Jason Licht Talks Fresh Legs

December 23rd, 2025

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Interesting intel from the Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.

Did the Bucs look like the faster, fresher, hungrier team Sunday against the Panthers? Joe’s not sure. However, Licht let it be known before the game that the Bucs were tracking faster and fresh in practice leading up to the game.

Tampa Bay had the “rest edge” on Carolina, meaning the Bucs were playing on 10 days rest after a Thursday night game and Carolina was playing on seven days rest.

Licht was asked on the official pregame radio show whether the extra rest helped the team. Absolutely, Licht replied.

“Oh, it certainly did,” Licht said. “You could see it in the, you know, just the way the guys were moving, more energy [in practice]. You could also see it in the numbers [from] sports science; guys are hitting higher marks in their accelerations, their speeds, all those kinds of things. That was a big benefit of having the mini-bye.”

Licht added that he hoped the extra rest would translate to the field against the Panthers.

Did it?

    That’s not saying much

  7. ChiBuc Says:

Joe, you’ve already, mercifully, dropped th3 “defensive genius” moniker for Bowles; it’s time to lose Licht’e “”roh” title. JL clearly does not have his finger on the pulse of this team. If he did, he’d be liable for allowing it to slowly die under his watch. Instead, he passively sits back and does nothing. Maybe another great coach/leader (like BA) will force his hand to save his job and resurrect his team, but Licht….crickets.

  8. Tony Says:

What kind of fresh legs? Crab legs? Frog legs?

  9. Baker Bowl Says:

It did not. But I will say conditioning didn’t seem like the reason for poor play. I don’t know how to explain what I’m watching from the Bucs other than chaotic, undisciplined and uninterested.

It doesn’t necessarily look like a team that doesn’t want to lose, just a group of guys who don’t know how to win with what they’re doing, and not knowing the right in-game adjustments to make.

I’m not quite on the Licht out train yet because I really don’t believe our guys are less talented than who we’re losing to. I mean we were here at the start of the season going on about how fully healthy, this team could compete for a ring. The personnel hasn’t changed, but the play on the field has plummented.

I don’t want to put all the blame on the coaching staff because at the end of the day the players make the plays, but someone has to answer as to why a Super Bowl calibre roster is 7-7.

  10. Smarter than Joe Says:

All that rest can’t overcome coaching incompetence

  11. ChiBuc Says:

Even his coveted OL betrays Licht’s ROH status. Depth is more important thant overpaying 1 year wonders who take an annual month long vacation mid-season

  12. RagingBrisket Says:

    Licht is so overrated

  13. Doughboy Says:

Time for change. Top to bottom. Build around the young core guys,Wirfs,Barton,Ebuka,,Irving and the corners and safties. I’d trade Vea. Keep the kicker and rebuild special teams . Too late for Coehn now but someone like him.

  14. PSL Bob Says:

Yeah, the WRs were running great routes. The play calling didn’t give them a chance to demonstrate what fresh legs look like.

  15. Lessismord Says:

…. And Braswell is going to have a breakout year…..

How did that work out Jason?? I really hope you and the Glazers are game planning the next regime NOW!! Regardless of how these last 2 games play out!

You are getting on thin ice too…

Ring of Losers Jason Licht still talking up the trash he has collected over the years.

He should be on the Hoarders show

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

I’m hoping Bud Licht has fresh enough legs to carry his azz out of One Buc unassisted.

  22. BUC4L Says:

You can’t make this crap up…this season in all of the Bucs seasons I have watched has me the most baffled. Bowels has seriously made everyone around him believe in his crap. Can’t wait for him to be fired! He has completely neutered this team. Go Bucs!

  23. ChiBuc Says:

Maybe JL will make Mauch the highest pd RG next year, or Mr. Miss-a-lot Kancy a top dollar DL, best yet let’s throw $60 million/yr guaranteed to our “clutch” QB who had a chance to beat 3 dogs in a row but instead lays down belly up. Licht is not a leader. He is a trend follower who is late to the party. Spytek kept him germane and now….???

  24. Ballwasher61 Says:

It’s time to put a cork in it Jason. Optimism unrealized is a humiliating kick in the crotch…. which is what this team has been. No more before game interviews by anyone, just study and play the damn game hard, the time for talk is way past gone. Hearing about a great practice against your own team is ridiculous, especially against this defense. Or offense for that matter. I gave Bowles props for pulling the team together the past 2 years. Not now. There is zero heart anywhere on this team that I can see. As for guys yapping about a fire under their butt’s, as one of Joe’s previous posts had, how about shutting the hell up and playing like it. If these guys as a collective group aren’t angry about where they have put themselves then they all need to be gone. Instead of getting angry when they were letting the Falcons come back on them I actually flipped the script in my head and rooted for the Falcons and laughed, it kept me from getting angrier. If we as fans see this and get mad about it why don’t the people playing the game do the same thing? Hey Buc’s, you don’t think this crap stings as a fan to watch this team go from being talked well about to becoming a laughable dumpster fire. Think again.

Bad coaching exemplifies itself even more with extra time to prepare. Bucs have the worst coaching staff in the NFL and the results reflect on the field.

  32. Kevin Voigt Says:

The thing that gets me thinking about JL is what I’ve heard other posters say. Sometimes it seems like instead of making the safe and needed pick, he takes a wild one. Like he’s the smartest guy in the room.

  37. Tampa Stadium Says:

I am going to talk out of both sides of my mouth. If we win 2 games in a row, and 1 playoff game. Everyone will love our GM and our head coach. If we lose in the first round we were better off losing the final 2 games. So what do we have now? We have the moment! We need to to stop being a lazy team with no heart. I LOVED WINFIELD. Since he got paid he sure is not the same player. He needs that chip on his shoulder. Sapp, Brooks, Rhonde, Lynch, Rice, and A-train never were this. Winfield start playing like you can. Stop being a you know what! VITA WRECK THE GAMES! Dennis be a real LB! LD has and is giving it his all! These Rookies its your time to lead us. No rookie wall excuses. You all need to step up! It’s on our Defense. Play with heart and passion. Stop being little you know whats!

  38. Old Sombrero Says:

Fresh legs? Fresh legs? Okay. Great we’re talking about how good they look in practice. I think this comment is a back handed indictment on Bowles. For the GM to publicly say they look good in practice is saying ‘the players I drafted and acquired look good in practice but the players I drafted and acquired suck on game day’. What happened at the bye? That’s the answer to why this team tanked. I wonder if the team came back after the bye not mentally ready to come back strong which means Bowles didn’t address this before the bye. Too late to address after.

  39. JoeyJoeStein Says:

I see a team that checked-out months ago.

Licht has turned into nothing but a gaslighter to the fans. He’s so full of $h!t it’s stunning.

Not sure why folks are turning on JL. He’s done great for us. It’s all on Bowles.

  42. DS Says:

Licht’s words before games are so funny after we lose lol
He doesn’t see it either. IDK if team glazer goes big game coach hunting the coach may choose his own GM.

  43. Bucs And Them Says:

Fresh legs definitely a priority in a late season push to the Dominican Republic!

  44. Bee Says:

This team doesn’t practice on the field. They mostly do walk-throughs so of course when it’s time to play theyre out of sync. They only play football on game days lol

  45. BPBucsfan Says:

But he has all his draft picks for April!! Somewhere out there’s another JTS or Chris Braswell lurking to suck up those picks!

Not sure why folks are turning on JL. He’s done great for us. It’s all on Bowles.

Other than BA telling Jason to hire him, then telling Jason to Get Suh, JPP, and Brady followed by Brady telling JL to grab Gronk, AB, and Fornette, exact what has Jason done other than a bit of draft successes??? Even a blind squirrel can find a nut among an elite pile of semi pro college players. I bet half the ppl on this board would have similar draft success, but would not have a locker room full of nice guy busses. Ntm, his “I am that man” , err, culture that suggests accountability while nobody appears accountable. JL is a HC puppet who lost his best hand, Spytek, and is now jerking us all off left-handed

  48. ModHairKen Says:

    Fresh legs, complacent mind.

Lazy. Uninspired. Uncaring. Priceless. Check cashiers. Loafers.

Licht is deeply disappointed in them. He picked them. He realizes he failed.

But, he also knows that the head coach was thrust up upon him by Bruce Arians for nefarious reasons.

The players like Todd. They simply are sorry individuals who’ve given up and are living a very fancy life. They don’t care. They don’t care. They don’t care.

  49. BucsfaninOregon Says:

I think Licht is as much to blame as Bowles. He is smoking his own product when he comes out with how great Braswell is going to be. Right! “Fresh Legs”…Right!

After keeping JTS for years was a blueprint for what is going on with Braswell and others. I doubt that he would have even drafted Saap if he fell into his lap like Saap did those many years ago. Saap wouldn’t have been the “right” attitude for the “culture” he and Bowles has established in Tampa. Right!!!

And, certainly he and Bowles would never ever traded for Saap if he was available from another team. After seeing the current “culture” on the field Saap would have publicly blasted everyone involved.

The Glaziers need to clean house and get some someone with modern football brains and hire a GM with talent and let someone else run this Gong Show in Tampaaa!

  52. Aubpierce Says:

Jason and Bowles have about the same winning percent if you take into count Bowles record with the Jets, minus Brady’s record under Jason. Is there anybody left on the Bucs from the 2021 draft? Both need to be fired.

  53. firethecannons Says:

Just got off espn where I read ben solak article bout 4 teams etc–the Bucs was one of them. Absolutely nailed our problem with Baker and with Bowles. worth a read!

  54. Colonel Angus Says:

Everybody looks fresh in a walk-through practice I reckon.

  55. BucsFan81 Says:

So are the people in charge at one Buc delusional are they not watching the same games we are. They act like everything is A ok. Yet this team has lost 6 out of the last 7 games. When are we going to wake up here.

  56. Vegasbuc Says:

    Fire Todd

  57. Aceofaerospace Says:

We’ll never know if the fresh legs helped because we have an idiot offensive coordinator and idiot head coach/defensive coordinator.

  58. Al Johnson Says:

He needs to be fired. This mess of lack of talent outside of the jvish late round picks, and his propensity to resign players vs letting them play out their contracts is on him.

  59. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Other than BA telling Jason to hire him, then telling Jason to Get Suh, JPP, and Brady followed by Brady telling JL to grab Gronk, AB, and Fornette, exact what has Jason done other than a bit of draft successes???”

Outside of hiring Bowles for Arians, and signing Gronk for Brady, none of that can be proven.

Jason was given permission to go all in, and he did. Successfully.

As to what has he done?

🏈 Built a Superbowl caliber offensive line that was good enough to convince Brady to sign
🏈 Built a Superbowl caliber WR core
    🏈 Drafted multiple top picks
🏈 Went all in on the cap…got the ring…then fixed the cap in two years.
🏈 Rebuilt the offensive line for Mayfield (injuries not his fault)
    🏈 Drafted Mike Evans replacement
🏈 Signed multiple players who contributed to getting a ring
🏈 Fixed our kicking issue years ago

We have lots of talent on this team, and Jason Licht is the reason for it. He doesn’t coach the team. He doesn’t play the games.

He has some things forced on him, like making Bowles head coach (part of the deal with Arians), but he strives to make sure the HC has what he needs to succeed.

Yes, people point at him not building a good defense…but that was because he had to build a great offense first. And while the offense has dried up in the second half of the season, he’s not at fault for that. Injuries and coaching are.

And the current state of the OL is not healthy. It’s got 2 players on IR.

  60. Baking with the next one Says:

    Goedeke had fresh legs!!!

  61. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Just like fans wanted to replace our kicker earlier this name, even though he was good, now many want Light replaced, even though he is the best GM we’ve ever had.

This is why fans and trolls should not make any decisions.

  62. Baker Bowl Says:

    @Bonzai

Agreed 100%. I feel like the JL discourse went very south, very quickly. Talent and team building have not been the issue (other than pass rush) but I attribute the lack of effective pass rush to Bowles scheme for now, until I’m able to see our guys actually rushing the passer instead of dropping into coverage.

  63. Baking with the next one Says:

Joe we want to know what happened during the bye week that set off Todd losing the team?????

  64. Show Me The TDs Says:

    Gruden.

  65. ChiBuc Says:

    @Bonzai,

Maybe the numbers are missing for you, but the dots remain. Please tell me of JL’s accomplishments outside of the BA era. Is it drafting QBs? No. Building a DL? No. Insisting Todd hire a DC after yrs of poor pass defense? No. How bout coaches HE has hired? No [do not tell me JL, or anyone for that matter, can convince BA to do something he is not all in on. BA wanted back in, scouted the best roster with a coach opening, and convince Jason…. I will never believe it was the other way around]. How about trade deadline acquisitions? No. Rattling the team to avoid the swoon? No. Record minus BA? NO.

Overpaying for injury prone 3rd yr players? Yes. Totally out of touch with his coaches capabilities (eg Todd), players’ developmen (eg, Braswell), preparedness if team (see article)? Yes. Allowing special teams to drown the team and not forcing a coach change? Yes. Totally absent and unaccountable during every swoon? Yes

Your bullet list (kicking issues? Really, how many misses were there? What about the punter carousel?) Is mostly a timeline of conjecture and every accomplishment listed is during BA. Also, he fixed the cap by leaving money on the table while our edge flounders and the window closes. Is he saving to resign Kancey the broken doll or past his prime Vea. Maybe throw top money at unproven Mauch. He falls in love with his homegrown tomatoes and has no eyes for others. He is NOT progressive and IS slow to react….missing out on Coen, sticking with Todd, and he just waits for Todd to cry for help before he throws a JPP life preserver. We have pulled back the curtain of receipts and realize OZ is nothing more than smoke and mirrors, like Bowles’s defense

  66. IrishTony Says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m not confident they can beat Miami with a 3rd string QB

  67. Obvious One Says:

I MUST HAVE missed a pretty Large piece of “Actual History”. Um where does some people get this inside info that a deal was struck with Arians that “Todd Bowkes” MUST succeed him? Just EXACTLY WHO SAID that, THAT IS A FACT? WHAT THE ACTUAL ….

I see some people with “clear inside” commenting on this board…. O Wait!

    Who Again????

  68. SteveK Says:

Trade for a legit pass rusher or two!

No more drafting busts. JTS, Braswell are not it. Could have traded their draft picks for a difference maker. Sign a FA, just pony the heck up and get us a pass rush. Our pass rush stinks so hard right now it’s painful to watch each level of the defense get exposed bc of these shenanigans.

I totally agree that Bowles is a problem. So, please tell me the name of the person with the power to fix that problem? Which, btw, pass rush has been a problem for 4 YEARS. JL can insist on TB hiring a DC, he can get a new HC, he could bring in proven pass rushing FAs and insist that they rush the QB (ala BA), but Jason does NOTHING

  71. garbs65 Says:

Is there a replay of this interview somewhere? I’d like to hear the questions asked…or more precisely, what questions were not asked. Of course, he is not going to throw anyone under the bus at this point. And listen, I like Bowles. But something has to change…whatever program that has been in place isn’t working. The game plans suck. The players don’t appear to be motivated. Our OL is bad. But Baker’s accuracy is way off. idk. Too many holes to fill on defense. We are a couple off season’s away from being a real contender. He/they can’t fix the defense in one draft…and also fix the OL. There is no way Licht thinks there is creativity in the offense. So many questions for him that he wouldn’t answer anyway…lol

  72. Obvious One Says:

Hey ChiBuc, you know what’s weird? You’re ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! And YET this guy is STILL the best GM we’ve ever had….

I’m Disgusted with everything AND MORE with what you just listed! I was Certainly JUMPING UP AND DOWN during the trade deadline for a move from our “Vaulted GM” and pointed out Several Times in Several Ways just “how bad it looked alone from the players Needing help points of view”! MUCH LESS how it was a Bad Look to the rest of US….

  73. HC Grover Says:

  74. ChiBuc Says:

    @Obvious,

Idk…some might say, based on drafting alone (see 1995); not to mention the balls to dump dungy for gruden, that McKay’s resume may be a bit more robust than “puppet to your HC” Jason

  75. ChiBuc Says:
