Worst Game In Years For Luke Goedeke

December 21st, 2025

Bad game.

When Luke Goedeke was drafted in 2022, the Bucs tried him at left guard after the shocking retirement of Ali Marpet. Goedeke came into the league as a right tackle at Central Michigan.

Goedeke struggled so badly as a rookie he was eventually benched.

To close the 2022 regular season, the Bucs rested then right-tackle Tristan Wirfs and Goedeke got a start there. He played well and has been there ever since. He’s been a rock at right tackle.

But not today.

Goedeke had multiple penalties for false starts which helped torpedo Bucs drives. And he didn’t play his usual stout best, either.

Now Goedeke wasn’t why the Bucs lost but his worst game in years couldn’t have come at a worse. time. Bucs coach Todd Bowles was clearly frustrated about the penalties in his postgame remarks.

“False starts were a problem,” Bowles said when asked what Goedeke’s deal was today. “We can’t start first-and-15 every drive and expect to overcome that offensively.

“I mean, we did some good things, but too many penalties that hurt us and shot ourselves in the foot.”

An ugly penalty may have cost the Bucs the game today. On second-and-four from the Carolina-37, Emeka Egbuka was called for a false start, backing the Bucs up.

Bowles said the Bucs were only six yards away from Chase McLaughlin’s range. Had he been able to kick a field goal, the game likely would have gone into overtime.

On the next play, Mayfield threw his game-ending interception. The insinuation here is that had the Bucs been second-and-four from the Carolina-37, the Bucs likely would have called a different play than the play they eventually called, which resulted in Mayfield’s pick.

And that’s before considering the drive was screwed up before it started.

I seriously wonder if he is having concussion-related issues.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Let’s not act like he’s a quality starter…….he’d be a backup on most NFL teams

  4. Rod Munch Says:

    Everyone’s fault but Baker.

Was wondering who would get the blame this week instead of the man who deserved it. I guess we couldn’t blame the defense this week, so instead it’s the OC, it’s special teams, its the offensive line, it’s Evans, etc etc etc.

Yes there is a word for this.
    It is spelled k.a.y.f.a.b.e.

  7. Cometowin2 Says:

And another one that Licht paid the big bucks too. Hope this doesn’t become a mistake like Zyan!

  8. Sal Volatile Says:

    S.u.s.p.e.n.s.i.o.n. o.f. d.i.s.b.e.l.i.e.f.

I believe many Bucs fans suffer from the above.

Coaching matters. So does bad coaching. No matter.

Maybe it’s time to blow it all up.

  10. Ga.GreginRH Says:

    Trash team

  11. FortMyersDave Says:

Fire Bowles. At least the Lightning won this weekend and both USF bball teams. They afe worth watching now, not the Todd Bowles’ clown show.

  12. UGotRobbed Says:

Blah, blah, blah…the entire coaching staff needs to be fired!

  13. Gofortheface30 Says:

Meanwhile the jaguars are turning in to a juggernaut. The Jaguars. Merry Christmas

  14. Cometowin2 Says:

That was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen an offensive lineman have. Almost like he tried…

  15. Rod Munch Says:

For all the whining about everyone else, the fact is, if Baker was merely a middling QB the last three weeks, the Bucs win all three games.

That is what is lost in blaming everyone else but Baker.

The Saints game, he was awful, throws for 122 yards, INT, on 4th and 4 with the game on the line, he throws it at Otton’s feet costing him the 1st down. Vs the Falcons, he throws one of the worst INT’s of all time, misses a wide open e2 to run out the clock and win the game. Then this week, in FG range, game on the line, Baker throws another INT.

Seriously, if 2014 Mike Glennon had started the last three games, he’d have won all three. That’s how bad Baker has been with 1st place on the line.

If he doesn’t snap out of it, doesn’t catch on fire, then all is lost.

Still, thanks to being in the NFC South, he still will have two more changes to heat up.

But stop blaming everyone but Baker, just an average competent QB wins these last three games.

    Gotta agree with Rod.

We shot ourselves in the foot. Actually they were aiming for their temples but missed!

The offense was just a fun team to watch last year. It’s why everyone is saying 30+ points a game. Even added more WRs in the draft thinking how great it was going to be. Hovering around 20 points is a regression. When I try to pinpoint the problem first thing I think about is Grizz because it’s the only thing different. Is Cody Mauch that much of a game changer or Ben? Some mentioned Todd started manipulating things over there. To me it seems something happened around the Detroit/bye. Just a lot of losing started after a great start to the season. It’s just contagious losing everywhere.

  20. Saskbucs Says:

Rod … no one can take you seriously about Baker now because you have railed on him for the last 2 years and he has had great stretches of ball. If you would have kept you mouth shut while he was playing decent and helping win games, maybe someone would read your comments.

Instead you have no credibility. You just look like a biased hater.

  21. Adrnagy Says:

It’s that big helmet fault. Too heavy.

  22. Winny Testaverde Says:

But…but Hot Rod Mulch said in a previous comment section that he’s the best Buc lineman. Get the f’ outta here with that nonsense. Goedeke stinking up the joint makes me a “Baker Boi”…I get it.

  23. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Yeah, it’s the same thing that happened at the midway point the last two seasons. Baker is highly inconsistent and goes into slumps. In 2023, he finally broke out of it with 4 games left. Last year he broke out of it after the bye, but it was also helped by facing a bunch of bad teams with terrible defenses. This year, we keep waiting for Baker to snap out of it, and he hasn’t.

Remarkably, because it’s the NFC South, he still has a chance to snap out of it. However time is running out. But, again, if he suddenly heats up, the Bucs can outscore anyone. IF he even shows up this year when it matters, time is running out.

  25. Bucs4ever Says:

It starts from the top down.

    Head Coach

    OC

    Fix those,and the roster changes

    ———-

Show me when I railed on him when he’s played great?

No the thing is I call him out when it plays like s— and I mocked you idiots chanting MVP in week 6, pointing out that being MVP in week 16 is what matters.

Well, this was week 16, and Baker just lost the game, again. Three in a row.

  27. Bucs4ever Says:

At the end of this fiasco, it will come out that Baker Mayfield was more seriously injured than anyone let on.

The problem is that his style of playing = injury.
    No big extension.

  28. Alanbucsfan Says:

Right now, Mayfield is the worst QB in the NFC South- that’s right, Shough threw for 300 yards today and the Saints have won their last 3 games.

  29. Boltsfan17 Says:

Baker is not a franchise QB. Never was and never will be. He’s as much of a problem as this USFL quality OL.

  30. Nutterbuccer Says:

This team sucks. Pissed away a 6-2 start pathetic

  31. Maggs Says:

You’re still missing a critical article. What was Dean doing just before half to allow someone to get behind him? That play can never happen. No timeouts and 17 seconds. Let them catch the ball in play

    ————-

    Absolutely true.

BUT, with a highly inconsistent QB like Baker, you can get breakout games out of the blue. So he’s still got a chance to suddenly get hot.

I wish people said he was playing for job, if he thought that, I think we’d actually see him focused and at his best. Instead all the boot lickers will just keep telling him he’s great, nothing is his fault, go make some more commercials and the Bucs will lose out.

    BUT, maybe not.

  33. Inwoodjeremy Says:

    Rod – Good point.

You’re still missing a critical article. What was Dean doing just before half to allow someone to get behind him?

    ———-

Yeah, impossible to come back from a 3-point half-time deficit.

Also it was a zero blitz, for some dumb reason. I mean Bowles played his typical super soft zone to let the Panthers move right down the field with zero effort to stop them, then suddenly, when he’s already conceded the 3 points, he goes zero blitz – I mean it makes zero sense. You do that to create a sack, and even if they get the sack, the Panthers are still in FG range. Just a dump call.

As for Dean, when you go zero blitz it’s a high risk, high reward play – and they got burned. I’d have had no issues if they had done it early in the drive, but once they already let them move at will, with only 12 seconds left, a just incredibly stupid call.

To claim Dean is a bum because he gets beat one-on-one is just stupid. That is what happens most of the time in the NFL if the QB has time to throw the ball.

Joe is running short on material its just a bad team Joe, start writing about the draft and potential replacement for coaching staff

  36. Bucmeup Says:

None of these dudes are locked in which points to management (coaching)

  37. JohnnyGee Says:

Bucs aren’t making winning plays when the time comes. They are making too many mistakes after 15 games.

  38. Tony1775 Says:

Bowles should have been fired after the Rams 2021 playoff loss.

  39. HeavyE Says:

We have six captains on this team, and I never see any captain, act like a captain on the field of play, I don’t care what happens in the locker room, because how is that working out for us, no one ever gets in the face of the ones that are slacking, to improve there play on the field, EVERY ONE IS SO SOFT ON THIS TEAM, including players and coaches, it’s EMBARRASSING!

  40. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Ride that Baker hard Rod Munch! Keep up the good work!

  41. Aqualung Says:

    Tony1775 has it right.

  42. ChiBuc Says:

JL, who’s next for a big payday? Mayfield and Kancey seem like perfect candidates for JL to tie up a large chunk of cap in. Fire Jason, and a new GM shuffle this sh!t show

  43. Sly Pirate Says:

He had a concussion for 5 weeks last year. I think it was a mistake for him to return and a bigger mistake to sign him for a long-term deal.

  44. Bobby M. Says:

Team as a whole lacks discipline and more importantly….accountability. Bowles is too loyal to everyone but the fans. He won’t call anyone out, won’t fire or bench anyone….it’s every week a different player suddenly has the worst week ever. At some point change starts at the top.

  45. Adrnagy Says:

Yes we can over come 1 and 15. With the wr we have and Bucky.
Run run run run no !

  46. Mac Says:

Everyone we sign to big money extensions minus Evans seems to turn to crap. Maybe Vea too but everyone else doesn’t pan out. It must be a Tampa curse or something.

  47. Yeahmetoo Says:

Its Not one area thats bad. Its practically everything about them. From qb play
To incompetent coaching. The oline and dline are awful. The defensive backfield
May be the worst in the league and we have the highest paid safety in the NFL.
There is no easy fix here. There have been so many misses on draft picks
These past 3 or 4 years. Its all catching up and looking bleak.

  48. C-spann4 Says:

Rod is right about Baker. Sure I want him to do well but the facts are he is not a franchise level QB. He is a popular Gardner Minshew (and even he may be better than Bake). The OC is terrible, the Bucs have all this money tied up in the WR room and they go with a conservative game plan, make it make sense! Can’t wait to see the headline that Bowels is fired. Also wouldn’t be mad if Licht is gone too!

  49. Frank Pillow Says:

There’s zero accountability on this team. None. Zilch. You can be board and still play. You can loaf and still play. You can run poor routes and still play. You can miss tackles, blow assignments and just go through the motions—and still play. You can persistently have lousy special teams and still be employed. Only here. Other teams/organizations that win, own their stuff. They make tough choices. Not us. We make excuses. We pat ourselves on the back. We extend players, coaches and the GM and look the fools. Only here. Put that in the 50 year video!

  50. BucsNBucks Says:

partially agree with Rod. Baker is to blame for today’s loss & the INT’s are dragging us down. however, Baker doesn’t play defense and has not been calling the offensive plays so I think we need to look a little deeper…..
