Losing to a crap team at home in back-to-back weeks.
That’s our beloved Buccaneers.
Firepower returned to the Bucs offense tonight against the Falcons. How refreshing! The Bucs scored 28 points and still left a load of points on the field.
And it didn’t matter.
Mike Evans sure looked like a guy who wants to play next year — and a guy the Bucs will beg to play his 13th season. Evans was dominant, drawing penalties and ripping off 132 yards on 6 catches. His surgically-repaired collarbone held up to big hits. And man, did Evans show the world how much he was missed.
And it didn’t matter.
The Bucs’ run game was solid and diverse, and Baker Mayfield was just ok, eating too many snaps and throwing a horrible interception. Mayfield did throw his share of darts but his accuracy was shaky. At least the offense looked in rhythm for a short stretch of time.
Jalen McMillan? Joe was glad to see him get the start and the Bucs threw to him over the middle, which was the tell to Joe that McMillan really is considered healthy and fearless after breaking his neck in August.
And it didn’t matter.
So the Bucs are now 7-7 and on a horrible skid after a 5-1 start. Tampa Bay now has 10 days rest to take on Carolina (7-6) in Charlotte.
The Bucs defense? It remains ugly. Again, the Bucs delievered broken down Kirk Cousins’ his best game of the season — 373 yards passing and 3 touchdowns.
Major love for Christian Izien’s forced fumble in the second half. What a huge play. A late strip-sack by Haason Reddick was key to the Bucs almost closing out the game. But those plays couldn’t overcome the leaky defense that simply does not work.
The Bucs led by 14 points against a bad Falcons team in the fourth quarter. Rather then close the game out, they played with fire and got burned against a sloppy 19-penalty opponent that tried all night to give the game away.
Rock bottom? It’s not far off.

I am finding it very frustrating that everyone is finally, just now, coming to the realization that Todd Bowles has to go. The fact that Bowles has had to go and has been holding this team back has been true, and I would argue obvious, for years. It was especially true last season, before the playoff loss to Washington and before Liam Coen had any official head coaching interviews. Many of us were screaming from the rooftops that if this team was actually serious about taking the next step and going from an average team that beats up on the worst division in football to a true Super Bowl contender, that we would have to promote Liam Coen to head coach and move on from Bowles. The Bucs organization, and a seeming majority of the fanbase, was far too complacent with the status quo to make this move. That complacency may very well have set this franchise back a decade.
Even if it wasn’t an outright firing, but something where Bowles could have moved into a front office role with grace, I would have been very happy. Todd Bowles seems like a great guy, and he deserves a lot of credit for how he handled the transitions from Arians to him and Brady to uncertainty at the QB position. It is obvious that the players respect him and that he has built/maintained a good culture here in Tampa, and that should not be overlooked. Although culture is important for a football team, it does not justify Todd Bowles’ glaring and obvious shortcomings as a head coach. The clock management gaffes, the cowardice punts, consistently being out coached and unprepared against the leagues’s best teams. His flaws are constant, he seemingly never learns or adapts. The great coaches in the NFL are the ones that dig into the rulebook to give their team any leg up they can, they are the ones who obsess over clock management situations to be able to capitalize on every opportunity they can in a game. Great coaches find ways to win on the margins, it’s crucial in a league with as much parity as the NFL. Todd Bowles’ Bucs have consistently lost on the margins whenever they face a competent opponent.
Bowles’ in game decision meltdowns are too many to count but here are a couple that highlight why a Todd Bowles led football team will never win (or come that close to) a Super Bowl: just a couple of weeks ago against the Bills. The inexplicable decision to punt on 4th and 2 down 3 when neither defense in the game could get a second half stop to save their lives. We punted the ball away and Baker never had it back in a one possession game again. Bowles essentially forfeited a potential game of the year with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter so he could put the game in the hands of his treasured defense (which has been horrible for the majority of his Bucs tenure). The next, and most unforgivable, blunder came in the divisional round of the playoffs in the 2023 season. Todd Bowles decided not to use his final timeout at the end of the one possession game to force a 49 yard field goal attempt with 30 seconds left. Instead he just… let the clock run out on the Bucs season… IN A PLAYOFF GAME. I could go on about this specific decision forever, but any NFL head coach should move heaven and earth to get the ball back in a one possession game even if it’s with one second left from your own one yard line. That should be the case for a regular season game… let alone THE DIVISIONAL ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS. You will never win a Super Bowl with a coach like that calling the shots, that should have been obvious to everyone involved before Liam Coen was even hired by the Bucs.
So here we are, Liam Coen is 9-5 in Jacksonville in sole possession of the division lead and the Bucs are imploding after a 6-2 start. It looks more likely every week that we will blow the division to the Panthers and Dave Canales (another former Bucs OC who’s a better head coach than Bowles), and I can’t help myself from hoping that it happens. It seems like it will be the only thing that will force the Glazers to fire Bowles, and nothing matters for this team until he is fired. But even if we fire Bowles now, I am just too angry about the unforced error of waiting a year too long to do it to be excited about who we hire. We already had the right guy for the job in the building. We could have paired Baker Mayfield with a play caller that got the most out of him for the rest of his career. It’s worth noting that the Bucs did realize how important Coen was to the team’s success, they offered to pay him more than Bowles to stay as the OC (what does that make Bowles? A motivational cheerleader?). But we all know how that went down at the end, the manner in which Coen left was dishonorable but I don’t blame him for not passing up the opportunity to be a head coach after he earned it.
The decay and collapse of the Bucs this season isn’t all on Bowles, Jason Licht deserves some of the blame, but given the same players and injuries there is no doubt in my mind that a Liam Coen led Bucs team would be competing for the #1 seed in the NFC right now. This is not hindsight, this was plainly obvious over a year ago to many of us. The 2020s have been so much fun as a Bucs fan, probably the high water mark of the franchise to date, but I fear that complacency over the last couple years has doomed us to another dark age.

Evans and David are both done you can tell in their body language. The whole coaching staff needs to go if we can find a good HC, OC, and DC. I like Licht but I also feel his lack of moves is a part of this too. You can’t tell me there weren’t trade partners because plenty of players were moved. Unfortunately Bowles is likely safe until the end of the season. I mean who on this current coaching staff looks worthy of taking over as an interim HC? Had this been last season when we still had Coen in house then Todd may have been sleeping very uneasy tonight, but with this crew he almost assuredly gets three more games to try to save his career in Tampa (if he manages to slide into the playoffs by some accidental miracle). Arians is the only guy we have who has any head coaching pedigree, and he doesn’t seem to want to do much hands on work for the Bucs anymore. Good luck fellow Bucs fans…the offense is shoring a few signs of being NFL caliber, but the defense has hit rock bottom!

If anyone still supports this absolute tool of a head coach, I don’t know what to tell you. Look around the league. There are rosters that have way more holes and weaknesses than the Buccaneers, yet here we sit, unable to beat a 2-win team and follow *that* up in an almost ‘must win’ game with a loss to a team that committed 19 penalties in a single game of football.
I just don’t know what to say any more. I love the Bucs but I cannot keep watching this. It’s too frustrating. It’s too painful.

Rod you are wrong about the defense, the Bucs defense SUCKS 100% because they cannot generate pressure on the QB. You CANNOT play a soft zone and allow ANY NFL QB time to throw, they will eat you alive….even Baker Mayfield would torch a team who did that. Todd BOWELS does that. The Bucs offense must score 28 points in order to only lose by 1 point. Baker did throw an unforgivable INT and the Bucs players on DEFESNE were lazy trying to recover a fumble. THEY are soft, especially on defense, and it all starts with their coach.

I’m not defending Baker Mayfield. If anything, I’m defending Jameis Winston. He has always been underrated and, statistically, he’s just as good a quarterback as Baker. In fact, I believe he may have performed better than Baker did in Tampa last year on that same team…
That said, I acknowledge that Baker has struggled and regressed significantly. While it’s understandable that his wife is going through a difficult pregnancy and that he’s been extremely tired, stressed, and Injured himself at some point, a professional must perform and stop making excuses.

ill be a contrarian i think todd isnt without blame it all falls on the coach but at somepoint we have to acknowledge the team cant get pressure at the line of scrimmage and our linebackers are just not playing good. the offense sputtered and baker threw a costly pick. jamel dean got bailed out by a drop. josh grizzard ran the ball up the middle for a 4 yard loss baker throws an incompletion and than gets sacked. cousins fumbles and the bucs recover but the refs decide that calling it a tie which i dont think anyone has seen before happens the falcons march down the field and the rest is history. bowles is not very popular right now but i blame the team too

This is a terrible take. There were at least two if not three games that Jameis threw an INT or pick-6 on the final drive of a game in that 30-for-30 year.
Baker needs to play better, but comparing the INT today to what Jameis threw is asinine (they were keying-in on Bryant waaaaay too much, giving a good defensive coordinator an opportunity for a take-away and, when he had the chance, Alford made a good play).
I think a good chunk of Baker’s issues are related to the personnel inconsistency over the year, combined with below average O-line play and terrible play-calling (aside from maybe two drives).

Well Baker did better last year, but certainly not in 2023, and certainly not this year. Additionally Winston was going against HOF’er Drew Brees, HOF’er Matt Ryan, and ALL-PRO Cam Newton – not against the trash QBs that Baker is going against. Had Winston been here still, with this offense, he’d be winning the NFC South every year as well – just by showing up, just like Baker had the previous 2 years.

But with that said…. all of you are being played sooooo badly, just as have I have
been. Everything, and I mean everything, that goes on in the NFL is to control your emotions and if you think about what I am saying, you will know it to be truth.
How often do you feel bad after a loss? Do you get angry? Do you feel a sadness that doesn’t make sense? Do you start blaming players on the team even though you don’t play a down in the NFL?
On the other side, how do you feel after a win? Way too excited? On top of the world? Did you play on the deciding drive to make the game winning catch? Ask yourself why YOU feel like you won. We all feel like that.
I have arrived at the point where I am ambivalent about a win or a loss. It doesn’t change my life situation.. not one bit.
With that said, I can watch the game more objectively. Bowles should go as head coach. It is obvious that the team is not playing to its potential and that reflects on leadership.
I have been a fan of the Bucs since I was a young boy and remember the NFC championship game in 1979.
What is happening right now is a disgrace to the organization and starts with the top. Not rocket science.

Baker WAS on the field the next drive when he can put the game away, and instead misses a throw and takes a sack and the Bucs punt it away, when everyone in the world knew if the Bucs punted, they were losing that game.
If Baker does his job, the defense, which is awful, isn’t on the field to lose the game.

I’m not defending Baker. He missed several passes, held the ball way too long, and threw a costly pick that more than likely cost us the game. He’s looked bad for several weeks. I’ve heard he may be injured. If so he shouldn’t be playing. But honestly would you rather have him or Bridgewater playing? Don’t bring up Trask. He’s no longer on the team, and I believe it was a mistake getting rid of him. Whoever made that decision should face cosequences.
What I’m saying is the defense is the main problem with this team plain and simple. Cousins threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns, and was sacked once. We can’t get any pressure on the quarterback and insist on playing 10 yards off the receivers. Bowles entire defense relies on pressuring the quarterback, and he nsists edge rushers are not important. His defense is putrid. If you score 28 points at home that should be enough to win the game. I knew we lost when we gave the ball back to them. Can anyone honestly say they believed we would stop them? If so, you must be watching a different team than me. Done ranting for the night. BM threw an interception and the timing was really bad but that’s not the only thing that lost us the game. If all of us know the defense can’t get a stop then the players on the team also know that. This causes players to try and force things. This is the same thing that happened to Winston when he was here. Our team sucked so he felt he had to try and win the game on his own.
They showed during the game BM over the past three seasons was 2nd in passing yards and 3rd in TDs. He is tied for 5th in TDs this season with only 7 INTs. His completion percentage is down but still above 60% and even if he was up around 70% that would only equal like 2-3 more passes per game. 2-3 more passes per game would only add another 18-20 yards of offense.
Make sure you know what you are wanting to throw out before you toss it. The same players last year with a different OC were much better. The problems here are caused by coaching.

Finally the team started kicking into the end zone on kickoffs to cover up special teams weakness. Ebuka, Evens and Irving cannot fix everythimg. Defense is broken. I understand injuries. But maybe we regroup/re-tool for next year? Unless we somehow beat Carolina……twice??? 🙏
