Film Bonding For Josh Grizzard And Baker Mayfield

September 12th, 2025

These two don’t just dress alike.

Praise for Baker Mayfield usually comes in the form of respect for his rifle arm, tough-guy mentality, vocal leadership and the always popular “moxie” love.

But those close to Mayfield like to point out his preparation and how his study focus is underappreciated.

Offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard went there this week on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

The rookie playcaller noted how Mayfield is quick to know what went wrong on a play as soon as it happens and lauded Mayfield for being more eager to grind the film room than most.

“And then we both, of course, love watching tape and being able to try to exploit weaknesses in the defense and who we want to attack,” Grizzard said.

“It is one of those things where you would assume guys like to watch a lot of tape, but it’s just not the case across the league. So the fact that he loves watching tape and preparing and not only preparing for what he’s expecting to see, ‘but hey, what if they do this? What are we gonna get to?’ It’s just not guaranteed but it’s something that he hangs his hat on and is really cool to see.”

Mayfield has played for so many offensive coordinators that he’s approaching Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh McCown territory. So by default almost, Mayfield is a well-rounded student of the game. But it’s great to hear how he hasn’t lost his love of film study and is hungry to get deep in the weeds to win games.

Joe wonders to whom Grizzard was referring when he said guys around the league don’t like watching a lot of film?

If Grizzard was referring to Dolphins quarterbacks and receivers from the seven years Grizzard spent in Miami, then Joe has some ideas.

Probably Kyler Murray is who he is referring to after the whole clause in his contract that he needs to study. Funny enough, Kyler is a friend of Baker’s and they are both avid gamers. There could be a correlation between Baker’s level of skill going up and watching film since he had a kid. Whereas before he probably had time to game, but with a kiddo around there isn’t a lot of time to game so he watches film instead LOL. Just a theory.

Lets face it Baker is co offensive coordinator at this point and the lead member. Once Baker signed off on the winning TD play Grizzard just nodded his head.

Please don’t get away from the quick pass “dink and dunk” for the perceived need of chuck plays. Our O was awesome last year. Don’t fix what isn’t broken. Last week seemed like less motion and more Canales type offense.

  4. WutdaBucisthis Says:

Yeah I gotta agree with @74 here. Although I’m a big fan of open air offense, gotta get those guys in motion and sprinkle some dink n dunk in there. IMO they need to get the running game going… BUT NOT on 1st down.
    Go Bucs

  5. Dr. Bucenstein Says:

Well stated. Don’t forget to use some of what was effective last season

  6. Aqualung Says:

    Two words.

    Rachaad White.

Get him some first down throws, with he and Bucky on the field at the same time. Three touches for him is just stupid, and he is the best blitz blocker of his RB mates.

That pony package worked very well last year. Crazy talk I know.

  7. PewterStiffArm Says:

Hmm, Baker the future O.C. Very interesting Joe.

  8. orlbucfan Says:

Gotta give Feisty Bake credit: He’s a team guy. Lay off the run-up-the-middle on first down, Grizzard. You’ll be doing your team, fellow coaches, and us fans a big favor. Even Coen was a little too fond of that stinker. It only works when you mix plays up, and confuse the opponent. And please. please, please don’t start the game with it!

  9. ballwasher61 Says:

Yeah that run up the middle is set up with other plays. White had a good carry up the middle and was a shoe string tackle away from breaking it. I’m sure the line had to be seen in live action to figure out what would and wouldn’t work. Work in progress and as long as the needle is trending up we should be fine. No need to panic this early in the year. Maybe it’s me but the team seems a little calmer, a little more we’ll get it done and really believing that mentally. Quiet confidence is a great thing.

throw to open the run game

  11. ChiBuc Says:

“Film bonding,” sounds like super glue or something nasty

  12. Jacob Says:

I chalk up the week 1 offensive struggles to Baker struggling to find a rhythm after a lack of live bullets in preseason, and offensive line chemistry with that lineup. I expect Baker to come out sharper in Week 2, but the O-line to struggle a bit worse against that Texans defense.

  13. J Says:

Interesting. Well, Grizzard has only been at 2 different NFL franchises (Panthers in 2012 doing operations, and Dolphins) so the list of suspects os quite small.

Panthers fired woke staff for Kirk Comments.

  15. HC Grover Says:

Good Panthers fired woke communications director for awful disgusting Kirk Comments. Go Panthers Good Job. THIS must stop.

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

You really wanna go there Grover?

  17. infomeplease Says:

I’ll also play back seat OC! Pass on 2 out of 3 first downs. Set up the run with the quick passes and use motion management re too. MNF on the road!!! LFG!!!

  18. infomeplease Says:

    Play action!!!

  19. JA Says:

Where are some of you getting this ‘Bombs Away Baker’ info?
He averaged only 5.2 yards per attempt against Atlanta, including the two long ones to Egbuka.
If you want him to dink and dunk more often, he might need to throw a few laterals to please you folks.

  20. Larrd Says:

Collaboration is almost always the way to go! Hard to collaborate when you are being taught a new system.

  21. Mveal2006 Says:

Maybe trask didnt study film like baker. Years on the bench may have been too much for him. Or Palmer, or an message to culp

Who’s Kirk? Some political yahoo. Spare us. This is a sports blog last time I checked.
