“His Heart Rate Is Never Up”

August 13th, 2025

No. 1 seed?

So have the Bucs taken on the personality of their head coach?

Joe’s not referring to players enjoying Gladys Knight, trips to Publix, low-grade chocolate chip cookies, NBA games and going to bed early.

Joe’s pointing to Todd Bowles’ unflappable demeanor.

Bowles almost defines the term “even keel” as a head coach. And that excites former Bears Pro Bowl offensive lineman Kyle Long.

He thinks the Bucs are prepared for a deep playoff run, in large part because of the guy in charge.

“Todd Bowles. Pretty awesome, would love to play for that guy. Old school. There’s a reason these teams stick together year in and year out,” Long said on his Pushing The Pile podcast, a CBS production. “They have the ability to really just maintain their cool all the time.

“His heart rate is never up,” Long continued, referring to Bowles. “And I feel like that’s the Bucs. I mean, they’re in any game. That’s why they can go on the road and beat the Lions. That’s why I feel like they’re a team that can go and beat the Eagles at The Linc. And it doesn’t surprise me because they have fearless leaders at the receiver position, at the quarterback position, at the head coach position. I’m excited to watch this group. I’m just a huge Baker [Mayfield] fan.”

Co-host Mike Renner went on to make a case why the Bucs could be the No. 1 seed in the NFC, though Long and Renner are not calling the Bucs a Super Bowl team.

Bowles certainly captains a steady ship, but the Bucs certainly haven’t played consistent ball within a season under Bowles.

Joe looks for that to change this year, elimination of the midseason implosion. Under Bowles, the team has never had a winning record on Thanksgiving.

Joe thinks the Tampa Bay area would explode with excitement if the Bucs play solid ball from wire-to-wire this season. Maybe turn a 4-2 record into 7-4 and then 9-5 with three games remaining. That’s the kind of consistency Joe would love to see.

Why not us!!, lets do this gentleman!! I’m sick and tired of listening to these Eagle fans up hear talking about repeat!! Go Bucs

  2. First Last Says:

His heart rate should go up because mine sure does watching the up and downs of this season.

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

When you play in the weakest division in football and most of your divisional games are at the tail end of the season….

  4. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Chips ahoy catching some strays.

  5. LakelandBuc Says:

In order to be consistent as a team
You need consistency from your core players
That’s what we’ve been lacking , we need them every game

Derrick Brooks, and Ronde Barber never missed games
These players are the opposite, they never play every game

  6. Defense Rules Says:

I’d take that scenario in a heartbeat Joe. With our last 3 games against the Panthers, Dolphins & Panthers (again), we’d have a respectable chance to go 12-5. That SHOULD be enough to win the NFC South & make the playoffs. And if we’d been 7-4 earlier like you wrote, that’d mean we’d be ending the season on a 5-1 hot streak. Nice way to head into the playoffs.

  7. Hodad Says:

They need to find a pulse before the 4 game losing streaks start.

  8. View from 132 Says:

This will be a fun season. Bucs meet expectations – everyone is excited, boat parade.

They don’t meet expectations? The comments starting around Thanksgiving and going into the offseason… FIRE BOWLES, FIRE LICHT and PLAYER X, Y, Z SUCKS! SHOULD’VE DRAFTED “THE ROOKIE WHO HAD A GOOD YEAR” AND SIGNED “FREE AGENT WITH GOOD FANTASY STATS”

Plus I’m sure some real insightful comments from Rod.

  9. SlyPirate Says:

    STOP – BOWLES IS MEDIOCRE
We could do better and we could do worse.
    >Bowles has proven time and time again that gets outcoached by top coaches (ie Sean Payton).
    >Bowles cannot win Prime Time Game. He rarely rises to the occassion.
    >Bowles cannot sustain. Every year we have a midseason collapse.

Bowles also doesn’t change his defensive schemes per client, until the playoffs.

that will only happen IF baker eliminates his own midseason INT & Fumble implosion…

baker finished the year with 16INTs…from week6-week16 he tossed 13 INTs.. during those same weeks baker also had 10 of 13 fumbles..yeah we know he only “lost” 2 but those fumbles stopped momentum each time…

fix the INT/Fumble issue and the midseason slump will be solved

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

been saying since the draft i see at least 12wins!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    @813

There’s going to be at least 3 posters that are going to indirectly/directly call you a hater for stating these facts, those are no good here get’em outta here.

  13. Goldenbuc Says:

I’ve been riding with Bowles the entire time. If he does not at least get 12 wins I don’t think he’ll get us to the promise land and have to move on.

This team is stacked, regardless of injuries. Especially with Teddy two gloves now on it.

Unless our entire youthful O line collapses, keyword is youthful.

  14. Eckwood Says:

There’s good and bad but for the Love of Bobby Bowden can we either play DE s that can rush the passer or cut em and get guys that rotate the run !! Two plays a game , come on that’s a waste waiting on Nothing !!

  15. infomeplease Says:

If the Buc’s can stay relatively injury free, they can be as good as any team in the NFL. Of course they have to learn how to play large in spotlight games like Sunday Night and Monday Night. Beat the good teams in prime time! Do that and confidence can carry them well into the post season.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    WBL

i was thinking at least 12….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I’d sure like to see better than 9-5.

  18. JimBobBuc Says:

Bowles and Baker need to figure out the night games. I have not seen or heard of why the night games are an issue, much less a plan to correct the situation! I propose game week practices at night.

Joes- what do you hear about this? From anybody!

  19. buc4evr Says:

If the defense can stay healthy, Bowles doesn’t have brain farts at critical times, and Evans and Godwin can stay on the field, then the Bucs can avoid the mid season slump this year. 12 wins is attainable.

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

Has anybody run an EKG on him to make sure he HAS a pulse? 😬

  21. Tye Says:

The roster is something to get excited about….
    The HC/DC is NOT!

Teams take on their HC persona…. Unfortunately in this case, mediocre!

  22. GoneGator Says:

A little strange to me that not more people are talking about 3 picks in our 1st preseason game.🤔

You know, the so called cover no-one Swiss cheese zone. It’s one game (some call meaningless) but it could/would seem to be a very positive sign to those who aren’t looking ONLY for the negative. Of course we need to keep it up but it’s worth noting imo.

  23. LakelandBuc Says:

    GoneGator,

The players that made the picks will probably be on the PS
That’s why no one is talking about them

    It’s a Buc life,

  24. GoneGator Says:

    @LakelandBuc
Probably true but it was Todd’s “scheme” and a positive sign nonetheless imo. Let’s see how we do against the Steelers 🤞🏼
