NBC: Kyle Trask Had “Plenty Of Chances To Stay On The Roster”

August 28th, 2025

National reaction.

Myles Simmons doesn’t want to hear it from the Gators Kyle Trask fans whining that the Bucs never gave him a chance.

Simmons, of ProFootballTalk.com, appeared with the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk on PFT Live, seen on Peacock and YouTube. He told Florio it is a crock to suggest Trask was wronged and all Trask had to do was outplay in practice and preseason games either Baker Mayfield or his new backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, and Trask would still be on the Bucs’ roster.

Teams don’t toss better quarterbacks overboard, Simmons said firmly.

Trask was released this week.

Florio suggested Trask had scant chance to prove his worth. Simmons didn’t buy it.

“I mean, I would kind of disagree with he never got a chance to play,” Simmons said. “He did have a chance to play. He could have beaten out Baker Mayfield. And he didn’t.”

“I mean, it’s true. You know, you you have a chance to earn a spot. And if you don’t outperform your competition, then you don’t play. And that’s it.”

Even if there was a twisted conspiracy to hold Trask back, which makes zero sense, Simmons referenced what Dan Campbell said about Hendon Hooker, a quarterback he too released this past week, suggesting there is a shelf life teams give a player to develop before it’s time to turn the page.

“[The Bucs] had Kyle Trask for his entire rookie contract. They brought him back for another season this year. And if you’re not performing well enough to be the backup at this point, and you think that there’s another player who’s out there who’s going to be a better option for you to [be a] backup, like, that’s it’s not good,” Simmons said.

“I think there are plenty of chances to stay on the roster as a backup. [Trask] just didn’t earn it.”

Simmons went on to say that a quarterback has to earn the trust of his coaches with at least performance on the practice field. Apparently, Trask did not. Gee, Joe wonders where he heard that angle about trust in Trask?

Florio noted the worst thing about the Trask era is that the Bucs sure could have used the second-round pick they spent on him in 2021 — for a player who could have been on the field right away helping lead the Bucs to back-to-back titles.

In hindsight, current Pro Bowl Houston receiver Nico Collins, a third-round pick in 2021, would have been an interesting fit as the Bucs struggled with receiver depth that season thanks to injuries and Antonio Brown losing his mind.

  1. SB~LV Says:

    🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱

  2. Bucccnasty Says:

I woulda loved Nico Collins instead of Trashk, but then we wouldn’t be where we are today… no baker. No egbuka. And prbly no 3rd Super Bowl in 2025.

This is going to be one of those great years to be a Bucs Fan, embrace it

  3. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    Hindsight is 20/20.

Drafting a developmental QB in 2021 made perfect sense. It was a perfect incubator model with the GOAT at QB to mentor, no pressure on Trask, great SB team, etc. Almost exactly like GB’s drafting of Aaron Rogers with Brett Favre at QB.

Licht just missed on Trask. It happens.

  4. Truth be Told Says:

Trask is Garbage at the NFL level or he would still be on the Team. Is that confusing to anyone? SMH

  5. ATLBuc Says:

If he never had a chance to play with the first team, he never had a chance to win the job.

  6. Fan of the South Says:

Regardless of who they kept should all the starting QB’s go down in the NFCS the Falcons and Panthers are both in a better position with the Saints being a push.

  7. Smashsquatch Says:

His ball had no zip and his only chance of sticking was to have plus accuracy, which was a minus. Add in the happy feet and it became an easy choice. Best of luck to you Kyle, you’re no stranger to overcoming odds.

  8. Oneilbuc Says:

Trask should have been the starter and y’all know it if Pete Carol, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Shanhan was our head coach he would have started. The game and competition has changed now days. It’s more politics in sports now days than it was back then. And I would also throw Andy Reid and Belichit in there as well. And what all those coaches have in common all of them have Superbowls Todd Bowles is not a Superbowl type of coach because of his style. But he came to the right team because most of our fans don’t care about championships or Superbowls as long as we win a trash division they’re satisfied and happy. Even the Joe’s never put up articles asking can we win a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield and Todd Bowles because they don’t have the confidence that they can. Lol 🤣🤣 but they love to brag on Jason Licht who has now missed on 2 whole drafts 2016 and 2021.

  9. BucVoyager Says:

Is Florio a Gator? Only explanation for that take.

  10. Oneilbuc Says:

Truth. That’s not true Jamle Dean is trash and he’s our starter at CB . It’s a reason why Bowles didn’t want him to play with the starters he knew what happened in 2023 . Lol 🤣🤣 the Joe’s know as well that’s why the fan base was split between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask because of what happened in training camp. That ain’t got nothing to do with the college he went to and the Joe’s know it that’s the excuse they used to cover up the truth about that fake competition. Remember the source that Ira got who said Baker would be the starter regardless? And at the time Baker had 8 picks to Kyle Trask 1 lol 🤣🤣🤣.

  11. Truth be Told Says:

Hey Hater Oneilbuc do facts matter to you?

The Bucs currently lead the NFL in homegrown players on the roster. 82.5% of their roster started with the Bucs. Ravens, Bills, Bengals and Colts are the other teams over 70% of their Roster

  12. Bojim Says:

Trask has left the building. Good luck Kyle.

  13. Bucsfan Says:

So let me make sure I have this right. Buccaneer coaches said Mayfield barely beat out Trask in the QB competition when Mayfield came to town-the phrase by a whisker was the one I remember , but now Trask is not competent enough to be a backup?????

  14. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

So the conspiracy is that JL wasted a draft pick on Trask, but he really was great but they conspired against proving themselves correct with a wasted draft pick?

Sorry, I am running out of string to put on my wall to tie this all together.

  15. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Also, woulda coulda on draft picks can be done with any team or GM with any draft.

We could have had Will Levis. Guess we will have to live with being stuck with Calijah Kancey

  16. callingoutthelies Says:

no knees water under the bridge will be gone along with his good buddy (no competition Bowles) Chucky help us

  17. Hodad Says:

Kyle who? Bout time we put the Trask to sleep. I’d rather talk about why the Bucs haven’t signed anyone vet like Alexander to bolster their edge rush. Didn’t he have more sacks last year than both our starters? Bet he’d like to go against Detroit when we play them. Time to put the Trask talk to rest.

  18. Stallworth Says:

The reason Trask is not on this team anymore has nothing to do with how well he can play on the field. This is a proven fact. Bazelak made it to the practice squad and Trask did not. Is Trask worse than Bazelak? No.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

Now if we can only get rid of this waste of a HC then we’d be great!

  20. BucforLife Says:

Joe’s fsu fan boy coming out with these articles of Trask and trolling him as always

  21. Fred McNeil Says:

I wish Kyle success wherever he goes, but a jag is a jag.

  22. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Yep I also blame everyone else for all my life failures too waaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  23. miken Says:

I am a gator homer… but this move was 2 years over due. To be a 2nd round pick and have the luxury to sit for 2 yrs behind brady w nothing expected and you just get to learn… goodness

  24. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Just read that Dave Canales picked up a waived QB for his practice squad. Hendon Hooker.

    Case closed

  25. ModHairKen Says:

Why are people still talking about Trask?

  26. StormyInFl Says:

Kyle Trask did not beat Mayfield. That is a fact. Doesn’t matter what the fans think they saw two years ago – there’s a lot more that goes into that evaluation that the fans do not see. How was he in the QB room/film study? Could he read defenses?

As someone else has said – Canales picked up Hendon Hooker. Could have had Trask, but he passed. Vegas traded for Pickett. Only one left who knows Trask is Coen.

  27. ATRAIN Says:

Ok let me get this straight

Myles Simmons stated,” Teams don’t toss better quarterbacks overboard, Simmons said firmly.”

Ummm the Bucs just gave up a QB who knew the system and was on team for 4 years for a QB THE NFL tossed to the streets.

Ummm then this move makes zero sense. Bucs grab a QB thrown overboard for one on board?

  28. BakerFan Says:

Oneilbuc how does it feel living on the STUPID ISLAND with the 3 other Traskies on this site….. Totally amazing that you think Trask is a better QB than Mayfield. Just one question, why has no other team picked him up yet if he is STARTER QUALITY? Raiders with Spytek and Brady who knew Trask went with Pickett, Patriots went with DeVito. Panthers have yet came calling, neither have the Saints. Not one even took him on as a Practice team QB. But you and all the other Traskies think he is better than Mayfield.

I really don’t think people on here hate Trask, but they hate people like you making stupid comments.

  29. Durango 95 Says:

JBF thinking..hmmmm..I wonder how many times I can go to the well on this story.

  30. infomeplease Says:

He said, she said? Give it up. Pick up this conversation in one years time. If KT2 was s starting for an NFL team then that means something. If not, perhaps in another league. That also means something! In one year from now!

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

Reminder to Licht, no more gator quarterbacks, no more FSU kickers

I heard that he was going to be released but I never read that he actually was released. And then there’s the injured shoulder thing.

  33. 813bucboi Says:

enough with the trask articles joe…

we all know you’re an fsu fan….you did the same thing when BA released VHGIII…

can we get some articles on the saints, falcons and panthers instead…bucs player development like tykee smith, e.roberts, l.hall, e.klein….

    lets talk about the season….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  34. LakelandBuc Says:

Jason Licht love to hold on to these players he draft
He don’t care if they are performing or underperforming
He’s more concerned with his draft record
He’s has a poor draft history, a few hits, and more misses

Why would a GM give a useless QB, a second contract?
It makes no sense, no sense at all

  35. a-bomb Says:

These coaches and GM’s are paid to win games. If you don’t win games you don’t have a job. Does anyone really think that a GM or coach would not play the player that gives them the best chance to win when their job literally rides on the decision? I guess this is the world we live in- conspiracy theories abound and common sense does not. You don’t like the outcome? Blame a conspiracy.

  36. Baking with Grizz Says:

It seems to be telling when the Raiders, Canales and Coen have a chance to get him now and all your hear is silence. Hmmmm

  37. Jim in AR Says:

a-bomb, thanks for pointing out the BS. Reality is uncomfortable to some, especially if outcomes don’t match their expectations. But at least sports conspiracists are relatively harmless. Not so when conspiracists have political power.

  38. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    It was a wasted pick.

  39. HC Grover Says:

Trask is laughing all the way to the bank.

  40. Pmike Says:

You mean Trasknis laughing all the way to his HC coaching job?

  41. Pmike Says:

    *high school coaching job

  42. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Trask had plenty of time to play with the 1st team in practice, and apparently he didn’t perform well.

If you don’t at least perform well in practice, there’s no reason to think he would perform well with the 1st team in games.

Trask is gone, Trask fanboys. Get over it. He sucks.

  43. LakelandBuc Says:

Kyle Trask sucks, and the GM that (wasted a 2nd round draft pick) on him, and signed him to a second contract

Sucks just as much as Trask
    They both sucks

One has a job (albeit on the PS), one does not. What does that say about your theory?

  45. Aqualung Says:

NFL teams are clamoring, falling over each other, to sign Kyle’s Trashk. In fact he’s been promoted to the active roster of…..of….of…..

    Raiders? No.

    Panthers? No.

    Jaguars? No.

If he was as great as his fan club pontificates he’d have a job. He doesn’t.

He sucks. Had sucked. Has sucked. Will suck. Will have sucked.

    Fact.

  46. Burl Says:

Kyle Trask spent 2 with Tom Brady & he just never really developed. I’m a Gator Fan & wish Kyle all the best where ever he goes 🙂🐊

You said they couldn’t win the Super Bowl with Brady also, so nobody/very few people trust your judgment.

  50. Aqualung Says:

Who has signed Trask? Cmon Trashkophiles. Who signed him? If he’s that great why is he unemployed?

  51. unbelievable Says:

I see Oneilbuc is still as delusional as ever. Some things never change apparently. Just like Trask never playing consistently.

  52. Capt.Tim Says:

Just affirmation of what I’ve said since the day he was drafted.
Kyle Trask was a huge waste of a draft pick.
Not only was he an absolute waste of a 2nd round pick, but even worse, he took up a roster spot that a talented young QB could have occupied.

4 years later, we have nothing but wasted time. If we had signed a good QB- he would be ready to set in if needed.
Trask seemed like a good guy. But that’s not what we are talking about.
Drafting him was a mistake. Keeping him was a mistake.

Just a real black mark on our front office, for refusing to admit they made a big mistake, and moving on.

  53. Aqualung Says:

If only Jameis Winston had been paid a bag to stay in Tampa in 2020. Because his career his blossomed since he left. Oh, wait.

At least we wouldn’t suffer through the Todd Bowles bi-coaching era, but would have no Super Bowl win or playoffs to talk about. Jason would be gone and who knows what schmoe would’ve run the team into the ground?!

  54. My Momma Says:

“He didn’t have a chance to play. He could have beaten out Baker Mayfield. And he didn’t.”
According to Joe, Trask outperformed Mayfield in the so-called QB competition. The Camp Notes Tribe trusts in the quality camp notes that Joe provides.
Look at the number of picks Mayfield threw in that “competition” as compared to Kyle. The number of picks by Mayfield continues to tell the story year in and year out. He’s a turnover machine.

  55. cmurda Says:

I hate hate hate when the Monday morning QB’s talk about hey, we could have used that 2nd round pick on so and so. We could say that every draft and we would have the most Pro Bowl of Pro Bowl rosters but that’s just plain dumb and it’s far from reality. The fact is Trask was picked right where he was supposed to. It didn’t work out. It happens quite often. I don’t see the talking heads speaking about the Ali Marpet pick. In fact, Licht was railroaded for making that pick late in the 2nd round. I believe we even traded up to pick him but I’m not sure about that. It’s safe to say Licht dominated as he usually does. I don’t want to hear about the Trask nonsense. We expected a solid backup but we got a guy that is just not NFL material. There’s no way I feel we would have won a game with Trask but I believe we can with Bridgewater.

  56. TBbolts Says:

Can’t argue facts. And the fact is Trask never saw one meaningful snap. They (bowels) chose to trot out a banged up mayfield for his own reasons. What those personal reasons are we’ll never know. Even during a 6 game skid. The FACT is Trask never got his chance. And now Joe will not have his favorite topic to write fluff about. Either way, season ends on a baker mayfield turnover. Might not even be a pick.. probably another snap fumble from joes favorite “franchise quarterback”

  57. cmurda Says:

Lol @ My Momma. You’re trolling. No way you believe anything you just typed.

  58. Lightningvinny Says:

Bold prediction that in this upcoming year Trask will be a starting QB ,, for Birmingham

  59. BayouBullet Says:

The reporting on this site perpetuated the false narrative that Trask regularly outplayed Baker in practice. Complete journalistic malfeasance
This is nonsense. Joe’s archives are there for all to read. –Joe

  60. Davyboy Says:

Yes abomb there are those that actually believe that if you can believe it. It’s political nowadays 🙄 winning is a distant second

  61. Davyboy Says:

It’s funny how some actually think Kyle Trask would be better than Baker. He only ranks 1st, 2nd and 3rd in about every quarterback stat there is since coming here 2 years ago. Kyle would have to rank 1st & 2nd in every stat and I seriously don’t see it ever happening.

  62. orlbucfan Says:

Sure wish we could dump the Barfo we-hate-Bowles yahoos on here along with Trask.

  63. Davyboy Says:

The ignorance and lies never cease to amaze.

    INTERCEPTIONS 2 YEARS
    Mayfield-26
    Mahomes-25
    Allen-24
    Goff-24
    Smith-24
    Purdy-23

    LOST FUMBLES 2024
    Will Levis-6
    Drake Maye-6
    Lamar Jackson-5
    Joe Burrow-5
    Jalen Hurts-5
    Baker-2
Baker is tied for 18th place with his 2 lost fumbles, mmm

When you look at the whole picture it isn’t as bad as some would have you believe. Turns out when you handle the ball every play things happen.

  64. matthew a veal Says:

a different person making the same argument doesnt answer all the questions.

trask was renewed with a million bucks guaranteed. why do that for a guy you didnt trust?

doing this in the offseason made more sense if you were going to do it.
jason is good, did trask promise to work on something and not come through like watson? did he truly get injured from all the beatings he was taking?

was his million just to take abuse so mayfield and the defense could all be better/

its like michael jordan pointed out with different words, success will answer the questions

  65. Brandon Says:

Speaking of Hendon Hooker… there were so many people on JoeBucs fan begging for us to overdraft the 25 year old, frequently injured, and moderately successful in six collegiate seasons QB. As expected, he was not as advertised.

  66. UKBuccaneer Says:

Once again for the hard of thinking. If you believe Trask won the competition and was benched regardless, then you’re suggesting that an NFL coaching team actively and knowingly sabotaged their own team at the most important position for three years straight.

I have one question for you:

    Why?

  67. StormyInFl Says:

Some of us “Monday Morning QBs” hated the pick when it was made. Said then that the Bucs should have drafted guys that could be used to maximize the Brady Window. Instead they overdraft a project QB from a school notorious for producing lousy pro QBs. Fail then. Epic fail now.

The only thing I’m puzzled by is why even resign him at all, unless FA was a case of going home “ugly and early”…. Bridgewater was still coaching then.

In some way, I applaud the Bucs for recognizing early on that Trask was a stiff, and rather than trot him out there because he was a 2nd round pick, they course corrected (Mayfield, Bridgewater).

And finally, if the Mayfield/Trask competition wasn’t one – so what? It’s pretty obvious the Bucs made the right call. Personally, I believe it was, but Trask would have had to win convincingly. That didn’t happen. He had an opportunity to compete for the job, but he would have had to blow Mayfield away. Nowhere was that ever stated that he did. And only outperformed Mayfield based on some camp notes the press released. How much didn’t they see? Probably a lot.

  68. MostlyPeacefulTraskMob Says:

LOL what a bunch of BS.

  69. MostlyPeacefulTraskMob Says:

Trask threw for over 70% in two of the three preseason games.

He didn’t play his way out of Tampa.

    What garbage.

  70. Trask To The Future Says:

NO TRUST IN TRASK SO THEY RESIGNED HIM.

    Makes zero sense.

  71. Trask To The Future Says:

MostlyPeacefulTraskMob – it IS very possible that he consistently sucked in practice and gave them cause for concern. He played pretty well in preseason but he’s had regular practices during camp and maybe didn’t look as sharp as they expected him to look by now. I’m a realist and don’t rule that out as to what happened.

BUT… it does seem like he got a raw deal with the “public” opportunities he was given (or lack thereof) to be able to play behind the starting OLine either in garbage time of games or in preseason to show other teams or just the fans in general to see what he could do with the starters.

  72. Big Red Says:

Drafting Trask in the 2nd round will go down as one of the many misses in Jason Licht’s drafting cycle:

    Vernon Hargreaves
    Noah Spence
    Roberto Aguayo
    Matt Gay
    MJ Stewart
    Austin Seferian Jenkins
    The Punter
    Kyle Trask

I won’t add OJ to the list because injuries are unpredictable, but we could have had Dalvin Cook. Imagine if we didn’t totally whiff on half of those positions. Other than a kicker, those players weren’t even good enough to hold a roster spot on another NFL team.

  73. Oneilbuc Says:

Joe . That was before they added 2 hall of famers and a pro bowl runningback. What happened when the 2 hall of famers left he sucked and BL was the scapegoat. Lol 🤣 facts

  74. HC Grover Says:

Young and Williams come to mind. Oh well it is just NFL Feetball.

  75. Bartow Buc Says:

I wish Kyle Trask the best and hope we don’t have to play against him in the future!!

Now it time to move on and support our Buccaneers!!

    Go Bucs 2025 !!!

  76. Trask To The Future Says:

    Big Red,

Every team has high draft picks that don’t pan out. It’s extremely common in the NFL. But Licht & team seem to have learned from their mistakes and have figured out a more successful strategy in the last few drafts. Let’s hope it continues.

  77. SMH Says:

Trask was a Bruce Arians pick, Bowles wasn’t willing to risk his job on a qb he didn’t draft and went with Mayfield because he had experience; there never was a competition. Bridgwater was here for 5 minutes and managed to get a full quarter with the starters in a game, Trask was never given 5 plays with the starters. One of the few plays he did get, Godwin dropped a perfect ball in the endzone and Mayfield limped back onto the field to ensure Trask didn’t have any additional chances to prove himself.

  78. cmurda Says:

@ Big Red. Wow. Another Jason Licht hater. It might behoove you to research the other GM’s picks . Jason has an incredible success rate proven by the amount of second contracts we have negotiated. That’s pretty rare in today’s NFL. But, by all means play Monday Morning QB and let us all know how Jason has no clue and that we could have had this guy, that guy. Come on man. I know you know your stuff. I’m a little surprised to see the list of bad picks and what could have been etc from you. It’s fun to read though. Gives me a few chuckles.

  79. cmurda Says:

You want to hear about a bad pick that deserves hate. Anthony Richardson. GM’s probably don’t or shouldn’t factor this in, but UF for some reason produces no NFL QB talent. More importantly, did these GM’s actually watch his games at Florida. He is incredibly athletic. The Gators won primarily on the ground and they were above average at best with him. His accuracy and decision making were always crap. That was a predictably horrible pick. Nice work Indy.

  80. sunny Says:

the joes have debunked that bs that trask beat baker in competition so many times i don’t know why you trask cultists keep repeating it. in the early days, when baker first got to the bucs.. trask might have performed slightly better in one or two practices, then did worse in the next one-as he should have when he had been with the team for years before baker and had at least some chemistry with the receivers. the issue was that baker continually improved with each practice and peaked at the right time when trask stayed inconsistent.

they signed him during this offseason because they thought he had improved enough to be a solid backup. when baker’s hand was hurt and trask took first team reps, he sucked and they panicked. teddy came in after two weeks and outperformed trask, and has actual nfl game and playoff experience that trask doesn’t and will never have.

not a single decision-maker that has experience with trask wants him even for their practice squad. not the raiders with spytek and brady, not the panthers, and not the jags. none of the bucs rivals want him even for their practice squads to provide insight into the bucs offense. that’s how bad he is.

“THIS IS NONSENSE. JOE’S ’s ARCHIVES ARE THERE FOR ALL TO READ. –JOE .”

What part of this can’t you understated???

This isn’t the 1st time he’s wrote this. So if he says there are articles that show that Trask regularly outplayed Baker in 2023 then why won’t you believe it??? You guys got some funny memories because I remember those
very articles that Trask was clearly outplaying him and I remember watching Bowles protect Mayfield by not playing him much that preseason.

Baker has been gifted every starting position he has had and if he was so great why was on the junk pile after 5 years??? The #1 reason Bowles chose him to start was to save his own job after giving the GOAT his only losing season, and yes, with his vastly greater starting experience Mayfield gave us a better chance to win.

You all need to get over yourselves. The proof is in the reading.

  82. SMH Says:

@sunny, how much did you spend on you Seminole tickets this year?

  83. Trask To The Future Says:

While we’re on the topic of UF doesn’t generate NFL talent…

One could easily argue that FSU hasn’t produced any star QBs in the NFL either. Brad Johnson won us a Super Bowl on arguably the best defense ever. His career overall was lackluster.

Ponder, Weinke, etc etc were all terrible. Winston was vastly overrated as a #1 overall draft pick.

Kyle Trask is a winner !! All of us Buccaneer fans will realize this in the near future. We will regret the Bridgewater decision very soon.

    Stand by

    Go Bucs 2025 !!

  85. callingoutthelies Says:

IF the really High IQ (LOL) head coach really wanted to know what TB had left he would have put him in with the uber drivers. put Kyle in with the ones and truely test both of them.

  86. BA’s Red Pen Says:

What team is Trask on again?

  87. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Keep embarrassing yourselves idiots.

  88. garro Says:

    Bull!

Good luck Kyle! Sign with someone who will give you a legit shot sir.

    Go Bucs!

  89. BucNWaterBoy Says:

Has anyone ever seen Trask throw 2 perfectly placed TD passes? Ever? Teddy Two Gloves did it in 1 preseason game. I am Gator fan, and I liked Trask. Never loved the guy, but I liked him. He was ok. He’s not going to lead a team to the SB. Just my 2 cents.
