Baker Mayfield: Chris Godwin And Emeka Egbuka Bring Calm To The Chaos

September 25th, 2025

Calm like Chris Godwin.

Joe has been fortunate over the years to be on the sidelines of Bucs scrimmages, against teammates and other teams.

The game is like a beehive. People talking, chattering, guys in motion, quarterback barking signals, defenders hollering to get in position, defenders reacting to guys in motion, chatter among offensive linemen. It’s wild.

Then throw the emotions and players running on and off the field, Joe can’t imagine how crazy it must be in a real NFL game.

Yesterday, Baker Mayfield noted receivers Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka both bring calm to the madness because of their steady, professional demeanors.

“I would say [Godwin] and Emeka are really similar in that regard, even-keeled, really never get too high,” Mayfield said. The only time they get low is when they beat themselves up if they do not make a play. They are just that competitive.”

Professionalism from both receivers, especially Godwin, fosters trust with teammates, Mayfield said.

“They understand what they are able to do, and if they do not do it right, they are really hard on themselves — not that they outwardly express it, but you can tell,” Mayfield said.

“Chris is a guy that has so much experience, he has played a lot of ball at a high level, so when he is in there guys just trust him, we all do.”

Joe guesses a level-headed demeanor also is confidence. And it’s wild that Egbuka in his very first NFL game called his own shot. That’s confidence.

And with Godwin (likely?) playing on Sunday, that has to help with the confidence and professionalism he brings to the huddle.

I know everyone will be happy for Chris to take the field, after such a bad injury. Besides football, this is just a human interest story!, wanting the person to be whole again for him. I am sure he will be on a count and hopefully he gets the ball early so he can mentally begin after such a devastating injury.

So… when Godwin and Egbuka are calm on the field during a game, it’s confidence. But when Bowles is calm on the sideline during a game, he’s disengaged and detached? Okay.

    4-0!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

Godwin has been mentoring and player-coaching Egbuka, too. Putting them on the field together along with our pass catching RBs and TEs forces the DBs to dial down the dirty stuff. They’ll be too mentally busy trying to figure out who is getting the ball. That is a big PLUS in my book! 4-0, Bucs!! (Stick it to the refs, too.)

This is a game that is going to be almost insurmountable. Bucs are going to have to win the turnover battle and play mistake free football. If they have 124 yards in penalties again this week that ship is sunk. Pun intended. Were going to see just how far Grizzard has come as a play caller because the passing game is going to have to be shortened. Hopefully we will get a couple shots down field. Can the right side of the O-line hold up? Can we successfully run some wide receiver screens? Draw plays? The defense MUST slow down Barkley and Must get pressure on Fields. Fields will make mistakes if you can pressure him. If the Bucs were fully healthy I would give the Bucs a real good chance of winning. In this instance,

If the refs actually call an even game, fair on both sides, we stand a chance. But last week was a home game, and the referee’s calls made and not made were absolutely ridiculous. If the game is called like last week we don’t win this Sunday. Hard to beat two opponents simultaneously.

  7. Jmarkbuc Says:

If the field position is appropriate.. it’s a good week for a fake punt..

  8. Woodman Says:

Who is Fields ? We would have played him last week if he wasn’t hurt. You must mean Hurts?

No hip drop tackles anymore please nor alligator rolls while holding an ankle!

Godwin really needs to come back this week!

It is a trifecta if Godwin can come back this Sunday.

Bill Kilmer – Beautifully said. It is an human interest story. It has been a long road of healing for Chris.
