Ryan Clark: The Bucs “As They Are Playing Right Now Aren’t Super Bowl Threats At All”

November 22nd, 2025

Major issues to resolve.

Former Steelers safety Ryan Clark has made a second career for himself with strong takes and quiet apologies. He seems to embrace the philosophy of yell first ask questions later.

As a result, Clark often steps in it and has a mess to clean up afterwards.

Well, Joe cannot disagree with a thing Clark said in a recent edition of “Last Take.” Clark called a spade a spade. Are the Bucs a playoff team? Clark seems to think so.

Can they win in the playoffs? Clark all but said, hell no.

“This team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as they are playing right now, aren’t Super Bowl threats at all,” Clark said. “The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when we go back throughout their schedule, you say, OK, Seattle was a quality win. We’ll say the San Francisco 49ers are a quality win.

“In the last two weeks, you played the leaders of the AFC East Division and the Patriots and the Bills — and the Bills game was actually close. Baker Mayfield did have an opportunity in the fourth quarter. A Bills team that can’t stop a nosebleed was able to get the football back to Josh Allen.

“Obviously, Josh Allen has one of those superhuman days, but if [the Bucs] don’t get people back healthy, if Todd Bowles defensively can’t figure out a way to stop the big play, this team can’t compete with the top of the NFC.”

The former Super Bowl-winning defensive back was revolted by how the Bucs played such a matador defense against New England and Buffalo.

“It wasn’t just Drake Maye to Kyle Williams, Drake Maye to Stefon Diggs, Drake Maye to Mack Hollins,” Smith said. “It was last week with Keon Coleman on the sideline; Josh Allen to every damn body.”

Clark noted there is just no way a defense like the Bucs put on the field the past two weeks is going to slow playoff teams.

“And so if they don’t figure out a way to stop people and give Baker Mayfield more help offensively, when you get some people back healthy, this team will be home early in the playoffs like we’ve seen them the last few years,” Clark said.

Joe doesn’t know how anyone who isn’t playing with pom-poms and wearing a skirt can come up with a winning formula when a team is struggling to pass and is downright a complete sieve on defense.

Since the bye, touchdowns scored against the Bucs defense have been from an average of 33 yards away from the end zone. That’s sickening.

The way the defense is playing, Joe isn’t convinced the Bucs can make the playoffs. It’s that bad.

  1. Todd Says:

It was Jason Licht that told everybody that he had the team to win it all by making no moves before the trade deadline.

How the F is that going for you Jason??????????????????

  2. Permanently Moderated Says:

    He speaks the truth, unfortunately.

  3. JohnQCitizen Says:

Is he considered a profit or something? My Scottish Terrier can see what’s going on with the Bucs. What we need is a coach.

  4. Deeboooo Says:

Or Jason thought that no trade could put this team over the edge and decided to roll with what we have

  5. Todd Says:

Sorry Q but we are woefully short of talent at many key positions on Defense.

  6. Jmarkbuc Says:

    No$hit Sherlock

  7. Nick2 Says:

The sad thing is, it’s not the offense with all their injuries. It’s once again the annual bowles defensive collapse. Please Glazers see this and give us a new head coach.

  8. Nick2 Says:

This defense is obviously too complicated for even the best of players. Then dropping defensive edge rushers into coverage is completely insane. Why Todd doesn’t see this and make corrections to his scheme is beyond me. Fire that couch.

  9. Todd Says:

Show me a coach with no effective edge rush,no effective outside or mike linebacker that can put a top tier defense on the field.

  10. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

No argument here, injuries, crap execution, not being able to rely on all 3 phases to play clean, disciplined football over the course of a single game. Plenty of ball left to be played, but I’m kind of anxious to see what this team does with this adversity moving forward.

  11. Bee Says:

This statement has been true for the past, what, 4 seasons. The combo of Bowles and Baker won’t win a chip for the Bucs. And it’s not because Baker is bad, but Baker isn’t elite and can’t take over a games versus top teams consistently. Especially in the playoffs when it matters most. With guys out Baker needs to put the team on his back especially with this defense.

Bowles on the other hand just isn’t good.

  12. Stpetematt Says:

My question is if we really have the two best safeties and one of the best corners why can’t we stop what safeties are supposed to stop???

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

    JohnQ,

It all boils down to Bud Licht. He’s been tagging along for years, merely espousing culture as a way to blend in. He’s ultimately responsible for employing a head coach.

His draft picks taken as a whole are hardly impressive. There’s an urban legend that he’s some sort of genius, but that’s just not the case.

  14. PewterStiffArm Says:

Superbowl?, Superbowl? This team, after tomorrow night should concentrate on the Playoffs. It is obvious we are hitting our annual lull, although there is nothing soothing when it comes to the loosing part of this team. They never beat good teams, if they escape with a win tomorrow then we might see some positive results down the stretch. If not, we will back into pure negativity leading into the playoffs.

  15. Football 1 Says:

I must agree with Ira and Ronde. Yes Bowles needs to change up the defense because it just is not working. With that said Bowles does not have the personnel on defense to get the job done. Say what you want about Reddick, but the defense was much better when he was playing. My guess, while he was not getting that many sacks teams had to account for him allowing other guys to make plays. Bowles and Licht are responsible for missing the boat by a long shot on defensive personnel. Tell me where the talent is on defense. 3 .5 players. David gets the half. He is playing good , but no longer the difference maker. Then you have Parrish and Smith. Dean I take out as he is often hurt.
I will go 1 step further. Presently the way the defense is playing they won’t even win the division!!. Yes the defense will have to be rebuilt, especially the front 7.
It is that simple. Definitely not rocket science here.

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

Clark is the Cam Newton of Stephen A Smiths

  18. Hodad Says:

If Licht thinks the players are good enough, then the problem has to be coaching. Big game Sunday for Todd’s defense. They get rolled again, Todd will have 3 stinkers in a row. That happens not sure we pull it together down the stretch.

  19. Joe Says:

He’s ultimately responsible for employing a head coach.

It goes higher up the ladder than that.

  20. Football 1 Says:

Sorry the other person on defense is Vea.
3.5 players who actually play. The offense has 11. There you go 11 v 3.5.

  21. Vegasbuc Says:

With this coaching staff we have now the jokeoneers couldn’t beat a high school team welcome to six and five

  22. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Clark is right ,, and who knows what Sunday night will bring but it’s hard to really assess ,,,, right now we are playing against good teams w many guys out (so it looks worse) hopefully we will get some guys back in a few weeks when we play worse teams (and it will look better),,, and by playoff time we will be playing very good teams with our good team,, first game at home

  23. Beeej Says:

Licht didn’t make any trades because there are too many holes to justify throwing away draft picks. As far as Baker? SIX of eleven offensive starters are out, and he’s putting up 30

  24. Oxycondomns Says:

i guess its ok when one of these guys says it weeks after common sense saw how bad the defense was but the majority of the fans were blind to it. fans lauded the bucs defense despite giving up big plays to gibbs and st brown saying the defense played good if it weren’t for the big plays. i guess technically the bucs defense played good vs patriots and bills if it werent for the big plays.

  25. OneAndThree Says:

I’ve seen many posters on this site get moderated or banned for the opinions shared by Ryan Clark.

I guess reality has finally slapped enough people in the face.

    Just wait till Sunday night.

Going to be a bath of blood.

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Joe

It’s pretty standard that a GM hires head coaches. Input from above sure.

  27. Jeff Says:

Anyone that knows football realizes the Bucs were never a contender. Horrific defensive coaching lead by perennial fool, Todd Clueless Bowles. Todd can’t coach his way out of a paper bag. Jason Licht is a CLOWN for signing this guy to a long term deal. Clown stupid. Absolute incompetence.

  28. NCbucfan Says:

Wow, what a hot take that was Ryan. Thank you Captain Obvious.

  29. NCbucfan Says:

As bad as the defense has been lately, the Special Teams has been worse. We finally get the punt and fg protection down after week 4, and then our return coverage teams have been awful. ST teams cost us the Eagles game, and as bad as our D was last week, if we didn’t give up those 4 returns into our territory last week, we prob would’ve won that one.

  30. Bucs4Ever Says:

    Zero confidence.

That included Jason “sitting on my hands” Licht

This coaching staff and front office are still running on the Brady days.

That was A LONG TIME AGO. Brady was a winner…these bozos are clowns.

  31. Redzone Says:

Tom Brady is a true franchise changer

I can’t stand ppl defending Bowles saying the players are crap – it’s HIS TEAM! If he doesn’t think the talents good enough get involved and go to JL and say get me X, Y, Z

But Bowles has no passion creativity or balls to stand up, OR he doesn’t know what he needs to change or doesn’t care because of obstinacy and ego

In every case Todd’s handling of this D is laughable

  32. DBS Says:

Hopefully it’s a few more games and the season is over. No playoffs and they run this guy or his retirement. But don’t hire anyone from inside.

  33. Joe Says:

It’s pretty standard that a GM hires head coaches. Input from above sure.

    Each team is different.

  34. FrontFour Says:

We just don’t have the talent on D. We’ve got a couple guys playing decent ball, Parrish, T. Smith, maybe VV, Dean before he got injured, but after that – nada. When you look at all the draft hits on offense you understand why we’re so good, even with the injuries. When you look at all the draft misses on D, you should understand why the D is so bad. It’s a lack of talent folks.

  35. Destinjohnny Says:

No legit pass rusher equal no playoff wins
    It’s on the gm

  36. Obvious Says:

    Super hot take.

Regardless of how clueless he is in most situations this point is well taken.

62 year old defensive head coach that doesn’t understand basic math, defensive that gives up gigantic play after play, incompetent special teams and hurt all over the offense.

Not a good equation to beat good teams and go the distance.

  37. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles runs his defense from the secondary….contenders win in the trenches, that’s the difference. He’s always trying to use his safeties as the main focus while sending the big guys chasing WRs/RBs in coverage. It’s backwards.

  38. Todd Says:

How about posting a Jason Licht Confidence Poll?

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

If Our Bucs cannot run the table after this upcoming loss to LA? Fire Bowles and Licht. They can drink in their sorrows afterwards on Clearwater Beach.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

jmarkbuc … ‘It’s pretty standard that a GM hires head coaches. Input from above sure.’

Once BA got here, he ruled the roost. He created probably the largest NFL coaching staff, won a Super Bowl in Year 2, then did very well in Year 3.

THEN … hasta la vista. He left us the coaching staff … and put Todd Bowles in charge of it. No one argued, not publicly at least.

And yet since 2022 when Todd assumed the reins, the offensive coaching staff has almost totally turned over, THREE times at the OC level. Probably half of the defensive coaching staff has turned over. If you look at the team that Todd inherited at the end of 2021, only remaining players are Evans, Godwin, Vea, Nelson, LVD, Dean, Winfield, Wirfs. Eight out of 53 players … all the rest have turned over. THAT’S called a major rebuilding in most circles.

And in those 3 years we’ve improved record-wise each year, won the NFC South crown 3 times, and even managed to win 1 playoff game. We’ve had to deal with more Dead Money than probably any other team, but we’ve just about cleaned it all up. Starting in 2022 we’ve probably had about as many injuries as any team in the NFL.

    o 2022: Games Missed due to IR: 103 … Games Missed due to Questionable/Doubtful/Out: 78 … Total Missed: 181

    o 2023: Games Missed due to IR: 57 … Games Missed due to Questionable/Doubtful/Out: 48 … Total Missed: 105

    o 2024: Games Missed due to IR: 136 … Games Missed due to Questionable/Doubtful/Out: 68 … Total Missed: 204

o 2025 (10 games in): Games Missed due to IR: 78 … Games Missed due to Questionable/Doubtful/Out: 46 … Total Missed: 124 (projects to 211 total over 17-game season)

Bucs have lost 614 ‘man-games’ since the start of the 2022 season, and it’s continuing to steadily rise. THAT’S a whammy, but not having the $$$ to ‘buy’ better DEPTH has meant that we’re filling roster spots with guys who can be had on the cheap instead of with quality players just biding their time waiting for an opportunity to start.

SirVocea Dennis is a good example of that IMO. He’s NOT a starter, but I’m convinced he’s a valuable backup. Can think of a couple other starters I feel the same about. I still think we can finish 11-6 IF we can stay reasonably healthy the rest of the way, but like Ryan Clark said … ‘this team can’t compete with the top of the NFC’ unless we can fix this defense. Hard to imagine that happening this year though.

  41. John Says:

Completely agree with Ryan Clark…. Can anyone tell me yet a year or consecutive years that a Todd Bowles defense was a great defense or a defense to be feared? Throughout his tenure as a defensive coordinator’s first time quarterbacks have shined against his defenses and they almost always, and always have, giving up at least a few big plays per game… Frustrating just pure and simply frustrating……. That penalty last week, players coaches whatever can try to put sugar or icing on it saying that one player doesn’t cost you a game, but that 3rd and long penalty last week costed the buccaneers that game….. Frustrating absolutely frustrating

  42. Bucs4Ever Says:

the lemmings on here will give Jason super duper bestest confidence in Loser Licht. Dude is living off of Brady’s ring. If we were in any other divisions this coach and front office would have been required to WALK THE PLANK.

But we put up with mediocrity. It’s the Glazer way. We LUCKED into Brady(SF said no).

  43. Stpetematt Says:

Bucs are constantly missing 5 or 6 offensive starters every game. Thats going to change and soon. Then we will be extremely dangerous.

  44. infomeplease Says:

“If Todd Bowles defensively can’t figure out a way to stop the big play, this team can’t compete with the top of the NFC.” šŸ‘€

    Duh!!!!!!

  45. Saskbucs Says:

I am still thinking positively about this season but I had no choice but to cash my Bucs division bet. I’m sure they still win but I have lost confidence outta the bye.

Panthers have a much tougher schedule so I maybe should have stayed in but this year hasn’t seemed like the Bucs year at all!

  46. infomeplease Says:

John says, “Can anyone tell me yet a year or consecutive years that a Todd Bowles defense was a great defense or a defense to be feared? ”

The first year TB12 was here!! Just ask Patrick Mahomes how that Superbowl went ! Of course Todd Bowles had a pair of stud Edge rushers and Suh as well as VV50 in the middle.

  47. Stpetematt Says:

Yeah we constantly rushed only 4 but were in Mahomes’ face all night.

  48. Optimistic Says:

Novel concept: If you can’t defeat the better teams in the NFL, you are not a SB contender.

  49. Durango 95 Says:

Okay. Message board politics. Some want to blame the first year OC with a basket load of injuries. Some are blaming JL for not giving Bowles more players at the trade deadline.. Others like a combination of both. Lol.

    It’s fun to watch.

Of course these Bowles apologists are only trying to convince themselves. None of these are going to work. Bowles has too much fail over too long a period of time. He is “Coach .500”. That is all he has ever been. That is all that he will ever be. Despite having a ton of talent and various OC’s that he’s been hiding behind.

The Glazers blew their chance to Secure Coen 2025.

They are now on the clock again.

  50. GoneGator Says:

I’ve seen the defense look awesome @ times this year. The offense has shown its potential in a few games. We’ve been victim of bad special teams, explosive plays and a woefully inconsistent offense BUT we’re still in the hunt.

May not be a SB contender right now but we could be by the time the playoffs start.

  51. Stpetematt Says:

If we suddenly got much more from Diaby and Reddick it would make a huge difference. Historically Reddick plays better late in the season so we’ll see…

  52. Jmarkbuc Says:

    DR

Who hired BA? For what it’s worth that bloated coaching staff was ridiculous.

  53. infomeplease Says:

At the start of the season I liked the Bucs’ chances of competing for another SB appearance. The more this D gives up easy scores the more that appearance fades. I see the O coming back to life as BM6 and the O line gets healthy and as more of the other skill players become available. A win tomorrow would add some faith to the possibility. On any given day!
I’m surely not putting any money down only because I don’t trust Todd Bowles to make the right calls during games. If he doesn’t fix the D fast those hopes are lost. Also he needs to believe in BM6 and the offense at critical points in games. BM6 and the O will deliver more often then not!

  54. Texas Bucs Fan Says:

I said before first game that the Bucs would e 9 & 8 and I stand by preseason my prediction..

  55. lambchop Says:

A defensive HC has a better offense than a defense. What a waste of talent on the offensive side. He has had ample time to correct the personnel to his scheme. If we get bounced in the first playoff game, please wait for a rainy day and fire toilet bowls.

We have defensive players who are supposed to be bedrock players under-achieving. That’s a coaching problem.

  56. unbelievable Says:

    – no need to upgrade at ILB
    – no need to upgrade at OLB
    – no need to need up the DL
    – no need to improve the secondary besides some rookie. In fact, let’s drop a fat stack in Zyons lap for having 1 single mediocre season.

Don’t worry, we’ll have our d lineman run 30 yards down field covering WRs instead!

Bowles and Licht deserve 100% of the blame for this underachieving season. Outside of a game or 2 the offense hasn’t even been the problem, despite being ravaged with injuries.

It’s the defense. It flat out sucks. SUCKS!!!!!

  57. Oxycondomns Says:

i dont understand when posters say bowles was 100% responsible for the selection of griz after bucs hot start but then bowles has 0 % responsibility for the defensive ends. bowles didnt sign off on reddick? bowles seems pretty high on morrison seems like that one was his pick . licht drafts jts and braswell without consulting bowles?

  58. Tye Says:

    NOT AT ALL!!!

Not as long as the DC is a pretender!

  59. Cybersecurity_intern Says:

We lose the division first place this week.

  60. Jjuice Says:

Look back at Bowles whole coaching career, has he ever drafted and developed an edge rusher? 20 yrs of coaching and nothing, that is a problem.

  61. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Begining of season Todd said himself he just wanted a offense to score more points than the other team. That was the scheme, score a TD every possession. Light the scoreboard up.To many lineman and receivers got hurt. #1 RB down. All the firepower disappeared and the ones who block too. Everyone knew the defense was suspect, even him.

  62. Jmarkbuc Says:

People like to refer to that Super Bowl, but they always forget to mention the fact that KC’s two starting tackles were out. We played at home, they played on the road. A member of their staff and Andy Reid’s son maimed a child in a car wreck that week.

That and we had better players on the edge. It wasn’t some Bowles genius.

  63. unbelievable Says:

    @Jjuice – no, never.

@Inwoodjeremy – that’s actually a fair point. But he’s a defensive head coach who is dual hatting as the DC. That’s still his unit underperforming.

  64. SBucs Says:

Welcome to Todd’s big game bloodbath bingo, a national broadcast celebrating Todd’s plan of Vita Vea covering Puca Nacua as a true defensive genius.

  65. jimmy Says:

the bucs have not been consistent enough to be a threat at all this season. even the early in the year last minute wins were telling, if you werent a cheerleader.

grizzard has been saying the wrong things since he got hired and calling the a bad game since. a good half by the defense or shutting down goff were celebrated as signs of superbowls and mvp awards to come.

the hype machine got you. how many of the posters here work in the bucs marketing department?

  66. Stpetematt Says:

There’s several videos out there analyzing Bowles’s defense in that Super Bowl and it was extremely clever and pretty damn amazing. It confused the heck out of Mahomes because he kept shifting from a 1 deep safety look to 2 deep safeties at the snap. Made it incredibly difficult to move the ball down field and helped our pass rush get home. Seriously- watch the videos and realize he schemed an entire defense specifically for that game alone and Mahomes didn’t expect it as a result. It was different than anything we did that season!

  67. Inwoodjeremy Says:

@unbelievable – Agree and he is responsible. Problem daul hatting like that there is always a phase out of sync. Some games D looks good but then ST is off. Then offense and so on. Now in this day in the NFL I kinda get the concept of lighting the scoreboard up. Defenders can’t really play like they used to. It’s flag football-ish. Cant even pad up in practice without limits. It’s sad really. I think I watch the game because I love what it used to be more so than where it’s going. I’m trying to adjust and want players to be safe. I don’t like the new onside kick rule either. Teams should be allowed to use it when they want to.

  68. Defense Rules Says:

jmarkbuc … ‘Who hired BA? For what it’s worth that bloated coaching staff was ridiculous.’

The Glazers & Licht were so ecstatic that a ‘name’ HC was interested in coming here that they gave him anything he wanted. What I find hilarious is that BA was known everywhere as an offensive-minded coach & a QB guru, yet he really only wore 1 hat here: Head Coach. Did you every see him call plays during the games? I sure didn’t. I’m sure that his red pen worked overtime during the week ‘massaging’ Byron’s game plans, but Byron still called the plays.

And did you ever see BA criticize Todd Bowles for any of HIS defensive play calls? I never did. I suspect that BA & Todd had about the same relationship that Tony Dungy had with Monte Kiffin. It was Monte’s defense, period.

Todd should’ve learned that lesson from BA when he took over in 2022. BA operated ‘above all the crap’ & it worked for 2 years (once we got Tom Brady). JL stocked this roster with a lot of quality talent, and went deep in debt to pay for it. But that’s OK; we got the Super Bowl that was Goal#1 (and we would’ve had 2 SBs I’m convinced IF things had worked out a tad differently in 2021). Such is life.

  69. JA Says:

    D.R.
    As usual, appreciate the research.
But all those numbers are unimportant unless you juxtapose them beside other teams within the same time frame. Even the league average would suffice.
I could say, ā€œThe Bucs lost 100 players to IR in four years.ā€ ā€œWow!,ā€ might be a common retort.
Then again, it might not be an astounding number unless the league average was 101.

  70. Buc1987 Says:

Todd …I think Licht took a look at all the injuries and decided to pass on picking up a player or 2. Meaning what’s the point?

  71. Chuckys Bucs Says:

Ryan Clark is the last person who should be quoted in an article. Moron

  72. firethecannons Says:

I agree with Ryan’s take, I think we will end up 10 and 7 possibly 9 and 8. We will likely win the division. We will make the playoffs. We will lose 1st round. Todd Bowles will get another pass as Glazers appreciate that he is very cheap, in fact the least paid head coach in the league. Nothing changes. The draft comes and we focus on defense.

  73. Defense Rules Says:

JA … Couldn’t find any team ‘rankings’ regarding games lsot to injury, but did pick a couple of other teams out of curiosity to see how we might stack up.

Since the start of 2022, Lions have lost 929 ‘man-games’ (not sure what they’d even call it). That’s more than we got hit with, but survived all that quite well IMO (better DEPTH?).

The Eagles have been hit pretty hard too, but not as badly as us or the Lions. Eagles lost 526 ‘man-games to injuries’ since the start of 2022.

The Chiefs, yet another contender, were hit about as hard as the Eagles, yet managed to win 2 Super Bowls (2022 & 2023). Chiefs lost 544 ‘man-games to injuries’ since the start of 2022.

It looks like everyone gets tagged with injuries, but some handle it much better than others do. My ‘guess’ (and that’s all it is) is that DEPTH makes all the difference in the world. I’m sure it’s also important though WHO you lose (had Chiefs lost Mahomes in 2022 & 2023, I kinda doubt that they would’ve won 2 Super Bowls).

  74. Buc1987 Says:

Texas Bucs Fan…I said 9-8 too and missing the playoffs to boot.

  75. BigZ Says:

    No kidding..

  76. BigZ Says:

Contenders have a legit pass rush, not gimmicks.

  77. VOT Says:

With Todd at HC this team is going nowhere

Hoping we can hold it under a 3 score loss tomorrow

I don’t think we can beat Carolina twice. I think we lose to the Dolphins and Falcons

3-3 finish and 9-8 missing the playoffs

Todd must go as soon as possible- we are going backwards fast with him in charge

  78. Aqualung Says:

Because Todd Blowes is a LOSER.

  79. FortMyersDave Says:

Aqualung, I saw one another Buc website, their spin (in their top page story) is now how can Jason shore up the D frontline and aging LB core…. So it looks like the powers that be are already setting the players up to blame for the defense being a train wreck and that means giving Bowles and his D coaches are getting a pass. How the heck is Bowles not being held accountable, is it not his job to make a D scheme which works with the talent he has? Seems like Bowles is not so creative and unable to adapt. He has to go if they do not win a playoff game.

  80. Aqualung Says:

FM Dave – the Glazers and Jason both see what we see. As Joe has inferred, Glazers are why Tood is HC. We can only hope that Jason gets his chance to hire our next BA after this season.

  81. FrontFour Says:

@DefenseRules – That May be the best synopsis of where this team is that I’ve read anywhere. Thank you.

  82. FrontFour Says:

FortMyersDave – I agree with you to a point. Other that Whitehead and Carlton Davis, what other Bucs defensive starter cast offs have gone on to other teams and started.
