t retain this knowledge & prioritize it makes him one of the worst QB “coaches” of all-time, in my eyes.

When interviewing Offensive Coordinators, they need to immediately eliminate any coach that doesn’t make it clear that this will be an immediate, prioritized part of their plan.

Literally nothing else is more important than this for the Bucs.

  85. The Frogman Says:

First, I am a Baker fan since his college days and happy he ended up with the Bucs. I see the exact same thing as when he was Clevelands savior. Played great until he got injured, played when he should have sat out. His biggest problem is being an animal competitor who thinks he’s superman. Great comparison to the 49ers this year, let Purdy heal and were fortunate to have QB2 be awesome and if they lost so be it.
All you have to do is tell Baker he sucks, then get out of the way!!!

  86. Bucblind II Says:

813, that really proved your point. What a moron. Bret Favre led all qb in interception and he is a HoF. Nimrod

  87. LANshark Says:

We won without Evans and Godwin and MacMillen. We lost without Mauch, Wirfs, and Bredeson. When are you people gonna learn that you can have all the stars in the world, and it won’t matter if they guys up front suck.

  88. Bucblind II Says:

    Frogman 100% correct

  89. Bucblind II Says:

WBL you are right about context. So why can’t you BH use context with him. But you can’t because it would get in the way of your desired narrative. That BM6 sucks. That’s the whole problem with the BH you refuse to tell the whole truth. You love throwing in little comments that you take completely out of context to reality. Thus the arguments

  90. Bucblind II Says:

WBL, I said he played on a good team and that helped him. So don’t act like you had to point that out. But yet here you are proving Bakers dilemma for us. Baker has never played on a good well coached team his whole NFL career. Just like you said about Lamar. He didn’t win because Baker was on a better team. Well just for your info that carries over to the NFL.

  91. Bucblind II Says:

When you lead all quarterbacks in playoff passer ratings you can win a superbowl. You just need the team and coaching. JUST LIKE ALL QUARTERBACKS NEED.

  92. Knothead71 Says:

Some of you guys are just silly. Here are the numbers.
Year. TM. YDS. TD. INT. PR
    2018 – Cle – 3725 – 27 – 14 – 93.9
    2019 – Cle – 3827 – 22 – 14 – 78.8
    2020 – Cle – 3563 – 26 – 8 – 95.9
    2021 – Cle – 3010 – 17 – 13 – 83.1
    2022 – LA – 85 – 4 – 2 – 86.4
    2022 – Car – 1313 – 6 – 6 – 74.4
    2023 – TB – 4044 – 28 – 10 – 94.6
    2024 – TB – 4500 – 41 – 16 – 106.8
    2025 – TB – 3693 – 26 – 11 – 90.6
    AVERAGE – 3470 – 24.6 – 12.6
Not incuding the first two years with the Bucs he is fairly consistent over his career.
Also if you compare his averages over the years to thus years numbers he had one of his better years with the exception of INTs.
He is an average QB that gets on streaks, good and bad and he needs help from the OC and a strong running game to be successful.
I’ll say it again, can we win with Mayfield at QB? Absolutely! But everything else better click into place.
I apologize in advance for any misspelled words or bad punctuation.

  93. Bucblind II Says:

    Little “context”.
2021 played with a torn labrum
2022 Carolina fired the coaches the team was so bad
2022 replaced injured Stafford on a team that was so beat up they went 5-12.
2018 the team was 1-31 before BM6 showed up, the worst record in NFL history but he set the NFL record for TD’s by quarterbacks
2024 the best OC BM6 ever had and he led the NFL
2025 When healthy he was ranked #1 for almost half the season and everybody’s MVP
    There is your “context”

  94. Knothead71 Says:

    @Bucblind ll
Also for context he is remarkably consistent over his career through all of that.
When Coach Bowles was asked if Baker’s injuries hurt his play this year the answer was NO.
As much as some of ya’ll will hate what I’m about to say it is a fact. 2023 and 2024 were the odd seasons. When you compare his numbers over the course of his career it’s obvious that everthing was just right those two years. The numbers, the context that you provided and what was put on film show, clearly that he regressed to his normal.
Now I’m not dogging him out or saying is not a decent QB, I’ve never said that.
But he also isn’t a great QB. He is an average, serviceable quarterback in the NFL.
And like BA said, “I want to see what’s behind door number two”.

  95. HC Grover Says:

Why? Because the Glazers are as WOKE as it gets.

  96. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

ā€œGreat comparison to the 49ers this year, let Purdy heal and were fortunate to have QB2 be awesome and if they lost so be itā€

  97. Steven007 Says:

Grover, what do you mean by that exactly? And by the way, I thought you were leaving.

  98. Bucblind II Says:

Knothead, I think most people can live with an “opinion” like yours about Baker. It’s the people that lie and take things completely out of context on purpose that catch the wrath. The thing about Baker is he has never had a good situation like most great quarterbacks have and that is a fact.g 2024 was the closest and look what he did. One day he will and people will realize what they missed.

  99. Gipper Says:

    Knothead71,

Wish you had added for Bee, WarrenBucsLoser, Munch and the rest of the anti Baker crowd the following: Baker Mayfield total INT’s first 8 years of his career equal 101. Tom Brady INT’s first full 8 years of his career equals 99. Point is that all QB’s throw INT’s. Some are on the QB, some are on passes stripped from wide receivers such as the 2 takeways from Cade Otton 2025 and the endzone TD take away from McMillan v Cowboys in 2024. Really get sick of all the fake experts here who blame Baker for everything. For the last time ,he played almost all of 2025 with a pathetic set of 3rd string guards, injured wide receivers, and his own injuries caused by running for his life because of a junior varsity Oline.

  100. Jmarkbuc Says:

    WBL

    Lynch is outstanding. Always was.

    Licht. Nope.

  101. Tom Petty Says:

The reason why Baker struggled this year is 90% mental.

Good Baker (great Baker?) plays with confidence, throws accurate passes, etc etc
Bad Baker (without confidence) is jumpy, stares down recievers, throws picks.

I’d blame the regression on Baker, and Grizz and the press blowing so much smoke up Baker’s a$$ early in the season. Baker has not learned how to handle praise and/or success yet.

Hoping that with the addition of a new OC and QB coach we can get the best version of Baker this upcoming season cause I do believe that best Baker is a top 5 QB and can win a SB šŸ¤žšŸ¼

  102. Crazyhorse54 Says:

Bad investments are part of a billionaire’s process. They made a bad investment in Bowles. What they were thinking when they gave him those extra years. That is on them. Hiring a competent, winning coach is their top priority or should be. Lesson learned. Never extend a coach who eked out a division spot when said division is as weak as the NFC South. If TB dominated the division by 3 or 4 games, ok. THAT didn’t happen…ever. The defense is obviously too complicated for the non-geniuses playing. Eat your losses and move forward.

  103. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Who had lots of interceptions this year,,, Darnold , Lawrence , Herbert were in the top 5 so throwing picks are not always the worst QBs ,,, Baler will be fine

  104. White Tiger Says:

Maybe we’ll get the answer if the Bucs bring in a legit backup…or a legit OC.

  105. CalBucsFan Says:

It was quite clear when Bridgwater came in he was woefully inadequate and the coaches and Baker could see that.

No doubt 9.5/10 of you guys will disagree, but the Bucs should have kept Trask, at least he was locked in to their system for several years, including adjusting to OC’s annually. He was talented enough and experienced enough to have filled in for a quarter, a half, and perhaps even start if needed so Baker could have healed quicker.

Bridgwater should be gone this offseason!

  106. Knothead71 Says:

    @Gipper
Couple things. I’m not comparing Baker to any other QB. That’s not a true indicator of what I’m saying. What I’m saying is, when you look at his entire body of work he is fairly consistently average.
Also, I’m not speaking for anyone else but myself when I say this. I don’t blame Mayfield for everything that went wrong for the Bucs this year.
There are many other problems with this organization and some of them are much bigger problems (in my opinion) than Baker. The only reason I’m posting about Baker is the article that I’m replying too is about Baker. I try to only post my thoughts about the content of the article that I’m replying too.
I”ve posted about Coach Bowles, quitters, soft defense, bad play calling, injuries and everything else and likely will post about those things again.
No Mayfield is not our biggest problem, but his play this year was A problem.

  107. Steve Says:

I have no doubt injuries played a part in Bakers demise after the bye, not just injuries to Baker but all across the offense however it I blame Grizz more than anything. Before the bye, if not for Baker playing the way he did the Bucs would’ve never been 6 – 2. but after the bye the offense looked confused and out of place, they played as if they didn’t know what their role was and Baker was left trying to figure out what everyone was doing. Folks on here swear Baker isn’t a good qb and his 9 picks in the second half is the reason the Bucs lost, news flash, good teams are able to overcome those types of mistakes. Going by the Baker haters logic, the Seahawks, Chargers, Bills, Broncos, and Jags should’ve never been in the playoffs or had winning records because everyone of their starting qb’s had double digit picks. Unless Baker gets a Liam Coen type OC for more than one year, he will never be a consistant top 5 qb.

  108. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

ā€œBaker Mayfield total INT’s first 8 years of his career equal 101. Tom Brady INT’s first full 8 years of his career equals 99. Point is that all QB’s throw INT’s. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This guy is making a comparison of Baker Mayfield to Tom Brady off accumulated INTs in a given amount of time, as if it’s enough to make anybody think outside of that just because they played QB they were capable of the same things or being the same quality of player. Far from the case, but cheap laughs are a guilty pleasure of mine so please continue. I’m sure Brady has more postseason INTs as well, let’s hear how that makes Baker as good as Tom lol

Brady was just on the telecast talking about how adjust finger place on how you load up to throw a pass in windy conditions can lessen the surface friction of a football after it leaves your hands so it limits the wind cannot alter the pass to the point it’s errant.

  109. Knothead71 Says:

    @Gipper
I think I got moderated but I’m not sure what I said that would have caused it. I’m gonna try again.
Comparing Mayfield to any other QB is not relevant to what I’m saying. I’m saying that over the course of his career Baker has been consistently average. Through injuries, bad teams, multiple OCs, all of those things, he is still the same quarterback. He is what his record says he is.
Also, Baker is not (in my opinion) the Buc’s biggest problem.
This organization has multiple problems and I will gladly post my thoughts about those problems in relevant replies to the articles the Joes post. I try to stay on topic.
Baker was not the biggest problem but his play was ONE of our problems.

  110. Bucblind II Says:

WBL ALWAYS takes the truth and twists it to his little corrupted “reality”. Gippers point wasn’t that Baker is as good as Tom. His point was ALL QB’s throw interceptions and you are the idiot that can’t differentiate between the two. What a joke

  111. VOT Says:

The back up guards were absolutely pitiful in the run and pass pro games – Wirfs and Luke missed many games – the OLine was a burden

No time for the long pass plays and not nearly enough scheming people open

Coen was light years ahead of Grizz here

Baker with the correct OC is lethal, if you try to put it all on his shoulders it’s likely not going to end well

Baker is a more physically talented Brad Johnson

  112. Vancouver Buc Says:

This guy is NOT a Super Bowl calibre QB.

  113. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Ahhhhhh the fangoils have brought out their Baker pom poms and fingernails to scratch yer eyes out with Buc fans. Push your skirts down ladies, Baker might not be the sole reason why we struggle but he’s a big part of it because he touches the ball on every play. His biggest problem is between his ears. He can’t read defenses and he suffers from a short qb disease just like Doug Flutie. He plays injured because he’s afraid of someone taking his spot and always feels he has something to prove. He’s a pretty good qb but will never be great and we’ll never go anywhere with him and Bowles together because of this and his style of play. No run game and or defense and him with his happy feet are not a good combo

  114. #1bucsfan Says:

Joe why is this a surprise ? Baker has bin inconsistent since arriving here. Not to this level but he will play great then have some Winston moments. I love Baker and how he plays but he needs to be more consistent. Right now we all know he’s inconsistent. Not a surprise. It is surprising that you are surprised by this. Do you watch the same games lol

  115. Mveal2006 Says:

    Cmon Joe.
Teddies a great guy but he was awful. Baker needed a decent backup

  116. Buc2Blame Says:

Realest ish Todd has said. He’s finally dumping accountability on his players in a fierce ā€œ I ain’t trying to hear that approach ā€œ

  117. Larrd Says:

He was healthy enough to play. It is just too much to ask a guy to carry the team for 17 games. They seem to break down mentally and press and play poorly. Fix the line and the running game and the play calling and Baker will be fine.

  118. Rod Munch Says:

Good Baker dominated the first part of the season, before the bye.

    ———–

    Yeah, that’s not what happened.

    Week 1 @ATL – 167 yards, 3 TDs = B

  119. BillyBucco Says:

Almost every QB deals with some sort of injury in season.
Trust me I love a feisty Baker but not if he can throw it also for a first down.
There are obvious running situations but he is forced to be Superman too much.
Look at Josh Allen last playoff game.
Yes they won, but I bet you they suffer for it this next game.
And so the conundrum for Buffalo will continue yet again.
Look at Lamar Jackson. Running QB. Gets hurt they miss the playoffs. 2 time MVP but can’t win jack.
Dual threat QBs don’t win SBs. Period.
Yes some are better runners than others but that isn’t the definition of a true Dual Threat QB. They exist in College for a reason.
There is way too much wrong with the Bucs this past season to even put in one post.
Egbuka being at -120 for OROTY when at 6-2 says it all.
Man caught 1 pass for 8 yds in the final game.
On every Todd Bowels team there is a pecking order. This is what dooms the Bucs. Not running screens to White was just dumb. Otton being the only non used TE is also dumb. Not having a backup QB, no pass rush, soft zone CBs, no ILBs, etc. etc. Im tired of the injuries excuses. Doesn’t bother good teams like SF.
Casey Phillips could have done better as a Special Teams coach.
They were the worst team in our Division, Conference and close to the entire NFL the last 9 games. Enough said.

  120. Bucblind II Says:

Littleboybuc99, this is how ignorant and disingenuous your post is, as usual. You said “Baker has short qb disease”. He is 1″ shorter than Mahomes and the same height as about 10 other QB in the league. You are a joke and wouldn’t know the truth if it slapped you in the face. I could go into your other less than truthful comments but I won’t due to boring everybody. It’s bad enough to read your bs once. Obviuosly you are still mad that Baker holds the all time career playoff passer rating.🤣 Try being honest for a change.

  121. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

ā€œHis point was ALL QB’s throw interceptions and you are the idiot that can’t differentiate between the two. What a jokeā€œ

  122. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    Bucblind,

I don’t have an ā€œagendaā€, I just really, really dislike when our offense does the opposite of scoring points.

    What is that exactly?

Taking your possession on offense and making plays that result in the other offense possessing the ball, with no points to show for the possession you started with the ball.

Granted, the nature of the game makes it’s so all INTs are not created or generated equally. Some having a bigger impact than others.

That 1st qtr INT while the score is 0-0 may not sting as much as that 4th qtr INT on a go-ahead drive, or if it’s to mathmatically put the game out of reach for your opponent.

An offense that can generate points more often than not can bounce back from either, not to so much if you’re a team struggling to score 25ppg.

Some of us can tell when they’re really, really bad. All of us who watched this team post bye, saw some bad game turning ones. Enough to be uneasy, given the ā€œdevelopmentā€ of our projected stater next season.

Not All of the problem, but he wasn’t solving’em either.

  123. Attaboy Says:

Remember before Baker was hurt he had the record for the most last minute comebacks to win the game and you boys said yeah but that’s against sorry teams that he barely beats. Then 6 of the teams we played made it to the playoffs and turns out they had some of the best defenses in the league and one, the Texans, had the best defense in the league period, remember that? 4 of the teams we played move on to the next round. The Texans that Baker spanked like a red headed step child with a last minute drive just spanked the Steelers by locking them down with that defense that Baker spanked. BM6 just continually makes you boys look stupid doesn’t he, over and over again.

  124. MadMax Says:

    ^yup

  125. PLawson Says:

Maybe give Mayfield columns a rest as they simply give those desperate to denigrate him a forum to display their personal animus and ignorance more than any valid evaluation based on facts. Faced with the inconvenient fact that Mayfield’s stats for the year were similar or better than a number of QBs considered among the best in the league, and that he was working under conditions far worse than any of them, they dwell on every mistake as if it validates their negative evaluation. In addition to the stats anybody can find on ESPN, it turns out Mayfield led the league in yards per carry among QB at 6.9. The “debate” about Mayfield just distracts from what the Bucs can do now to improve in 2026.

  126. Joe Says:

Maybe give Mayfield columns a rest

Joe never has and never will practice ostrich journalism.

  127. What it is Says:

PLawson hit the nail on the head🫔

  128. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker chokes in big games that’s why he’s 1-9 in prime time games the bucs will never win or go to a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield and it doesn’t matter how you Baker fan boys feel about it.

  129. Bucblind II Says:

No, Oneilbuc, Baker doesnt choke he does exactly what all the other qb’s do who are human, throws an interception once in a while. The only difference is that he plays better than all the quarterbacks down through the history of the NFL in the playoffs. Again, he has the record for playoff passer rating-105.9. Mahomes even doesn’t play as good. Now this is how the NFL decides how good a qb played in a game and when it’s the playoffs NOBODY plays better than BM6, NOBODYšŸ˜‚ according to the NFL anywayšŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚

  130. Attaboy Says:

Yes according to the NFL Mayfield does own the playoffs. The coaches just have to have the team play like he does and we would go deep.

  131. Stetematt Says:

When guard play sucks you get Happy Feet Baker. It’s really simple as that.

  132. Marky mark Says:

Baker is,a bargain quality starting QB. Even with non quality portions ,he had,a better season than massively over paid Dak Prescott. As we see with the Browns when you over pay for a couple of players, all you can afford with the rest of the team is the veterans minimum. So every bargain has a catch… For Baker the catch is he is a full body thrower. So any little injury effects the whole throwing process. We,saw that in Cleveland 2021.

Baker is,a bargain quality starting QB. Even with non quality portions ,he had,a better season than massively over paid DP. As we see with the Brownies when you over pay for a couple of players, all you can afford with the rest of the team is the veterans minimum. So every bargain has a catch… For Bakes the catch is he is a full body thrower. So any little injury effects the whole throwing process. We,saw that in Cle 2021.

Bucblind. Baker is a choke artist that’s why he’s on his 4th team. Lol šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ again the bucs will never win or go to a Superbowl as long as he’s the quarterback and this will be his last year with the bucs so all you Baker fan boys enjoy this year and then get ready to fowoll him on his 5th team.

Baker owns the playoffs lol 🤣🤣 how many playoff wins does he have? Lol šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ stats don’t mean nothing if you ain’t winning. He’s 1-9 in prime time games that’s all you need to know about a quarterback like Baker Mayfield. He threw away 7 games in a row good quarterbacks don’t do that.
