Todd Monken Will Interview For Open Playcaller Gig
January 13th, 2026As he did in 2023, Todd Monken will interview later this week for the Bucs’ open offensive coordinator job.
There were rumors Monken turned down the job from Todd Bowles three years ago and he hired Dave Canales instead.
Joe wrote last week about Monken, the former Bucs receivers coach and 2018 offensive coordinator.
Monken turns 60 in February and called plays for Tampa Bay when Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick combined to throw for a whopping 5,358 yards with 36 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in 2018.
Yes, Monken knows how to scheme an offense (and a run game), which he’s done for the past three seasons in Baltimore and with the national champion Georgia Bulldogs in the three seasons prior to that. Monken spent 2019 as offensive coordinator for some guy named Baker Mayfield in Cleveland, but Monken was not the playcaller there.
Monken had the full respect of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin when he coached them, and Joe has no reason to believe he’s shed his hardass-coach approach.
Monken’s familiarity with the Bucs and Mayfield makes him an interesting candidate, and he’s a guy who could take over as head coach if that becomes a thing a year from now.

January 13th, 2026 at 1:29 pm
No brainer if we can get him.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:30 pm
On the plus side, if they hire him to be the OC, he’ll be able to see right away that Baker is not capable of winning big games under pressure.
That should keep the Glazers from wasting money on an extension for Baker.
Focus on getting a stud QB in the Draft in 2027. Tell Licht this is his last shot to prove his worth in that arena.
If Licht fails again(Winston was a bust), then he gets the boot.
Bowles will provide a bad enough record in 2026 to get a decent draft position.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:32 pm
That would be interesting, seeing if Harbaugh would not want to keep him as part of his staff, if he goes to ATL with those weapons (Bijan Robinson), Giants, and Titans with young QBs. It would be interesting indeed.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:33 pm
Bring back Winston to back up Baker, then Baker can play carefree, and we would have a backup who we know can ball out
January 13th, 2026 at 1:39 pm
He’s probably about the best they could get. He got nothing to lose at his age. Everyone already knows who he is so his reputation wouldn’t necessarily be on the line when this thing implodes.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:41 pm
This is the best news of the day. He is the guy if we can get him. Is his interview in person or on virtual? I think, so far, the other ones have been virtual but I could be mistaken.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:43 pm
This off-season is gonna be hella depressing…
January 13th, 2026 at 1:44 pm
*when that becomes a thing a year from now. Fixed it for you Joe.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:45 pm
Bidding war for this guy. Would the Bucs pony up?
January 13th, 2026 at 1:46 pm
Harbaugh to atl and dime piece Dave in Caroline bucs keep bowels you are right this off-season is already pretty depressing.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:51 pm
I’m not impressed by his work this season. Not that the Glazers give a rip but Monken isn’t near the top of my list.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:51 pm
Mike Evans with 1200
January 13th, 2026 at 1:53 pm
I wonder if Monken will let Bowles blame him when the defense give up 30+ a game.
January 13th, 2026 at 1:55 pm
Operation save my job 2.0 in full effect.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:00 pm
I wanted him as HC so would definitely take him as OC now (and HC later if Coach Bowles can’t figure his defense out).
January 13th, 2026 at 2:01 pm
i suspect there is tie to Harbaugh who reportedly wouldn’t fire him. we may have to sweeten the pot and offer him asst. head coach. give him free rein to make in game decisions and let ToDD fix the defense.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:03 pm
Yea good luck I think he is interviewing to keep his name out there but most likely wherever Harbaugh goes he is going.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:11 pm
Mike Tomlin left the Steelers. Bring him back home to Tampa.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:14 pm
Yes pleases
January 13th, 2026 at 2:16 pm
Sounds good. He might have an interest in the OC job as after the Bucs have another bored defense in ‘26, there should be a HC position to fill.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:17 pm
rrsqr, you can’t be serious. Funny though.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:19 pm
Mike Tomlin HC and Todd Monken OC. Sign me up.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:24 pm
I love Monken.
How does he look in capri pants though?
🤔
January 13th, 2026 at 2:25 pm
Tomlin as HC with Monken as OC would be a dream team. Bowles should resign so fans can at least have some expectations of something different next season.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:25 pm
Sign him, the fire Lovie Bowels. I can dream.

Bring back America’s QB to Tampa!
January 13th, 2026 at 2:32 pm
Clearly the best candidate. Make him assistant head coach. Guy is blue ribbon.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:46 pm
Bring back Winston who got benched in Cleveland! Threw 3 interceptions in one game against the Broncos. 2 were picked for Touchdowns.
Ya that makes sense to those that have their Jameis blowup dolls inflated.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:50 pm
yes would love to see the monk man here…
with baker…
and even jameis in the mix as a back up ready to eat W’s
January 13th, 2026 at 2:51 pm
I’m ok with Monken. Our O line and running game is much better this time around so I-think he could have success here next year.
January 13th, 2026 at 2:51 pm
let’s freakin’ sling it boys !
January 13th, 2026 at 2:55 pm
Jameis was scrambling and always under pressure here. No Oline , no running game and always 14 points or more down thanks to a non existent defense. Even worse defense than what we have today if that is possible. So yeah, I would take Jameis back to replace Teddy. At least he won’t get WRs killed with loopy passes.
January 13th, 2026 at 3:01 pm
Buc4evr….. 3 has never done anything but produce turnovers, everywhere….. STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR THAT @%#$ING GUY!!!
January 13th, 2026 at 3:14 pm
Seems like a conservative choice. Not my least favorite but not sure what kind of scheme/strategy he’d implement with our offensive pieces.
His familiarity with Baker could be a plus 👍🏼
January 13th, 2026 at 3:16 pm
The Bucs and Bowles are gonna be just fine in 26. If they get a good OC , DB coach, get rid of the lofting players and please get some DL players, they will be fine. One other thing too, they need to take a good look at the training staff. The NFL is a rough game and every team have injuries but darn, every player on the Bucs roster has been out with injuries not once but at least twice the past 2 years
January 13th, 2026 at 3:40 pm
Monken worked with BM in 2019 with the Browns and already knows everything about him. He recommended bringing in Baker as backup to Lamar in 2023 before Baker signed with the Bucs when the Ravens had yet to sign Lamar to an extension. Monken thinks highly of Baker. Too bad Alstott1.
January 13th, 2026 at 3:50 pm
no thanks!!!!
monken had a 2 time MVP & KING HENRY as his RB and didnt do sh!t!!!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!
January 13th, 2026 at 4:01 pm
AI Review: Bottom line: Todd Monken is generally considered a very good — sometimes top-tier — offensive coordinator with a strong history of success, especially when paired with the right talent. Like all coaches, his results vary somewhat by circumstance, but his resume includes multiple elite offensive seasons at both the NFL and college levels.
January 13th, 2026 at 4:05 pm
Enough with this BS. Here are the data when he was here:
When Todd Monken was the offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016–2018), his unit was generally productive and well-rated in several key offensive categories, especially in the passing game. Here’s a summary of how the offense performed under him:
📊 Overall Offensive Performance
3rd in first downs per game during his three seasons, showing consistency in moving the chains.
2nd in the NFL in passing yards per game (279.5) over that span, indicating a high-powered aerial attack.
1st in third-down conversion percentage (44.4%), meaning the offense sustained drives well.
The offense also finished mid-pack or better in total yards per game (375.1).
📈 Best Season (2018)
In 2018, Tampa Bay’s offense under Monken was especially strong:
1st in the NFL in net passing yards — the top passing offense in the league.
3rd in total net yards.
12th in scoring (points per game).
This year was arguably his most successful in Tampa Bay, with the offense among the league’s more explosive units.
🧠 Style and Strengths
The offense was known for its explosive passing game, especially with weapons like Mike Evans and Jameis Winston.
It was effective at sustaining drives and converting third downs — a sign of offensive efficiency.
January 13th, 2026 at 4:09 pm
Bring Mark Andrew’s over or draft a couple TEs. Wonder if he would retain Otton?
January 13th, 2026 at 4:13 pm
Two College National Championships; Had the Ravens one game from the championship. Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2015.
January 13th, 2026 at 4:18 pm
It wouldn’t matter who we get. The complainers are going to complain. Some people you will never make happy
January 13th, 2026 at 4:20 pm
I listened to a podcast interview yesterday where apparently Lamar Jackson did not talk to Todd Monken for pretty much the entirety of the regular season. Todd Monken would be a great hire. No one should let what happened to Baltimore this season dissuade their opinion on Monken.
Baltimore has a Lamar problem.
January 13th, 2026 at 4:25 pm
Hire him!! He knows Baker, let’s get busy putting up 30 points again!!!
January 13th, 2026 at 4:33 pm
Altsott1, Mayfield only has the best playoff passer rating of ALL TIME, thats all.
January 13th, 2026 at 4:46 pm
meh…
January 13th, 2026 at 4:50 pm
Now we are cooking with oil. We should get him and make him the highest paid OC.
Monken + Tomlin = Super Bowl
Otherwise, 2026 is
RINSE AND REPEAT
SMH
January 13th, 2026 at 5:07 pm
Would love to see Monken here. He’d have a QB whole listened and could read defenses, an o-line that is solid, excellent WR’s that can get open, and a very good RB room.
Defense should get the primary attention in the draft and the cash for FA’s – In hopes to get them to be at least NFL average.
We get a HC succession plan.
January 13th, 2026 at 5:11 pm
Attaboy are you serious, hanging your hat on that? You fan(boi)s are something else Wyeth your delusions of Baker’s greatness! Mayfield sucks in pressure games, night games and never been to a Championship game nor Superbowl. Has 2 turnovers in key moments that lost play off games and had the best OC ever, great run game, great numbers in 2024 but couldn’t beat a decent defense in Washington. He’s been a middling qb his whole career and is too needy in order to win
January 13th, 2026 at 5:21 pm
Finally a real candidate.
January 13th, 2026 at 5:27 pm
No he sucks to he had his chance here some of the people in bucs meadi wants coaches that they like personal. He suck as a oc !!
January 13th, 2026 at 5:29 pm
Attaboy. Who cares about that how many wins do he have in the playoffs? He’s 1-9 in prime time games Baker Mayfield ain’t it!!
January 13th, 2026 at 5:47 pm
Jameis? BUWWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That guy is a loser like Licht and Bowles
Our fanbase sucks out loud
January 13th, 2026 at 5:59 pm
Winston is a 1st ballot HOF QB, literally the best to ever play the game, but he kept getting injured. But when healthy, he’d win you a SB every single year. But gosh-darnit, those injuries, they never stopped.
January 13th, 2026 at 6:17 pm
I think B’more has a qb problem and Monken was sacrificed to keep their qb happy. Harbaugh is loyal and would not fire his OC, so he got launched too. Lamar Jackson allegedly stays up all night playing video games, is late for meetings and then sleeps through the ones he is at. The team adjusted their schedule for Jackson and this might have helped fracture their locker room. Monken demanded accountability and he got launched for it. The Bucs need accountability.
January 13th, 2026 at 6:20 pm
Monken wouldn’t be a bad hire, but he doesn’t really excite me. Toad won’t be able to get a young up and comer.
January 13th, 2026 at 6:44 pm
I like this because he won’t be looking to move next year.
January 13th, 2026 at 7:12 pm
Mike Tomlin would cost multiple high round picks. So…no.
And I’ll be nice…no to Winston returning.
No to Teddy re-signing.
January 13th, 2026 at 7:20 pm
Don’t mythologize Coen. One and done last year; one and done this year. His team had a 4th place schedule. Coen not as good a play caller as Monken.
January 13th, 2026 at 7:22 pm
He won games with Hunley at QB. Having worked with Mike, and Chris goes a long way. He made a small Georgia QB a national champ. He’s an experienced play caller. Gets my vote.
January 13th, 2026 at 7:24 pm
ALSTOTTNUMBER1 might literally be mentally challenged. Chose to hate on baker without seeing what he can do with a new offensive coordinator and your asking the Bucs to draft a stud qb in 2027. First what qb in college right now is just an absolute stud? Second what makes you think a qb is gonna be available during the late 1st round that’s a stud? You literally are one of the more dumb people I’ve ever seen type on here
January 13th, 2026 at 7:49 pm
monken should be the fit…don’t let him leave without signing on the dotted line
January 13th, 2026 at 7:52 pm
i’m all about having jameis as a skilled back up you can lean on…
but would jameis even want to return to tampa in that role…?
January 13th, 2026 at 7:59 pm
My vote is for Monken.
January 13th, 2026 at 8:01 pm
Hire Monken, do the best we can in 2026 and then kick Bowles to the curb and make Monken HC.
Then hire the best DC available and start looking like a REAL football team.

Over the last 3 seasons cumulative, Baker has the 3rd most passing yards and 5th most TDs. I would say he’s definitely a keeper. As for Winston as a backup, I would take anyone over noodle arm, paycheck stealing Teddy.
January 13th, 2026 at 8:16 pm
LittleDavid69, 105.9, that is the #1 playoff passer rating of ALL-TIME. And there is NOTHING you can say or do about it. It is a fact. In playoff games he is the best.
January 13th, 2026 at 8:21 pm
What it tells you football midgets oneielbuc and the rest of you “fans” is Baker isn’t the problem. When you have a qb that leads ALL qb in playoff passer ratings, he’s not the problem. That really gets to you people doesn’t it!!
January 13th, 2026 at 8:30 pm
If we have to be saddled with Lying Todd (Bowles), then this Todd would ease a bit of that pain.
I’d happily give him the HC spot while he’s here.
January 13th, 2026 at 8:32 pm
Monken’s interview is reported to be in person.
January 13th, 2026 at 8:33 pm
Your object of adulation, Patrick Mahomes is even behind him at 105.4. Behind him!!! BM6 rules the playoffs. The hilarious part is that you bois expect people to believe the other quarterbacks never make mistakes. You have to remember we are not as dumb as you haters.
January 13th, 2026 at 10:24 pm
Google AI says to go with Mike McDaniel for OC. The Fins averaged more points per game than all other OC/HC,s that were shown the door. Who knows, may be it will not be 2 runs up the middle and a 3rd down pass next year.
