Rookie Playcallers Clash

September 15th, 2025

Josh Grizzard has bragging rights on the line.

So Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley is a rookie in his gig just like the Bucs’ Josh Grizzard.

In fact, Caley was interviewed by Tampa Bay in January and Joe wasn’t too happy about it.

What’s so special about Caley? He was the Rams’ tight ends coach and passing game coordinator last year. That didn’t help him against the Rams last week. Caley knew the defense he was facing with the Texans and mustered just nine points.

Houston was 2-for-9 on third down and looked awful on offense.

Joe’s been listening to a lot of chatter out of Houston in advance of tonight’s game, and Joe’s heard strong sentiment claiming 42-year-old Caley, who had never called plays in a real game, just needed a week to settle in and Houston will be fine tonight against the Bucs.

That may be true, but then what does that say for Grizzard, who needed only a couple of series last week to find his footing?

Bucs defensive coordinator/head coach Todd Bowles outsmarted the Falcons’ playcaller last week, another guy from the Rams’ coaching tree. So Joe would be very surprised if Caley turns into a wizard tonight against the Bucs and Bowles, especially with a second-rate receiving corps and without his starting center.

That doesn’t mean the Texans offense will get shut down, but it’s unlikely to be able to match the Bucs’ firepower.

Stroud is going to SHRED this soft pass defense that Todd is in love with

  2. ocala Says:

If Graham can hold up at left tackle, I think the Bucs will be fine tonight.

I think the Bucs win this game by quite a bit.

  4. Bucman Says:

Just need to pass occasionally on first down to mix it up a bit. Don’t get predictable.

  5. Lunchmeat Says:

Makeshift OLs might have a lot to do with both showings.
Will we be going with the same line tonight? Last I looked, Goedeke was questionable with an ankle?

  6. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

Stay away from the soft zone, Todd and the Bucs should be just fine. You have corners whose strength is press/man coverage. Let them do what they do best and let Winfield and Tykee Smith clean up anything deep. Anything of a pass rush tilts this in the Bucs favor.

  7. jcscycles Says:

Questionable with a foot. More than likely he will play.
