Baker Mayfield Has No Time For Injuries

September 22nd, 2025

Top NFL insider explains.

It’s no exaggeration to suggest folks watching a football game on TV and folks watching high above the field are watching two different games.

That’s not Joe trying to be demeaning at all. It’s just two wildly different perspectives.

For example, Joe noticed on social media during yesterday’s game there was constant chatter about Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield’s hand. Joe was way up in the press box, not watching on TV. What hand injury?

What’s wrong with Mayfield’s hand? There was no injury announcement. He’s in the game. He’s throwing well. What’s the deal?

(In NFL press boxes, any time there is an injury of note, a timely announcement is made stating the injury. The TV folks get the info usually about the same time, maybe slightly quicker because they have producers and on-air talent with boots on the ground.)

Later while Twitter was still abuzz about Mayfield’s hand, someone posted a video of Mayfield flexing his hand after he got hit. Ah, OK. Mayfield stayed in the game and threw well. We should all have a hand so hurt.

Joe brings this all up because folks still think Mayfield has a bum hand. Is he covering up an injury?

This was asked by someone on Pat McAfee’s show today when NFL uber insider Adam Schefter made an appearance.

Without saying so, Schefter suggested he wouldn’t be surprised if Mayfield is hiding an injury because Mayfield doesn’t have time for injuries.

Schefter told the story of speaking with Jason Licht a Bucs source the day after the win over the Steers in Houston last week. This same source saw how Mayfield got beat up in the game.

This source, per Schefter, said the team approached Mayfield after the game to ask if he’s OK. Mayfield responded, per Schefter, in so many words, ‘eff you, get out of my face.’

There was no doubt watching the game last Monday night that Mayfield was beat up. But like the tough Texan he is, almost like a throwback to an old western cowboy, Mayfield doesn’t have time to be hurt. He’s got ballgames to win for the Bucs.

And nobody makes Baker bleed his own blood.

Baker is a Certified Bad Ass! Glad he is on our side. Fun to watch. Keep baking.

  8. lambchop Says:

Baker is unsuspectingly tough if you just look at him and never saw him play. He’s a throwback player like Elway in that sense. Elway was a brute and didn’t have time for injuries. Me throw football, me win games. What’s impressive is his grit, determination, and mental toughness to overlook physical injuries.

  9. Bucfan1988 Says:

Baker is this generation’s Brett Farve but without picks of his Johnson being texted 🤭

  12. GoneGator Says:

Troll #1….. Baker would probably think you’re a POS if he knew you even existed. Same as coach(s), GM, and the rest of the players.

    Thick as a brick.

  13. Todd Says:

Baker knows who Wally Pipp was and what happened to him.

I am reminded of the words of Jesse Ventura in Predator, “I don’t have time to bleed”.

  16. Gipper Says:

To all the Mayfield; ” yeah, but he throws too many INT(s)…..” crowd, here is the Mayfield INT total through 3 games—ZERO.

Can guarantee all the Monday morning quarterbacks out there that Mayfield will throw some INT’s this year. When they happen, maybe just relax. They are part of the game whether your name is Elway, Marino, Manning or Mahomes. It usually is the fattest couch potatoes that scream the loudest about INT’s.

  17. darengibo Says:

When dirt gets hurt, it rubs Baker on it.

  18. Ex Browns Fan Says:

He got injured in Cleveland. Instead of negotiating his first extension, the Browns gave a quarter-billion guaranteed some dummy who hadn’t played in a year because of, well, Houston never said why.

  19. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Damn this dude is a football player. You can tell this team is 100%bought in too. Took me a bit but I’ve bought in as well. Now don’t go throw three ints in the second quarter this week. I hope he keeps playing smart and hopefully he doesn’t have to keep being our best rushing threat. He’s basically been patching up all the holes in the ship for three weeks. He can’t do it forever.

  20. Davyboy Says:

Baker played half the 2021 season with a fractured shoulder and a completely torn labrum. They made him stop playing once they saw in an x-ray it was fractured. I don’t think a brused hand is going to keep him from playing. Say 8, say 8…

  21. Stpetematt Says:

Speaking of injuries I have an idea. What about rotating Heck and Chukwama for passing/throwing downs? We’d get the best out of each of them…

  22. Teacherman Says:

    He’s The Aries.

    I dare you.

Go read about Aries men and then tell me the description doesn’t match Baker Mayfield exactly!

Aries are the macho men of the zodiac. They are the most intense. They are the most competitive. And the toughest!

    Aries love challenges.

Baker is the King of Aries!

    The God of War!

  23. Stpetematt Says:

Meant for running/throwing downs. Heck is a great run blocker and Chuk is probably a much better pass protector…

  24. heyjude Says:

Love the video “Frozen Yogurt” too funny!

So much talk about Baker’s hand yesterday on air. That is right, Baker just keeps doing his thing and concentrating on winning.

  25. Bantry Says:

Baker channels his inner Chuck Norris!

  26. QB6 Says:

    THAT’S MY QB!

    He is THAT MAN!

Speaking of injuries I have an idea. What about rotating Heck and Chukwama for passing/throwing downs? We’d get the best out of each of them…

Because that would telegraph what we’re doing (running vs throwing) imo. Now if we have a solid lead and want to smash mouth run out the clock, I’m all for it.

“I don’t got time to bleed.”
“Do you have time to duck?”

    Name that movie …

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Baker Mayfield doesn’t read defenses. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If you want a list of Baker Mayfield’s division rivals, just check the extinct species list.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Seriously…I think his hand was at least a bit sore…but it helped his accuracy a lot.

  36. BucsfaninOregon Says:

A long, long time ago there was a Lion’s QB named Bobby Lane. He took enormous beatings (they played if you get hit, go down and get up and run you could)! But, he played on.

My guy Baker could have plated in those days.

  37. Bucnjim Says:

Love the movie references, but this is real life. Mayfield is tough, which is very hard to find these days. Several fans on here made fun of the word scrappy. What no one realized was, if you add scrappiness to a very good QB, you have a winner.

  38. Vanessa Anne Says:

    @joebucsfan.com

Joe, Baker was absolutely flexing his hand.

It was clear as day on the broadcast.

It didn’t affect his game, obviously, but it was clear he took a couple of hits to it.

  39. Kenton Smith Says:

Just a little hand stinger. Good as new in just a few minutes. He fell kind of funny on it when he got it knocked out of his hand. Wish he’d try to keep 2 hands on the ball as long as he can. Man his teammates must know he can get a case of the fumbles cause man they have his back when he does fumble it! But I think he needs to start working on better ball control. Looks like he’s focused on cutting down on those picks but fumbles can get you beat just as quick as picks can.

  40. Davyboy Says:

At the rate Baker is going on “late game winning drives”, he will over take the GOAT’s record of “late game winning drives” half way through the 2027 season. Baker will be 32 years old. And “they” said Baker couldn’t orchestrate late game winning drives. lmao
That’s a big record, look out, that cream just keeps on rising

  41. LakelandSteve Says:

My guess is Chukwama just isn’t ready to play against “real” NFL players. He did ok in the preseason considering the guy has barely any football experience. However, the guy has so much raw ability the Bucs are keeping him On the active roster so he doesn’t get poached off the practice squad by another team.

  42. Marky mark Says:

Every body loves that attitude but it got him booted out of Cleveland. 4th game 2021 he injured his left shoulder. He was never the same. He tried to play through it with bad results. He has admitted he should have gotten the surgery right away. At this point he is mature enough to know when he can go or not. The fact he is cursing and annoyed should let you know he us fine.

  43. Don'tBmad Says:

You bled for Wallace….now bleed for me

  44. orlbucfan Says:

Well, Cleveland is screeching over treating Bake like warmed over dirt. Go check out their blogs. And his hand? Load it with a painkiller aka shot. Not that I think he needs it. Baker Mayfield is so grateful to Todd Bowles for giving him this chance, he would genuflect to him ‘cept it would be misunderstood in this dimwit country. And who is Chuckwama (sp?). Is he another OLine diamond in the rough?

  45. Drdneast Says:

Mayfield got hit on the hand a couple of times and FOX and the announcing crew were trying to make a big deal of it because Mayfield flexed his hand a couple of times. Drama queens.
