Sorry defense.
How bad was the Bucs’ defense today?
Well, Joe doesn’t want to go the let’s-count-the-ways route because Joe will still be typing this here story at 10 p.m.
But here is how awful the defense was:
Todd Bowles preaches takeaways more than Joe preaches the value of a cold beer on a Friday afternoon in July afternoon in Florida. The Bucs got three takeaways.
Really good, right?
Well, not until you look at the final score of today’s embarrassment in western New York: Buffalo 44, Tampa Bay 32.
Forty-four freaking points. And that’s with three takeaways!
This Bucs defense needs more than a scolding from its starting quarterback. It needs a kick in the arse, especially this effete edge rush.
But really, what should we expect from a defense run by a guy who doesn’t give a damn about an edge rush because if he did give a damn about an edge rush, by now the Bucs would have one.
Instead, the same guy thinks it’s a savvy move to have an edge rusher (YaYa Diaby) cover a wide receiver some 30 yards downfield, which is exactly what happened when Josh Allen hit Tyrell Shavers on a 43-yard touchdown.
It’s the same ol’ crap. Why should we expect something different?
If only the Bucs had a defensive-minded head coach.

At this point, Carolina has a real shot at winning our division. If they do, Todd needs to be fired. He’s an above average defensive coordinator and a below average head coach who’s benefited from having talented players cover up his mistakes.

Todd has proven to be inept in so many ways, watching YaYa and Nellie get beat on wheel routes for the 200th time is literally making me cry…
A secondary that plays 10 yards behind the play or just look completely lost on 99% of the pass plays
How do the GM and owners not see what all of us can??????
It’s almost like all of this is just a fix, it’s all a work – it can’t be true that someone is getting paid millions of dollars to put this trash on the field

To be fair the sp teams did give bills short fields, however, you can’t have OLBs dropping into coverage as often as Bowles does, there’s going to be a mismatch and it happened on 2 tds today.

I mean, I agree… offense could have done more… but the defense is what continues to fail. It’s not about just an edge rusher either. The team looks constantly confused on defense, like they straight up don’t know the playbook.
It’s sad to watch, but what is sadder, is the complete ignoring that this is a problem year over year.
To those that say “we are one solid edge rusher away” I say “nay, nay” we are a defense and an actual coordinator away.

No, you don’t understand … the Bills would never expect the Bucs to take their best pass rusher, really their only legit pass rusher, and have him playing in zone defense 45 yards down the field. In most cases the offenses are paralyzed with indecision in seeing something that stupid – they’re like, wow, I can’t process how you’d ever call that defense – and that is the opening that gives us a chance. It just didn’t work out this time.

Shameful is an understatement. No pass push. Morrison is toast, WRs running wide ass open for the entire season and special teams kickoff coverage was horrendous. Baker had to force throws bc he knew his defense was giving up the booty all game long. Done watching these pathetic group of players and bad coaches.

Defense 100% let us down most of this game, granted it provided a few opportunities early, it feels like they got outclassed between the lines most of the game. Bills weren’t doing anything special, just taking what we gave them and doing the most with it.
Don’t care who has to speak up, or who’s the player to rally behind but this s**t has to stop. The big plays are effin’ terrible.

The edge on coverage was Anthony Nelson. Btw Joe, they went and got your boy Haason Reddick. A little too late but Reddick should have been better than what he’s displayed. You can’t blame that on coaching. Although, they should have gotten someone younger through the last 2-3 drafts. Without Mike Evans, this Redzone offense is lifeless outside of Tucker balling out before they got choked out in the redzone.
The game was competitive, it’s more than most of us expected.

I saw number 0 way down field near the endzone……WTF….then late saw DE Nelson chasing a speedy receiver across the middle….WTF…..This defense is a total POS. We just need a defense that doesn’t S*CK.
I said before the game, that we will lose today and next week.
Why?
Because we aren’t a good enough team to beat the Bills or the Rams.
Our offense, even with the unbelievable amount of injuries, can beat anybody.
But our defense and special teams aren’t good enough to beat good teams.
And we won’t go anywhere in the playoffs, until we fix the defense, and hire a qualified special teams coach.
Expect another short playoff run, and another year of Baker Mayfield’s career wasted.
Licht needs to get off his a**, and fix both of those issues. Fast.
You don’t luck into franchise QBs often. You don’t waste the years you have with them.

I believe there is something going on regarding morale on this team or it may also be e the players are tired of this “exotic” defensive HC. So many defenders nowhere near receivers and always players missing tackles. It’s over due for Bowles expiration date. There is no improvement on the defense and players look slow and unreative to where the ball is.
Some of the defensive players look tired and beaten every week. Winfield is a cap casualty already. In hindsight stupid to overpay him. Non factor every week. Braswell and Logan Hall are just bodies out there and I believe the were high draft picks. Where is their talent development? Love Lavonte but he’s over the hill. Is McCollum worth a high salary.
With this defense reeling Todd Bowles future looks pretty dark. What a shame the Glazers resigned him. Bucs need some juice, not an unemotional stoical HC who can’t game plan or adjust to the current generation of players.

Licht doesn’t get a pass for not trading for defense. We suck out loud. IMHO, our edge rush is beyond pitiful. There were affordable trades, but we said “nah, we like underachieving edge rushers that are home grown”

Great article Joe. Two losses in a row were defensive failures. They gave up huge plays last week and dumb schemes today. Is this a scheme or pack of effort? Scoring 32 points should win games; offense did their part today and did enough last week.

Getting one or two edge rushers within the last 2-3 drafts is not impossible. What scorched Earth offense scoring 50 a game are we looking at exactly?
Clearly the Bucs have tried drafting edge, but their talent evaluation, with a defensive HC sucks – Diaby is mid, Braswell is a bust, Ramirez is a project/role player, Watts is a project/role player, Logan Hall is a one trick pony, JTS is a bust. I would have gone Edge in 2023 instead of drafting Mr. Glass (Calijah Kancey).
Todd Bowles values run D more than pass D.

This team is a system-wide failure. The scheme sucks, and the players are soft, lost and gutless. We can’t rush. We can’t cover. We can’t tackle. This falls on both Licht and Todd.

Bowles is not going to win a Super Bowl as the Bucs head coach. He has reverted back to poor game management, and his defense is atrocious. The offense has been ravaged by injuries but is still producing at a high level. The problem is the guy running the defense.

Yeah I couldn’t see them winning this & I’ve got a feeling they’re probably losing next week, too! I had them going 10-7 from the beginning. When nothing changes on D then what do they expect. They need to go out & spend $$$$ on the D in the offseason next year but I’m sure they’ll be too cheap to. He needs to stop dropping everyone out.

If he had an edge rush then he couldn’t be praised for his “genius” blitz packages. Which work great against USFL quarterbacks, but not good NFL ones. Unless they can barely walk like Drew Brees in the playoffs and Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

Let’s stop referencing Bowles with anything related to a Super Bowl. Bowles has made it out of the 1st rd ONE TIME is in his career as a HC. He’s had the luxury of Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield, a weak division, multiple OCs that have proven capable….hes simply not capable of taking a team to the next level. The defense perpetually looks flat which directly reflects Bowles personally.
Do the players like him….sure. He’s an ex player that understands their perspective but players loved Raheem too. You can’t straddle the fence of being everyone’s friend and holding your players to the highest level of accountability.

@Joe… Your myopic point of view, usually supported by all the sycophants who read your stuff, doesn’t ever do is point the finger where it should be. The problem with the defense is not talent. Plenty of that. It’s scheme. It doesn’t work. A stop-the-run priority in a predominantly passing league has been proven to not work. The Bucs now have a 4 year history that proves that. The problem is Todd Bowles. He may be a good head coach. But he’s stubborn and will not do what is needed: hire a defensive coordinator who will overhaul his dilapidated defensive scheme that simply does not work. Almost all the games the Bucs lost this year, as well as the close ones they won, revealed a defensive scheme that does not work. How many times did we see Anthony Nelson get burned in deep pass coverage today? On TV, I counted 2 and I am 100% certain there were more that were not shown on TV. He has shown that he’s a rare buc lineman who can sack the quarterback. Why is he in deep pass coverage?
Why don’t you man-up and ask Todd Bowles that question, or one like: When are you going to fix your sad-ass pass defense? And then keep asking it until he actually provides a real answer. I am sure you’ll never do that because you’re too concerned with sucking up, and not reporting. Sad.

For how long do we have to put up with this as Bucs fans. Todd Bowles seems like a good guy but he is not a good head coach. The defensive lapses, special teams horrible play and very suspect coaching decisions have plagued this team since Bowles took over. Sure the Bucs have won the division every year Bowles has been head coach but the South has been a horrible division the entire time. Any other division the Bucs might have been watching the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years. Going for two in the middle of the 3’rd quarter the last two weeks shows his decision making is flawed. You don’t chase points that early in the game, especially a one score game.
