Gerald McCoy Defends Baker Mayfield
September 18th, 2025
Don’t run smack on Baker.
Joe admits to not watching many TV hollering shows because Joe is usually busy keeping this here corner of the interwebs humming.
From time to time, Joe sees a clip from former Bucs running back Shady McCoy. Let’s just say he’s no fan of Baker Mayfield.
Shady used to co-host an FS1 weekday hollering show with former linebacker Emmanuel Acho. Their show got bounced a couple of months ago and both Acho and Shady launched a YouTube show, “Speakeasy.”
Acho and Shady put out a video recently about Mayfield. There Acho said there is only one quarterback in the NFC who is “clearly” better than Mayfield. That would be Matt Stafford of the Rams.
Shady was appalled and said someone would have to be out of their mind to pick Mayfield over Jayden Daniels of the Commandos. Acho told Shady he’s not right.
This discussion apparently triggered former Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle and current NFL Network personality Gerald McCoy.
GMC scolded Acho and Shady for even daring to include Daniels in the same sentence with Mayfield.
In short, GMC said Daniels is not worthy (yet) of being compared to Mayfield.
@Geraldini93: Jayden Daniels not better than Baker. Not clearly not barely. None of it. Yall bugging 1 year and he’s better. Yall did this with CJ Stroud and here we are. Yall kill me with this microwave society stuff man. Yall crown people and they haven’t proven anything. 1 season 1 and he’s better than Baker. Who’s actually been through some adversity. And shown he can handle it. Aight man. ✌🏾
The way Acho defined it, emphasizing the world “clearly,” Joe agrees. There isn’t a large enough body of work yet for Daniels to put him above Mayfield.
And remember: Mayfield’s Bucs should have beaten Daniels’ Commandos if the Bucs could have forced one punt and/or snapped a ball late.
Things got heated in the SPEAKEASY between Shady and Acho, when Acho asked:
“How many QB’s are CLEARLY better than Baker Mayfield in the NFC?” 😳😳 pic.twitter.com/zqlfJeJwvN

“AND”
The word the internet has forgotten. Why when one player good that must mean others can’t be good?
For example: Jordan is the greatest so LBJ must suck.
More than one player can be good or great. Baker AND Daniels are really good. It’s okay. MJ AND Kobe, LBJ, Magic, Bird, Wilt, Shaq, etc are great.
AND … it’s a great word.

In the 2 games they have played each other here are the results.
Average of 2 games:
Completion % Yards. TD. Passer Rating. QBR
Baker. 81.6 10.1 3 146.5 73.4
Jayden. 69.7 7.7 1 101.6 54.7
I’m not sure where people think he is better than Baker. It is obviously the same people that said Baker would never start in the NFL again.

McCoy has consistently been one of Bakers biggest haters. I’ve watched their former FS1 show a few times, and every single time Baker came up, McCoy did nothing but hate on him as much as possible. Even after last season.
Between seeing that multiple times and listening to him speak on other subjects, it became clear to me that his opinions are worthless, based on nothing more than his personal opinions of players. Acho OTOH seems to go with facts and reasoning most of the time (a concept that is almost dead in 2025 it seems), so I have enjoyed his takes. Shady just seems permanently butthurt.

Probably because in his rookie year Daniels took his team to the NFC Championship game, and beat Baker head-to-head in the playoffs.
Baker, who was handed the ball in the 4th quarter after the defense made a huge goal line stand, he had a chance to go up two scores and put the game away, instead he turned the ball over. It was Daniels who lead his team to the game winning score, not Baker.

To be clear, I was talking about LeSean McCoy in my post, not GMC. We all know GMC is an unabashed Bucs homer for life.

That was all due to coaching and ANYBODY that knows football thinks the same thing. When you have 2 quarterbacks that play twice in the same year and one dominates the other like Mayfield did Daniels it’s not hard to figure out. Well for most it’s not hard.
September 18th, 2025 at 1:36 am
Mayfield’s passer rating is 1/3 more give me a break. Domination by Mayfield but Daniels is better says Munch. How often does 1 quarterback dominate another by 1/3? Not very often
September 18th, 2025 at 1:38 am
The only reason we lost munch was because Mayfield only played 1/2 of the game, wake up and pay attention.
September 18th, 2025 at 1:46 am
I’m not going to argue with you munch like a lot of people do because you will never change your mind even when the evidence is overwhelmingly against you. I’ll say this, sit back and watch and as usual you will be proven wrong again. Mayfield is easily the better of the 2. Coaching and game planning matters but not to you.

^^^^^^
Thanks for the history lesson Rod, now do all of the good stuff Baker has done for the Bucs…Or don’t you remember any of that?

Enjoyed the video and their lively discussion. Yes, wake up and smell the coffee, Baker is one of the best QBs. The Browns and other teams are kicking their-selves now for letting Baker go. Brown fans were highly upset when they released Baker for the guy they took instead and didn’t play with one of the highest contracts ever. We are lucky to have Baker.

Jordan Love is also a great example of a QB coming out hot and fading, got to give it a few years before throwing out who’s better blah blah, at this point, I’d say Stafford n Hurts deserve to be ranked above Baker, they have done it longer and have rings, Hurts seems to be regressing but not the point, Baker in 2nd tier with Jayden in Love behind him, then Purdy n Dak. AFC no question have the overall top 4 LJ Allen Mahomes Burrow (when healthy), Stafford Hurts then Baker n Herbert
September 18th, 2025 at 6:29 am
I didn’t know he needed defended. Although he needs defended by his Oline. He’s getting beat to a pulp.
September 18th, 2025 at 6:52 am
Take away Daniel’s ability to run like a running back, he’s nothing special really. Nowhere near the pocket quarterback Jackson’s turned itself into. Now, he might develop into that eventually. He’s not there yet.

He REALLY likes that word.

Baker would be even better if Gerald typed in English I think.
Go Bucs!
September 18th, 2025 at 9:35 am
Using your logic od Mayfield hammered Big Ben in the playoffs so clearly Baker is better than Ben.

Shady McCoy loves a Cleveland Steamer.

Marky Mark,
You need to remember that Rod still thinks JayMiss is a great QB.

The cream is still risin, where will the ceiling prove to be? no doubt top 5, most likely top 3😜

Just when I thought Rod munch changed .. Nope!

You guys are literally insane if you don’t think every GM in football, including Licht, isn’t going to take the Daniels if they had the choice of both. Daniels only played a year, yet played at an incredibly high level and took what was supposed to be a very bad team to the NFC Championship game. It’s not bashing Baker to say someone else is better – Baker is working his way into the elite category, and if he can come up big in a playoff game, he will get there. But Daniels has already done it – he’s already considered elite. His passing ability is not as good as Baker (but he’s still really good) but the combo of his passing and running, plus his youth and ceiling, is what pushes him ahead.
It’s not bashing Baker to say someone else, who is already elite and much younger, is slightly better.

Munch, I’m sure I remember a superbowl winning coach named Bruce Arians saying if he was to come out of retirement he would want Baker as his quarterback… So there’s that. If there is one like Arians I am sure there are others. I guess Arians is insane, right Munch? I know you aren’t the greatest critical thinker but try and figure out that team, coaching and game planning also come into play with a games result. And just so you know, a lot of people already consider Baker elite at this point. As far as Daniels vs. Baker, when Baker out plays Daniels by having a 1/3 better passer rating I’m sure the loss wasn’t on Baker, so there’s that too. Remember Rod, you’re the one that said over and over again Baker was a bum and a choker, remember? And then he goes out and wins 2 games in the last minute. Only a very small number of quarterbacks have ever done that. One last minute drive was on one of the leagues elite defenses. So there’s that also. So is Baker a bum and choker or were you wrong and now he’s elite or at least almost elite as you put it? I got a funny feeling that Baker is about to make late 4th quarter winning drives his thing.
