Todd Bowles Reacts To Calijah Kancey Loss

September 16th, 2025

Defensive lineman Logan Hall.

Todd Bowles sure sounded dejected today after a big win last night.

The head coach appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio and didn’t push back in disagreement when host Pat Kirwan, the former Jets assistant coach and personnel chief, asked Bowles how he would handle defensive tackle Calijah Kancey being lost for the year.

“It’s probably going to have to be by platooning,” Bowles said.

“We got [Greg] Gaines. We got [rookie Elijah] Roberts. We got Logan Hall. So we got a couple guys to try in there. [Adam] Gotsis and [C.J.] Brewer, as well. So depending on the scheme, depending on who fits what, we’ll proabably just sub them in and out.”

For those unaware, Gotsis and Brewer are on the practice squad. Gotsis is a 10-year veteran new to the Bucs and Brewer has been around Tampa a few seasons and had a couple of sacks last year in limited action.

Simply stated, there are no magic answers for the Bucs losing their 2024 sacks leader. Kancey also ranked second on the Bucs last season in tackles for loss and quarterback hits despite missing five games.

Anyone on a practice squad we can sign?

  2. RagingBrisket Says:

Licht has some work to do. Looks like both lines are lacking sufficient depth

  3. ElioT Says:

Kancey will be missed but time to move on for this year.

Opportunity for the other guys to step the **** up and make a name.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

Every club is going to be dealing with injuries. We just have to play hard with the people we have. Not time to panic yet.

  5. SlyPirate Says:

    NAME YOUR 2025 BUC #1

    Solo Tackles – 1
    Total Tackles – 1
    Sacks – 0
    Tackles for a Loss – 1

(BTW, All stats occured on the same play)

    ANSWER:
    Calijah Kancey
Probably not going to miss him as much as you think.

    NOTES:
    1. Elijah Roberts has more statistics (and created more disruption) in literally a handful of plays than CK did in two games. He looked GOOD!

    2. Vea has played the most downs of any defensive lineman. The Suh weightloss program works.

  6. Coburn Says:

Yeah didn’t mind what I saw from Brewer in the past. Maybe he gets called.ho, but Licht should def be looking at all of his options

  7. BuccinBaker6, Says:

    Prayers to Kancey

  8. Coconut Doughnut Says:

Go get Christian Wilkins on a prove it deal. Mr Licht, respectfully I know your reading. Go get him!

  9. Regulator16 Says:

Make a move by shopping around. Don’t waste a 2-0 road start. We’ll be healthy on o-line in a few weeks and Godwin will be back. Let’s build a lead and not play catch-up. Go shopping Jason!

  10. Tucker Says:

    Brutal loss 😔

  11. ElioT Says:

Don’t the Bucs have to decide to pick up CK’s 5th year option this season?

  12. Kevin Says:

We just have to sign somebody

  13. Tony Says:

We’ll probably just bring Desmond Watson back.

  14. Rod stewart Says:

    Christian Wilkins please.

  15. Tony Says:

BRING BACK WARREN SAPP & START HIM!

  16. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Maybe Roberts can build on last night

  17. Bucsfan Says:

Has Desmond Watson made weight yet?

  18. Tony Says:

    @Rod Stewart

SIGN ROD STEWART. Right now Maggie May would probably have a good day on them if she was playing against them.

  19. Durango 95 Says:

The likely hood of drafting an IDL early just took a dramatic upturn. Vita isn’t getting any younger so might as well grab two.

  20. RaShad Says:

    Christian Wilkins

  21. Coburn Says:

No way does Desmond Watson come back. The guy was still too heavy to have any kind of practice. He’s still a huge unknown even if he lost more weight.

  22. Tony Says:

    ALBERT HAYNESWORTH!

  23. Fred McNeil Says:

I knew it the second i saw it. Gerald McCoy had a problem with his pecs too. Crappy news.

  24. Bucswin Says:

    Watson!

  25. Robert Says:

Jimmy Jack Funk is available . He had 13 1/2 sacks 2 years ago.

  26. Fred McNeil Says:

Albert. Haynsworth…I had high hopes for him. Fat slob!

  27. Drdneast Says:

The Bucs are millions below the cap limit. If your serious about reaching the Super Bowl go shopping for a DT and OLB, Riddick isn’t cutting it. See what the Giants want for Brian Burns.

  28. Fred McNeil Says:

Jimmy Jack Funk, it’s a dunk dunk dunk!

  29. Tony Says:

    @Fred McNeil

I’m not being serious about any of this.

  30. Bojim Says:

Haye to lose him. He was going to tear it up. Get well soon. I think we still have some good players. Platoon them and there’ll fresh legs all game. Other team will be tired by the 4th.

  31. Fred McNeil Says:

Drdneast: who can we bring in? I guess they’ll think of somebody. Kancy is … Was…unique. how do you say ” this zucks” in French? Zeessee vaccuumes?

  32. Marky mark Says:

    sign Godzilla

  33. RagingBrisket Says:

What’s the boss have to say about our kicker and our lousy special teams overall? Don’t win too many games with that embarrassing performance last night by ST.

  34. Go dawgs Says:

Kancey should be bubble wrapped . They guy is a porcelain doll….its become a problem.

  35. Curse of Gruden Says:

Sign Watson. That’s like bringing in two dudes.

  36. Larrd Says:

Maybe if he said “a rotation” it would sound more optimistic. It sucks no Kancey, but the depth seems a lot better than offensive line.

I thought Hall and Gaines played very well Monday. Vea was great and is one of the best in the league. The rookie seemed okay, too. I was excited they drafted him and he seems promising. Brewer played okay at the end of last year, if I recall. That’s not a bad rotation.

  37. FlumundaCheese Says:

I’m sure Licht sounds dejected too…because they did nothing substantial to fix the pass rush. We just figured third time’s the charm, eventually Calijah will stay healthy and Yaya will figure out how to rush the passer. Strategery.

  38. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

We got Brewer from the Houston XFL team, he had 14 tackles and 2 sacks in 160 snaps for us last year. The depth we don’t have lol

  39. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Gotta agree with Sly Pirate. Kancey wasn’t all that.

  40. Bucsfan Says:

Braswell is a clueless wonder and he will loaf a lot , not much to see there.

  41. callingoutthelies Says:

Every team is losing people. Look at5 starting Qbs going down. No excuses.

  42. Kayla Says:

I watched Hall every play he was in during the 2nd half, he looked pretty good, getting off blocks and hustling. I expect him to at least equal his 5.5 sacks from last season with more playing time. And rookie Roberts shows some promise too (he even shared a sack with LVD). Between them we can survive without a catastrophic drop off.

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

Make something happen Licht. Find a practice squad player on another team. Defense needs to continue to improve.

  44. Mistermarty Says:

Bring Back Wil Gholston, he played well last year and is versatile. Plus he won a super bowl and is a quality man.

  45. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

    Bring back Suh!

  46. LouisFriend Says:

    Tony Says:

    ALBERT HAYNESWORTH!

Some of you hillbilly football fan wannabe’s have no clue about what you’re comparing the Kancey to.

Haynesworth quit on his team during a season by faking an injury after he got paid.

Every Bucs fan on this site should call out your BS for being so stupid about your football history. And for comparing someone who was hurt in-game, through no fault of his own – to a festering slob of a human being.

Kancey may end up being a bust, but he’s going under the knife because he was on the field balling for his team. Show some respect for that if nothing else.

  47. Buc king Says:

    Next man up

  48. Adrian Says:

No need to sign anyone. Time for guys to step up.
Yaya. Haason. Gaines. Logan. Nelson. Braswell. Robinson. Licht put faith in drafting / signing this guys. Show me.
Izie. Winfield. Morrison. McCollum. Parish. Tykee

  49. Defense Rules Says:

That photo of Logan Hall makes him look quite a bit heavier (a good thing) than the 283 lbs the Bucs list him at (same as when we drafted him). Kancey was only 280 lbs when we drafted him, and is probably about the same today (only 6’0″ tall as compared to Hall’s 6’6″).

  50. BucU Says:

Kancey sucks. He’ll barely be missed. After next year he’ll be gone.

  51. garro Says:

Thinking Brewer is called up if anyone. He knows the defense and he has flashed a bit.

  52. orlbucfan Says:

Kancey hasn’t been on the field inn enough games for this fan to have an opinion. He’s glass and he breaks too much.

  53. Capt.Tim Says:

Hope Kancey recovers soon. Hate to see anyone get hurt.
But if the Bucs were counting on Kancey, they ignored the facypt that you can’t count on him. He is a little guy, playing in the land of Giants.
He’s always hurt. He’s always gonna get hurt.

It’s too little to play Dline in the NFL.
The Bucs would be better served trying to get 20lbs off him, while he’s recovering. Then see if he can be a pass rushing linebacker.

Putting his hand on the ground, will just keep his butt on the IR list
