Bill Cowher, Matt Ryan Gush Over Baker Mayfield
September 22nd, 2025The accolades keep flowing for the Buccaneers’ franchise quarterback.
Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Cowher and retired Falcons QB Matt Ryan were part of a panel chat for CBS last night.
The subject of Baker Mayfield and the Bucs arose and damn, these guys were hyped for the Bucs.
“It’s a rebirth. It’s a rebirth,” Cowher bellowed about Mayfield. “It’s the maturity. It’s the opportunity. It’s the lessons learned along the way … one more chance to do this the right way.”
In Cowher’s mind, Mayfield has become like his head coach, all business.
“He is a reflection of Todd Bowles,” Cowher said. “Neither one of these guys, at the end of a game when they win, they’re not walking off smiling. They’re walking off saying, ‘Who’s next?'”
Ryan is thoroughly impressed by Mayfield’s work in the two-minute offense to close out games (who isn’t?) and he bowed for rookie playcaller Josh Grizzard.
“They haven’t skipped a beat with a new offensive coordinator and Liam Coen going to Jacksonville. It’s an impressive, impressive group in a division that has been wildly unimpressive,” Ryan said.
Ryan doesn’t believe the Panthers (1-2) who blew out and shut out the Falcons on Sunday, have the juice to compete for a division title. He’s also down on Atlanta and the Saints and believes the Bucs have a great chance to build a big division lead.

Loving Baker getting his due. Yes, a rebirth and I may add a perfect fit with the Bucs. He found the perfect place for his fancy feet.
Baker for MVP! In the future, Baker would make a great coach.

The saints looked horrrrrrrie yesterday. Couldn’t have happened to a better franchise. They seem destined for a #1 overall Qb come April though

no ints. he needs to keep that up. things are trending in the right direction but too many are too quick to credit bowles, licht, grizzard or others.
baker is the reason baker is so good.

Yes, Baker has been truly “Born Again in Tampa” in more ways than one. We are lucky to have him. Go Bucs!

The bucs played without three of their starting offensive linemen. Two of their 3 starting wide receivers. Yet Baker Mayfield continues to be a GREAT QB for this team. Three years, three offensive coordinators, with zero drop in his performance. Dave Canales and Liam Coen received a ton of credit for Mayfield’s success. Maybe it’s time Baker Mayfield received the credit for his play over the last three seasons.

his throws have been spot on and the runs make him look like an awesome scrambler!! he’s literally putting this dumb team on his back every week and getting guys to step up and make plays in the last 2 mins, shades of Brady. Tom is the only other bucs qb that consistently won last second games… No ints!! Thats the best, he’s playing really good!

Where are all the posters that said Baker was too short, no arm, no accuracy, blah, blah, blah? Does anyone have that list? For the record, Baker is 6’1″. Other current qbs that are 6’1″ and under are Brock Purdy, Kyler Murray, Caleb Williams, Tua, Russell Wilson, and Jalen Hurts that we face next. TGFB (Thank God For Baker)!
So, come out, call your name, apologize, and go back in hiding.

Buddha, they are “lying in wait”. It is hilarious to the point that I can’t take it anymore. It’s just too funny. The last thing they said Baker couldn’t do was orchestrate a last minute 4th quarter winning drive on a top defense. They said oh it’s easy to do that on a sorry defense but try doing it to a top rated defense, Baker can’t do that. So he goes out and performs 2 in a row on 2 top five defenses and the third was just for its and giggles. So I guess until Baker has a meltdown we won’t be hearing much from the Baker Bashers.☹️

How can anyone not tip their hat to Mayfield and smile for him and our Bucs? To see what he has been through since coming into the league is uniquely without compare to anything we’ve ever seen. Being drafted by the most dysfunctional team in the league and everything that unfolded there. Then being discarded like a used Kleenex to another dysfunctional team in Carolina, only to be dumped unceremoniously during his first season there to the Rams. With no preparation under McVay and Coen gets thrown into a Thursday Night game not even knowing their playbook and wins the game and finishes the season as their starter. The next off season nobody seemed to want him except for Bowles & Licht. Then he finds himself having to follow the Goat, Tom Brady’s Super Bowl winning tenure here and somehow win over the team, the fans, and the starting qb position. Having 2 career seasons never having the same offensive coordinator for consecutive years ever in his pro career! Think about that for a moment. And here we are now, his 3rd season with our Bucs, winning the first 3 games in a row, 2 on the road with last minute scoring drives that he willed his team to victory while his teammates run through a wall for him. A perfect marriage of a quarterback and a town. This is the stuff classic sports movies are made of. A one of a kind story. If anyone ever deserved a Super Bowl ring in his career, it would be Baker Mayfield. Man, it’s good to be a Buc fan!

Bill Cowher … “He is a reflection of Todd Bowles. Neither one of these guys, at the end of a game when they win, they’re not walking off smiling. They’re walking off saying, ‘Who’s next?’”
That’s a fascinating take, and Cowher’s probably spot on. Got me wondering if Todd’s ‘steady as she goes’ demeanor had rubbed off somewhat on Baker. Or maybe Todd’s approach is more ‘Let’s not get too excited lads, it’s just 1 more win; it’ll take a lot more to win the Super Bowl’.

Where have the TEs gone? A few throws to the TE could take some of heat off Baker.

Bucs And Them: Beautifully said.

Bucman thought this went thru the chat yesterday the TE’s were busy helping no name offense line block.

BuddhaBuc, I would say Baker need better accuracy…but no QB is 100% perfect. Always room to improve.

For Baker to have Bill Cowher and Matt Ryan’s support is incredible!!
Baker Mayfield is really playing at an amazing level !!
Go Bucs !!

If someone doesn’t tell Todd to tell his DC to stop employing soft shell pass defensive collapses in the 4th quarter to squander leads, and continue with what had been working to stifle opponents all game, this fun train is falling off the tracks into a canyon.
The only reason we’re 3-0 is thanks to the Falcons unemployed kicker (because Penix was allowed to drive the length of the field in about 50 seconds – AW2 heroics saved Todd’s rancid bacon) , and then against the Texans and Jots, Baker got the winning points with no time left. With any time at all, the opponent would easily drive into field goal range at least.
The script is old and tired. But Groundhog Day. It’s life with The Genius.

It was Todd Bowles, yeah Aqualung, THAT Todd Bowles, who found Bake on the NFL slag heap and brought him here. Baker, himself, has said that he really needed to grow up. All the Heisman, First Round Draft Pick hype went to his head. I don’t watch college football, so I wasn’t familiar with him until he came here. Wowsers, it didn’t take me too long to gain respect for him. I could feel how excited the whole Bucs team acted around this guy. They sure didn’t do it with Brady. Mayfield has earned and deserves all the kudos and praise coming his way. Matt Ryan knows, and we Bucs fans know who he is. I still wish Bake would learn how to slide.
