Report: Bucs To Sign Veteran Center/Guard Dan Feeney

September 17th, 2025

Bucs GM Jason Licht

A veteran of the Chargers, Jets, Bears and Vikings is coming to the Bucs.

TampaBay.com reports the Bucs have hustled to sign center/guard Dan Feeney off the Bills’ practice squad in the wake of news that right guard Cody Mauch is lost for the season with a bad knee.

Feeney, 31, was a third-round pick of the Chargers in 2017. He’s made 65 career starts at center, guard, and even as a blocking tight end with the Jets in 2021.

What a sad time this has become in Tampa. The Bucs entered the season expecting to have the best offensive line in the game, with a young, healthy group all 27 years old or younger.

On Sunday against the Jets, it’s possible every starting offensive line position will be manned by a player who, as of a month ago, was supposed to be in a different role.

Damn. What next?

  1. OR Buc Says:

Can we get a trade Jason? Our championship caliber team is no longer with a bunch of OL backups.

  2. OR Buc Says:

    Same for DL ^

  3. BPBucsfan Says:

I’ve never seen a team hit as hard as the Bucs with injuries, year after year. The Super Bowl year was an outlier on that.

  4. OR Buc Says:

I wonder if they’ll switch Jordan to RG when word comes back

  5. BuccinBaker6, Says:

I would put Jordan at RG but the bucs are Signing Freeney An have Sua Opeta coming in for a tryout an physical with a group of other guys so let’s see what Jason does he’s a OLine king an whisperer let’s relax Wirfs will be back an so will Luke just need to make it a few weeks but I think the OLine was so outmatched Monday that guys were getitng so beat up they seriously hurt themselves get right Cody He’s a dawg an will be missed him an Luke made a Strong Right side of the line

  6. #1bucsfan Says:

That’s crazy. Only 2 guys left. Benson and Barton. Wirfs really needs to come back faster now.

  7. Rastaferian Jenkins Says:

    For Sunday:
    LT Barton
    LG Jordan
    C Bredeson
    RG Klein
    RT Heck
    RT2 Durham

    LOL

  8. Stpetebucsfan Says:

This may be why the Bucs refused to let Liam steal Kevin Carberry. The OL coach will get to show why the Bucs wrote a big check and promoted him.

  9. buc4evr Says:

This team will never make it back to the SB with injuries every single damn year like this.

  10. GoneGator Says:

    @Stpete

Yep. Time for Carberry, and Grizz, to work some magic.

And geez can we catch a break with injuries for a few games 🙁 ?

  11. Bucccnasty Says:

The best ability in the NFL is availability.. it’s the main reason we won a Super Bowl

  12. Bucswin Says:

They didn’t survive all the training in the heat. Made them brittle. It’s a Bucs life! Go Bowles!

  13. firethecannons Says:

hope he can run block, we need to run the ball as much as possible while our players are out, have a feeling Egbuka is out for a while as well

  14. Aqualung Says:

Aaron Glenn will be stacking 8 in the box to stuff the run and doubling Mikey. They’ll be keying on the screen game and quick checkdowns. Baker will be tempted to do too much, I fear he’ll throw a pick or two while under massive duress. We already know the only thing special about the special teams is the short bus they ride on. The defense is gonna have to win this one. Wearing creamsicle. Why does that seem highly unlikely.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why was Mauck still in the game after his injury …

  16. StormyInFl Says:

At some point, the training staff needs to be questioned.

  17. StormyInFl Says:

At least they’ll have a top 10 pick to restock their lines with.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Can we get Ali Marpet some Steak n Shake giftcards and quickly add about 100 pounds to his frame and get him back on the field?

  19. Rod Munch Says:

I hope Licht is calling around and seeing if he can trade for someone, you’re not going to get a new quality guard for free. I hope the team isn’t so tied to future lottery tickets that they refuse to make a move. There’s got to be a team that has a young guy they want to play but he’s blocked by a veteran, and a 3rd or 4th rounder might get them.

Man do I wish the Bucs had been able to afford to keep Hainsey, he’d be incredibly valuable right now.

  20. Bucky Says:

Why was Mauck still in the game after his injury …

He probably didn’t complain or bring it up….do you even recall a time he was down for a longer period getting check on? Luke’s was obvious, Mauch may have a higher pain tolerance in game.

  21. Bucky Says:

  22. Bucs Fan in Ohio Says:

Is there anyone available that’s actually good at football we can sign?

  23. Rod Munch Says:

I was hoping Alex Cappa was a backup somewhere, but he’s actually starting for the Raiders. They are basically rebuilding, I wonder if they’d take like a 5th or 6th for him? He was apparently pretty bad in Cincinnati, but obviously was a pretty good player when he was here. Might be a target, perhaps.

  24. Nillyboy133 Says:

Baker gonna get killed with this line

  25. garro Says:

Dang! Please tell me the waterboy is ok! I have seen Feeny play so maybe Jason has done it yet again but…Not likely to get in the lineup any time soon. Chuk and Klein better get their heads ready.

    Bullock?

    Go Bucs!

  26. adam from ny Says:

maybe you don’t need an OLine at all, if rachaad is out there beasting again……lol

  27. adam from ny Says:

    ^^^

is that true…opeta is coming in for a look…good idea – get him back in the fold – work off that rust

  28. DungyDance Says:

The LT on the Giants James Hudson was flagged on 4 straight snaps last week and got benched. 2 of them were personal fouls. Giants may be willing to trade him for cheap. Better than a practice squad guy.

  29. Scotty Mack Says:

The sky is not falling, folks. Wirfs will be back shortly and Goedeke will be back in a couple of weeks, too. Once that happens, we’ll have four out of five of the original starting lineup.

  30. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Coming in hot from Optimistic Land.

    Aaron Stinnie.

Not saying get him, saying we won a ring with him. We can still make it happen this year.

  31. Gofortheface30 Says:

Jordan at RG is a fantastic idea, as he’s been better than serviceable. He’s been steady as hell. Provided Wirfs and Goedeke aren’t hobbled the entire year there’s a chance the Bucs still have a top 3 line. Can deal with injuries and or lack or production from other positions (defensive line) but if the offensive line remains in critical condition then yeah – the season is over and there is no reason to watch. All this Baker Mayfield and Bucs love throughout this week – over. The NBA sucks but atleast injuries never determine outcomes for the most part, stars are always available. There’s nothing awesome about watching 2nd and 3rd stringers and knowing the inevitable outcome to the season

  32. Bucsfan Says:

We need to see what Chukhwuma has at tackle.

  33. jcscycles Says:

Elijah Klein will work out fine. He was a great right guard at UTEP – all League, All Conference. He wasn’t drafted high due to not being invited to the combine, although he was invited, and played, in the East West game.

Bucs thought enough of him to try him at center during the preseason. He isn’t too tall at 6’3″, and has good leverage and locks up people quickly. In the past we have had people step in due to injury and become all pros(remember Donald Penn?). And don’t forget that we have a really good line coach.

Once Wirfs and Goedeke are back we will be in great shape. Give it two weeks. I’d say we can beat the Jets this weekend, who knows with the Eagles, and then be good for Seahawks.

The sky is not falling. And we won’t play the cheap shot Texans again for a long time. Sheesh – I never saw so many low tackles and uncalled penaltys before in the NFL. VERY lucky that Baker is OK.

  34. rrsrq Says:

The Bucs won a Super Bowl with Kenyatta Walker and then remember how Aaron Stinnie showed up in the last Super Bowl run. I have confidence in Licht, and there is a reason they promoted the offensive line coach. Look, we have not even heard Michael Jordan’s name negatively.

  35. rrsrq Says:

    My only concern is Heck

  36. shaftmaster Says:

We should be more worried about our lackluster pass rush. Offensive line will be ok as long Baker doesn’t get hurt.

  37. Rod Stewart Says:

The last two words of this article are what scares me the most. There’s going to be more injuries. Who’s next?

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Please lets hurry up and play the Jets. Every morning I wake up another Buc is down.

  39. UGotRobbed Says:

The remaining offensive linemen and tight ends need to put on their big boy pants for the next 4-6 weeks! If we can play 500 ball in that span and get healthy, we should be fine!

  40. Les Says:

BEEN SAYING IT LAST COUPLE OF YEARS .HIRE A WHOLE NEW CONDITIONING STAFF .FIRE WHO WE HAVE NOW .IT DOES NOT WORK . WAY TO MANY INJURIES LAST 3 YEARS .ENOUGH ! HAVE TO CHANGE IT UP.

  41. Tebowtime Says:

Its insane that JL is so stubborn about trading picks, esp late rounders. If you look at our 5th round and lower picks last few years we’ve gotten a bunch of losers. TBH we’ve gotten more active players as UFA.

Just trade some 5,6,7th rounders for a solid backup guard out there that has some experience and its better than a washed Feeney.

    I don’t get it.
