Seeing Luke Goedeke Back At Practice Gives Baker Mayfield Peace Of Mind

November 6th, 2025

Right tackle Luke Goedeke.

Joe heard a lot of chatter at One Buc Palace yesterday about how the bye week provided as much mental relief to the Bucs as it did physical relief.

And Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield had additional relief when he saw Bucs starting right tackle Luke Goedeke return to practice Wednesday.

(Joe remembers when the Bucs played at Green Bay in 2023. It was a cold, rainy mid-December day. Warm by Wisconsin standards in the low-40s, but still miserable. The Bucs seemed glued to their heated benches and covered up by those winter jackets teams issue football players. Well, except for the Bucs’ offensive linemen who stood on the sideline pregame without wearing any of those coats and nowhere near the heated benches. And, there was someone else standing on the sideline ready to play in front of the big uglies: Baker Mayfield. He’s one of them.)

Mayfield was certainly happy with seeing Goedeke. He has the mentality of an offensive lineman, so with one of his guys who happens to be a helluva player getting healthier, you could almost see from his body language Mayfield was relieved.

“It is good, always good to see Luke back,” Mayfield said. “Obviously, when you lose a guy like [right guard] Cody [Mauch], and then Luke’s been out for a while — two of our guys that enforce the physicality on the offense.

“Good to see Luke back out there, hopefully he keeps progressing and he is able to go [on Sunday against New England].”

Mayfield made it clear he wasn’t dissing Goedeke’s backup Charlie Heck. Since Goedeke tapped out of the game in Houston Week 2, Heck has been a rock (and rocky) in Goedeke’s place. And he’s gotten better, too.

The Bucs weren’t struggling on offense because of Heck, that’s for sure.

“Still have trust in Charlie to go out there and do his job like he has been doing,” Mayfield said.

But yeah, if you can get a guy who may have been a Pro Bowl right tackle back in the lineup, that surely cannot hurt.

Um – pretty sure I saw something just recently about Heck giving up more pressures than any other Offensive lineman in the league….

    A rock? Hmm ok

  4. Nicholas Carlson Says:

I’m not sure it’s for sure that Heck hasn’t been a part of the struggles…

  5. BucU Says:

Baker had to prop up Heck a bit because he knows Goedeke won’t be back this Sunday. I say 10% chance max.

We’ve thrown guys in at OL positions, switched them around, etc. there’s more to it than just physicality. Baker giving props to Heck helps the guy more that people know

Bucs are going to lose this weekend, Bucs will not make the playoffs and the Panthers will win the division, They showed they do not care about winning by getting no one on trade, No receivers, No Running game, yep, Same Ole Yucs

  8. Gofortheface30 Says:

Someone you need to do a cursory amount of research in to Heck’s pass blocking grade – and where he is ranked comparative to other tackles across the league then try to type with a straight face that Heck hasn’t been the driving factor or a major issue

Down Under, yes! Bring that optimism to the table. I mean do you really enjoy trolling or are you truly miserable?

If Luke Goedeke please this sunday, great. Just don’t rush him. I’d rather have him for the latter part of the season and in the playoffs. Would be helpful if he could play in one or two of the next three games, though.

  17. bill Says:

Down Under – your logic doesn’t make sense. The Bucs are not winning the division because they did not make any trades at the deadline, but the Panthers are going to win the division because they did make …….. no trades at the deadline! LOL

you can’t make this stuff up! it writes itself

  18. Down Under Says:

My bet is that Goedeke would love to play Sunday, If they let him… That is a big if. He tried to go even with the initial injury. Tough dude but… I get it. I tried to go on a shattered ankle but that worked out the same as it did for Luke. Mind says yes, body says no.

    Go Bucs!
