Ian Rapoport Has A Chris Godwin Update

September 7th, 2025

Chris Godwin at training camp this summer.

UPDATED: So now we are starting to get clarity on what’s going on with Bucs receiver Chris Godwin.

Godwin has had two surgeries on an ankle that was destroyed last year in an ugly October home loss to the Crows seen on national TV.

Godwin hasn’t practiced since. He was a fixture at each training camp practice. Unlike other players who were rehabbing on a side field, Godwin was in street clothes, offering support and often helping Emeka Egbuka transition to the NFL.

This morning, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport had a Godwin update. It seems the month of October is a target date for his return.

Rapoport’s intel was vague. The Bucs hope Godwin practices “soon” — later an NFL Network graphic said he could be on the field later this week — and the Bucs are looking at anywhere from a Week 5 game at Seattle to a Week 7 game at Detroit as a window for Godwin.

Joe just wants Godwin back when he’s ready to go. No need to rush him and have him re-injure his ankle. If that means he doesn’t come back until Thanksgiving, so be it.

Godwin is with the Bucs today cheering the team on at the Georgia Dome.

Ease him in and let the rookie get lots of snaps. Hopefully come playoff time, even if Chris is 50% of what he was last year, we will be a beast on offense.

  2. Famu_Rattler Says:

    Hey Chris,
whenever you feel you are ready, that will be okay with me. I want you back today but I trust when you do come back, you will be ready to rock-and-roll. I will be wearing your #14 jersey today and every game day until that day you are on field again. Go Bucs. Go Bucs. Go…….

  3. Hodad Says:

Could be JMac ready by than also. We got guys to hold down the fort

  4. Truth be Told Says:

I get it, but why wasn’t he on the PuP list then to start the season?

  5. infomeplease Says:

A Buc W today will help get a healthy CG14 back when he’s rally ready not when he’s available.

  6. BucsFan81 Says:

Can’t wait for Godwin to get back. Don’t rush him back. He will be fresh for the second half of the season

  7. firethecannons Says:

Good but will believe it when I see it, hoping the best for him, wonder why his hardware needed tightening?

  8. Joe Says:

Could be JMac ready by than also.

    Joe wouldn’t bank on that.

  9. Tackleblockwin Says:

Three proven players out on the offense. Time for others to step up. Let’s’ go!

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

Still shudder thinking about a dislocated ankle! And so bad it required surgery! Ouch!
I hope he returns healthy and back to his normal level of play.
    Not something to rush

  11. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Truth be told

ICBW, but I believe if he’s on PUP he can’t practice with the team. That and he had to be on the 53 to guarantee his contract.

  12. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Whenever we get Chris back it’ll be right on time. Add to that we’ll be getting JMac back around the same time and this offense should be getting an injection of juice mid-season. The guys we have now are going to have to make it happen in the meantime.

  13. Obvious Says:

This is why the JM injury sucks

  14. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

Is he on the PUP list or IR (whichever prevents him from playing the first several weeks) and opens up a spot for someone else on the 53?

  15. Aqualung Says:

Roquan Smith should blow out both knees in the first half of tonight’s game and be done for his career.

  16. Buddha Says:

Betting line is now atlanta-1 over Tampa. In Lansing now the favorite. I’m off Atlanta. Late moves like this are not normally smart money.

  17. Bartow Buc Says:

Sure need him back as soon as possible. But like you say …… not too soon. I’m sure the trainers will be very cautious and try to avoid re injury.

Go Bucs !! Beat the Falcons !!

  18. orlbucfan Says:

Good news. Thanks, joes. Go Chris and Bucs!!

  19. heyjude Says:

Feel bad for Godwin Two surgeries is a lot. Rest is still best.

  20. Vanessa Anne Says:

    @Truth Be Told

If he’s on the PUP list he isn’t allowed to practice with the team until he comes off of it.

By keeping him on the roster, they can ease him back into practice and ideally he’ll be ready to play sooner.

Personally, in this case, I’m fine with him taking as much time as he needs even if that means Thanksgiving.

  21. LongSeason Says:

That was a devastating injury. I’m surprised he would be back this season at all.
Just be smart with with Godwin. Don’t bring him back until he’s ready.

  22. Scotty Mack Says:

I just need him to come back soon and stop taking up space on my fantasy bench. My league doesn’t let you put players on IR.

Just kidding, CG. Get well and kick ass when you’re back.
