Zyon McCollum’s Season Appears Done

December 15th, 2025

Hip injury ends season (maybe).

It appears cornerback Zyon McCollum, who Bucs coach Todd Bowles notoriously suggested suffers from boredom that affects his play, will have to find himself another hobby the next few weeks.

The Bucs today placed McCollum on injured reserve. Per NFL rules, McCollum will miss a minimum of the next four games of the current NFL season.

For McCollum to return this season, the Bucs must win a playoff game. (Joe will offer you a moment to regain composure after a hearty laugh.)

The Bucs, in turn, signed linebacker Anthony Walker (remember him?) from the Colts’ practice squad. Walker, close friend of Lavonte David, was signed by the Bucs as a free agent in the spring of 2025. It was supposed to be a battle between him and SirVocea Dennis for the starting inside linebacker gig next to David.

That never happened. Walker blew out his knee over the summer before training camp opened. He never practiced a snap of football after that injury and the Bucs released him. The Colts signed him Sept. 1.

Thank God, hope he heals, no loss at all!!!!! he was lost in space this season, you can see it in his eye!!! Go Bucs

  2. Newbie Says:

In honor of Bucs 50th season McCollum dedicated his play to honor Rod “Toast” Jones. Well done sir.

  3. CleanHouse Says:

Joe, we need you to dig and get us some real answers. Who is not doing their job during the week? Name names.

Also we want to know about all the old stuff with Freeman, Cadillac Deshaun and Swaggy.

  4. Stpetematt Says:

Narrator: and thus ends the Bucs career of Zyon McCollum. He was a case study in not reaching astronomical potential.

  5. NCbucfan Says:

If we somehow make the playoffs, I like the Seahawks matchup or even the 49ers in the wildcard. However, if we somehow get the Rams, it would be an utter embarrassment. Let that sink in, we could be 9-8, and get to host a playoff game against a 13-4 team.If that doesn’t tell you how bad this division is, I have nothing for you.

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Oof now we got Morrison starting opposite of Dean, guess who’s going to be targeted a bunch?

  7. Stpetematt Says:

I can tell Vita Vea was really pissed at Haason Reddick- so I’ll bet he’s one of the Bucs not doing his job and just passing his own statistics.

  8. Stpetematt Says:

  9. Popmike66 Says:

That’s the other thing I have questions about. Although McCollum shouldn’t be missed because he hasn’t really played the well when on the field, maybe the Bucs need to take a look at their training staff. I don’t think it’s been 1 player on offense or defense that hasn’t been injured this year and most injured multiple times. I know the NFL is a contact sport but?

  10. Todd Says:

Actually if Seahawks lose to Seattle our Bucs will only need to beat Carolina once to win the division at 8-9

  11. Tushar Garg Says:

Any word on Benjamin Morris’s return? Him and Parish were showing signs of growth playing outside.

  12. Jmarkbuc Says:

His season was done a long time ago .. he just remained on the field.

  13. Todd Says:

    Panthers lose to Seattle

  14. Jack Sparrow Says:

Maybe Zyon is really a talented player but under Bowles style of defense, a lot of talented players will look like a high school JV player.

  15. darengibo Says:

His season seemed to end when he got his bag. Hope he can find the fire again and not be DW45 2.0.

  16. DS Says:

He looked pumped to leave the falcons games also don’t laugh but the defense played better without him but we still are terrible

  17. Stpetematt Says:

If the Panthers lose to Seattle and we beat Miami but the Panthers sweep us we are out- right? Because the Panthers won the head-to-head? So, we need 1 win against the Panthers and then we beat Miami and the Panthers lose to Seattle. Finally, we can start our second string in week 18 and get healthier. Since the outcome won’t matter…

  18. Stpetematt Says:

The Bucs defense needs to WRAP UP ON TACKLES. The whole NFL seems to have stopped doing it but especially us.

  19. Brooks Says:

Played his last game as a buc. Cut him he’s terrible

  20. DJT Says:

Many people are saying Zyon McCollum was a DISASTER. Terrible coverage. Very boring! The Bucs are doing GREAT things by moving on. Next man up. We love winners, not excuses.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  21. Ugotrobbed Says:

Hummm, I question this one!? Could they be using a minor issue to hide a “benching”?? He should have already been riding the pine!

  22. Oscar Says:

If we beat the Panthers once and they lose to Seattle, I don’t think it matters whether we beat the Dolphins. In that scenario we both finish 8-9 but we win via the tie breakers. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

  23. Deuceswild78 Says:

We might as well just finish the collapse and get rid of Todd no bowles

  24. Joe Says:

Any word on Benjamin Morris’s return?

    Up to his hammy.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

You morons talking about Zyon being terrible are the same morons who blamed Winfield for “blown coverage” on the 4th down play — ie, you’re dopes that have no idea what you’re watching and what Bowles dumb scheme is asking players to do. Zyon not being out there on Thursday is literally why they lost the game, because that scrub Vildor was in there and out of position – yet you morons think Zyon is an issue because he wasn’t offsides on a FG. Just flat out stupid.

  26. Oscar Says:

I believe the win over Seattle is the tie breaker?

  27. PoopyPants Says:

Butt Munch do you live for Joe Bucs fan? Seems you comment 10-12 times per article, no job? no friends? no girl? no life? I’m predicting all 4 for you

  30. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Where the heck is Bryce Hall?!?! What do we have to lose?

  31. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Got bored and jumped into the neutral zone all by himself for a 5 yard penalty and 1st down causing a 4 point differential on the scoreboard. Trade for someone with the same salary. It doesn’t matter what position it is. Add Braswell to the trade package. If Bucs would have kept him on the sideline and fielded 10 guys instead of 11 on that play they win the game.

  32. Baker Bowl Says:

    @Rod

Both can be true. Zyon is/has been buns. Absolutely bone head and honestly benchable mistake on the field goal.

Vildor is buns. Who’s to say Zyon doesn’t make that same mistake though.

  33. FlorIdaho Buc Says:

How can he get bored when he’s constantly getting burned?!?

  34. David Says:

Of course, the joke is… It appeared to be done several weeks ago. All kidding aside, wish him well. He’s been a very good CB, was just having a down year. Hopefully there’s a speedy recovery.

  35. Newbie Says:

Rod Munch – maybe so on that particular play but Zyon “Toast” McCollum has been getting scorched all year long. I mean that dude’s a$$ is well done. While it certainly the holiday season his butt has been lit up like a Christmas tree since SEPT. EVERY TEAM HAS GONE AFTER HIM. I certainly dont lay all the blame on 27… it’s a Bowles thing for sure. But he has been terrible this season, as have just about everyone on defense. No pass rush, lack of talent, poor coaching and bad scheme = Bowles/Bucs demise.

Both can be true. Zyon is/has been buns. Absolutely bone head and honestly benchable mistake on the field goal.

    ———-

The video showed, clear as day, that Zyon jumped, then got back before the snap. To say you bench your #2 corner because of a blown call is nonsense.

As for him not making the same mistake – again – people have no idea what they’re watching. They keep thinking Zyon has played poorly and got burnt, and when I’ve seen people point out plays, they literally, again, have no idea what they’re watching – and they’d point to plays where Zyon is in zone and covering his area, and people think he’s beat because he’s handing a guy off in coverage.

  37. MikeBuc Says:

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Zyon being injured means Bowles will play even more super soft zone, that’s how he responds to every single injury, he gets softer and more predictable. The only possible offset is if he realizes, finally, and he breaks tendencies, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

In any case, if you’re a betting man, put a mortgage payment on the over each of the next 3 weeks on Young and Tua. Short of weather, seems like one of the surest shots you’ll ever get.

  39. Outrigger Says:

Hope he heals up but don’t want him back. Trade him for a 5-7th rounder if you can find a sucker to take him and his ridiculous contract

  40. Rod Munch Says:

MikeBuc – I get it buddy, you think words hurt. Well let me share this little rhyme with you that they used to teach us in school…

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.

It’s true! Go look in the mirror and yell “IM AN IDIOT” in the mirror. You’ll notice that nothing happens. Now go shove your hand in a running lawn mower blade – OUCH, big mistake, that certainly does hurt.

    See the difference, kiddo?

  41. Baker Bowl Says:

    @Rod

I agree, it’s tough to assess sometimes when a guy is in zone and handing an assignment off. Regardless, Zyon hasn’t been good.

Yes, mental mistakes, made at the highest level, by the highest paid players, should be punished. 0 blocked kicks in how long, why ON EARTH is he jumping. Bonehead. Ridiculous. Almost like he’s not fully there mentally (e.g ‘bored’)

Back to his zone play. I see him handing off players… to no one. It’s like he’s not aware of the space around him/other assignments. He looks lost A LOT.

  42. PoopyPants Says:

This is the 50th anniversary of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one would think the team and the whole organization would be all in on winning. Sadly, there is a rot that is very slowly revealing itself. I wonder what the Glazers think of this selfish, self-centered bunch of millionaires called football players.

No worries at all. Todd Bowles will just get better.

He’s an absolute guru when it comes to pass defense.

There should already be a solid gold statue of him outside the stadium.

No team has ever been able to crack his secret code of brilliance.

Every Sunday I tune in to see his championship caliber scheme in action.

  52. keydoc Says:

since his injury, he played scared and did not embrace contact or have the “pop” in his tackling; clearly he was not close to 100% after his surgery,

    ————-

But that’s scheme – that’s what I mean. It looks like he’s handing off to no one, yet on the ALL22, you see that stuff all the time with everyone. It’s not a mistake or being lazy or uninterested, it’s the beyond stupid scheme. It has players often stand around and wait for something to happen – of half cover someone but also have to run back to their starting position, leaving huge holes. Back in the glory days of the ALL-TIME great Bucs defenses of the late 90s and early 00s, the Bucs also ran a zone, and it was a tight active zone with a lot of movement — Bowles runs the complete opposite of that and makes pretty much everyone look terrible, from DB’s to EDGE rushers. How many times does Yaya get to the QB only for the QB to have someone wide open to throw to the second they feel pressure. That’s the scheme, and it’s all about Bowles being more afraid of failure than achieving success.

    ——–

Well duh, Davis is one of the better corners in the NFL and was certainly the #1 on the Bucs.

If he kept his mouth shut and didn’t call out Bowles for running this stupid zone garbage and wasting his skills, he’d still be here. Instead he was traded away to Detroit, who went 15-2, and now he’s with the Pats who are 11-3.

  55. PoopyPants Says:

No one cares what you think Butt Munch posting from Mommies garage

  56. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Addition by subtraction. Yes, the scheme sucks but so does the player. Zyon was at his best, just a guy. Licht really screwed up giving him $$$.

  57. Mach Says:

The bucs seriously need to flip their training staff. Too many injuries each year, well above league average and sems to only be getting worse. Its time to get some fresh thinking into that training room

  58. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

Rod – you often have good comments with intelligent reviews of All 22, but then call some posters morons or stupid, which is childish. You would earn much more respect here if you stayed more professional and adult. Not criticizing, just pointing it out.

I would doubt many D players are happy with Bowles scheme as it has been functioning poorly for quite some time.

  59. Pewter Power Says:

Oh well I guess Zyon is the next man up to get the Carlton Davis Jamel Dean treatment from bucs fans. I bet our “average” corners will look like all stars when they play for another head coach

  60. Rick Says:

When you can’t get to the QB with 4, or even in some cases 5, you end up with corners playing on an island and they get exposed. So what Zyon got toasted on an island by Davante Adams. Everyone does. The people making comments about him must not have watched Vildor. We better get Parrish up to speed to play outside fast and hopefully when Tykee comes back you let him or Izien play nickel or even Vildor. I am not convinced that you can ever count on Dean or Morrison for a full game.

  61. jw94buc Says:

I’m pretty sure I could defend better than Zyon. No football experience lol

    Cut him.

  70. NCbucfan Says:

Johnny, genius Licht extended him to a 48 mil contract beginning of the season.

  71. Stpetematt Says:

I think the secret part of the formula we are missing for dominant zone defenses is fast pursuit great tackling and covering linebackers (like Derrick Brooks) and safeties. Without those, there’s too many people open in the middle too often. That’s how tight ends destroy cover 2- you have to have speedy good covering linebackers or a TE runs along the edges of the zones and is frequently wide open. I think it’s also the key to Bowles defense working much better.
Rod I agree with you on Zyon. He has near limitless potential but he’s a bit of a head case. Not sure how you get great play out of someone like that. Maybe the Bucs need a team psychiatrist? lol!

  72. buccintimeforchanges Says:

how do you sell this mess to the fans again next year? Even if we backdoor and win the division….who cares? We will get walked in round 1 of the playoffs.

No way can the Glazers bring Todd & Jason back. The team is full of holes. Guys are getting old.

I’ll say this…Todd and Jason return? We bottom out at 5-12 next yr.

    Tickets will be dirt cheap.

  73. 941bucsfan Says:

What I dont understand about bucs fans is they say, reddick, sirvocea, zyon, yaya, lavonte washed, morrison all trash… but in the same breath say we have the talent to win hahaha. Make it make sense

  74. Defense Rules Says:

Good article, lots of comments. But after reading all of that, I still have one question:

WHAT REASON DID THE BUCS GIVE FOR PLACING MCCOLLUM ON THE IR LIST?

I saw earlier in the season where he had a bum thumb, but I think that was about it. THAT wouldn’t land him on IR. What’s going on with McCollum that’s not being told?

  75. Stpetematt Says:

We certainly have astonishing talent on offense. What we have on offense is a huge drop off in talent from starter to backup. We also have a lot of individually talented players on defense. We are definitely missing Kancey. I think we have a little more consistent pressure when he is back.
Atlanta beats us a lot because their offensive line is really, really strong and we get no pressure on Cousins most of the time. And he’s excellent against the blitz so it’s an inherently tough matchup. To beat Cousins you really need pressure with 4 consistently.

  76. Stpetematt Says:

    It said hip injury DR

  77. Defense Rules Says:

And glad to have Anthony Walker back on the team. I had high hopes for him when Training Camp started, then poof, he was gone because of an injury. He’s not a superstar, but he’s got 8 years of pretty good experience, much of it as a MLB. His career average of allowing 74.9% completions isn’t awesome, but it beats Dennis’ 82.9% and even LVD’s 76.3% and Devin White’s 77.0% career averages.

  78. Defense Rules Says:

Thanks StPeteMatt. I looked at Zion’s photo but never read the caption. Now I’m wondering how long that’s been bothering him. Makes me wonder if that’s why he’s been playing so far off?

  79. Stpetematt Says:

Walker could help us some. Especially if he wraps up and tackles and isn’t too slow…

    ————————-
Idk I have the opposite feeling. I think the majority of these guys have a lot of respect for Bowles’s defense, and that seems to be the consensus when I see other players, on other teams, give comments about Bowles and his D.

I think what we’re seeing is these guys beating themselves up for not being able to fully execute the defense. It’s the same feeling as letting someone down you respect. To me, my eyes say it’s part effort (some players) and part talent (LVd cannot cover anymore, he’s too slow, etc)

  82. Stpetematt Says:

I wonder if Bowles didn’t want to bench him so told him he could fake an injury to save face in the future?

  83. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Pull a Remember the Titans , “ G Greene and Egbuka your playing corner and JMac , your at safety “

  84. Bartow Buc Says:

So. a question is whether the Buccaneers can defeat the Panthers at home? Sure they can !! Why ? Two starters added to the offense, ME 13, and Jalen McMillan. With one game under their belt, and Baker Mayfield more rested, the offense is going to be even more productive than it was against the falcons.
I believe Coach Bowles will rally the defense to play better. How much better? We will just have to wait and see. If JPP plays, well let’s just say I guarantee you Bryce Young will feel it.

    Go Bucs !!

Also asking any defense in 2025 to hold opponents to 18 points or less a game is asking a lot, I could see how that can lead to all sorts of problems as they press to try to cover for the offense.

But I agree, I have all the talent in the world and I’m clearly the best poster ever when I put in the effort. But like Zyon, I suffer from bouts of boredom and will lash out at the dullards that cause it. It’s my only weakness as a human – although many would say it’s my best quality.

Notwithstanding Baker’s injuries, he has thrown for more TD’s in the last 2 years than any NFL QB with the exception of Goff. Nothing wrong with my comprehension, circling the wagons is a metaphor for Munch protecting his pal Zyon.

Oh no, Baker Boi on Baker Boi violence breaking out!

Also, how in the world are the Bucs a 3.5 point favorite over the Panthers? Even if the Bucs win, I’d think it would be 3 points at the most. Maybe the idea is that Evans and McMillan getting another week, and perhaps Vegas joins me in thinking Baker finally has a breakout game. I don’t know, but I know I would not take that bet.

  105. Jameis Says:

Walking definition of mid. 48-50 out of 100 ranking.

  106. Rod Munch Says:

Going through the various playoff scenarios, and the Bucs can in theory still get 3rd place in the NFC – would require the Bucs winning out, and the Eagles losing out. Unlikely, obviously, but not impossible.

If the Bucs make the playoffs, from every single scenario I see, they’d face an NFC West opponent. The Bucs were 3-1 this year vs that division.

So the most dreaded match-up in my mind, by far, would be the Rams. The Bucs never, ever, never, ever ever win that match-up when it matters. At the same time, you have the rule of thumb that says almost never does a team get blown out twice in the same season by the same team. Also, if you buy the idea of how hard it is to beat a non-division opponent twice in the same season, you’d want the Rams. But you’d have to have something wrong with you to want the Rams, since, see above, the Bucs never in all their history win that game.

Out of Seattle and San Fran, I know which I’d prefer, and it’s not the Seahawks. But any of the three teams is a tough match-up, but the 49ers seem like the one the Bucs would have the best chance against, but I assume they’d home underdogs vs any of the three.

I certainly don’t know the facts of Zyon’s injury. I did however see the video of him walking through the tunnel on his way to the locker room. As he walked past there was a clear view of his hips from 10 feet or so away as he took 2 or 3 strides and he appeared to be walking briskly, normally and no discomfort.

  108. Sal Volatile Says:

Having not watched or listened to the game I did read about Zyon’s boneheaded (?) offsides penalty that was game impacting. Could their be a correlation between the penalty and the “injury” and subsequent IR status ? If so, that would most certainly qualify as holding a player accountable but he still gets paid.

Darn it ! The algo won’t let me post a link to Psychology Today narcissism test for rod.

  110. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Zion was playing decent the first 3 games. After that, QBs started avoiding him and throwing at Morrison. Todd thought in game was the best time for his training that he missed preseason. I’m guessing that’s what caused the “boredom.” I’m certainly not defending him. He’s supposed to be a professional and be able to handle it. It went to his head and he never recovered.

Now, as far as the offense…..they don’t get open because they practice against Todd’s defensive scheme and get fooled into thinking they can get open easily. They can’t handle it when someone actually plays defense against them.

  111. Stanglassman Says:

You would think that an article about a player being placed on IR would mention what kind of injury he had. During the game they speculated that it was his hip. Maybe a hip pointer? Whatever that is.

  112. Big Red Says:

To the people who are glad he’s out, wait until you realize he was easily our 2nd best CB…

  113. Chuckys Bucs Says:

Trade him for a 6th rounder. One of the guys just collecting a a paycheck.

  114. BucU Says:

2025 Season Totals (through Week 15/16, as of late Dec 2025):
    Total Tackles: 65 (45 Solo, 20 Assisted)
    Passes Defended (PD): 6
    Interceptions (INT): 1 (19 yards)
    Tackles for Loss (TFL): 2
    Sacks: 0
    Fumble Recoveries/Forced Fumbles: 0

  115. DD Says:

Zyon is in for a rude awakening if the Glazers decide to fire Bowles and get a guy like Dan Campbell or Mike Vrabel. From having a good friend to a mean, grind it out with blood kinda guy will have him and many others either man up, or quit the team.

  116. Eckwood Says:

He’s not a bad player , he just can’t mentally handle his contract . I think the Bucs need professional private mentors for these young guys in Tampa . So Ho , downtown, ybor, M Venus, Doll H etc . It’s allot to handle without good role models .
BTW , can Morrison make it start to finish in an NFL game without injury ??

Note to Trainers !! Micro manage all your players below 10 percent body fat for hydration . Fluid is the body’s lubricant, these physics look great, but it’s like machinery with no oil grease. What do you think leather preservative is ? It’s liquid !! Super Stretching, Warming Up and I V ‘s will drop your injuries by a large margin . Morrison probably has half the available fluid as Lavonte D …………… doesn’t take much sweating for him to be dehydrated.

  117. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Don’t want to see Rams again. Todd owes them one for accepting mercy in the 2nd quarter to save embarrassment.
